Type doesn't do anything, it's the Egg Group.
All the Pokemon in the certain Egg Group can mate.(But of course, have to be male and female)

Any two Pokemon can mate if they're in the same 'egg group'. But if they're in different 'egg groups' then no they can't, even if they're the same battle type. For example Torchic is in the Ground group and Charmander is in the Monster group and the Dragon group. But since they don't share the same group they can't mate. Search on the internet for Pokemon Egg Groups to find a list of which Pokemon are which group.
EDIT: Partially beaten. -_-

Shaymin's right, it has to do with Egg Groups. Torchic and Charmander, while being the same type, cannot breed, because Torchic belongs to the Ground group, while Charmander belongs to the Monster/Dragon groups. However, Charmander can breed with Dratini (Water 1/ Dragon) because they both belong to the Dragon group.

And for goodness sakes, don't forget gender. Otherwise, yeah. Same as above.
