View Full Version : Do You Think Pokemon Anime Isn't As Good As It Use To Be?

I for one think the anime is doing very poorly, ever since the battle frontier anime, and since they got rid of all the great actors & actresses. The Kanto, Sevii Islands, And Johto Region were great! Hoenn wasn't as good as i wanted it to be, and from there on it han't been on course.

I think the anime is better than it's been in a long time, rivaling Kanto or even beating it
Since I dont watch the dub of DP, I'm not affected by the voice changes.... well unless you mean adjusting to the Japanese seiyuu but that was easy.
This post has a lot of spoilers.... and I cant find the spoiler tag on the quick reply box so uh.... be warned
We've got so many new things in the anime -
Reoccuring characters
rivals
Greggle
Brock the breeder finally HAS AN EGG
Shinji
interesting gym leaders
awesome fillers - a cosplay ep, a dream ep and so many more
the animation is beautiful and clear. this series has actually gotten me into the whole digital color thing
MukuBIRD
the Pokemons' personalities
the unpredictability!!!! seriously this new season has unexpected surprises around every turn like Dawn getting Buoysel and Shinji having two starter Pokemon. Now I just wish the fandom would get over these things and then all will be well.
We've had some problems this season like episodes with bad animation and the lack of Team Galaxy (and the Shinji haitus) but when you look at the improvements, the bad stuff seems so little
no offense but I just think a lot of people here are sounding like Kanto/Johto/Houen elitists. Because DP flat out beats Houen in quality and also beats Johto, Orange Islands and maybe even Kanto.
So what if you dont like PUSA, just watch the raw. And if you dont know what's going on, just try to figure it out yourself. I dont know that much Japanese and I'm perfectly ok with watching the raws.
Sorry about that... I'm just sick of people daying DP is bad when it's not

d/p isn't bad at all. i just dont like that anime and the battle frontier anime. the video game is a work of art. everything else, i can't say the same.

Diamond and Pearl is good because it replaced one cute girl with another.

Well AG was my favorite of the seasons. It finally introduced a girl who was able to have her own storyline and rivals and all. And plus, May is my favorite character, so AG was my favorite.
I'm not feeling what everybody is feeling for DP. I personally think it's pretty boring. Dawn's contests aren't as entertaining as May's, and her rivals aren't that interesting. I do like Zoey, it's just, her personality gets killed by Harley.
I loved the first few seasons. Misty was awesome. I loved her. I loved when Ash was a dumbass back then, and we had Misty getting pissed every minute. And the episodes were original. But people seem to overrate it. It's not THAT amazing.
But yeah. NOW I think the anime isn't as good as it use to be, since I just can't seem to like DP that much. But AG rocked for me. But once it got to DP, I started losing interest.

The Kanto series is the best. Ash seemed to be more clumsy and funny, now he's just too serious. Plus, I hate how Ash gets a new set of pokemon in each country. The only pokemon he keeps is his Pikachu. (which should have evolved by now to keep people interested)

I know that I watch the anime less. Sure, I tape the episodes since they play when I'm in work, but when I come home, I can't be bothered to watch them. The Pokemon anime isn't that much of a big deal in my life. I'm still in the fandom, but I just don't watch the anime.
One of the reasons might be because I grew up and the anime storyline didn't. I want more character development, not sitting there thinking good ol' Team Rocket is a major threat.
I do agree with Crystal Clair that the D/P anime is refreshing from the formula writing of AG and BF. I was surprised at a few twists to the plot, most of which are spoilers. :0
The voice actors change never bothered me. It took a while to get used to Meowth's new voice, but it wasn't something I would lose sleep over.

well first of all:
the new voices got me to stop watch the anime. i will watch if they put misty back in. just so i can here what her new voice is like. ash's voice is not argulable. it makes him soound more mature and older, which he should be by the now. the other voices are just blah.
the anime story line is bad. i would just like it to be per episode that its not about just one pokemon. i would just like it to be a battle or a challenge. i liked the olderstory lines, even though they are similar.
i agree with everything Haruka Chan said. may was a funny and cute character, the only thing that would of been good is hert and drew kissed.
So, does anyone else agree with me in all of this?

I don't really mind much the voices. I say that a lot of characters have much more better voices then they did when 4Kids had the dub. I do love the new James voice. He finally sounds like a bad guy. Teeheehee
Well when you think about it. It has been like that since the beginning of the animes. The whole 'pokemon of the day' thing or what you call the episode being about just one pokemon. Your fave saga was basically a whole one of those episodes. Like one episode was about magcargo and then there was one about hitmontop. Still I do like how they make a focus on the pokemon and how they intertine them into the episodes.
I just like to look at each episode as a fresh new look. The show may have not change much as in story line but I do enjoy watching each episode wondering what will happen. I mean so it may be the same plot and thing but what makes it so fresh that there are some episodes that just are amazing like the episode where Jay appeared in. Those kind of episodes just make watching the anime worth it.

I still like it the way it is as of now. I never lost interest of it as well. I love when Brock starts flirting with a girl and then Croagunk will come out of its ball and poison jab it

Its better than it used to be. I think Johto Journeys/Johto League Champions was the worst. There were too many fillers I think that were just the same thing. There were some interesting episodes but a lot of them are just meh. I completly went out of Pokemon at Johto so I think it was at its worst then. Its improved since then I think.

Meh its okay now. i dont watch the ****ty english version though. on the last ep of pokemon. and they're the VAs. im not gonna be able to take it seriously. theyre gonna ruin the moment. thats y im strictly anything japanese for the DP saga. i have diamond in jap too cuz the DP dub names suck. but anyways. anime's animation value sorta went down. they dont move as well and their drawings of the characters rnt as great. i liked Johto and Kanto best.

Yeah whatever happened to the original voice actors? The new ones sound so akward, I thought they did it to make them sound more mature but the old voices were better!

Kanto and Jhoto were much better in my opinion =/ I don't watch Pokemon anymore cause it just got old. It seems like the show the same thing over and over again. Its sort of easy to predict whats going to happen next now... Jhoto wasn't that great, but its better then Diamond/Pearl and Hoen.. -_- I miss the old Pokemon anime D= Much better ^^

I don't care for D/P all that much. Every now and then I'll come across an episode that interests me (mostly concerning Dawn, or a contest), but for the main part I think it's gone a little down hill.
In Kanto and Johto Ash was all immature and head-strong, but in D/P (and AG too) he became this wise-like trainer guy. Meh, it just wasn't the same to me. I liked it better when they got themselves into things by stuff Ash said and all, not by choice. The story lines are also getting a little old, just a little repetitive from the ones before. And my final peeve is the animation. Now, the animation itself is good, but just at certain times Ash seems a little stiff. I know that isn't major, but it does annoy me a little. And then theres the voices, but I try to watch it in SUB's anyway, so I can't hold that against them.
Don't get me wrong, I still really like the anime, I just think it's gone downhill some. :3

I still watch the Anime even though many people thinks every episode is just the repeatition of all the Episodes :\
I don't think the Anime has lost it's magic touch,
though for me...the Anime will always be the best!

I'm a very critzy Pokemon Anime fan, I especially dislike Advanced Challenge, especially the fateful 'What you seed is what you get' episode.
Master Quest was pure awesome. I loved the Lugia episode 2 parter and the Red Garydos episode. Every minute was well worth watching, it was just generally more exciting. I'm glad they're showing it again.
Frontier was OK. They tried to make it exciting. But the Deoxy Crisis and Pokelantis episodes were bad. They were a little more active than they were in advanced battle.
I watched the first 2 episodes of diamond and pearl, and I loved it. I wasn't too happy at the fact that Dawn is a Co-ordinator, but I like her anyway.

I'm sick of the D/P bashing. The Kanto seasons weren't really that amazing, people! My favorite region was Johto quickly followed by Sinnoh, so far. Season 1 didn't have contests to fill out the series, so we were swamped in(sometimes unpleasent) fillers. Johto seasons didn't have contests either, but it had enough plot based episodes that they didn't need to fill it out.

I agreem except about Johto. Sinnoh rules ! It has the best character plots, plus the suspense, that wasn't in the first 9 seasons

i feel the exact same way. i'll watch when ash is in the pokemon league. my prediction is hes gonna make it to the top 2. heres how i know (not counting the sevii islands):
Kanto: Top 16
Johto: Top 8
Hoenn: Top 4
its just a pattern. when the next region reaches my perdiction is hes gonna win and the show will end and so will the games, toys, etc.

Or they could start the show with the 6th Generation male Protagonist and a new crew of friends!
The only thing that isn't as good as it used to be are the voices, but I can move past that. At least we aren't getting those lame "Change Rice Balls into Sandwiches and Dougnuts Routine, Japan is bad for the kids" routine that 4Kids has. I can deal with anything else if PUSA doesn't do that.
I also wonder why people love Johto so much. Misty was basically an empty shell sucked out by the Evil Egg thing with tons of fillers, and all that amounting to Ash taking 8th Place in the Johto League. But I guess most shippers liked it becuase it gave them evidence without disproving it. But that's for another day in another thread.
D/P is a big refresher, and it's just getting started.

a lot of people like johto because many new things happen in that region. pkrs, shinys, ev training, some of the pokemon are just great to use in battle:
Miktank
Blissey
Skarmory
Tyranitar
and many more!
i love the johto region and then game and everyone wants a remake of it.

Too bad the fad died and many people outgrew Pokemon.
Changing characters can make or break a show. I mean, you all forgot about Brock getting replaced? I remember my reaction: lol WUT?
At some day, at some point in time, the show had crossed the line from anime to saturday morning cartoon.

Yeah, if you were eight and watch the first episode for the first time ever. Pokemon was still in syndication! OMG, I am so old!
I don't see why people still complain about the new voice actors. The old ones weren't so good either, people! Veronica Taylor isn't that good of a voice actor, and trust me, if you watched all of the Pokemon episodes that 4Kids did, you release just how horrible she is at acting as a pre-teen boy.
After watching so many stale episodes of Pokemon, I find D/P to be very entertaining. In fact, after watching not even half of the Johto series, I stopped watching Pokemon all together. The Johto series really, really dull. And don't get me started on Hoenn.

Being a long time Pokemon fan and watching it evolve over the years, I have to say it really isn`t as good as it used to be. It`s lost it`s touch. I remember when Pokemon first came out, my friends and I were so hyped up about it and everyone I knew loved it. I even got some of my Pokemon cards stolen from me. I also got ripped off some times trading Pokemon cards. And my friends and I role played Pokemon. Yup. Those were the days.
omg, another thing. I remember crying hysterically when I missed an episode of Pokemon. lol. I really wanted to see a certain episode of Pokemon that showcased Articuno, and I had missed it because I was reading or drawing. I cryed hysterically. lol

Whether the older episodes were better or not is subjective. I myself do enjoy the older episodes more, though, I watched them as they newly aired, so nostalgia kicks in too and "clouds" my opinion. In addition, there was stuff the series did back then that just doesn't happen anymore, eg. the 3-part Sabrina arc... a gym leader being possessed by evil spirits and turning Brock and Misty to dolls? Timeless. Ash having to dress up like a girl to get into a gym? Timeless.
I also liked the old Ash. He was so charmingly noobish, and that was very entertaining. As I understand it, not many fans liked that Ash, because he was a jerk most of the time. (but I thought that too, was entertaining)
Anyways, though I did enjoy the early D/P episodes, I thought a lot of them were a little meh. I was disappointed with the Roark gym battle, too. Roark just came off as plain to me...
but, the newer episodes are pure gold. Gardenia is hilarious, Hunter J is awesome, and Gary's back.

I don't have time for Pokémon any more, but I stopped watching it for other reasons too.
The stories were always the same. The episodes were low on quality (sometimes), and I grew tired of Team Rocket always being on the recieving end of an ass kicking - you always knew they were going to lose!
I find it pathetic how every female cast member has her bike fried by Pikachu. That's just meh.

I watched the first episode of Pokemon when I was four or five, maybe three. Awesome. Loved it so much I started buying the games and got half of the Kanto reigon series on video.
Ash was a rookie trainer with a good heart struggling to be the "very best," Misty was trying to get out of the shadows of her older sisters, and Brock was a guy trying his best to support his family and then fufill his dream.
When they replaced Brock in the Orange Islands, I got angry. Very angry. But I eventually warmed up to Tracy. Misty was a pretty good trainer, but now all she did was hold Togepi.
By the time Hoehnn came, my friends and I felt we outgrew the anime and stopped watching. I didn't like May. (What ten year old had a figure and why did she hate Pokemon so much in the beginning?) Max didn't do anything. Ash turned into a goofy, good-hearted guy into a patient, all understanding type. Brock mostly filled in a mentor type role. Team Rocket were actual threats, but now they were a bunch of screw-ups. The voice actors changed. Everyone became "perfect." No human flaws. (What kind of a ten-year-old has a figure!)
D/P is better than Hoehnn if you ask me. (Still, the ten-year-old guy has a figure.)

I agree... In the first few season the characters and people in general had REAL PROBLEMS, but now every single human being in the series is happy all the time and a very kind person that loves pokemon... come on... that has nothing real in it..
I think that series nowadays are for 5-8 year old children who don't know what a real problem is, that's why I hate the series... every time I watch it I get more disappointed... It's always the same thing: challenge a gym leader and make friends with him/ get to know a new pokemon and make friends with someone/ capture a pokemon and make friends with someone/ help somebody defeat the totally un-skilled team rocket and make friends woth him

I haven't paid much attention at all to D/P, but from what I've heard, It's nowhere near as bad as anything before it. (BF, Hoenn league, last half of Johto...) But I still say Indigo League was a classic, and is the best part of the series in my opinion.

This is what they should do (for final season of pokemon ever):
1. Ash, Misty, and Brock. The old trio, the original threesome.
2. Go back to Kanto. Old, original place.
3. Make Ash challenge and beat the Elite Four.
4. Introduce Ash's dad along the way, and reveal more of Misty's past. (what happened to her parents?)
And also, I saw a recent episode (don't know if it was Sinnoh or Hoehnn) where Brock's mom was alive. In the original, Brock's mom died and his dad left home to become a trainer. So Brock worked hard to support him and his younger sibs. His dad comes back, and Brock joins Ash and Misty.

Lol actually they only said Brock's mum died in the dub. In Japanese they just said she left too or something. Obivously 4Kids thought we'd never see Brock's mum so thought they'd make it more dramatic or something.

The early ones were good, D/P is cool too, the only thing different is that it's predictable, like when the D/P theme played when Ash was going to finish his first gym rematch against Roark.

I really liked (and still like) the Kanto series the best. It's absolutely amazing and I find it more interesting then the new seasons. D/P is ok.

The producers didn't expect Pokemon to be so famous or popular, so they probably had a whole different storyline (Ash's father, Elite Four, etc.) but they decided to drag things out a little bit more to make more money. Before they knew it, the plot had changed so much that putting the original storyline would be stupid.
D/P is better than Hoehnn, if you ask me. Still, majorly predictable. (Ash gonna get all the badges, enter league but not win, etc.) And I don't like the Coordinator thing. I mean, I like it, but it changed Pokemon so much. Pokemon are for battling and raising, not showing off in a contest is what I thought. And the ten year olds having figures is a bad move. Encourages anorexia in young children and makes older teens feel more self-conscious.

I think it used to be better, but only because I'm biased. I started off when the show started off. I watched it from the beginning. I'll always value it more than whatever comes after it.
From my standpoint, I cannot say.

I'm on the fence too. I definately liked Kanto a lot, but I couldn't stay up late enough to watch it often because I had an early bed time of like, 8:00 back then. I loved the show and watched it every chance I got though!

I LOVED Kanto. Watched it every day after I came home from school and got up early on Saturdays to watch.
But my sisters like Kanto better, and they were like two when they saw it so they can't remember. All my friends agree that it is better too. So do I.

Ever since Ash won that rigged battle against the Dome Ace, I finally stoppped denying the anime is no longer what it used to be. The characters are annoying IMO. Just watching the first PKMN movie made me realize the gem that was the Kanto anime.

Yeah, Ash's wins are now just stupid.

i agree, he hasn't won any gym battles this season (correct me if wrong), and a little pikachu can kill the all powerful regice, one of the best defensive pokemon ever. it scares me.

Ash really isn't the same. Not just his voice, his personality too. He used to be the kinda clumsy, funny guy and now he is kind of boring. I still can't get over the voice changes in all of the characters, their voices were part of their personalities and so now it is just kind of messed up. The storylines are also not as good. The old episodes were memorable, the new ones are forgetable. In order to make me love the anime as much as I used to they need to get the old VAs back, make it so it is ash, misty, and brock traveling together, none of these new people they keep bringing in, and they need to restore ash's fun personality.

Let me put it this way. I could have 10 pages of criticism about the new seasons. I loved the first one
