Heh....that is very true. But it's something I do intentionally. I just believe that the eye candy should be the functions and the systems of the game, and that the story should be discovered within the game. If I told you everything right now, where would be the real excitement of playing the game? Besides, the BC thread is locked, on purpose too, and I come here once in a while just to show off some of the systems I've done.
But then, surely the point of a game is to play the game? These features you're showing off look fine and pretty and all, but they add nothing to the actual game. I'd understand if they were mini-games or a fancy new message system, but that's not what you're doing. If these features you're showing us didn't exist, the game would be just as good.

I notice you have the location window show up outside the actual game part of the screen, but not the messages. If you're going to have the game itself only take up half the screen (an utterly stupid idea in its own right), you could at least not have the messages cover up part of the game. It's not like there's no space to spare.

It's frankly disappointing. Not only are you suffering Duke Nukem Forever Syndrome, you're not even trying to improve the game - you're making doodle apps. I'll bet you haven't even applied it to the trainer card to let players sign it, which is the only possible game-related point it could have. I definitely think you've forgotten you're making a Pokémon game here.

I would have said all this in the Blue Chrome thread, but as you say, it's locked.

Yeah, Maruno is right!
For me is better to release a full game the most fast possible, even with unfinished sprites! After going to improve it (like Raptor Ex). Try to think like your fans that need to wait tons of year to see the full game (if it come out)!

I believe this as well, that's the purposes in this thread:

This thread is for all purposes intended to be a place where developers wishing only to show off individual screenshots can do so.

So basically Luka is doing what this thread is intended for, am I right? If you want information then you should just visit his thread and view the info he has for us already, or just wait for him to re-open his thread.

Also I agree with Maruno:

the game itself only take up half the screen (an utterly stupid idea in its own right)

That's pretty stupid, but that's my opinion. I liked the old dual screen you had, it looked very nice and went well with the other graphics in the game.

I think the new screen resolution is really great. I don't mind it taking up space.
I would play the game itself in the same size anyway, so what's the problem with extra space around it for HUD-stuff?

I really love your systens Luka, they're really awesome.
I really enjoyed the Area-names showing up as a "speech-bubble" from that little (i)!

I'd like to take the time and thank both sides for taking their time and writing constructive criticism. I may not agree with everyone, but I really do take all of you into consideration. So let me give you my response:
But then, surely the point of a game is to play the game? These features you're showing off look fine and pretty and all, but they add nothing to the actual game. I'd understand if they were mini-games or a fancy new message system, but that's not what you're doing. If these features you're showing us didn't exist, the game would be just as good.
Personally I don't agree with your point said here. I think that systems have a lot of influence over what the Game Play feels like. Also I'd like to state that they do add to the game, as they allow the user to customize the way they'd like to play my interpretation of Pokemon. I prefer customization...a lot, and I really do believe that it does elevate the personal feel for a game. Also from personal experience, I beat the official Pokemon games quite quickly, then run out of things to do, get bored of them and don't play them again. This is not what I wish to happen with Blue Chrome. You may consider the little things I put in as pointless, but they are here to allow the player to be distracted from the game itself. With the ability to download Apps, I'll also be able to release the game, and just host the apps online, and everyone will be able to download those without downloading the whole game again. Just the way I see things so far.
If you're going to have the game itself only take up half the screen (an utterly stupid idea in its own right)
It may be just me, but you're contradicting yourself here. The old dual screen system (which no one had objections to), is exactly that - half the screen for game play, half for interface. Technically I've enlarged the screen since this one is actually 600 x 400 while the standard DS one is 512 x 384. I've tried using larger screen sizes than the current one, but it just looks weird and wrong (not to mention the enormous lag problem). Frankly, I was the one disappointed seeing that most of Blue Chrome's systems became less and less unique. There is no point now in having a DS system when even the least experienced game maker, can just randomly download a starter kit and have it themselves. Some of the features I implemented into Blue Chrome, were beginning to be copied, and in my opinion, Blue Chrome's charm was fading. So I needed something new that would stand out once more, and show that the competition is up - because that's what a lot is about: competition.
I'm sorry I'm not able to satisfy everyone, but I want Blue Chrome to be a step from other fan games, and a step in my dev progress. I too feel that I have been crossing the lines with the things I put inside, but is it really that bad? Is it really so bad to have more than less? It might be pointless to you, but it makes me glad to know that people won't get bored of my game as soon as they beat that Elite 4. On another note, previously you mentioned earlier that you aren't against having mini games, but are against my doodle apps - well...the doodle apps are a replacement for the minigames. Unfortunately I don't have any ideas for any minigames but I had plenty of doodle apps to spare, so I did that.
Yeah, Maruno is right!
For me is better to release a full game the most fast possible, even with unfinished sprites! After going to improve it (like Raptor Ex). Try to think like your fans that need to wait tons of year to see the full game (if it come out)!
That, on the other hand, would imply rushing the game, which would significantly decrease the game's quality. Then you wouldn't be happy with the game either...
I think the new screen resolution is really great. I don't mind it taking up space.
I would play the game itself in the same size anyway, so what's the problem with extra space around it for HUD-stuff?

The extra space around the screen isn't going to be wasted. Like you implied, it will be for the HUD to display other things such as the Hygiene system, time, weather and whatever else I put in there.

I'd like to apologize in advance to the mods for clutting the thread with off topic stuff, so I'd like to end it now. If you want to say anything else, or give any other feedback, feel free to PM/VM whenever you want (that goes for replying to this post now). I don't want to be a reason for a thread to drift off topic, or get locked due to irrelevance.

Some of the apps. look very cool, but some of them ain't that much of a need, like the Drawing tool. Though, i got a suggestion to make the game cooler, maybe you have already done this idk. Though you should make it you have to buy apps, with pokemon money you earn, that would make it more interesting.

Wanted to share some screenshots of two new things: 1) The first of 3 new playable Pokemon, Pansear (can been seen moving around & using Fire Punch) and 2) A new location, Ochre Lighthouse -- which has just been taken over by Team Rocket (naturally, you're going to have to evict them).

@Sichlor: Just one thing I should note for you; in the first screen the bridge over the train isn't drawn according to perspective. Basically to backwards stairs at the north need to be shorter than the ones at the south because they are on a different incline. Extend the flat area one tile north and consequently shorten the backwards stairs by one.

These screenies show one of the new playable Pokemon, Panpour in Routes 6 and 2, respectively. You can see the new information display system in the top right corner & mini-update text in the bottom right corner of the 2nd screenie. You can also see the new type based damage in the top screenie (super effective, not-very effective, doesn't affect and critical hits etc).

Love the layout. It all looks quite well done.

My only gripe is that the actual design of the look of the fight graphics (fightbox, stat boes for pokemon, etc) and their color scheme don't seem to work for me. It could be a personal preference, but maybe something a bit more sleek would help.

But that's minor, as I do love the originality of the design, and the background graphics.

okay, here's mine

Lets start with the bad...

-When taking the snapshot, try to make sure the grid isn't over it, it hurts the actual picture.
-Its a bit open. Too much space thats just simply empty. Not a lot on the side of too open, just a bit.
-Its too, 'blocky', as in a lot of the stuff is square, rectangled shaped. Usually the best maps do what they can to avoid this, and only use it occasionally throughout a game.
-It looks like you're combining tiles from different Generations of Pokemon. This is often suggested against because of how awkward many look together.
-Paths seem very random in the town.

The good...

-Looks well made. No tile errors from what I can tell.
-For the size I believe would be best, the small ornaments around the town seem to be in a good number

Overall, the mapping skills seem pretty good, its just that the creativity and structure of the town isn't shining through as much as you'd want to.

And that's what i have to say. Take it however you'd like.

I'll praise this, for the sole reason that the lower screen is a different size to the main screen. Despite being a dual screen (which I dislike), it's still interesting by being different to all the HGSS clones people mistakenly believe is the absolute best format for a PC game. You're being different, so thumbs up to you.

Given it is a PC game, though, I think it's safe to assume there's a clock in the taskbar. Why repeat the feature here, seemingly just for the sake of filling space? Surely there's something better you can put there instead, like the map name or the Repel count or something.

I can barely tell at a glance what the menu options are, given the icons are half off-screen. I think Options and Save should be in the same area, at least (they're both meta options). Could do with a bit of a redesign, I think, but the basis is good.

Look, theres not much bad at all, its actual looks very nice.. but heres my points,
Yes, it is a bit to open, but you could always just add plants, trees, npcs etc to fill that in.
To fix up the blocky-ness try make the trees more all over the place, if you get what i mean, not just in a straight line.
TBH, i like the mixture of tiles.
There is wild Pokemon grass in the starter town? Not a very good idea, what if you run into it without the Pokemon yet?, maybe just put flowers there, better option.
With the paths, there normally the made from people continually walking on them, but with yours, there just not in the right place, try make it leading from the start of the map, to each house then stop it, thats what normally every other map does.
If you don't know how to take a screenshot of the map without the gird, tell me and ill tell you how..

Thats it for now, but great job :)

This is a kind of pointless screenshot, all you've done is colour various parts of Blue's VS Sprite green and insert it into Luka's script. I think you need to try and make some custom characters instead of really bad recolours.

It looks good, but, Your palletes are too mixed. You're using different tile styles that don't match. The skinny trees, namely, are more tropical than your B/W Syle trees. They don't mix well. Besides that it looks fine.

Damnit! I knew I'd heard Aurelia somewhere before. It just kept popping into my head while I was thinking of town names and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know, guess it means I can't use it.

Onto your actual screenie though, very high quality sprites you have there. I like the look of your houses and your PC, though the Pokemon Centre looks...I dunno exactly what, but something. The layout of that particular shot reminds of Saffron City, I should add.

Oh and with those little bits of fences you have there, you should make the stick out-y bits at the ends curve off or have them continue into the buildings adjacent to them; either way works. At present it just looks like they've been sawn off.

seeker
June 1st, 2011, 08:12 AM
Very nice Max, everything looks great overall. Although I recommend you give those fences a darker outline. They blend withe the background path a little too much, on top at least. I also think that your main road would be nice with some texture, even some gritty dots or something along those lines, to give it that paved feeling rather than looking too smooth. Other than that everything looks great to be honest.

I really like this screenshot. As previously stated, it's simple. But that's really the beauty of it. The lush trees really go with the calm lake. (I'm assuming it's a lake), and the palette just works. Though in the future... if you're showing your new overworld, make sure you aren't in shade so we get a better visual. :P

Screenshot One
Now this is a screenshot. Everything here works; you've got a good fog going, you've applied what I can assume is a green and or yellow tone, and the tiles are really nice.

Screenshot Two
Again, I really like this. Autumn is definitely one of my favorite seasons visually, and you pretty much nailed it. The big tree is really pretty, and the houses look pretty good. My only nit pick is with the rock/mountain tiles, you have some grey pixels on the outside of it (attempted shadow maybe?), I don't really think it looks all that fantastic, but it's not too distracting.

Looks good, glad to see you are making progress with it! :D

If you want to take a screenie of an entire room, including objects, you could try using:

// Put in Key Press event or something
var sur;
sur = surface_create(room_width,room_height);
view_enabled = 0;
surface_set_target(sur);
draw_clear(c_white);
screen_refresh();
screen_redraw();
surface_reset_target();
view_enabled = 1;
surface_save(sur,working_directory+"SS.png");
surface_free(sur);

Works great for me when I want to include objects in a screenie OR when I want to take a screenie of a large map.

http://imagedatabase.wikispaces.com/file/view/mapshot1.PNG/242254951/mapshot1.PNG

I have some issues with this screenshot.

(1) You're mixing tiles from pokemon with tiles from other games/places (the odd rock and the odd trees).

(2) You're placing trees (which have grass at their roots) ontop of rocky surfaces. This is something you simply don't see in Pokemon games.

(3) If you are going to place trees, please place them uniformly and with the correct spacing between them. If you don't know what I mean by this then please look at some official pokemon maps to see how they use trees.

The general concept, shape and design of the city is quite good -- it's unique and fairly interesting.

You've improved the tree placement but you've missed the issue that YOU CANNOT PUT TREES ON ROCKY SURFACES. In Pokemon games, trees are only ever places on GRASS.
Well, now there's an exception. I want my game to stand out. Trees can grow on rocky surfaces in real life, so I don't see why they can't be on rocky surfaces in Pokemon games.:)

Personally to me it looked fine the first time.
Thanks for the feedback. I kinda liked the 1st version 2.

Yes, I know some DP buildings are in the BW style, but I couldn't find any BW biuldings besides to the Pokemon Center & Mart. Credit to ThePokemonChronicles of deviantArt for the DP tiles and chimcharsfireworks of PokeCommunity for the BW tiles. (The custom Pokemon Center & Mart is made by chimcharsfireworks! Give credit to him for it!) Also, if you want the tiles, I have added them as attachments. Here are the formats:

DP Tiles Only - ThePokemonChronicles and Kyledove
BW Tiles Only - chimcharsfireworks
DP & BW Tiles Together - Both ThePokemonChronicles and chimcharsfireworks

You don't credit the person who compiles tiles alone, the D/P ones contain tiles from Kyledove so you'll need to credit him as well.

I know you want trees to grow on rocks, but it really just doesn't look very good. If you take away the green shadow below the tree, it'll look a bit better. But really, you should try editing the tiles and making the rock that's around the roots cracked/broken to make it look a bit better and realistic.

I'm not very good at pixel art. Can someone else do it and I give credit to them? The tiles are in the attachment. If you will, will you please put the new tree on a blank part of the tileset? I would like for you to use the Combined Tileset. And also, will you make the tree look like roots are stikking out of the ground. But the ground transparent, so it will work with both grass and rock.

Okay, I changed it so it would look more realistic. It is now known as Vivian City.
Vivian City is a city surrounded by mountains. You will see Hikers here often.

Right. Look, you are mixing way too many styles of tiles as people are trying to point out to you.

4 of your buildings are from DPPt
1 building is a rather strange looking custom tile which looks 3rd gen
the gate house is HGSS
the small trees are 3rd gen trees in 5th gen colours
the big tree is kymotonian's 5th gen tree
the grass is kymotonian's 5th gen grass
the green grass ground looks 3rd/4th gen
the path tiles look 4th gen
the rocks look like Alucus' custom style (though I could be wrong)

The point everyone is trying to make is PLEASE PICK ONE STYLE AND ONLY USE TILES FROM THAT ONE STYLE. Otherwise it looks really, really awful.

Also, there is a tiling error where you have placed the big tree ON TOP of the grass tiles. There shouldnt be grass tiles underneath it.

That's a very odd place for the lamppost to be illuminating. Lampposts in the real world shine light downwards, meaning the base of the lamppost is in the middle of circle of light. What you've apparently got are spotlights at an angle of about 45 degrees, pointing northwards.

Alright, I started making some random pokemon maps using an old version of CNG's HGSS Kit.
The first one I call: 'Bulbasaur Shrine'. It's an open spot in a forest, where a bunch of bulbasaur, ivysaur and a venusaur live.

And the second one, I call: Random map of goodness.

In action:

I don't know who made the tiles of these, they were in CNG's HGSS kit, of which I can't find the credits.

I also made a video of my newest map. It's a village.

Credits: Calis Projects, minorthreat0987.

Please give me some criticism on how I can improve my maps. I only make these to improve my Pokemon-map mapping =D They are not used in a project.

Pebblegrove City.

Please try to ignore the event squares. :x

It's very nicely done. I've personally disliked the series' penchant for having towns made up of like three houses but in this map it doesn't bother me at all. There doesn't appear to be any obvious tile errors, but I do have two little gripes with the mapping.

In regards to the house on the right; I think it would be appropriate to move it one tile downwards, thus making the path below it only three tiles high and leaving you space to make the path above it straight (and also three tiles high).

I would also recommend moving the nearby gate house down two tiles, to where that tree below it is, or two tiles up and adding another tree where the gap is made. That way it either lines up with the middle of the three tile lower path or the middle of the vertical path immediately outside it.

Overall, good job. Cheers, Jim.

No, I mean the tree has a *1 at the place where you want to walk while there is something. So you can pass through.

I'm developing a GSC-styled game with Pokemon Essentials at the moment. The screens below are still works in progress. I need to figure out how to edit the font color.

The menu screen. It doesn't look too pretty now, but I'm working on it. Also take note that I'm adding new pokemon. Balphin, Kittoal, and Tadoledon are the starters planned for the game.

You have great graphics, and I see you've put a lot of effort into this.
You have overused Screen tinting WAY too much though.

I barely see what's what in some screenshots.
Screen tinting can be nice, but only if you use maybe 10% of your current
tint.

@ ZeroArmada - your screens look great, however as mentioned above the tinting looks a little over the top, but I love that what appears to be ruined version of the S.S.ANNE, even if it's just a generic boat, it looks awesome!

Palettes and tiles look great too!

Yeah, people have brought that to my attention. It's a constant tinkering process with the tinting settings, so nothing is set in stone at the moment. One of the regions feature in my game has been set to ruin essentially, so I really wanted to give a feeling of ambiguity and intensity.

Well, finally an update. I didn't have time to work on Deep Balance lately due to some preliminary exams (the results are terrible though, strangely enough), so I hope you enjoy this screenshot. I'm using a new tileset from now on, with BW buildings instead of http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/g/i/gigatom.gif?3 (http://gigatom.deviantart.com/)'s. Why hello Falkner.

Very interesting, reminds me somewhat of the one from Black & White.

The shading on the second leader's hat looks odd, so you might want to work on that, and as for the 3rd... You may want to consider restarting from scratch, it looks very bad. Not meaning to insult you, just a couple of things you might want to work on.

It's starting to look good, but why the inconsistencies in the outlines on the overworld? I'd suggest using either a solid, dark outline, or use selective outlining all over the sprite. Right now the hair and hands look strange because of the differences in style. The trees and grass are simply brilliant, but seem to detailed when compared to the rest of the tiles. And what's with the random red splots on the screen? Overall it looks great, just a few nit picky things.

Neo-Dragon
December 27th, 2011, 07:59 PM
Thanks for the comment Conan Edogawa.
The red spots on screens are leaves blowing by. Generally blowing from right to left.
We no longer have a dedicated tile artist and this is why we have the inconsistency. Other artists (including myself) have added tiles to the tilesets that we have needed and they do show a lower quality compared to the original tile artist's work (since he was amazing).
I'll also look into editing the color outlines of the OWs.
Editing to existing resources can be pretty easy to do and generally improved over time.
I'll work on it ;)
Again - thanks for the comment. That's what I was looking for.

I love the palettes and tiles used, they're very attractive. The custom overworld style is great too, but the head is a bit strange, as well as the skin palette. The fact that the eyes are so low down looks odd, I'd suggest either trying to make the head one pixel taller, move the eyes up under the brim of the hat, or shrink the hat by one pixel. The skin is more of a personal preference, but I think it's a little pale in comparison to the bright colors of the clothing and the richer colors of the tiles. Other than that though it's very nice.

Spaceemotion revamped the UI for the DPad and action button in ZENFORMS.
I know a lot of people did not like our old DPad so we hope they like this one.
The action button - the button on the right - is context sensitive and will react with a new icon based on what is in front of the player.
It also hides when not needed.

There is some errors with it being a pixel off in places, that's an error because I didn't update the code when I added the new resources. I'll just have to change the button positions.

I have 2 map files for the hometown, 1 was an older file format with some errors and the other was different file format with a new way to handle some layers- with fixed tile errors.

Your shadows suffer the same fate as pretty much every game around these parts. (including my game). Building shadows are to the right of the building, while objects like trees or signs are below more so. Or just generally not matching proportion compared to other objects in the game world. It's not an issue for me, but don't be surprised if you get a few more comments like that.

This is actually just a promotional screenshot more or less. I used it in my latest little blog to help emphasis the ability to choose your starter from the 15 starters in the original games.

The shadow is a script, this helps eliminate the need to put shadows on hundreds and hundreds of OW sprites.

The corner of the water is correct, it is loose grass hanging over the edge ;)

What's up with the weird overlay in the first screenshot?

It's a forest... :P So I thought...why not put a canopy fog...?

I like the tint of it, but I don't like the botches of "non tint" lol.I'd suggest remove those, but keep the tint itself as it does give a cool moody vibe to the map.
