View Full Version : What on Earth happened to this show?

Ok, so today I was flipping through the channels on my TV and I came across Pokemon on CN. It was the newer version, Diamond and Pearl, I think. I tried watching it and it was...awful.

The new voices sound terrible (what where they thinking?), and the animation has really changed (Not changed in a good way either). And who's the girl with the beanie? I know they got rid of Misty and replaced her with that dimwitted May and that annoying whinny know-it-all Max, but this is the first time I've seen this girl.

Plus, what's with all these new Pokemon? The old Pokemon use to resemble real animals, or plants. Lots these new Pokemon don't even look like anything.

I mean...can someone tell me what these things are suppose to be?
(I had links attached, but I said I wasn't aloud to post them)

Roserade?

Regigigas?

Dainose?

I also hate how they take older Pokemon from the first and second generations and try to add another stage of evolution to them. "Magmotar"? "Electivire"? "Tangrowth"? "Porygon Z"? It was ok for a while, but now it's turned into a lack a creativity.

I haven't watched Pokemon since I was way younger (I watch the old reruns occasionally). Last time I watched NEW episode was the Orange Islands season. I use to collect the cards, the toys, the games (last games I played where Gold/Silver/Crystal), you name it. I even stood in the gigantic line at the movie theater when the first movie came out.

As an old fan of Pokemon, I have to say this series has become a joke. It's a shame the show has actually gotten this bad. The series walks where it once galloped. It had it's time shine, and it did, but now, Like Dragon Ball Z, it's time the show be laid
to rest.

(Also, sorry if there's already a hundred threads like this. One more isn't going to kill you.)

it's actually just because people are used to the older voices.

Every Pokemon needs an evolution, or else it'll ruin Proffersor Rowan's statement about Legendaries not evolving

Believe it or not, Pokemon is a million dollar company now, they won't give a crap if they lose a viewer or two.
Besides, CN dubbing is a piece of crap anyways, watch the Japanese version, it's way better.

I like you, you're level-headed. =)

But really, there is nothing to complain about the new voice actors. The old ones weren't very good at all. 4Kids hire very unexperienced voice actors anyway, and keep those voice actors on very short leashes. That's why you hardly see the voice actors do work for other companies like ADV or Funimation.

The only reason why people say the new voice actors are bad is because they're used to the poor job 4Kids used to do.

Dainose, or ダイノズ (hope you can see the Katakana) is actually a Pokemon... a.k.a Probopass in English.

And I agree with the dubbing part, the Japanese version is so much better to watch.

Ash's voice actor is still a woman. It's not unusual for boys to be voiced by woman. Most men can't get their voice high enough, and falsetto is out of question.

How has the show gotten worse? All I can think of is that the show is still much the same it was in the 1st season except contests were introduced in AG and Ash has somewhat matured. The anime was at its worst at Johto, which is when Pokemon started to lose its popularity (where I lived it lost its popularity at Orange Islands).

The first series is no more mature than any of the other series IMO.

Ash is voiced by a woman in Japanese too, by Rica Matsumoto I think.

Cheesy plotlines, horrible fillers, repetitive characterisations, horrible animation (clouds look horrendous, footage is repeated with a fancier accompanying background, backgrounds are oversaturated, and there's rough 3DCG), and messed up physics (Bubble causing black explosions upon impact, anyone)? Not to mention a debut episode where all this actually happened?

Pokémon USA and TAJ Production's dubbing comes in at quite another story: horrible episode titles, a sorry excuse for an opening (and ending) theme that looks like a horribly-done FMV, "Pokémonic" jargon, and music that breaks every single mood the original made out?

Yeah, nothing worse here.

Jorah
August 29th, 2007, 02:53 PM
There've always been cheesy, boring, pointless plotlines for fillers though o.O. Although there are more of them in the newer series I think, yes. Yes to horrible CGI though yuck. I think Bubble and Bubblebeam have always caused explosions but I can't remember. Its kind of stupid that the attack itself does any damage anyway. Oh no, the BUBBLES have hit me XD The animation is better I think, except from CGI (CGI bubbles make me cringe and I think I remember some CGI walls...it didn't fit in) and some episodes where the art has been bad. I remember that everytime Pigeotto came out of its Pokeball they used the same animation of it flying upwards over LOADS of episodes. I know that sometimes they use the same animation in the same episode, but it was used over loads of them. I remember that when Bulbasaur used Razor Leaf it just stood, staring in the middle of the screen and the leaves went in a spiral. In D/P it would at least move an inch while attacking.

4Kids had horrible puns too "The Purr-fect Hero" blah. I'm not saying that the puns now are good, they're as bad as each othr IMO. They started the puns around the 2nd part of Indigo League but had a few before then. But titles hardly show how good the episode is.

I'm not saying that I hate the first series. I love it and its my favourite series. Its just that the way everyone goes on about it...you'd think it was a godly series. Its not even godly compared to other series.

Ever since 4Kids gave up on Pokemon and gave Cartoon Network to seize the new deal, the show's just gotten worst! And the creators didn't do a very good job on the third series and onwards. My sister and I like the first two seasons the best, because it had a lot more action than problems to solve. And the heroes were actually heroes. They practically saved the community. Now, it's just a bunch of kiddie problems that you have in real life, and it's really boring. The episodes seem shorter now because of that.

Also, like what Jorah said. Some plots are just becoming cheesy and useless.

Hmm... I miss Veronica Taylor's dubbing of Ash. She was so much better at that than Sarah Natochenny...

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THE D/P SERIES IS THE BEST !
(I'll give you these reasons why)
1. The old series just stunk, end of story, but you oldy fanboys like them, but I don't. Team Rocket and watching them fail was the only reason I watched the show. Withouth them, I wouldn't have watched the show. Right now, they're getting more into character development. Each has their own personaility

And, WHAT ! You don't know who Dawn is (she's the girl with the beanie), she's the best female pronagoist ever ! (But, hey that's why I'm a Dawn fanboy)

Sinnoh series<-- Other

Sinnoh series rules, the others, they were lame. END OF STORY !

I forgot to add that I like that they've used computers for the colouring now. The old series just look so dull in comparision. You can especially tell with the Master Quest opening where they have used the bright, new colours with the dull colouring from clips of the anime. I don't know much about art but I think there used to be a lot of watermarks or stains or whatever you call them.

Sinnoh series<-- Other

I *think* you mean Sinnoh > others hehe if my maths hasn't failed me the direction of the arrow points to the smallest number. Or on the internet, the thing that is worse.

totally agreed I like both versions and I got use to the voices already. If you didn't get over it no matter how many times you complain nothing is going to do anything. I am so sick of these threads saying "omg the voice actors are horrible". Pokemon dont have to look like a certain animal or plant or even an item shesh

No, they're not, but those Pokemon where cool to look at and interesting. The new ones aren't (and don't even come close), IMO.

The first series is no more mature than any of the other series IMO.

Maturity doesn't anything to do with it. It's the quality.

Lol, and the OP said he "[hasn't] watched Pokemon since [he] was way younger". He shouldn't even know what Probopass is or it's Japanese name.

I looked them up on Wikipedia a few minutes before I made the post, then just copy and pasted the names. I was just going to post the pics of them, but it wouldn't let me, so I just went with the names instead.

And I don't see what the big difference between the American and Japanese versions are. Its the same story, the same look, a few deleted scenes added, and it's in subtitles.

I forgot to add that I like that they've used computers for the colouring now. The old series just look so dull in comparision. Yeah, they use to do the backgrounds and stuff by hand. Now they use computers for just about everything. It's too bad that REAL artists are being replaced by machines and people on computers.

Sludge doesn't seem that cool or interesting to me...but it doesn't matter. You can't really argue over what is "cool" or "interesting" since that really has nothing to do with quality but personal opinion. I was just saying that they weren't plants or animals, which is apparently what is so good about the 1st gen.

Maturity doesn't anything to do with it. It's the quality.

Eh I didn't say it did. Its just a lot of people say that Indigo League is best because its more mature when really its exactly the same as all the other series. So I thought I'd just add that in.

OK, I think we get what your saying. :\

D/P isn't the best, because it's only been on for 45 Episodes, and 24 in the US, but it's shaping up to be very good. People shouldn't praise Diamond and Pearl like it's a (Serebii joke coming) Murkku.GOD, but people shouldn't hate it just becuase it isn't "I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was" type season.

Kanto was a bit stale, but original, Johto was very bland up until the end and some 2 and 4 parter episodes. Hoenn was refreshing with Contests, Battle Fronteir, Max and a bit more mature Ash. D/P is going well, but let's see how it ends.

Dude I totally agree. The new voices suck and the Pokemon have become weirder. Like they look weirder and they have weird names. Also, Pokemon seems redundant these days. Despite that, I`ve been watching the new seasons of Pokemon. Though for some reason, I guess I can`t really get into Diamond and Pearl because I`ve missed alot of episodes.

all of you are wrong

Kanto+Jotho= Crap
Hoenn+Sinnoh=best ever

Sometimes we have to upgrade. I don't think it would be cool having a black and white old camera in the 21st century. samething with pokemon, except the exciting become the old in an 11 year basis.

So what on earth happened to this show? it improved.

Hm, I love the Kanto arc, but whenever I actually analyze why that is, it always comes down to just plain nostalgia. =P

I didn't watch Johto much, and from what I saw, it was basically the same thing in a different place, with a less interesting version of Misty.

Misty would then leave and be replaced by May in the Hoenn region, which was nice for a while, but got annoying for me after too much of May and Max.

They would end up leaving and the Sinnoh region would start with the new girl, Dawn. As I said before in another thread, Dawn ended up bringing a lot of people back into Pokémon. But I would suppose May did the same thing. As yes, change is good for long franchises such as this. To keep things fresh. XD

All of the different arcs were basically the same stuff. What makes people favor certain arcs is what memories they decide to feel attached to. Whether it is Ash x Misty, May and her contests, Dawn and her outfit, people end up remembering one thing that made or broke that arc for them. Personally, I like D/P. At least at the moment. Dawn and Cynthia ftw. XD

Edit: I should add, though, that English localization of Pokémon sucks. Watch the Japanese version of D/P, if simply to enjoy the original Opening theme song. I have to mute it everytime the English theme starts on CN.

NO! lol. They had it for about 80 episodes! By the time I was 9 and had watched loads of Indigo League repeats I was sick of "Pokemon! Gotta catch 'em all!". Even after not watching the first season in about 6 or 7 years, at first I kind of liked it for the nostalgia but I just got bored of it. You can have too much of a good thing. Changing the opening every 50/60 episodes is a good thing. I'd end up murdering someone if we had that opening for 500+ episodes...maybe.

I'll admit that I like the original Kanto arc more than the others, but I never thought Pokémon lost its charm.
It feels exactly the same to me, even with all the new additions, though it took some time to adjust to everything.

Everyone has their opinions, though, and I find that many people still faithfully follow the series, like myself.
