With the launch of the new rules thread, a new Help and Request thread was required.

So without further ado, here it is.

Thread guidelines

Requesting a tutorial to be written for you.
Asking for help on how to do a simple action.
Asking for certain programs to help you with your game development.
For example, a sprite conversion program.
Requesting assistance when your code isn't working like intended.

Hi all, sorry i've been away for a while I'm going into x factor this year so I might not write to you all in a while longer.

I just need a bit of help with my own day/night system, I've got each section of the day (morning, day, dusk and night) set as variables on scripting.

I have different tilesets and maps for each area and for night or day (eg LITTLEROOT DAY and LITTLEROOT NIGHT). Is there any way to save the players location on the day map and transport the player automatically to the night time map through script or is there a less complicated way of doing this (EG changing tilesets automatically)?

I'm planning to make two regions in my game, so I need another 8 badges, but how do you add badges to poccils starterkit.
and I need a whole new box system for the second region aswell.
so how do you add a second box system that's only accesable from the second region?
please help me!

For the first problem, nothing needs to be done; just assume that more than eight badges
is possible.

For the second problem, follow the directions below.

First, create a new script section with the following code.

In the script sections PokemonUtilities, PokemonStorage, PokemonDebug, and
PokeBattle_Battle, replace all instances of "$PokemonStorage" with "pbPokemonStorage".

In the script section PokemonLoad, modify line 243 by replacing this:


$PokemonStorage=PokemonStorage.new


with this:


$PokemonStorage=RegionalStorage.new


The change will take effect only if the game is restarted or the save file is deleted.

In order for this to work, the region for every map must be explicitly set in the visual
editor (editor.exe).

Does anyone know where i can find a Ash charset or something very similiar.
I need it to show pictures when stuff happens, it doesn't look right when its someone like Lucas with a Ash picture as you can guess :).

There are several ways to do this. The first is to save the player's location on the map (I believe you can look up the 'Player x" and "Player y" functions of the variable portion of the even script. Look in the "Interpreter" scripts). The second way is to change the map's tileset. I do not know how to do this though, so you might want to ask about it on RMXP.org. I believe I saw at least one script that was supposed to do this there.

Well, the problem you're having is that they simply won't share their tilesets. That's because they've spent a long time working on them for their games, either through ripping them from an emulator or through screenshots. In either case, they got them at the original size (which is bigger than you got), and then they edited them to standardize them. To see an example, look at the Pokemon Gale - The Geor Adventure thread. The first couple of posts that have game info (other than the first one, which has been edited), have a drastically differet tileset from the well done one they are currently using. I believe that there's even a post somewhere in the thread showing a procession of the improving game screenies, as per an earlier request of mine.

I am a beginner spriter and i am making a pokemon game.
I was wondering how you make the sprites backgrounds transparent like that...
In the game, When i put the sprites I make into it, they appear all white and blocky in the game(in the background of the sprite)... How do you guys make it so that you see them just normal?
(sorry if I don't put much detail into my problem)

Question #2:with FlameGuru's starter kit, How do you make it so that a trainer battles you on the spot rather that having to see you(and have that exclamation mark appear above their head)?

You need to make it with paint!
then save it in the picture map !

Change the name of the event from trainer(x)(x=number of steps it can see you from)
to anything else but trainer(x)
and change the event touch to action button

oh and to your first question
if you make a sprite then import it using the "materials" button and then import your sprite
then you'll see your picture and under it 2 color blocks with transparent color (L-click) and semi-trasparent color (R-click)
click both left and right mouse button on the back ground of you sprite and then just click ok!
(if you don't undertand it pm me)
and then you need to talk to the trainer for a battle to start!

Actually, that's for poccil's kit, not Flameguru's.

But then, you shouldn't be using Flameguru's anyway - poccil's is an improved version. Unless the person who asked meant poccil's kit?

for the transparent backgrounds, it's actually really easy, all you need to do is take the sprite, and put it somewhere you can easily find it (i usually just do the desk top) them, color the whole background one color, a color that is not in the sprite, then, go to the rmxp editor, click on tools, then on materialbase, then click on what kind of sprite it is (if it's an over world sprite (the kind that walk around) then choose character) then, click "import" and then find the file, when you find it, you will be given the option of what color to make invisable, and what color to make translusent, just chooce them (if you don't want a translucent color, then choose the same one as the invicable color)

and there you go, the background is invisable.

for the second question, i am going to asume you mean you want the player to talk to them, and then they battler, just set an event , and put the triger to action button. that should do it.

Do that using switches.

Half way through the chat or where you want the rival to come in, go to the event Control switches and turn a switch on.

Set the rivals event at the door or something and change the condition to the switch you set up. You will also probably need to do Set move route and set it up so he walks up towards you and the Prof.

Then click Wait for Move completion, and then setup the battle script.

Hi everyone!

I need some help with trainer battles. I got it to work and all, and even the custom Pokemon and trainer sprites work properly. But I keep getting this error when battling a trainer. I think it has something to do with a script error making the trainer clueless on what to do next, the result -> it won't do anything at all. This is the error:

first you need Gamemaker, RPGMaker, Flash or some other program. Flash is $800, Gamemaker is free but limited, and is like a free trail, and RPGmaker XP has a free version you can get on Download.com.

ok i still am having a problem with creating a working gym leader using Flameguru's Starter Kit how do i make it so the gym leader gives the badge if the person wins

Hm,
I'am new to game making, and I wanted to start making a Pokemon Game, does anyone have tutorials for real beginners - ground up. I plan to use RPG Maker 2003.

Edit: Done, I've found out RM2K3 is very simple to use, Still I need some help on:

1) I implemented my own Day/Nite system, the problem is the effect happens everywhere..But I want it to only happen outdoors. Any ideas?
2) Need help on implementing a Pokemon Battle system.

Have it run on a switch. Call the switch something like "Outside."
When you go into a house, turn the switch off and tint the screen back up to 100, then when you leave the house, just turn back on the switch and call your tint.

What sound? As far as I'm aware, it's BGM sound and not an actually sound effect. so when the trainer spots you, the music changes to the song. I remember someone posted the D/P music files (I think its still in the resource thread). The file for- lets say- when a boy trainer spots you is called "Eye_Boy" lol.

Not that, I mean there's just this tiny little sound that is made when the mark appears over the person's head when they see youm no music or anything. I guess you could call it a sound effect.

Mother of all stupid questions time...here we go!

I recently saw a post in the Roleplay section to the effect that learning moves in D/P is different from in previous games. Could someone direct me to information on what's new and different in the DS generation? I only have a GBA-SP, and have only played the games prior to Diamond and Pearl.

I'm not sure wether this will get filled or not, but I'm asking here instead of the Essential's topic.

Can anyone create, or at least provide initial samples of attack animations for the PE kit? I can't figure out the in-game editor at all, plus I've never been good with creating animations anyway.
So I'm asking if someone can create battle animations to match the GBA game attacks, and provide so everyone can see it and learn from it how to use the editor?

hey is there a tool to extract 3d models from wii .iso's (SSBB, PBR) and put them into .3ds format?? i know it's possible but i don't know how to do it.

Go into the script editor, press Ctrl+Shift+F, and type what text you want to replace.

Then replace the selected text with what you want.

Does anyone have a character set of Ash Ketchum for RPG Maker XP? That I could use for my game?

Also one more thing, is it possible to set up a service on RPG Maker XP, like uh for example a nintendo wii has..like a friend code thing..like okay for my game I want to be able to have real friends that play the game aswell and they like exchange friend codes so ingame they can send eachother emails and stuff.

Hey guy's, i havn't posted it yet but im busy working on my new Pokemon game, now i have designed a number of Towns and Citys for my game but im having some trouble coming up with names for them, what i want to know it what do you do when naming a city, do you just name it after somthing significant in your town, or just the first name that pops in your head or what?

Please note i don't want help with name as i want to think of them myself im just a little stuck at the moment but if i can get a good way of choosing names i shoud be fine and maybe even be able to post my game up in the main showcase section of the board, with in the next week or so.

Alright now. Yeah, you can do it in both ways.
The first way is 'name it after somthing significant in your town'
Example: You town is planted lots of flower, so you can try to name your town with a "FL" in front, like 'Flacess Town'...

The second way is just a name that is nice to hear.
Example: A big city where your 8th gym located. The name should be really powerful like Gospel City, Rexgrip City or else. ( Just a name pops in your head )

I am a little weird when I name my towns, I get them exactly how I want them then I look at the whole town. Whatever pops into my head is the name I choose. I have one game that I have named all of the town, maybe temporarily, after the towns surrounding where I live. I've considered actually picking a place, not in Japan, and creating a map like that.

As is stated in the first post of this thread, this is NOT a request thread. Try things out, look around, and get used to what you're doing. Also, have a look at the tutorials section, as well as the resources thread.

Actually, you can make requests within a certain limit.

Try downloading Poccil's Pokemon Essentials, reading the instructions, and then setting up a trainer using the appropriate text file. That's if I interpreted your request right...

The game lags with larger maps, I've asked at rmxp.org(they never checked the demo><) It's the tile-class rewrite script that is causing lag with large maps.

Hopefully someone can fix this!

i think its in the pokemon starter kit -_-, because i didnt really do anything except add a few events (text box onces/npc/quest/transportation from one lvl to the next) and i made maps.

Did you set your starting position right at the house? Because in the starting intro it initializes your character and stuff. So its probably because you have no character defined...You can go through the whole intro or find a way around it. Tbh i dont really know. sorry =\

I think you made a mistake in the boy/girl choosing. After that there should be a step that teleports you. You also need to change your person or define the character set.

What you have done is change the starting position of the game. Put it back on the intro map. That map has an event that is the opening of the game. At the end of the event you need to have it teleport the player to your starting map.

Since all of the good Pixel-Movement scripts are disappearing from RMXP sites I'm just wondering if you have scripts like this.

Try RMXP.org. Someone named along the lines of f0tz!barchen has created a pixel movement script that works for hero and events. It's rather complicated though.

I Have a few of questions regarding a game me and my friend are making.
So please bear with me...(We are using RMXP)


1. We have the Gym Leader put in and the battle for him, but whats the script/event code for obtaining the badge? Sorry if I phrased this in a complicated manner.

2.This might have to tie in with the first question, but how do activate the event/script for using HM's after you've beaten the first gym leaders.

3.Does anyone know a good sprite editor? And a way to make Sprites bigger?(Like the ones off of Spriters-Resource)

4.How do you make it look like lights are on in a building during night?

5.How do you make it so enviroment music seperates from battle music.(Ex.Walking in a route and when you enter a battle the route music plays.)

Considering the fact that it still takes serious hacking skills to extract 3D models from N64 games, and that there are STILL no real tools for doing that, you're probably out of luck if you want to do that with the Wii.

I have the answers to your questions. For the black you must have 7 tiles to the left and right and 5 tiles to the top and bottom in order to not see the black. As for the day night system, I am guessing you are using Essentials. You need to either use the editor or from the playtest use F9 to access the editor. There you can go into the Visual Editor while on the map you want to have the day night system and double click it. Setting the Outdoor setting to true enables the Day night system. You should be able to get this information in the Notes provided with Essentials.

Beginning towns are usually dealing with plants/trees (Ex: New Bark and Littleroot).

For the rest, just think of appealing names that are creative and fit the town itself.

Oooh, cool thread!

While those are all good ways to name areas, you can also use the nifty translator~ Just type in something that the town has, translate it in the prefered language, and boom! you've got a nifty name!

Because my own game originally expanded with the Portuguese influence, quite a few of the town/city names are actually Portuguese, Example is Friagua City, Maresia City, etc, etc. (No, I'm not Portuguese.)

Hi all, I seem to have a small problem with my Bird's Eye View game in Game Maker 7. Let me first tell you what my game is about. The main character so far is a brown sphere and the walls are just a recolor of the original wall sprites but this is just in it's beta stages. There is a crosshair, or aimer, where the mouse is to aim with when shooting a things.
Now, here is my problem; I have created an object called obj_control which, when placed in the room, creates a black background on a portion of the screen and creates health bars on top of it to create the effect of a HUD screen. Here's some screenshots so you can get a better idea of what's wrong.

My advice is to pick a theme, like all of the actual games. For example, R/B/Y's cities were all named after colors. The next gen was mostly flowers or trees. So, choose some unifying theme and name your cities accordingly, maybe?

Well, I would never recommend Game maker, as it wars with the operating system for processing power. That aside, I believe that you have your Z coordinates wrong if you want it in front. You have to have the z coordinates higher to make it in front, and lower to put it behind. (in GM's scriping language, its called z coordinates, but I don't remember what it was called in the main portion of the program) It should be in your object properties.

Well it looks okay so far. If you want to make a Pokemon game then find a program called RPG Maker XP. download it, look around for tutorials and the Pokemon Starter Kit, some people are helping me with that now. I'm still beginning with it. :P

Well, for obtaining badges, you could have it to where the badges are like items and you could put a conditional statement on the HM you want to use, for example, let's say you need the third badge to cut down trees. Have the cuttable trees as an object, and use that conditional statment in the event. Ex:
Conditional Statement: if you have 3rd badge
show text: This tree looks like it could be cut down!
Use cut?
show choices: Yes, No
if Yes:
Erase event
if No:
Else
show text: This tree looks like it could be cut down!

Now, this is not exactly how it should look, but it should give you an idea of how it should work.

Now for the background music, remember that going to box that lets you change that should help you fix that problem, not the eventing box, but the one on the toolbar.

I have got to tell you, this may be difficult. If you set up an event to change graphic at a certian time you could acomplish this.

Now for the sprite editors, I draw a blank. (no pun intended) You see, I suck at editing sprites, so you may want to ask someone else, because I realize paint is not the way to go... but I don't know what is.

i am making a pokemon game in rpg xp.
i want to know what i did wrong

(no animation for my doors at current moment)

i went to were i want the player to be transported, (on event layer) clicked "add event" went to the second page of events, and clicked "transfer player", then i clicked on the down tab in the new window that poped open, clicked my posistion, (bed room to living room) and then clicked ok, hten apply, then ok.

when i test my game, all it does when i go to the space, is have me stand there, i can move, and everything, but it doesnt tranfer me anywhere? please help me, also if this doesnt fit here move it under pocills poke esentials thread ;|

The problem wasn't the oprion or the saving. It was the fact that he put it on the second page and set it to run when the player pressed the action button. Oh, and you are using an illegal copy of rmxp.

This isn't a major issue, but, for my new project I am creating the region map, and I want to use the D/P template. My questions are: does this template exist and do you have this template? If there is no template, I'm sure I could make one myself though I'd prefer to use one made by someone who knows what they're doing.

Okay, so, I am using the Pokémon Essentials starter kit, and I am thinking of creating multiple regions for my game...to do that, though, I need more then 8 badges. Is there a way I can set it up so that, when you enter a new region, your trainer card displays a certain set of badges? (i.e. badges 1-8 in Kanto, 9-16 in Johto, 17-24 in Hoenn, etc.)

Also, Luke128, download the Pokemon Essentials starter kit. It has everything Hoenn.

Oh my god... Rpg Maker XP is an RPG maker(duh. Hence the name). It is a program that lets you create RPGs. And if you don't know what that is, an RPG is called a Role-Playing Game. It's where you play as a protagonist(hero) and do...whatever. In this case it's about Pokemon. Do you get my drift?

Well, you can buy RMXP for 60 bucks. But RM2K3 is free, but it is not as good as RMXP, plus they've got the starter kit for RMXP. And I don't think there is one for RM2K3...

google for it. but I am going to have to say, that unless you can program in the language that RM2K3 uses, it will be pointless for you to download. You can learn to program in its language, but I do not think a Pokemon game would be the greatest game to begin with.

I don't think you can, you might as well just use something like paint and simply move what you want into the other tileset.

Is there even a limit to how long a tileset can be? It would be much easier to just cut/paste two tilesets together.

1.Delete all maps except intro..then right click and go to new map...
2.To add A tileset upload the tileset to Graphics/tilesets then go to database in rmxp and click tilesets,go down to change maximum and add 1 to the umber shown..

well when you import it to the database make sure that you click its backround so that the game knows not to show it while your playing.

I am using the starter kit from Poccli and I am at a roadblock with my programming, ya see, I have up to the point where you select your first pokemon, and I do not know how to make your rival pick the stronger pokemon, and your friend pick the weaker pokemon. Im working on a pokemon game and i have drawn up a new Pokemon and scanned it to the pc. i have tried a colouring it but one body part e.g wings took me ages to do because the outline of the pokemon has other colours and lines that u see wen u zoom in. Does anyone know a good program to use to do these or has a GOOD tutorial for it?

Hello all, I'm working on a GameMaker8 game where you go around in Birds-Eye view shooting at opponents. I'm trying to make my enemies intelligent but they seem to be refusing to learn. xD

I'd simply like to know how to script in a new species. Would it be as simple as creating sprites, placing them in the data folder with each sprite listed as: 001, 001s, 001b, 001bs (the name of the folder escapes me) etc. and then changing a script event to...

say if i made a new sprite, and then made and event listed as pbAddPokemon(X,Y) to add the new species to my party, with X being 494, would that work? or am i missing something in the scripting entirely?

Is this even possible to do? And if not, is there any way to modify currently exisiting species to make the desired effect i have listed above?

I have decided to work on a Pokemon game and I downloaded Pokemon Essentials yesterday and spent a good few hours skimming through it to better understand. The one thing that I was looking for though is,
when you make the character SURF or ride a BIKE, or other stuff, is there a way to script in a sprite change when they mount the pokemon or bike, and then change back again when they dismount?
I can't figure out how to do that. Thank you!

It's built in, go to the PBS/metadata.txt file and edit it following the instructions in the file itself.

I think I might want to make an RPG. I was hoping to make it 3d at least PSX graphics if I did, but I didnt want to buy anything. So I decided I would settle for 2d. I have the basic plot down, I don't have a title, and I am prepared to spend up to a year on it. I don't know what free program I should use. Any ideas? Questions?

i believe this is answering my question. thank you, i tried messing with just the txt file but obviously with no sprites trying to add 494 to my party caused an error, but i'll try this and see how it works.


i also want to thank whoever mods this forum that moved my topic here.

EDIT: Thanks! It works. I didn't have any sprites avaliable so i just did a blue colored goldeen, but it came out fine. I can't wait to get my game underway now. I didn't test any of the TM's to see if it works, but i assume they do since there were not errors when starting it up.

Do you have a legal copy of RPG Maker XP? If you do then you shouldn't have this problem...

I've been Googling away for a long while trying to find a Pokemon battle system tutorial for Sphere, but I can't seem to locate one.........

I'm certain I can figure out how to do other stuff with the scripting, but as far as JavaScripting a Pokemon battle system, nothing.

I've heard it's not too difficult to pull off one once you figure it out, but I'm still a bit of a noob to this, and would be unlikely to figure out how to do it from scratch.

Whenever I open up XP it says Failed to obtain a trial serial number from the nTitles server and then it closes out of XP.

I have looked around but haven't been able to find any RM2k3 starter kits. Only XP. Anybody know of an RM2k3 starter kit or an RMXP starter kit that works for 03?

of a pretty good 8-way movement script,
but the game is only using the same spriteset.
(When I move upper left, the up sprite is shown etc.)
I wonder if there's a way to add new sprites
to the spritesheet, for "Diagonally sprites"...

I kept getting Unsupported PNG image every time I tried to import sprites. My friend told me that it probably has too many colors and that I should use Photoshop to give it the right format. He then logged off, unfortunately.

So anyway, I am using Photoshop CS3 but I cannot find out how to give it the right amount of colors.

Can someone who knows how to do this, please help me?

I used pokepic to dump the images of the ruby title as gba files and edited them in tile molester. now i want to see how they look but i dont know how to import them back in the rom.

Can I ask techinical questions here about uploading my game on to websites and stuff?

If so, may i enquire into how I do this. I've tried uploading the game .exe file onto upload sites and it works but when people try to play it, nothing happens. Do I have to upload the other files with it? And does it have to be saved as a .rar file, if so how do i go about that?

one thing i can never quite understand is how to replace the trainer with pokemon when a battle starts. i was using various starter kits and i go into the actors database and there are no pokemon, neither are there stats, attacks or anything. i breifly looked into the code, but searching through hundreds of lines of words that make no sense to me gives me a headache.

i plan on learning how to code in the near future but intill then can some one explain how it works or link me to somewhere that can tell me.

I need some help with terrain. Some of the black tiles outside of the players room allow you to step on them. How do I fix this. I've checked the Terrain tags and it still does not work.

I also need help with title screens. How do you animate them?

Finally can someone make a script for me that is the one in Pokemon Yellow how Pro. Oak stops you in the grass and battles Pikachu and then you get it in the lab? Thanks.^^

Um, I need help resizing an OW sprite. How do you do it without completely ruining the look of it?

Also, I am looking for a desert tileset and a farm tileset, if anyone happens to have these, and wouldn't mind giving me them, it would be much appreciated.

Lastly, if anyone has a front Wes sprite, a front Rui sprite and some back Rui sprites, that I could have, that would be great. (Wes and Rui are the heros of Pokemon Colosseum, btw.)

I'm using Pokemon Essentials and I'm wondering how to add a rival and the code so that the rival appears when you put it in. Code Example: \PN will put the Players Name where you put it there so what is the one where you can get the Rivals Name to appear.
