Hello and welcome to my breeding project. This post will be updated regularly, in an effort to teach people who are new to IV breeding the way it is done, as well as updating my wifi team with better team members. I may eventually offer these Pokemon out for cloning and redistribution, so if you can offer cloning let me know.

Ok, so in an effort to get some good IVed Pokemon on my list of wifi battlers, I thought I'd start with one of the best defensive walls in the D/P game, Hippowdon. I didn't give this guy much thought at first, but after using him on shoddy I was converted. Here is the eventual point I want to finish at:

Hipppowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EV: 252 HP / 6 Att / 252 Def
Nature: Impish
Earthquake
Roar
Slack Off
Stealth Rock

with at least these IVs (speed last)
31/x/31/x/31/x

basically giving him as much damage taking ability as possible.

Ideally, the best Hippowdon would have these IVs:
31/31/31/x/31/31;

although you are not likely to see it, it is possible.

In this post, I intend to give regular updates of how my breeding is going.

Day 1: The beginning
Since I am more or less starting my breeding from scratch on my D/P game (all my good Dittos are on Emerald just in case), the start is gonna be the hard part, having no real good selection of high IVed breeders to get me started.

I started with the following:
Hippowdon male. Mild, 18/27/3/21/24/29
Ditto, Modest, 17/28/29/31/17/9

I didn't need the max SpAtt, but it was my best Ditto so far so it would have to do. I held out for an Impish female, which took me about 40 or so eggs. Replacing the Ditto and adding an Everstone, I got:
Hippopotas female, Impish, 23/28/3/6/8/29

which in turn got replaced with:
Hippopotas female, Impish, 24/28/25/21/3/29

I was starting to cook with gas. Four high IVs, and I've kept that Speed IV all the way through, which will be helpful for faster Roars. I eventually got my first 31 IV with the following:
Hippopotas male, Impish 31/27/3/13/3/29

At this point I realised that Slack Off was an egg move, and the easiest way was to breed with Slakoth. So I figured I would try and pass that max HP IV to Slakoth (and the speed if I am lucky), learn Slack Off and breed that back to my female Hippopotas. HP is actually one of the hardest IVs to pass on next to Defence, so I was glad at this early stage to pull it out.

My DP Slaking was male, so that would have to be bred for a female (I usually do 2-3 eggs if I need a certain gender and the odds are 50%, as in this case. Something like Eevee or the starters with a 1/8 chance of being female take usually between 10 and 30 eggs to be female). I didn't hold out for a good IVed Slakoth, since I was passing one down anyway and the RNG (random number generator) for IVs would do the rest.

Taking a break now, since my battery light is going, but I will return with further updates.

Day 2: The hatching

So, I resume my breeding ahead of schedule. Picking up where I left off, I held out for a decent male Slakoth to breed Slack Off over to my Hippowdon. The result of this effort gave me:

male Slakoth, Rash, 31/27/31/17/26/1

which apart from that Speed was better than I hoped for. My first double-flawless parent, and one with good Att and SpDef too. Pulling my female Hippopotas out of my Box, I resumed my breeding of Hippopotas. To remind you, I continued with this:

female Hippopotas, Impish, 24/28/25/21/3/29

which overall had some good stats, although no flawless ones. It was a good start at least, and with the Slakoth I would eventually get some flawless female Impish to improve my parent.

I went through several iterations of breeding, changing the female each time (I only got one good male out of all my breeding, but didn't feel it was worth replacing the Slakoth for at the time, overall it's other IVs were lower). Eventually I got this little beauty:

female Hippopotas, Impish, 31/11/7/17/30/9

which gave me a good enough SpDef to play with. With both parents now offering flawless HP, and that high SpDef from both (26 and 30 respectively) as well as 31 Def from the male, I was all set to finish my breeding. After lots of hatched eggs with no real success, I pull out an awesome egg:

female Hippopotas, Impish, 9/27/31/31/30/24

which apart from the HP IV is virtually perfect. Once again my battery goes, but this gives me time to update on my progress. Hopefully this should be my final stage of breeding, but who knows? I may pull out a flawless SpDef or higher Speed or Att. It's really up to the Pokegods. But I am nearly there, and have a few 31/27/31/x/x/x spare to play with if the SpDef doesn't interest anyone, they are great (and Hippowdon isn't really meant to be taking special hits anyway, I just prefer the ability to take some weaker super effective stuff and hit back with EQ or Roar).

So, that's it for now, but it shouldn't take too long (relatively speaking) to finish this. As I said before, anyone willing to offer cloning and/or redistribution of the finished product is more than welcome to make use of this guy. I would do it myself, but cloning takes away some valuable breeding time, which I can use for my next projects.

Day 3: The grind

Not much happened today that was significant. I had changed my parents around, after comparing the odds with some breeding guides out there. I settled on using two 31/x/31/x/x/x parents, and leave it up to the RNG to pull out a third max IV.

Eventually I pulled one out with a double flawless. Since the HP IV wasn't being passed on too often even with both parents have it, I figured having one parent is probably just as good.

male Hippopotas, Lonely, 15/27/31/4/31/9
female Hippopotas, Impish, 31/27/31/4/0/9

That was the breeding pair I decided to use, and it really improved my odds of pulling out a triple flawless. One eventually did appear, at the end of the day's breeding:

male Hippopotas, Serious, 31/31/16/11/31/15

Boy am I glad this one is male. A Serious female with those IVs would be a wasted effort. So, now I have an even better chance of getting max HP IV, and the other 3 IVs that are flawless all have greater chances. I'm gonna hold out for a triple flawless female Impish (odds apparently are 1/856), and doing so I will further push the odds down for getting that perfect Hippopotas.

It's a good thing I have patience. Getting this guy took me literally all day. Breeding for IVs is not an activity you can do if you don't have determination of steel and the patience of a saint, and I can be really stubborn (read: a perfectionist) when it comes to breeding.

So yes, getting closer, but who knows how long it will take? The RNG can be cruel at times, but we will see what happens.

Day 4: The keeping

I won't bore you with todays details, since I didn't change my parents from yesterday. It was monotonous and boring, hatching lots of eggs and checking only to be disappointed. However, as I was about to take a break, I discovered a gem of a Pokemon that was definitely worth keeping:

Hippopotas (female)
ID: 25332 (my Diamond game)
OT: JEN
IVs: 31/27/31/11/30/31 - Hidden Power Steel 70
Current level: 1
Egg moves: Slack Off (also knows currently Yawn, Bite and Take Down)

IVs were checked using Metalkid's calculator and the Rare Candy method

So yes, this was perfect for my needs. Max Speed gives me faster Roars which are always handy. The HP/Def/SpDef are near perfect, and 27 Att isn't too shabby either. I'm not gonna get another one like that in a while, so I figured it was best to stop here and use this one. This may end up being traded if I can get some clones done. I will also work on an EV trained version for my finished product.

So, one down, some more to go. Not sure what to start on next, but I will keep you all informed.

Until next time folks, happy breeding and may the RNG gods smile on you.

Wow, that was actually pretty awesome. Breeding Projects are quite interesting, I must say. Nicely done.

Oh, almost forgot, faster roars r useless roar always goes last

It is useful when it's roar v roar, or roar v whirlwind

Not quite. For example, Calmcunes with roar were sometimes given a few extra Speed EVs. That way it could "outroar" other suicunes.

It'll want to maybe outspeed common PHazers, which I think is the idea ;)

Oh. Never thought about it that way.

ahhhh, doesn't roar always go last, or is that just Whirlwind? Anyway, you should think of Ice Fang over Roar on Hippowdon, otherwise it is completely walled by Flying types. (I especially had trouble with HP Ice/Grass Zapdos...:()

I do not think you should clone because i hear there a 2/3 fail chance

and i think iv breeding is awesome but i don't fully get the checking part ,how are you sopposed to check it?

you can get it IV by IV battle (lvl 100 battle) with IV calculator and rare candy method

Waker of Chaos

I, personally, would never use a Rare Candy on a Pokémon there's a chance of me keeping. I heard that it doesn't apply EVs. I guess it's fine if there are no EVs when you use the Rare Candy, but I'd rather sell it for nearly 5000 Pokédollars. That's just me, though.

Good job on the Hippowdon, Toothache. Though, I think that if you use it, make sure another Pokémon used on the same team can take advantage of Sand Stream's sandstorm. A Cacturne or Garchomp for Sand Veil, for example, or any Rock type, since they get a 50% Special Defense boost from a sandstorm.

What you do to check the ivs is to save the game then feed the rare candys. get the stats and soft reset. thous not useing your rare candys and keeping the pokemon lvl
