(Pokémon XP / Pocket Monsters XP / PMXP)
Made with RPG MAKER XP.

- Project is canceled. kthxbai -

Oh Joy! Yet another GOLD & SILVER entry!

It's based on Blizzy & Freakboy's RPG Maker XP version of the Pokémon Starter Kit, because I'm lazy like that.

Introduction:
I've been working on this game for over twelve months now, scrapping many ideas here and there, working on different projects, etc. Trying to learn how to create a decent, dark, enigmatic Pokémon game that would appeal to a variety of audiences based on its storyline, characters, battles, etc.

I'm trying to make it sort of a "Made-for-PC" game rather than an emulation of the official games.
So don't complain if it's not what you're accustomed to.

Target Audience:
Demographics for this game are Open-Minded Casual Pokémon & RPG fans between the ages of 13-30.

Story:

(Sorry, I'm not good at first-person fictional storyboarding so it may be a bit bland)

It's been four years since we moved to New Bark Town. I've done my studies and passed the Trainer's examination; now I can finally get my first Pokémon. I said goodbye to my mother as Marina and I walked to the lab.

Professor Utsugi's laboratory was unusually dark today. I looked across the room and found Utsugi being held hostage by a Nidoking. My childhood friend, Marina took a glance back with worry, seeing how I was protective of her and a Good Samaritan to others.

Another individual appeared from the shadows with long red hair. Kamon, protige of the great leader of Team Rocket.

I quickly looked around finding PokéBalls on the ground. I picked one up and threw it while a bright light emitted from the ball as the capsule expelled the Cyndaquil it housed inside. My gut was pulsating with my heartbeat, knowing that this was my first encounter with the cold hearted Yakuza.

Kamon raised his finger towards the Cyndaquil and ordered to attack with Dig. Nidoking took a side glance and complied with the command. The ground shook ferociously and damaged Cyndaquil to where it could fight no longer. I recalled it as Marina grew more worried.

Utsugi was at his computer desk calling in for our arrest by the Johto Police Force. He was scared out of his mind that he thought we were stealing his Pokémon.

Kamon then threw out a PokéBall revealing an Abra that teleported Utsugi & Kamon to a remote location.

Marina and I were still in the laboratory, the police were coming and we were scared. I looked around and found an open window where we could climb out and escape into the forest. The foliage was dense as we ran through it in an attempt to elude the oncoming Police force. We reached Route 46 at the end of the forest and escaped...

It's a cliffhanger like you expected.

Known Issues/FAQ:
Why is the name entry is delayed when typing and sometimes letters go in the wrong order?Because of the nature of the script.
The name entry script was not intended for instantaneous keyboard input and output.
Why do the Grass areas tend to generate computer lag?Because all grass tiles have individual events lying on top of them.
I do not know how to do terrain scripting so I cannot avert that.

Although Near Fantastica's Anti-Lag script is in effect, it does not affect the grass events. Why do the Battle scene intros generate computer lag? It's something with the script.
Player is able to run from any battle. To avert that scripting error, all battles have custom handlers.
Possession of more than one Monster may cause a loop following a battle after the death of the first monster.I made the demo so that possession of more than one Pokémon is not intended.
You will only encounter this problem if you put another Pokémon in your party.
The game screen is too small but the Full Screen Mode is displayed incorrectly. This game does not support full screen mode.
Why do in-Game pictures appear to be behind priority (★1 or higher) tiles. That issue pertains to programming script. Why does the Pokémon Centre sometimes teleport me to next city? That's under investigation, it has occurred to me spontaneously without notice as well. How come the bag screen disappears after I use an item.
I tried to implement a recycling system in the game, but something conflicted with the programming.

Tell me if it is really that unbearable.
When are you going to fix those stupid battle backgrounds?
Never, deal with it.
Those graphics suck, change them back!
1. Do not speak to me as if you are the hierarch of me. I don't appreciate that form of disrespect.
(Unless you're a moderator of some sort telling me that I accidentally crossed the line with something)

I speak in a respectful manner and I expect the same when responded to.

2. Deal with it. I'm sticking to those kind of graphics.
Why does the actual game look different than the screenshots?
Because there's music and sound to affect the mood of the scenario.
And the screenshots are a bit outdated.
I LIEK TAIPIN IN CAPS LACK AND MISPLING WRUDS AND GRAMMUR PORLY.
Your Post and/or PM will be taken seriously regardless of its informal appearance, and will be edited for clarity and interpretation purposes as I respond.

But please re-clarify your concerns if I had interpreted incorrectly.
I didn't read anything you posted nor the Readme file in your game,
Can I still talk about it?
Go ahead, but I suggest that you at least read this entire FAQ before submitting your own.
Can I praise your game?
Yes, it helps motivate me to work on it.
Can I praise your game and other games with the exact same text to increase my post count?
That's at your own risk.
Can I criticize your game?
As long as you have strong backing points, I'll appreciate your criticism.
Can I bash on your game?
Unless you understand how much effort I have put forth into this game,
No.

I've put in about a year and half's worth of effort and planning into this game.
May I suggest something?
Go ahead.
If it's probable and I like what I hear, I may implement/change/fix it.
Is your game a democracy or something?
No, it's more of a bureaucracy.
The gameplay is a bit too simple, when are you going to adjust the difficulty? If you chose Cyndaquil; Yeah, the game is relatively easy unless you don't know that fire is effortlessly doused by water.

I haven't implemented enough battles and techniques to start balancing out the game yet, so the game's gonna be pretty easy for the first stages of development.
When is the game gonna be completed?Never, I stopped working on this game.
When did you start working on this game?
Revision 01 = 2007 Apr 27
Revision 02 = 2007 Aug 07
Revision 03 = 2008 Feb 02

Basically one year ago with a crappy and half-thought out storyline.
Are you ever going to stop being lazy?Nope. My laziness is affected by my constant lack of motivation and self-discipline.
Why did you stop working on this game?Because RPG Maker XP doesn't work on my newly built machine running Microsoft Windows Vista and it's a pain in the arse to work on my sluggish laptop.

I was aiming too high with high expectations for this game.

And on top of that, people that I don't know already hate me.
And you waited this long to tell us you stopped?!I forgot that I still had this forum.
I can't keep track of everything I do on the internet.
Will you ever come back to work on this game again?Let's visualize the probability shall we?

Lack of support towards the project
Consistent and pestering criticisms against the project

As much as I'd like to go out and prove people wrong, this kind of business takes too much time and effort just to be scrutinized the hell out of in the end.

So, I'd say no.

Ah sorry about the screens, I'm kinda new to game presentations.

Battle backs have been a debatable topic for a while.
I can't really find a decent solution for it at the moment without being conventional.

As I said, this is supposed to be a "Made-for-PC" game sporting smoother graphics.
(The tileset was too large for each item to be individually optimized so I just pressed on an effect)

Which effect did you use to smooth the graphics? (I have Paint.net too)

EDIT: Never mind, I got it. Oil painting on brush size 1, right?

1) Don't give screenshots in JPG format, use PNG! PNG is the superior image format type.

2) Consider using Poccil's Essentials. It is a 100x than Blizzy's Kit.

3) Those Graphics.... In some places those graphics look nice, but others just don't work. (On Nidoking in battle it looks horrible...)

4) Battle Backgrounds: Change them! They are hideous!

Let me just ask, why purposely choose the name "Pokémon XP" if it's being used 3 other times and that it may get confused for them?

Foreword:

Jeez, I leave for one day and look what criticisms blaze beyond the horizon.
Judging upon what I am looking at, the results of my experiment didn't fare too well.

Well, on to the replies...

--

Which effect did you use to smooth the graphics? (I have Paint.net too)

EDIT: Never mind, I got it. Oil painting on brush size 1, right?

Yeah, it's a pretty neat effect.

1) I thought that JPG consumes less bandwidth and is an easier load for dial-up users.
I have consideration for those who may be less fortunate.

2) I have heard of Poccil's Essentials/Starter Kit, but I had already started developing it and repairing the scripts and other stuff eight months ago with Blizzy & Freakboy's Starter Kit.
I am not in the mood for starting from scratch again and letting all my umpteen hours of amending scripts go to waste.

And let me fill in the blank for you: "It is a 100x more complex and inflexible than Blizzy's Kit."
I said that I wasn't making this a conformist emulative game.

3) Yeah, I noticed that; But I cannot give each graphic set individual attention without occupying a great amount of time.

4) Please read the above posts to see if your issue was covered before submitting a reply, thank you.
Battle Backs = Battle Backgrounds, Look for it

Let me just ask, why purposely choose the name "Pokémon XP" if it's being used 3 other times and that it may get confused for them?

To clarify, I did not purposely select this name to be confused with five other projects.
(I found two more online somewhere)
It was purely coincidental.

I made this eight months ago as a project for my past-time to prevent boredom.
(And I kinda worked hard on making a title graphic for it too)
I did not do research on if the title was currently in use or not, until I was constructing this thread and thought about it currently being used.

--

Afterword:

Ok, under R&D I should:

Change battle backgrounds to something less complex.
Remodify in-game graphics

Thanks for your criticisms, I'll get back to work after I'm through with Developer's Block (Variation of Writer's Block (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Writer's_block)).
I did a marathon of working on this in another country over the twenty-one day course of winter break so I'm pretty pooped at the moment.

Um, Jake? IIRC, I was the guy who first really used the name "Pokémon XP", and that was only as a domain name. Besides, how many of those other projects by this name actually got completed?

Don't criticize the guy so much.

I didn't see any others have Pokémon XP as an actual competed game when I was looking it up either.

Well, mine's not really completed.
I just have the basics of the storyline (and its branches) established.

I'm still stuck working on Chapter 3 in the game. 15 Chapters remain with umpteen hours of work left until I complete at least a
Release Candidate version.
(Current Storyline: 18 Chapters Total = 5 Linear + 5 Neutral + 4 Hero + 4 Villain)

look good. keep it up . i wait for you

Based on other's opinions, my game isn't too good graphics-wise.
But, thanks for the motivation. I'll try to get back to this project when I can.

So basically,
Tileset & character sets look better when oiled
In-game graphics look better when pixelated

I'm just glad at least one of my radical ideologies towards a modernized Pokémon game was accepted.

And I need that macro too, because I had to oil up the graphics manually and doing that for the rest of the character sets might take a couple hours.

And welcome to the community.

Sure, I'm not really working heavily on it right now.
It's about 43.1 Mb Uncompressed
And 28.4 Mb Compressed as a ZIP file
(Most of which are music)

And thanks for the macro, that saved me a couple hours.

I like the idea of so many outcomes of the story and the weather feature.

Thanks, I liked how True Crime Streets of LA had multiple story endings so I was kinda influenced by that.

Well, the starter kit wasn't perfect.
I'll try to work on the game whenever I have free time and I'm not on War Rock.

Love this game only one question why that type of graphics? Why not something better?

What was good about this game?

And what do you suggest is "better"?
I don't really like the official GBA graphics either, but I'm too lazy to redesign/recolour the graphics in the game.

Have you ever heard of vitamins they stop you from being totally lazy cause really those graohics are ok but you must aim high however it is your game so do what you have to after all one opinion does't matter.Continue on the game and i wish you well in making it.

Thanks,
But I'm still brainstorming how the next chapter in the game should be played out though.

And I do take multivitamins daily, but I expend most of its anti-laziness wonders on schoolwork and my hobby as a computer technician.

HEY I TAKE BACK WHAT I SAID ABOUT THE GRAPHICS IT ACTUALLY LOOKS DIFFERENT COMPARED TO THE SCREENSHOT.HOWEVER WHEN YOU ENTER A BATTLE THE GLARE STRAINS YOUR EYES ALSO THE WRITING IS A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO SEE.THE TEXT IN CERTAIN AREAS LIKE WHEN YOU ENTER YOUR BAG AT WHERE IT SAYS ITEMS THE TEXT IS ODD.

Hey, I take back what I said about the graphics.

The graphics look different compared to the screenshots.

And when you enter a battle, the glare strains your eyes.
And the font is a bit difficult to see.

The text in certain areas, for example:
The 'Items' text in the bag appears odd.

Edited for clarity and interpretation.

By "glare" I assume you mean by the screen flashing when a monster is expelled from the Monster Ball.
My beta testers and I, have had no problem with that before.

About the font:
I assumed that Arial is a global font so I used that for easier localization in other people's computers.

The game was originally supposed to have the Pocket Monsters Ruby/Sapphire fonts;
And the images used for the User Interface were outdated*,
Hence the reason why the text in the Bag and monster data areas appear odd.

*The interface graphics were from the first version of Pocket Monsters XP.
The game in this forum is currently the third version of Pocket Monsters XP.

I played the game and i must say, you've got pretty much scripting knowledge!
So much i stopped making my game because i will never have that knowledge.
I opened thx RPGXP file in my RPG maker and saw the huge scripts, but...
There's one thing that pushed me to stop playing.
And for that one reason it hasn't opened ever again... A shame...
The fullsrcreen mode was... messed up! Quite a shock!
The window was too small so i had to switch to fullscreen.
But overall: Nice battles, cool story, a few orientation problems and nice remake of the regio.
7/10

A lot of people seem to be complaining about the graphics and how he's too 'lazy' to improve them. I think the main goal of this project is a modernised and more adult story, so he's probably trying to get the story board and such sorted out before working on the eye candy.
Love the oily effect, a very nice shortcut. I may use something along those lines if I make another game with pixelated sprites.
I think this has some potential, just don't get discouraged by the comments of many PC members that can't seem to cope with a different styled Pokémon fangame, which you'll get a lot of.

Thanks for the review.

The game wasn't meant to be played in full screen.
(Ask anyone who's used a Pokémon Starter Kit)
The "Read Me.txt" file in the archive should have covered that issue.

Most of the scripts were from the Pokémon Starter Kit by Blizzy and Freakboy,
I only amended and added certain scripts to enhance the gameplay.

I, myself am not a scripter.
I just happen to half-understand scripts by common sense from my previous experiences.

About the orientation... well, there was no orientation.
I tried three times to make one already, but I disliked the end results;
So don't say I was lazy on that.

And just because other games may be better doesn't mean you should stop working on your game.
I know that my game isn't the best in PokéCommunity, but I'm working on making it as entertaining as I possibly can.

You have your own individually unique ideas, you should work to voice those ideas.
Even if you don't know scripting, just do the best you can and strive for excellence.

"Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal -- a commitment to excellence -- that will enable you to attain the success you seek."

Completely true.
You read my state of mind like a friggin' book.

I made this to appeal to those who are not so hardcore fans of Pokémon, especially older Pokémon fans.
(Which I think the franchise is doing a less than satisfactory job to retain)

I am prone to mixing Pokémon and a controversial concept together.
(In this case: Pokémon + Mature storyline)
Just like I did with my AMVs.
(In that case: Pokémon + Rock/Metal/Trance/Alternative)

Of course I am met with constant opposition in whatever I do because the two elements that I use are said to contradict.

I know I cannot please everyone at once.
I especially cannot please close-minded people.
