Art Discussion

Since you cannot make discussion threads in the main Art Gallery, here's your discussion thread for you ;)

Here you can post everything about art in general - what inspires you, what programs you use and how to get the most from them, any trouble you're having drawing particular things, etc.

If you wish to post new threads in the Art Gallery, they must contain some of your work. If they don't, it's a sure-fire sign that they belong here instead.

It helps to make comments on others' work (thoughtful ones, not just mindless praise), then they'll be attracted to whatever you make. Try and make a reply atleast two lines long.

Since it's obvious porn/hentai isn't allowed here, what about artistic nudity? I do have a few artwork that contained them (but no nasty stuff) and yes, I always warn viewers before clicking on the link as what I had done on other forums.

It's not a problem since I've warned people here before clicking a link. But you have to be clear because some folks speak another language and misinterpret.

On rare occasions, I'll draw a Pokemorph. In fact, I finished a Smeargle morph (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/9899002/) just yesterday.

>Does anyone here use dip ink?

I use dip ink on rare occasions. If it didn't drip all over the place, and if I were a bit better with a maru pen, I'd use it more often.

Dos anyone know why many people think trasing is bad to start out with? After all there has to be a start of everything and I found out at 5 that trasing is awesome when you'r just learning how to use a pencil for other things then letters and numbers.

I also would like to bring up that religion is sometimes not liked in drawings. Shamanism is what mine are based apon. Dos it bother anyone when they are shown work by someone NOT of there religion?

Two tricky questions to bring up I know ^^ But its best to see things from all aspects befor someone posts apon a artist with odd works O_o;

I hope I'm still going by forum rules. And if not let me know asap and I'll do w/e I can to get rid of this. I know in many web forums they do not like when religion is brought up. And if it is so here pm me o-o;; please. Thank you^^

I think Shamanism isn't a religion. I think it's more of a "tribal ritual" thing. I also don't mind about religion in art.

Lady Machoke> I do Pokemorphs on some occasions :)

PichuSecretBase> I have a dip pen, but I'm really bad at using it... how do you make the ink flow smoothly?

Because tracing is not art.Tracing can be good PRACTICE. It really helps you learn and then add your own styles later. I don't trace but for any artist, reference is a MUST. Unless your doing cartoons, and realism artist must have reference. Remember that tracing other's work or other's photos is PRACTICE and cannot be used on the internet or viewed publicly. You pretty much draw it and throw it away, though it seems like a waste, you gain better ability to draw.

You pretty much draw it and throw it away, though it seems like a waste, you gain better ability to draw.I suppose tracing something you like can make you more aware of what you want in your own drawings. But what's dangerous about starting out with it is that it denies your own concious volition, and will likely make it hard for you to draw when you are actually drawing. Because it will make you want perfection in your work of art (and consequently take up too much time for nothing)--perfection according to someone else's standards, and disappoint you if you can't do so--even though perfection is not the goal of art. Art is not meant to be compared, and it can rarely be judged. Every artist chooses a different way of viewing reality.

By the way, could you explain what you mean by reference?

Lady Machoke
December 29th, 2004, 01:09 PM
Hard thing to say, but I'll say this...

I know C&C is good for improvement, but what if nobody and I mean NOBODY didn't comment on your artwork? It happened to me before here and I felt really depressed about it because seeing people give me comments boost my self-esteem. In fact, I whined about it once as well as getting jealous about the amount of comments others get here.

*nodnod* i agree with you..
i used to trace like.. lets say one part of the head for example..
when i did this it was for PRACTISE only..
i drew a face (without refrence or tracing) then i traced something and compared where i went wrong so i knew where i can improve for next time
i also like to trace poses.. but not actually tracing..
i sorta just quickly outline the general postition.. kinda like a stick-figure, then i put a bubble figure around it..
i do this to get the feel of the motion (for example, lets say i want to draw someone riding a bike: i find a pic of it, i trace the general outline, then i make my own positions and angles and things)
i trace things usually to get proportions correct so when i draw people in certain actions, i dont make them look stiff or rigid..
i would never use any tracings as my actual work or anything like that..
when i trace something, its for practise and i always scrap it ._. like.. i doodle all over it and use it as a colour tester and stuff..
._. so.. its sorta like a guideline for me..
i rarely do that anymore though ._.
and if i do, it'd probably be for a hard pose that you wouldnt find in everyday life.. like maybe a birds-eye-view angle or something thats really hard to get the proportions correctly..
the most important thing is that you should use tracing for practise only..
(i know i've said that alot in my post, but i mean it)
i think that people who take credit in something they copied or traced are liars to themselves and everyone around them ._.
well.. yeah
>< no flames..
just my opinion here...

For transparency you could use PSP 5, and create transparent background, for your pic, that should work.
I used to trace when Iwas younger, even though I was already goodat drawing. It got my hand familiar with the picture and I traced and image in my head, while tracing, so that when I went back to draw it, Ialready knew how the basic layout was. But that was in first grade, I've stopped since then. Now I just look and draw =p

Other types of religion shouldn't bother people, unless it is flaming or bashing their religion with the use of pictures.
otherwise, i see no problem in it, but thats just my opinion.

also, i think tracing is a good way to start out. But you shouldnt ever take credit for something you trace. I rather try to copy a picture of photograph (and always state that you have copied it)
or start off with simple shapes without detail, or even sketching from life and then adding anything else you need to it. (like drawing someone kneeling, then drawing a kimono over it etc)

so, in my opinion, tracing isn't bad as long as you either scrap the art afterwards, or put them in a personal pile for refrence and state that it is in fact traced and not drawn.
tracing can be seen as plagirism, and thats why you should write the word "traced image" on it, so that people can know.

i hope that helped

Talking about art and stuff, I guess people often get bored when people who visit their art threads just give them a look but do not leave a comment there, well of course, people are not obligated to necessarily leave a comment and stuff, but you understand. I guess people already felt in this way. Dont you think too?

I've been feeling that way a long time ago. It makes me feel like I'm "just there". :\

My first real attempt at drawing anime-style (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v250/Ida-chan/drawings/picture.gif)
I decided to sit down and practice using a "How to Draw Manga" book that's been sitting in my drawer for a while. However, compared to the likes of those at DeviantArt, it's really mediorce. At least it's better than my previous drawings (which aren't worth showing anymore).

Egi: I think i know what your talking about. Its because the thing your copying into dosent have some of the needed Pallete colors for the thing your pasting. To get around this the easyest thing to do is just make a new file and copy everything in.

Is there any way to set Paint so it dosent Auto-Enlarge the work space when i paste something bigger in?

Forest Grovyle
November 19th, 2006, 09:23 AM
Well, Phatkav, it depends on what you're willing to pay. :)

If you are looking for free programs, I would suggest oekaki or GIMP (I haven't used it but I have heard it's good).

If you don't mind paying, I'd go for Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements (a lot cheaper than the full Photoshop and it has most of its features anyway).

Sketching is how I live to draw. I love sketching, because you can do whatever you want, without the fear of it turning out crap, but by chance that it turns out good, well, that's just gravy. Then you can just ink it in and upload it on deviantART. ^^

And yes, I have a deviantART account.
Yup, sketching is the fun of thought.

Zasz and joey7891, those forums are not for general art questions. So I have merged them with Art Discussion for you. Please read the forum categories carefully before posting a new thread.

As for your question, joey, it depends on what programs you have. Which ones do you own?

You need a scanner or a camra, but I scanner is better. On Paint press on file and scroll down untill you find:

Scan from scanner or camra.

The head of the scanner will open and you flip your picture over and put it there. Close the head and then do the thing I told you on Paint.

Photoshop is Adobe. Adobe Photoshop.

GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) is free to download. I use open Canvas (oC), and you can try out a free 30-day trial here at their website: www.portalgraphics.net/en. After that, you're going to need to purchase it, but you can still use the program. You just can't save and some features will be deactivated. At least that's what I think you're talking about; other programs besides Photoshop. You can check out www.corel.com as they have other products available to try.
Maybe n00b question, just don't expect a reply, beyond this one. Im looking for a program as well.. sorry. ; ;

There is Microsoft GIF Animator (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/13212), which you can download for free. Others are Ulead GIF Animator 5 (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=CorelCom/ProcessLayout&lc=en&ppg=CorelCorp/Trials/Login&pid=1175263345855&cid=1179844639534) and Jasc Animation Shop (http://www.jasc.com/products/trialreg.asp?pid=003), but have a trial period, which I believe is for 30-days. You will have to create an account before downloading either Ulead or Jasc, which are pretty much partners now.

Well, I'm pretty sure this is the right place to post this question.

I was looking at getting Photoshop, then I saw the price. I asked my parents in the nicest way possible if I could get it. They said "No way" so I looked around and found Photshop elements 5.0. The question is, if I got this, would I be able to make basic signature banners? And can you draw with it. I want to create my own anime character, but I'm not sure if elements gives you this ability.

Forest Grovyle
August 15th, 2007, 11:51 AM
Elements is really good. :) I use Photoshop Elements 2.0 for all my non-oekaki drawings. It has most of the features of the full version of PS, and I really recommend it if you're not going to be doing anything super-complex.

I use PhotoImpact 5. It came with my tablet, so it was free :D

It's similar to photoshop, except not as potent.

Super Edit: Is there a better way to watermark images than to have ugly text all over the picture? I was thinking of using a pen tool set to white with a little bit of blur, and then signing my name on the picture itself in an un-obtrusive place. People could edit it out with a little time and patience, but would it at least discourage most stealers?

Or better yet, is there a site that only allows the uploader to post links to their content?

I use paint.net. It's free, and I think it's a really great program, it's really simple to use if you've tried photoshop before. GIMP, at least in my opinion, would require more in regards to learning, especially if you're used to photoshop. The only downside to paint.net is that it lacks a smudge/blur tool, (for now, I've read that they plan to include it in later releases) which I heard the GIMP has (correct me if I'm wrong...). You can also create all sorts of plug-ins for Paint.net, and you can download them from their site.

Anyways, I want to know how many people use graphics tablets, and which one? I'm a poor college student who is looking for a graphics tablet for under $200, and I could really use some help and suggestions. :)

txteclipse

I use a Hyper Pen 8000U. It's made by Aiptek, and cost roughly $90. Active area is 8" by 6".

I'ts fairly cheap, but it's got pressure sensing and seems to work fine. If you're a more casual artist, I'd go for it.

EDIT: Just did some research, and I found mixed pricing. Some places offered it for around $115, while others priced it at around $50.

I use one and its an Adesso CyberTablet Series 6400 (4 x 6). I bought it new for 50 USD and even thought its not the greatest tablet in the world, it works fine. WACOM seems to be the most popular tablet brand, but that's up to you.

Loki
November 17th, 2007, 09:07 PM
Tablets? I use one right here.

I have a 6 x 8 Wacom tablet, but it was $230. There was a 4 x 6 Wacom tablet for $190, but I'm sure that really many different other kinds of tablets work just as well. Wacom is just the most popular.

What you want to know is how much you'll be using it, before choosing the price. Mine was rawr-expensive, but I use it for hours every day. xD; So it was well worth it. But if it's just going to end up sitting on your desk until the end of time, then it's not worth so much. It also helps to check on what it's features are compared to what you'll be using it for, and whether it's compatible with your operating system. ^^ Though the latter isn't usually quite as big an issue, it's always better to check. xD

Graphic tablet users: Thanks for replying! I was wondering if you guys know what "pen tilt support" is, and does a tablet that has that feature better than one without?

Also, is bigger better?

Loki
November 17th, 2007, 10:17 PM
Pen Tilt; Huhh... Is that like, the pen pressure? Not really sure what you mean, but if you do mean pen pressure, I think most/all tablets have got pen pressure. If not, then... I think you'd get a lot better deal if you got one with pen pressure. xD Depending on what you're going to do with the tablet. If you're going to draw, I'd personally recommend it, yeah.

Bigger = Better;; Not necessarily, it's easy to get used to both. I think size is really just on your budget, but I've never had a smaller tablet, so I couldn't really say for sure. ^^;

アガースタ・ネコチャン
November 17th, 2007, 10:27 PM
yeah, I am definitely going to be drawing with my tablet. I'm not sure why someone would want a tablet other than to draw with... But that's just me.

Ah, no, pen tilt is something else... not the sensitivity. I looked it up on Wikipedia (hooray, such a reliable source), and it refers to something else, I wish I could describe it.

I am wondering about size still though. I'd like to be able to get by with something small, like a 4x6, the one I saw in the store today was small, and was about $100. Definitely something I can afford. But I have been researching prices online for a larger tablet, a 6x8. I've decided I'm probably going to go with a Wacom tablet, just because they are so popular, not to be a sheeple, but I usually feel that things are popular for a reason.

I still would like opinions on sizes though...

Gunn
November 18th, 2007, 10:15 AM
It's just the angle where the pen can be held, instead of keeping it vertical all the time. I think most tablets should have this support. As for sizing, bigger does not exactly mean better, just more roomier. But the bigger it is, the more it will cost, that's if you are going to be working on large canvases. I'm just a typical oekaki user; oekaki canvas usually are not that big, so a 4x6 tablet was suitable for me.

Hey, does anyone know where I can get photoshop brushes that look like fruit? And not like pictures of fruit turned into brushes, but like drawing of fruit? I'm looking for strawberries and cherries in particular. I've found places to download photoshop brushes, but none of them seen to have the style of fruit I'm looking for. I could make some, but I'm not too sure of how they'd turn out...

On a side note, I ended up getting a small graphics tablet with an active area of 4x6. And in case you were wondering, 4x6 is plenty of space for me! Thanks for all you feedback/comments/opinions/suggestions about graphics tablets!

You can look in the Free Artists' Resources (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?p=1554676) thread. Check under "Free Brushes" and it will have a list of sites where you can download brushes. Something you may want to browse though.

Would this be a good place to ask why my tablet is randomly not wanting to install?

It's a:

It connected before and now it's not wanting to.

Any ideas? I really would rather ask here than wait 2 hours on the phone and it be something easy to fix.

You mean you installed the drivers but it isn't doing anything? If so, that happens to me from time to time. I really don't even know why. You could try re-installing the drivers, or switching the USB port you're using. If you installed it on a certain port, continue using that port or you may have issues.

Anyone know a good background tutorial? I mean for scenes: as in I have a character and I want them in a landscape as opposed to floating in white space.
