This is an implementation of an IV check system. It works by obtaining a mystery gift given out at certain events. Without it, it displays a message telling you to get the mystery gift, but with it, you will find out whether your Pokémon have good or bad IVs. My Bayleef appears to have appalling ones.

Well if you do want to know what IVs are, just go to the game mechanics section of serebii.net. Also, I agree with you in that it does look pretty official. (Although the vertical gradient does take away from that official look)

Pretty good, except the IVs aren't lined up... For example, the Sp. Atk IV appears too far to the right, while Speed is too far left.

Oh, and have you taken into consideration that the IVs are stored in the order [HP,Atk,Def,Speed,Sp.Atk,Sp.Def], but displayed in the order [HP,Atk,Def,Sp.Atk,Sp.Def,Speed]?

Very impressive maybe a darker color for the trainer customization menu..It needs to stand out a bit more with it being the menu.

I made a new shiny and reverse animation.

Not the best quality, and there's a bit of frame skip on the shiny one, but it normally runs at the same speed as the reverse one.

Any comments? Do you like the animation, or should I change it?

Oh, and the bitmap for the particles isn't finalized yet. I'll probably change it to a star or something.

EDIT: It now works in battle, too. But it shows up in the wrong place :|

EDIT2: Fixed. It works perfectly now.

If you've read the thread, you'll know I'm having another alternate colouring, called reverse Pokémon.

I'm probably not going to have animations - do you know how long it would take to do it for every single Pokémon?
But then again, if I keep them quite simple, like on Crystal, I might be able to do it...

And the 'bounce' isn't a separate animation for Shinx - it happens on FireRed and LeafGreen when you check the summary of any Pokémon.

What we have here is a panning background with an intro effect. Other examples are grass and rocks, not just motion lines. :B
Thankfully it works with small screen size, probably not with the bordered ones, but I removed them from options anywho. (Reason it'd probably not work is due to my commenting out of the line that handles the viewport.x )
Wasn't that hard to add... just needed to do a lot of optimising to get it to look good. XD

Next, Pokemon stats and a new Pokegear thingy!

With thorough messing about with the Pokemon Essentials kit, I think I can say I don't want to ever have to update. D:

Experimenting with backgrounds. I want to make a sort of anime style one but I can't digital "paint" very well. :< (The anime backgrounds have a painted quality at times.)

Much better. Thats awesome looking. I have a feeling because of Platinum that alot of fan games will use the dark HP boxs and might be over used.. But it does look really neat ha.

They have a painted quality because they are painted. It's a common thing for anime to have handpainted backgrounds. (Some of the most skillful anime is by Miyazaki, who has a tendency to do as much of his work by hand as he can)

Having a little time on my hands I decided to rip and compile a tileset consisting of interior items from Pokemon Garden.

I've used it to create a Pokemon Center.

As I've mentioned, it's nice. Very hospital like I must say, and your arrangement is good.

However, isn't the blue on the tabletops a bit too strong or sharp? It works, but it just seems weird. Also, Erik mentioned the couch, and it might be a good idea to consider changing the PC.

It looks too clinical... Aren't Pokémon Centres supposed to look warm and inviting? And I agree with Amachi about the tables...

But, I like the way you can see the edges of the ground floor from the floor above. It looks really nice!

That reminds me, I've got to post one of my own :P

Before blaming me for stealing ideas from Pokémon Raptor, I'd just like to say that I made this before OG announced that he would be including a ring menu. You can ask Archayos; I showed it to him first.

It's not finished yet, as I still have placeholder icons for the Bag, PokéGear/Nav replacement, and Trainer Card. I'll probably make another Exit icon too.

Anyway, should I keep it there, or move it to the bottom? It's currently obscuring the player :(

The couch is default from Garden and I'll probably leave it as such for now, though I could make it white as with the other couches.


As for your menu, I would suggest layering it like it's done in Secret of Mana. The menu is used to form a circle around the player rather than obscuring the character.

Are those tiles ripped, or customed? They're nice. :o Even if they don't really feel like your usual Pokemon Centre.
I think there needs to be a darker line where the wall meets the floor, because they're similar shades. The grey around the pink seat would be a suitable divide.

@Wichu:
I'm not so sure about the menu, but I'm not a fan of ring menus so all I can really say on the concept is not to use it ^^;.
I would get rid of the bevel/gradient though, unless you've got a similar effect on other menus and stuff, otherwise it'll seem a little inconsistent. I've noticed you do have a slight shine on some battle graphics, but the shine here is too faint, not crisp like in battle.
(I need to think up an interesting menu myself... but I might wait for the pause-infront-of-trainer bug to be fixed...)

@Avatar: Woah, that's one beautiful PokeCenter. Looks more realistic too. I'd suggest changing the colors of the stairs on that escalator, though. It looks like it's made of plastic at the moment.
Also, do you plan on releasing the tileset? : D

The new houses look much better then the old one Wichu. You sprite then yourself?
Is there a screen-tint or is that your palette? Looks kinda like morning time or something lol.

The houses, and pretty much all the tiles, are heavy edits of the Fangking's Johto set and the FRLG tileset. The palette is due to the tint; the screen was taken in the morning. Here's another one, with more tiles:

Some screenshots from my new platformer (see my site, JoshForde.com (http://www.joshforde.com), or my other game of which this one is based upon, Seeds of Time Online (http://www.seedsoftime.net), for details). The game is predicted to be released this month and will be freeware. Three zones, totaling of six levels (two per zone), three bosses (one per zone). I'm also considering throwing in a "Challenge Series" set of levels (of great difficulty) unlocked upon completion of the game.

Interesting... A platformer with RPG elements.

I don't really like the sprite of the player, though. It's not really round enough, and the eye looks ugly. The shading is also off. I suggest that you should try making the graphics in the same style as the face picture in the top left corner.

Man, you'd think this thread would be a lot more popular considering how many developers there are here, but then again they would probably just post the screenshots at they're own thread... maybe this thread is just to help advertise the games....

That platformer game with RPG elements seems interesting, but it isn't alone in that genre.
there's Cavestory, and that game is a platformer/shooter/rpg rolled into one..

Personally transparency doesn't suit a Pokémon game, the font isn't dark enough in this screenshot.

This is my second post in this thread.. scroll up to see screenshots of another of my games.

Some screenshots from Ultimate Tower Defense (http://www.ultimatetowerdefense.com) (ultimatetowerdefense.com (http://www.ultimatetowerdefense.com)), a game of the "tower defense" genre. It will essentially be a collection of around five or six tower defense games in one (each TD game being called a "campaign"), with the ability to load and play custom campaigns created by users. The UTD website will also have a place for users to upload/download/rate/comment on custom campaigns created by other users.

The following are screenshots showing the first campaign, currently titled "Tropical Trouble" (storyline: you are among a group of people stranded on a tropical island, and you must build towers to protect your hut [not pictured-- you would need to scroll further to the right] from the monsters who plan to enter and steal your food).

Iridium is no longer stuck in the custom FR/LG days, its in the DPPt Rips, kyles DP tiles and my own custom DP tiles era.
I hope everyone enjoys and it doesnt make anyone not love the project.

The GSC remake was before Iridium and is no longer in progress. Sorry :( But I am glad that you are happy about Iridium being back. :)

Looks great. The only thing that bothers me is the shadow under the palm tree. Make it a darker shade of the original yellow sand not a transparent black over the sand.

Time for my screen!

Here a prototype of my region map that i've been working on.
It's not final because i still have to add/remove towns and cities.

That region map looks good, but without Fly, it would be a serious problem. Every Pokemon region map has at least two major loops to facilitate travel (Kanto has 4, Johto has 2, Hoenn has 5, and Sinnoh has 5) Orre doesn't need them because you can travel from one end of the map to the other in one go, with or without fly.

Cheers. Nah I won't be starting a thread for at least 2 months. I'm currently on leave from the Australian Army GAP year (Christmas leave). And yeah, if I start a thread now it'll just die from no updates so I'll wait till after I finish or when I get more time to work on it.

I plan on uploading a demo with the battle system, because I'm not sure how it'll go on older more slower computers.

I'll post more screens of it later.

If I knew how to code, I would probably be saying, "Look at my pretty maps that are going to be in my game." Instead, all I can say is "Look at my pretty maps that have no actual use." Maaybe someday. But probably not.

Based on a real place in Russia. If you've been there, you'll probably recognize it by the flower patterns and fountain. It's not quite finished around the edges, but the fence was such a pain that I declared it good enough for now.

Just some more screenshot's showing Odyssey's new look which will be shown in full, when I get time to create a new thread, ready for the fresh start I'm giving the game.

And before people start commenting on the screenshots please note, the snow tiles ARE my own, you can zoom in and check if you like, the mountain tiles are heavy edits of the FR/LG ones with a SIMILAR palette to Kyledove's not the exact same. The snowy path is an edit of the existing SINNOH TILESET that Kyledove released, I just changed the colours of the tile, you can check if you like.

Hopefully no one will have any problems with these. I personally prefer this new style, it feels a bit newer.

lol I just noticed that TIME and ENVIROMENT should play a factor in the battles and these will show the improvement in malachite.

Hi I don't have a tread or a game but I did want to learn how make map so ugh here is my first three tries at mapping. A starter town, first route and second town with a gym. I really need critique on it because I don't think it looks interesting enough.



Thanks 2 Kyledove for the tiles. I can't find a good tutorial for making customs to match his but the gym was lame try.

Yeah same. Do you remember the Pokemon HD fan game. Well that's what it was called. I loved that. It used 32 by 32 firered/leafgreen tiles with a custom take on the overworlds.

@Shaggy Typhlosion: It looks out of place. Change that green box with the colors from a palette of a message box from the Pokémon games- add a grey boarder or something too. It would look better with the pokémon font used too.

And also if you changed the graphics and made it so that;
4 pixels = 1 pixel

I mean that you double the size of the pics, so that the HUD fit together with the rest of
the PKMN graphics, which are "doubled".

And I agree with Neo Dragon about the font too.

It's close, but I was looking more at what his identity could be ;)

Hint:
It's my own take (and revision) of a previous character I sprited.
He also happens to be a prominent character in some of the official games.

The screenshot has been updated if you want to see what a more finalized design for the character is going to look like.

@Avatar: You posted 3 maps on the previous page... The first one looks pretty good. Although, the grass on the top of the cliff looks kinda weird.. It could just be the ledge itself though, it just looks odd to me. idk. The cave map is decent as well, but you may wanna fix the corners of the water. It's the wrong ground tile... I'm not to fond of your map with wally though... It seems to open, and boring. Maybe add an NPC or 2, or some small bushes in front of the lab? idk, it just looks boring.

@cdrew: The maps could do without the shadows from the trainer, imo, it just looks weird. The tiles are decent, but they dont really go along well with the ow's. You may wanna change to DP styled sprites. Those would match better.

That is the ledge tile overlapping the grass. I'm well aware of it doing that and will probably remove the tall grass from the edge of the ledge.

The cave map is decent as well, but you may wanna fix the corners of the water. It's the wrong ground tile...
This I'm aware of too. It's mainly because the tileset doesn't have the proper tiles for the water edges so I picked the closest equivalent. I intend to fix it later.

I'm not to fond of your map with wally though... It seems to open, and boring. Maybe add an NPC or 2, or some small bushes in front of the lab?
Granted that this is probably not the best screenshot ever, I designed the map with the official maps in mind which tend to have very little decoration present.
I'll play around with it a little.

Alright sweet, also, I thought about this after posting, but adding some flowers would look pretty nice to.
And yeah, I've never really been to fond of the official maps, they're to open and boring lol. So I guess you hit the nail on the head their :P I liked your first map the best, cause it seemed more natural than official. But yeah, pretty decent maps in general ;]

This region is called Tarro, and it is the major (of 3) region in my game, which I'm working very slowly on. I'm only putting this up for show on a whim. The map contains about a dozen "hidden" areas (places where there aren't routes but where you can go).

You may notice I'm not using a 4th Gen style. Well, that's overdone, and I like this as it is (although I may make one or two minor changes at some point).

Opinions? Oh, and I may consider offering my services as a region map artist (even though in general I'm poor at artwork, things like this aren't difficult). Talk to me to find out more.

The jaggedness is the pixels. All the other colours are jaggedy too; it's just not as noticeable as for the dark green on light blue. I'll smooth them off in the final version (somehow - I'm not a Photoshop master).

I wanted the coastlines to be bumpy because as far as I know that's what coastlines are like. But there might be too many bumps in places.

I'll also work on the "way too much [darkest green]" thing. The more I look at the map, the more I decide the routes are too square, so I'll see if I can fiddle that a bit.

Hey everyone, this is my very first post on the forum, I've been looking at games in development here for ever though. I have been working on my own, here are some of my screenshots, I know it's not alot, but please give opinions :)

I like it better, mainly because the way you've presented it, it doesn't seem cluttered or spread out, it's more organized.

Okay thanks. I'm trying to weight the options of including two screens or not. So far it seems like people don't want it. But with the single screen, the style I would like to use ends up feeling way to cluttered and inconsistent.

my concern is with something I haven't shown here yet though, the bag screen. It's hard to make it look good and usable in the original style. It makes it look really cluttered and it's an effort to use it.

I had an idea that you could use for a bag system.
You could have the pocket's list on the top left hand side, with the list of items to the right of it, the item picture bottom left and the description under the item list.

Yay, another game with a dual screen system ;D. Great going on the UI, looks excellent. If I found it tough doing a dual screen in RMXP, it must of been heck doing the dual screen in Sphere :P

Actually in all honesty it wasn't to difficult. Basically the concept behind it was to enlarge the screen to the right resolution and then create a custom control for the camera system. The rest is quite simple too.

I guess that is one of the advantages of Sphere though :D

What is up with the dex text lol. Your a good spriter right? Why not sprite a icon for it rather then wait for HG/SS?
Maybe look around the forums for one to steal (kidding :P).

But yeah, keep the dual screen and maybe include mini games where for rock smash you have to smash though the rock on the lower screen by tapping it to many times or what not.

I don't want to harp on about it, and I seen a few other games with it, but defo keep the dual screen, its a neat addition and that style menu (the big green box) looks better on its on rather then clogging up the screen (like your sig.).

Yea I know neo. I already removed the mountain tiles. I put something new there lol. Also I dont know either lol I used them to represent different character classes like Rivals,professor and such.

Blue is a lot easier to read also.
I would stick with blue OI. And if you plan on using red, edit the shadow color... otherwise it looks to... uh, idk. But it's hard to read. You know what i mean?

Most of the rock tiles are from Pokemon Ranger 2, the mountains are recolored mountains from Kyledove.
Looking great though, I'd love to play a game with these kind of composed graphics,
they look great together ;)

The palettes you used for the hero's backsprite are yucky, and I don't think you should've use that backsprite as a base, use one from a younger trainer, lastly, the two backsprites together don't look good, again, I suggest you use one from a younger pokemon trainer.
Oh and the shading on each of those backsprites need a lot of work.

It's funny.
Malachite is what made me want to green-light my game.
Since I last used to come here, it seems everyone has
their own game now. So I wanted to shy away. But I hope
I end up creating something unique. People, if anyone could
help me in acquiring charasets and updating the battle
system to DP style. I could truly put this plot I've written
to work. These are the first two completed maps.
Not really any npcs. I need charasets badly. ;P

Yes it is a working version with a mouse click controle for the bottom screen and yes it is for an in development game, and thanks for pointing that out about the withdraw button I knew that something is missing. A lot is still to be done on it coding wise and some graphical but its getting there thanks for the support

Aah, 1-pixel wide lines!

Around the health bar, some lines are just one pixel wide. It doesn't look good if you're using Essentials' scaled-up GBA resolution. I'd make all your graphics at GBA size, then enlarge them before using them in Essentials.

Sometimes people gets skipped, its life, like said above, just quote yourself, rather than posting possibly rude complaints that you were skipped.


And as for your screens, they look nice, though my personal preference is more original designs, its still quite nice looking and i see no errors.

pokecenter is awesome. can you make me one, just change the walls to autumn colors like tan or a deep apple red. maybe change the floors to wood.. or you can just post the sprite links so i can o put them in myself.

He will probably say no or he might give you the tileset but then YOU will have to EDIT it yourself.

I don't think <~F.M.P~> is acctually putting those shadows to be in the game at all times. The trainer shadows are more like a watermark to either prevent theft or just to mark the screenshot as theirs.

Some small things:


Does the party go left to right then top to bottom, or top to bottom then left to right? That is, in a dual battle, will Cresselia or Combusken be used? There's no indication here, and you shouldn't just rely on "this is how the real games worked".
The lower case name for Juchille stands out against the capitalised names for the other pokémon. I would make them all just one or the other.
There's something funny going on at the bottom of the left hand curve for each box, some redness.
The bottom of the red highlight selection box (i.e. around Quilava) seems thinner than the other edges.
Might be nice to see some of those pokémon with status problems, so we can see how the symbols for those work. Same goes for the held item icon.

Why not make one on your own. It's better to have your own style (that still looks good) and you don't have to rely on rips from other games.

Anyways, looking good! Kyledove's old tiles are now considered kinda bad and unoriginal, but it is your choice of tiles. Good work on getting the partner Pokémon added.

@chimcharsfireworks - Hmm.. I'll see what I can pick out here. For your first screen, what is up with all of those flowers? I know there's no limit to the creativity that nature has, but some people mow their lawns. I suggest moving them away from the house and closer to the edge of the fence. The second screen, those swirled rocks don't match the others and it sticks out much more. For the graveyard WAY to much grass.

The steps at the top don't really fit the rest and it is a bit unoriginall to use those two houses in my opinion, even using two other house from d/p/p would be better than those I think. Your person sprite is good and so are the weather effects. I don't like how purple it is at all though, all of the above is my opinion if it wasn't that, as, in my opinion, it ruins it.
