I like the tint of it, but I don't like the botches of "non tint" lol.I'd suggest remove those, but keep the tint itself as it does give a cool moody vibe to the map.

But the "blotches" are the openings in the canopy. If I left it as just a tint, it wouldn't look like a forest. There are four types of canopy I could choose from:

-RMXP leafy canopy (overused, I don't think it looks much like a canopy to be honest, anyway)

-DPPt canopy (which is what I have, and I think it fits best)
http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/b/b1/Eterna_Forest_map.png

- HGSS canopy (which could look alright, but I feel it isn't as nice as the latter)
http://pokedream.com/games/heartgoldsoulsilver/walkthrough/images/ilex_forest.png

- BW canopy (which are tiny little dots scattered about like light dotting through the treetops)
http://www.serebii.net/blackwhite/birijion-ow.png

Idk. Those were my choices, and I thought the DPPt one fit the best. I could try the BW one, I guess...

Even though it's in the official games, I think it's a bad design choice (I mean @Gamefreak for even putting it in). It looks silly for the type of effect they want. I'm assuming their goal was to make it like light coming from the trees, but it's overlaid on the trees. It would be different if the effect only applied to areas that were walk-able and not ON the trees themselves which should be making the effect in the first place. The light is hitting the the tree itself is creating the canopy meaning it shouldn't be layered like that.
I think you should improve on their design and not mimic it. You have a nice OW style, and a custom one, so why copy gamefreak with that design?

Edit: I might as well give you my suggestion on what to do lol.
I'd create a layered effect and make at least 2 images for the effect. I'd then give the images 2 different "z" values (depth/layers). Make one image possibly over the map and the other layered into the map itself minus 1 layer that the tree tops are on.

Just pointing out that DPPt are the only versions where the light overlays the trees iirc. The other games it falls under the trees but over the walk-able path.

I would not call it a bad design choice, more of a poorly executed innovation (as far as DPPt is concerned)

My problem with your fog layer is that the contrast is way too high. It really clashes with everything else because of it. I would darken it a bit to make it blend. As long as the area is lighter it will still have the effect you want, and it is a nice effect.

But I agree with Neo as far as it being over the trees and how terrible it looks. If the light is coming through the canopy, it should not overlay what is essentially the canopy... if that makes any sense.

I love the Bog screenshot though. We have a national park here where there is a bridge which is the walking path and it goes all through the park, I actually used it as a concept myself :D

Oracle of Hours was an 'April Fools' joke over on Vg Maps back in 2004 i think?
But, many people have 'attempted' rom hacks/fan made games of it, I'm not doing that, I just feel like mapping that world map :3

Well I don't think it would look better without it. I mean, yeah, it isn't really logical, but maybe that shadows come from even bigger trees we actually don't see. What I mean is that, if the fog wasn't over all the map, it would look even more weird than that, because how could that "tiny" trees cause that effect?

In any case, I like the effect, what I don't like is for the forest to have such a narrow path.

I recently showed off a preview/teaser for the ZENFORMS: Protectors battle system.
We have been revamping the entire system. New UI, new battle ground, and all new game code. The reason was to add more features to the battle system and a revamping made the most sense since trying to add it onto the old code would of broken a lot of it.

A teaser video here.

Looking good. Is one of the Zenforms really called 'Fugly', though?

Also, the (rather good-looking) animated background makes the still sprites look lifeless. Any chance of having small Black/White style animated sprites?

Yup, that ZENFORM on the video is really called Fugly.

The sprites won't have individual animations. They will jump around the battle system but nothing like black or white.

Then do a Street Fighter-esque sprite animation. My point is that when the environment looks more alive than your party characters, there's something wrong with your graphics.

Just a mock up for the character selection screen. With elements of the introduction from the professor. The characters will move upon selection and the un-selected one will remain still. The animations will be faster in the game. Everything is currently undergoing development.

The sprites are just placeholders currently, and will be changed to look like Skyler and Kelly at some point.

I tried an additional image in the background, but it just became much too busy for my taste, so I scratched it and left the center of the screen rather plain.

Neo-Dragon
February 7th, 2012, 01:30 PM
Worldslayer, could you make it so the unselected sprite is also semi-transparent too?
Aside from the animation, I feel the unselected sprite should also be faded a bit to make it clearer which gender is selected.

OR
Apply an effect to the color image behind the character sprite. Such as move it outwards (off screen) by about 10 pixels when not selected and to the default position when the gender is selected.

Atomic Reactor
February 7th, 2012, 01:31 PM
@Wordslayer : I think it would be cool if the chosen one was colored, but the other one was black and white. And a pokeball in the middle would be kinda cool? idk

Worldslayer608
February 7th, 2012, 01:45 PM
I actually really like the idea of the semi-transparent sprite. Black and white would look a little off I think.

As far as the colored background portion, I was going to have it slide into the screen upon it showing up. They would slide in from the edges then the sprites would fade in. From there I will see how the image transparency will work. Thanks for the idea Neo :).

I tried a pokeball in the background, and it just became too cluttered.

I'd say just show the 6 Pokémon in the bottom bar (nothing else), and perhaps when necessary put the message box over it rather than on part of the main screen. The menu options should only be shown when pressing the pause button (Esc/X), in which case they should be a more traditional pause menu that covers more of the screen (to properly show the game's been paused).

A status icon for each party Pokémon wouldn't go amiss.

Worldslayer608
February 10th, 2012, 08:58 AM
One thing we are trying to avoid, is having to use the Esc/X keys to open the menu. We want something that utilizes mouse input. Reason behind this is that we want menus to be quick to access without the player having to look down to hit a certain key.

If you were playing the game, and wanted quick access to something, would it be the party or the menu? Reason I am asking this is to just get a feel for what everyone thinks might be more important to see that way if we end up requiring a button to open the menu, which one would you guys like to see be visible at all times?

Maruno
February 10th, 2012, 10:41 AM
Could you use a right mouse click to do what X currently does ("back"/"cancel"/"open pause menu")?

Worldslayer608

Could you use a right mouse click to do what X currently does ("back"/"cancel"/"open pause menu")?

Sure. Currently, right click has no function set for it. That is a solid idea. Another idea we had was to have arrows at the far ends of the bottom part of the screen, you could clock them and it would move between the party screen and the menu. This allows the player to choose what menu they want to see most of the time. There are many concepts I am sure we will play with and I hope to continue sharing them with everyone to get feedback :D

"Pokémon," the tale of a young boy's journey to impress his long-lost father.
Mock-up with placeholder graphics.Ravecat! You're back!

As for the screen, could I first ask if you made everything yourself? This is very impressive, especially for a mock-up. The background has a canvas look to it, which sort of makes it look like a more classic RPG than Pokémon (which is a good thing). One thing I would change about this is the mountains in the back ground, as they look a little out of place.
The sprites are nice, although Pikachu may be going a little fast. The shadows are a little large though, and they're at a different perspective to the background.
I can see where you were going with the text box, and I do really like this stlye (heck, I've put it into my game), but I think it needs a little more editing to fit in with the rest of the UI. Or vice versa.

Thank-you very much for the comment!

Actually, sadly, I didn't make anything except the UI.
The Pokémon and trainer are by Joshr and the background is a rip from Mystery Dungeon.

The animation: I agree with you on that, and I will also be changing up the whole interface if I do continue this.

It was mainly a focus on the direction I'd like to take the system more than the graphics, I think.

Thank-you! Xenotime is looking great, by the way.

I really like the way you display the sprites, it takes out the need for backsprites. I think the only problem I have with it is that the shadows don't look the same as say, the shadows from the trees. If you could get them to look the same, it would be really cool. That's just a small nit pick though, it looks really awesome in general!

To explain why it doesn't look 3d at a distance its because I'm using a Orthographic camera, everything in the game is made using 3d models and textured accordingly

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v445/Bamboogod/Gameexample2.png

So, I made the forest/plains/platforms in blender(forest took...quite a while), and its worth noting they would be animated if used in game.

I do like the health bar hud, but I don't care for the text box hud. Its the right part that bothers me, its just too much. Also, the spot right(or left, for the foe) of the health bar, would be used for status conflictions.

Basically, I like to know if the sprite/3d look conflicts too much too.

The lab one looks bad, but not horrible. The big problem is that you're just lining up a bunch of the same tiles in big rows a bunch of times. It just doesn't look good. Also, for the stuff you have in the bottom left corner, you can blatantly see that part of them are missing. Look between each one at the top of each. That's a big no no either.

The town one actually looks a lot better. The problem is again that you don't seem to have put the full tree sprite when they are in columns. Its clear the top of the trees are just simply gone. The only other concern I may have with this is that it doesn't look like there are enough tiles separating the closest place to the border the PC can walk and the actual border. If there are not enough tiles, then you see black when you walk along the trees there. That also would look bad.

Yup, the grass patches look way too rectangular. At least add/remove bits like you did with the one in the middle left. The patch in the lower right is a bit big, too; maybe move the trees closer in and shrink the tall grass patch?

Also, the short grass looks a little barren. Try adding some more paths or flowers.

Otherwise, it's a great map; very D/P-ish in style.

Copper Town:

Route 2:

Copper town looks good. pretty standard looking. could mix it up with a different house style (as in you have 3 of the same houses next to each other).

route 2 is just a giant patch of grass with a few ledges at the sides, not really that good. right now, a player can just walk straight to get past the map. thats not good design. try put some trees or ledges in the middle of the map. give the route a distinct shape.

Pallet Town revamped for my game:

nice, looks pretty good, the only advice i give is possibly move down oak's lab a little bit, seems to be too close to gary/blue's house.

heyey,

@mineox100:
like DarkDoom3000 said, the Copper Town looks very standard, and need some different house stylings. All in one but it's good to work with it and it's nice to see it in a game (:

But your Route 2 is also like DarkDoom3000 said, very hard. Think about, you have passed the half and your pokémon has only 3 HP left and no potion or oran bery or else in your bag. you can only pass with a lot of luck this route /:
Build in some ways the player can go to avoid wild pokémon battles. You can place some grass-tiles in the way, but not like you did here on the screen ._.

@Xavier_Pokenation:
Looks great only thing I dislike is the standard laboratory of Prof. Oak. It looks a bit different from the tiles. all tiles are a bit grey and then there is this house from oak which is shining in some bright colors. Maybe you could replace it with Prof. Rowans house. But it won't be necessary.
What I like on your screen is the pokébar on the top of your screen *_*
Looks great!

@thread:
My first time to publish a screenie here on this forum.
I saw a lot of backgrounds you all used instead of the standards and I'm not realy talented in drawing and pixeling, so I used some premade stuff from RPG VX Ace q:

I think it looks good, but what you think about?

first one is in 480x320 resolution
and second one is same screen just in 240x160 resolution

I know it's everything on german but I will also translate it into english (the text only, system is actually in english :D). So please don't kill me for this ._.

Tell me the truth. Does it look ugly or does it fit in some strange ways? oO
I don't know. I think it looks very good in some way^^"

So, your game is 3D? Seriously dude, when are you gonna stick with a style? You're contantly changing it, you're never gonna finish the game at that rate. Unless you only want to have fun developing a game...

The... Lab is that meant to be... The colours are horrible in comparison to the buildings, it looks somewhat an old building as to the more modern ones.

http://www.deviantart.com/download/296170421/smalltownsiville_harbour_by_rayquaza_dot-d4wbyk5.png - Smalltownsville Harbour
The boat is small, maybe half the canvas size or double the boat itself, the map however, pretty boring, but nevertheless, you can't hope for much in a habour... I don't recommend using rocks to block the players path to water, I would say a rail/fence would look better.

http://www.deviantart.com/download/296170606/route_1_by_rayquaza_dot-d4wbypa.png - Route 1
The trees in my opinion should spread into the map! Looks too square for me... Most routes I notice aren't man made!

http://www.deviantart.com/download/296170692/mortar_town_by_rayquaza_dot-d4wbyro.png - Mortar Town
This is the oddest town I have ever seen, why does the gym look blurry? Seems you have copied this from a very low res tileset but haven't gone over the tile colours... The cave has steps at the back which don't reach the ground and looks as if a builder has left them on top of the cave accidentally, personally, redesign the cliff tiles, I would and I have, so when using steps at the back, it looks less... Stupid... the mountain or wall or whatever that is at the top looks out of place... If it's suppose to stand tall above the city I suggest making the town 4 tiles higher and adding more trees to show its higher than the trees and so on, the more tiers a mountain or building has, the more tiles up the map should go, in my opinion. (if a mountain has 5 tiers, make the trees go for another 4 rows.) This however is not really a problem, I just think it looks odd... The water has a dodgy shading, like, it's missing a bit, the 2 corners on the bank, I can't really see it properly but it looks wrong.

There's also a tile error up by the sign at the top of the map. The base of the tree looks like it has part of another tree on it.
The lighter grass also looks a bit strange, not the shape of it, but the inside tiles. The patch under the two house in particular looks very unnatural, try using a few different tiles, rather than repeating the same one.

Not really a fan of orohnpokemon's tiles or Gen 5 ones in general, but it does look pretty nice. It's often hard to pull off wooded starting towns since most of them just have 4 houses out in the open and the only trees surround the town as a whole, but you seem to have done it well. The trees really seem to clash with the grass, though, imo, maybe you could change the palletes so the greens coexist a bit better. Hopefully the crit was half decent and good luck with the game, steve.

It's using a modified version of a Kit I am making in GameMaker to turn it 3D (the Kit is going to be 2D since it's easier for me work with). Looks very... Minecraft-y. I like the tiles.

How does the terrain generator work? Are you laying down layers of materials? If so, you'll be missing some cool landscape features such as overhangs.

I actually made something similar over a year ago. The way I did it was to use 2D Perlin noise added to a vertical gradient; the values of the noise above a certain threshold were stone, and those below were air. Values in the middle would map to soil, so you get a nice band of soil between your air and rock. Once you have a basic terrain shape, you can decorate it by adding ores to random stone tiles, and grass to soil with air above.

To be honest, you don't. I "take .Gif screenshots" by capturing the screen with video recording software and import the video in Photoshop to layers. Then, it's a matter of making an animation with the Timeline and then saving it for web and devices.

Some of your animations look odd... the flowers just seem to be randomly flickering through a few different shades, for one. And the multi-coloured grass is an interesting idea, but those colours don't really go well together. And the red looks unnaturally bright.

It's constantly there, there are other features to it, such as the whole you can move the game screen around and hide functions of the menu.

Got bored so made a new menu:
Side notes, background is animated, bar above Pokémon icons is a badge display. Can left click trainer to get info or right click for options. Arrow changes position depending on how close to the edge the Pokémon info box.

Thank you. The season script is already working, just need to add in the missing textures. Weather is planned and shouldn't take long to add. The dynamic day/night is done and will be working once YoYoGames fixes a glitch in GameMaker (I put it in the bug tracker). We're trying to make a revolutionary fan game. I basically took Venom12314's Pokémon Essentials DS and edited the placements and designation of bitmaps. The end screenshot came with my idea of the pokedex, trainer card and pokegear all in one. With syntaxes, I've found that it is mainly 'end' that needs to be put in for every block of script that has been started in a single page. Not to mention that this is the first time I've ever got something right with scripting.

I'd change the top of the boxes, they look very different from the lower half and I think they look a bit weird. The shadowcolor of the text should be a lot darker, this is a bit hard to read. Also, the battlebases aren't exactly looking good on the outlines with those white pixels. And lastly, the backsprite of Chiky looks really weird; shading isn't too good and why the yellow outline on the top of the sprite?

Aside from that, it looks like you're improving. Keep it up!

One of those trees is RSE styled, thus not fitting in, and the other one uses a total different pallette because it's meant for Erika's gym only.

As people have said, try to keep your tiles matching - even just one object that looks out of place can ruin a map since it'll stand out like a sore thumb. For paths, remember that they are formed by people walking on them, so when creating them don't just put them willy-nilly, place them on the logical path that people would follow when passing through the area. As well, try to keep the ledges as short as you can, only make them long enough to serve their purpose, but don't go so short that the map stops looking layered and just looks like a bunch of tiny outcroppings.

I'm really liking the city screenie!

However, there is a small overlapping error regarding the pedestrian crosswalk. The fifth line is overlapping the sidewalk. Also, I don't think a mailbox should be in the middle of the road. Perhaps move the trashcan back one tile and place the mailbox by the apartment complex? Regardless, it's a wonderful screen.

This is Pallisa City, the third town (counting your home) that you come to in Pokemon Melanite. In the morning, an old lady sits on the bench feeding the Starly. At night, an old man shows up to feed the Hoothoot. When you interact with either bird they fly away sometimes leaving behind a random Wing Item. (Health Wing, Clever Wing, etc). This is also the first time I've shown the girl character. It isn't much, just a recolored Kris sprite.

Please let me know what you think

At night, an old man shows up to feed the Hoothoot. When you interact with either bird they fly away sometimes leaving behind a random Wing Item. (Health Wing, Clever Wing, etc). This is also the first time I've shown the girl character. It isn't much, just a recolored Kris sprite.

Please let me know what you think

I rather like them and I see no real errors about the map itself. The only thing I have to mention is that the path tiles don't really match the style of grass you're using. I'd recommending using some Black/White path tiles (http://light-pa.deviantart.com/art/Black-and-White-Tiles-196333663). Aside from that, I give it a 9/10.

I'm not sure. I have put so much time into it already I don't know if I just want to let others use it. I'll have to think about it. Also the way I have it set up currently would make it hard to implement into someone else's game since it uses global variables which I am regretting but don't want to go back and change almost every line

Thanks. That is if I can even figure the entire thing out. I am trying to make it close to the actual PWT, but not completely. I don't know enough coding to do a lot of things...

If I do get this done, the battles against each trainer will always be the same 3 pokemon they use. Not randomly picked out of six, at least for now.

There won't be an actual stadium either. The battle starts from the tournament screen. I am using an animated .gif for the announcer so the talking frames will be off since he never really stops talking... haha

Your screens look nice Yusshin! I do think you went a bit overboard with the tall grass though. XD

Hey, thanks :D

and the region is called "Floran" due to the massive amount of natural green. That means trees, grass, flowers everywhere!

And though some people might disagree, I have small patches of grass in towns where wild Pokemon come out (night only). Usually Plant, Bug and "Urban" Pokemon can be found in them at night + they don't block paths; they just grow as an extension from a route beside walkways, since it's to be seen as a gradual change into an urban setting. Seems more realistic to me than all low grass, anyway.

There aren't any in cities, though. More like rural communities.

Pokémon Tower was a dungeon in game.
Changing it to a gym would be stupid, and would need to get rid of a gym, and make a new dungeon to balance it out.

All you need to do is find a way of exporting the individual frames of the image as PNGs and finding a script that designates an array of bitmaps in the "titlescreen" directory. Generally these sort of scripts would be put in "Main" or "SceneIntro".
