Short summary: a sweeper is a pokemon with high speed and attack, trying to inflict as much damage on an opponent as possible, preferable OHKO'ing them. You have 3 types of sweepers: physical, special and mixed. Physical uses physical attack, Special uses special attacks and Mixed runs a combination of both.
A wall is what's used to counter sweepers, so it must have good typing, defenses and HP. Again there are physical, special and mixed walls.
A tank is something that can take heavy hits and hit back hard as well. This needs high defenses and high attack. A good example is Rhypherior. Awesome defenses and a great base attack, but a hilariously weak 40 base speed. Curse is an often used move on these pokemons, as it raises attack/defense (yay) and lower speed, which tanks lack anyway.
A good, balanced team consists of:
1 special sweeper
1 physical sweeper
1 special wall
1 physical wall
and 2 out of annoyers, stallers, hazers, BPers, tanks. Or another sweeper/wall if you want more attacking/defensive power.

Don't forget Spikespinners like Forretress.
Your team should have no more than two pokemon weak to another. If you have Magmortar, Electivire, and Arbok on the same team, well, thats dumb XDD
You should have good coverage against the most commonly used pokemon.
Like Garchomp, Mence, Bliss, Milotic and others. It needs to be well rounded in not only roles, but type matchups too.
