Well, guys, I figured it's time I redo my first post to include as much of my work as I can find. Some stuff will be new to you, but everything else will be old. I have too much work to display everything at once, so each individual section is hidden in spoiler tags.

Anyway, a little background on why I started doing pixel art. Feel free to skip over it, i just feel like posting this.

When I first laid eyes on Kyledove's tiles (I can't remember exactly when, but it was before 2006), I was envious of his skills. I was also a little disappointed they were out of reach at the time. I also came across a certain Remy with the Pokémon Treasures project. Once again, his tiles were out of reach. Well, at the time that I was making my first fangame that I debuted to the community, I thought of trying to make my own tiles, but didn't think I could do it, so I used FR/LG and R/S/E ones. Then, in mid-2006, I came up with the idea of my Pokémon Wulfenite hack. It was essentially a rescripted and remapped version of Ruby. With the popularity of Pokémon Naranja and its amazing graphics, I decided I was going to insert some of my own tiles. At the time, the only tutorial I could find was the one on WAH, which was completely in Spanish. So, I modified some RPG Maker 2003 tiles and got to work on deciphering the tutorial and inserting them (the hard way). The idea died, because I lost interest in the hack. My next project was another hack, this one was called Pokémon EmberOrange. At first, it was a joint project between Christos (Cirno, now) and I. I made custom graphics and did some mapping, and Christos did some mapping. That's really all we got to do before the hack died. After EmberOrange, I decided I was going to try some bigger forms of pixel art, and a new tileset. That's where the Shuckle art came from. That's also where the unfinished Chao and the 1-Up Shroom came from. After that, I thought about doing EmberOrange again. This time, I was going solo on it. New tiles again, and this time, I was going to resprite all the Pokémon that were going to be included. All I got done was Bellsprout. Inbetween EmberOrange and my next hack, I made a new set of tiles. My next hack was Pokémon Harmony. This hack actually started out as a ROM base I made for PHO. Of course, new tiles and what-not. Well, that hack lasted only for so long. Then I decided to do the Dragon Quest-inspired tileset for a project I was planning called Let It Rain, as well as the tileset that came before that one. Once again, I only got so far on both of them. My biggest project came next, which would be the PHO tileset that spanned one year. At first, it was just a small collection of tiles for the PHO website. Well, I continued this style for a while and it became my biggest tileset ever. After looking at it one day, I decided I didn't really like the style anymore. At that point, I switched to the brighter style. I also started doing tiles for Pokémon Acanthite at that point. This tileset was the first tileset that I would do inddor tiles for. Well, for some odd reason, I decided I would see how they look if they were 32x32 tiles, and not scaled. That led me to create the 32x32 set. That set was also going to be used for an original idea, but it never came through. Well, after giving it some thought, I decided I would ask Kyledove if I could use his newest Johto style. That leads me to the style I have been using. Well, was using. I am not doing tiles anymore, but I am doing bigger pixel projects. Things like the new Shuckle I did.

Anyway, here is my work, divided into sections. I do not claim any rights to anything that I have modified. Like I said, a lot of it is really old.

Very, very impressive! You really seem to have put a lot of detail and effort into your work. I'm especially taken by all your trees -- so much texture on such a little space! Your maps are very nice, as well. I can't imagine making many maps because of all the copying and pasting, but you've made things that would look right at home in a game.

I'm nowhere near your skill level, so I'm having trouble finding anything I don't like. Keep up the amazing work! Bravo!

wow, very well done. the only thing i can suggest for your newest tilesets is that you give the objects darker outlining. there's an issue with how light they are because they are so well done.

other than that, i love the November tileset.

@Webus: I would like to do that, but getting that sprite alone to look right took about an hour and a half; time that should have been spent doing homework. If I had more time, I would attempt it.

Anyway, small little update to Tileset 1. Check the first post. I made a new tree and a cut tree.

Amazing, absolutely amazing!

Everything is spot on, with great detail on lots of them. Things like the Poke Marts/Centers look exactly like they are in the real game

My favourite would be the 3rd one

oh wow those look awesome.

only suggestion i have is on the grass tiles. they could probably use less intensity. they stand out too much that i think seeing a character's overworld walking over them would look awkward. i would just try to soften the pixels in the grass.

Thanks for the comments, Samson. About the grass, I know it is quite busy, but it fits the style of mapping it was made for. That is why it is not toned down.

Omg they rule (:

I like the g/s/c revamp. Try make an rby revamp, too. I'm sure it would look good.

EDIT: Kay, critism:
Some tree tiles have an ligther grass on them, some have darker. I dont think they would fit together on one map.
The GSC mountin is a little undershaded. That, or there is little contrast.
Othervise, it's very good and ther rule.
Oh, and one major flav on the houses: the outline. Try making the outline ligther on left side and darker on right side, so it looks like light source comes from there.

The 1st tileset is really good. I don't like the 2nd.
The Harmony tiles are the best, but nobody (expect you) can't use them :( .
Maybe just this one Palm Tree ?

Alistair

Sorry, but nope (but that might very well change, thanks to the problems with Harmony right now).

Anyway, soon I will reveal a tileset that I made specifically for a special website (Not saying who), along with a few maps.

Wow nice work man... I just adore your trees :P I'm not sure about the the one with the flower on top though. It's a neat idea, but it doesn't feel right.

One map caught my eye:
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2930/furankimapsu4.png
-The trees look cool, but a bit too long.
-The pond could use a border. I like the signpost though, old and broken :D I bet it says no swimming hehe
-The house... no need to comment...

Keep it up!

If I forgot to mention it, I will mention it now: Those tiles were made for one of Cartman's South Park hacks, so they are supposed to be very simple, seeing as South Park is made out of construction paper. I tried to capture that feeling, but ultimately failed, as you can see.

January 6th, 2008, 12:47 AM
wowza. i completely love the house under the gym set. also really loving the triangular building at the bottom of the sheet. it has that beach house/auditorium look to it.

your tree tiles are flawless too. you should make a map using that palm tree and that beach house. sure, city on the beach is an old'd, but those houses are just too gorgeous to not see a themed map.

the only thing i can leave a critique on is the wooden brick houses and gym tiles in the PHO tileset. the concept is clear that the roofs of the buildings are exposed to lighting that separates the north and south side of them. the problem is the lighting is a little too soft for the north side of the roofs for those buildings. maybe it's just the pattern on the roofs of those buildings that makes it look less like the north and south side of the roof, or maybe it's just me... XD

do you see what i mean tho?

Alistair
January 6th, 2008, 06:25 AM
Yeah, I noticed it. I have really been meaning to contrast it a mit more, but I have been mainly concentrated on making new tiles.

And axlefoley, I have tried making interiors before (Even though it was a while ago) and they were terrible. About th caves thing, I already have 3 mountain sets and plenty of rocks done in the same style (Though I should make a crater and stalactite and stalagmite).

wow, absolutely beautiful. i love how you inserted grass/bush tiles in between the tree tiles. a lot more aesthetically appealing than the standard continuous tree tile set up.

only thing i can comment on is the flat mountain range tiles. the pattern for the mountain walkways have a volcanic look to it rather a mountain. maybe you should simplify the pattern so that it looks less like a repeating crater kind of thing... if you know what i mean.

Just tell me which tiles you want, if you want me to reinsert them. I also have many more, just check here, in my thread, and tell me which ones you want. (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=104577)

Could you insert all of them in?
Would you like me to send you a patch of my rom or something?

I like the map, but as before, the ledges are a little too dark, you don't need to change the palette, but just make them lighter perhaps?

Also, On the edges of the water ponds, shouldn't there be a sought of shadow? Like a darkish blue colour? It makes it look a little better, though i'll leave it up to you!

Good job though, as always.

Samson
January 19th, 2008, 07:25 PM

that dome building is beautifully designed, but it just needs a few technical fixes. the outlining is quite distorted. you should use some anti-aliasing techniques to soften the edges.

other than that, brilliant work you've got here. love the wooden brick harbor.

Thanks for the comments. About the dome building, I'll see what I can do about it. I know it has problems, mainly because of the 15-color limit in Pokémon ROMs (Luckily, I have one color left).

Anyway, I have updated the tileset, with the ocean tiles and animations. I also have a new map, PalmBreeze Beach. This is not the final version, as I plan to make a hotel for this map and make the map itself bigger because of it.

yay! a beach. looks great ^.^ the pool of water at the bottom left is a little random considering it has a current.

oh and i don't think you need to modify the palette of the dome building much at all. perhaps the darker shade of gray used on the roof and support poles could be a bit darker so that they stand out just a little more and give you more freedom to rework the shape of the black outlines.

@CheesePeow: I'll make a version without the point, but I will offer both.

@Wichu: Of course I will make more. Even though most of my sets are incomplete, they at least have the basics, so anyone can use them and not have anything stick out (though ROM hackers are going to be out of luck for this set. The palette for the green in the tree alone is 12 colors, and that doesn't even include the grass palette).

Anyway, a small update to the set, an unnamed map, and my avatar I made for my PMBD account.

WoW, that is sooo cool... It looks more real, more like nature, or something... It really looks like a forest. I am not sure if this is supposed to be pokemonish, but if it is, the shading's a bit off... You should add a darker part at the top, to make it more round looking.

@DarkPegasus: Nope, these aren't meant to be Pokémon style. If they were, I would shade them accordingly and use a quite more limited palette. Also, PMBD stands for Paysites Must Be Destroyed, a website dedicated to keep all Sims 2 custom content free (even stuff from The Sims Resource).

Hey, just a little update. I have not stopped spriting, but rather I have been playing games and figuting out a design for my game, Let It Rain, and I think I have an idea of the style I am going to go for.

Anyway, to back into the hang of spriting, I decided to do a devamp of some Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart tiles, so they would be able to fit in a hack. They most certainly are not the greatest, but the practice certainly helped (and it will show next week or so).

I also toyed around with an isometric style, but ultimatly gave up, due to my inexperience in the area. Here is the lineart, if someone wants to play around with them.

@AR: Yes, that does mean I am quitting my other style. I still found too much Pokémon-style in them. This new style is less Pokémon.

Anyway, thanks for the comments. I have been working on a website, which I was going to debut my new set on, but my webhost's server crashed (and I really don't want to upload 20MB of files over dial-up). So instead, I am just going to post them here. I know, I don't have very many at the moment, but this new style takes a lot of time.

Actually, there is. Instead of the dark ring like in Pokémon tiles, I made the grass a shade darker. Maybe I should have made it two shades...

Anyway, here is something I drew because I was really bored. And yes, it is supposed to be in black and white.

Well, I got really bored at school today, so I drew this. Yes, it is a traffic cone. I was inspired by the one sitting in the parking lot.

Well, I just recovered this from my flash drive. I drew four potatoes, each are different. I also tried an all-black outlining style, which is becomming popular at Serebii (I still prefer colored outlines, though).

Well, I have given up on the Fakémon. I don't really have enough time to go about and perfect it, as I do with my tiles (which don't take nearly as long). Speaking of tiles, I have some new ones, but only Neo-Dragon has them (and has permission to use them), so watch the Pokémon Protectors thread periodically for updates. Also, I will post some new tiles here eventually, as I have decided to make a fangame, mainly to get me into the swing of Sphere (so I can develop Let It Rain).

Well, my computer is currently down, but do not fear! There is always Paint on my parent's computer. Anyway, instead of making a Pokémon Garden rip map, I decided to sprite a new tree for my fangame (which is going to be made in RMXP, with Poccil's starter kit, not Sphere like I had planned). Now, I know the image is a GIF, but that is to prevent thieves (I did a little Google image searching, and found many of my sprites appear on the first page, which obviously leads (as has already led) to theft), so please do not comment on that. Now, obviously, since I already took that measure, I do not want people using this tile, so please do not ask.

There's a bit of a perspective issue going on with the houses. Let's look at the least triangular one as an example, shall we?

Pokemon is a top-down esque game, it uses tiles in a fixed perspective and so on. Great.
The house now follows that rule of the standard Pokemon games, birds-eye view and all. Okay.
Now, let's take a look at the triangular house. Now, the house seems to feel less connected with that rule, seems to be 'higher' which results in, us, seeing the house as facing us than more towards the ground.

Then let's take a look at the dome. Most likely the worst casualty of a perspective error. It seems to be almost facing us directly than focusing on the ground or so, like the houses on the bottom, and my first example. Fix those, and you'll be better off. :3

That's because this is FR/LG style, not D/P/P

Ryan Cordell
June 23rd, 2008, 04:36 PM
It will be somewhat disorienting to those who can spot those tiny flaws. Please don't try to edge yourself on a style as an excuse. This is why it was criticism in the first place.

Alistair
June 23rd, 2008, 04:41 PM
That, and the fact that the dome is actually an oval, and not a perfect circle. Therefore, the dome is actually in the correct perspective. The triangular house may appear to be wrong too, but it is in the correct perspective. This is due to the way I made the roof, which I made that way because I do not like to overuse the same pattern. That, and the building is not that deep, just really wide.

This does not mean that youy need to go the long way around. All you need is Surf to cross over the pond, and you are there. The fence is there as a preventative of people going to the gym early and wiping there Pokémon out (Yay, fake game objectives!).

stellar work as always! just one thing: i think you should revise the darker shaded tree (the spiky pine tree). the dark outlining is a bit too dark and is a bit of a distortion when it stands out too much on your maps (especially route 67). the trunk is a bit too dark as well.

but on that note, i love what you did with the grass. it's so much softer now.

WOW!
I don't even know what too say ,these tiles are amazing...I think you could like make a real game with these and put nintendo out of business. ^_^
Also I've been trying to insert the tiles into my game but all I've managed to do is screw up the palletes so that I had to start all over
so can you help me with inserting as much of your tiles into my game as possibleand I would give you obvious credit. ^_^

Nice tiles you got there. But did you ever think about going into more Pokemon stylish tiles? I mean yours are really good. But if you try to make them more Pokemonish it'll be better i think.
Oh and i really like your DP stylish tiles.

Hey, thanks guys for keeping the thread alive. If it weren't for you, it would be dead.

@Rejnbow: Well, I don't want my sprites to be completely Nintendo-style. That is why I add my own "twist" to them, if you know what I mean.

Onto the pixel-oriented news: I made some new tiles for the PHO tileset, and I also adapted some of the Harmony tiles to it (since most people don't seem to get that they can use them now). Here is a small map, too. Anyway, here ya go.

wow XD
those new tiles look great :)
i like the dog house lol.
The game buildings are pretty unique too.
whats with that "your logo here" thing? whats that about?
keep up the great work.

EDIT: That building on the bottom right has no shading on the 2nd lv door...
was that on purpose?

Hey, do you know when these are going into the next PHO Rom Base?
I'd love to use it for a new hack later! XD

Alistair
August 27th, 2008, 05:31 AM
Thanks for the comments, you guys.

@ Atomic Reactor: About the "Your Logo Here" thing, you can insert your own logo into the space, and make an animation out of it. That is why I put them in different frames. About the door on the top of the building, I guess I forgot to shade it. I was up at 12AM GMT -4:00 making it.

@ ~Wind: Sorry, these will most likely not be in a ROM base anytime soon unless someone is wiling to make one. As I said before, I don't make ROM Bases, and I won't. Sorry.

By the way, I got RMXP back. That means more maps are coming.
That could also mean I will make a fangame.

Looking great man. If you are talking requests, got any "city" style tiles.
Something like different objects you might see in a city- or path/road ways... Just an idea.

Thanks for more comments.

@ Yuoaman: I will start some indoor tilesets when I am done with the outdoor part of the PHO tileset.
@ Neo-Dragon: Thanks for the suggestions. I was actually just thinking about spriting a streetlight.
@ Fudgy: Eventually I will write a tutorial (and a legitimate one I might add. I know the tree spriting tutorial I made sucks).

Anyway, I am kinda on a spriting rampage at the moment (at least in my eyes, these take a long time to sprite in my schedule). I just managed to make a new map some new buildings.

Just to keep the thread active, here are some converts I did a long time ago. They are of Final Fantasy tiles, I forgot which one they were in.

I tried once. Granted, the tutorial I made was really poor, to say the least.

Anyway, I ripped some platinum tiles last week, but I forgot to post them (here). Here they are. By the way, I decided to do some indoor tilesets when I get the time.

The tiles are really amazing alistair.
if you don't mind, i'll try to make a rombase from your tiles, credits given.
but i have to say out of your whole tileset, i found the "skull tree" to be the best looking because it lacks symmetry, which is a big + for tiles and originality. I also think the lighthouse looks good, but the red tip looks too...strange to say the least.
and i'd have to say outdoor tiles, they are much more important than indoor tiles, even though indoor tiles would be nice to see from you. the tiles are looking great, although some of them could do better.
well, best of luck on tile-making, and i hope you can make more work like this!

Yes, well I have quite a few Zelda rips in there.

Anyway, here is the new set I am working on. As it says on the sheet, DO NOT USE.

http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/6388/kymotonianstyletileset2xn9.png

As you might have noticed, I am using Kymotonian's (Kyledove's) style, which is why his name is at the bottom. Full credit goes to him for the style and some palettes.

wow "Don Patch" ..... well ... those are goods are good :p :) ....... I can see that you some at the top at the spriteing world n.n .... plus you know how the tileset should be and the colors how many can be used and the space how much it should take and by that you can apply all the rom hacking rules for making pretty good tilesets.... only I know is it should be 16x16 <_< .....

anyway you are doing great and keep it up "Don Patch" :)

That "Route-C6" reminds me of one route in GSC... Ah, I remember! It was near that pond where you battle/catch Red Gyrados. The (something) of Rage, isn't it?

Anyway, nice tiles!

Alistair
October 16th, 2008, 02:21 AM
Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I know the Halloween scene could use a bit darker palette, but I really didn't want to change all those palettes. About Route C-6, I actually made that off the top of my head. If there are any similarities, they are completely coincidence.

Anyway, I had to do a little project for school dealing with pixels and Paint, and something else... I can't remember (even though I did it 5 minutes ago). Anyway, here it is. It is actually a part of a bigger picture, but I do not want to show the rest. It is a portrait of me, except with blonde hair (my hair is black).

http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=160&pictureid=11938

Oh, and my teeth are not like that either. In case you didn't get it, it is supposed to be funny (even though it isn't).

Hm. :3 You're very good, one of few really skilled tile artists out there. I'm an aspiring tile artist too, although nowhere near your level.

...However. I can't say I'm too fond of your using Kyledove's style. :/ His style is definitive and very pretty, it's true, but I appreciated your tiles all the more because you had your own style and you didn't try to imitate anyone (except for perhaps official Pokemon style, and even so yours had their own personality.) Go for your own style instead. ^^

(Although... I suppose since you're spriting for Acanthite, you have to tweak your style so it looks good alongside Kyle's tiles. [ohgod rhyme] Still, though, keep your own flavor to 'em, so people say "those tiles are by Don Patch" when they look at them.)

Alistair
October 16th, 2008, 10:58 AM
Yeah, I would have used my own style, but if Fang wants Kyledove, he is going to get Kyledove. Anyway, I did try to add my own style a bit. If you noticed, my house is quite different than anything else you would see (though since it is kinda based off of my real life house...).

Great tiles. I like all of them exept the light house at the bottom. It needs less shading at the bottem. Aside from that they all look great.
