I got a traded Turtwig and Piplup at the beggining of the game. Now they won't obey me, and I'm only past the first gym. What shall I do? I'm not so sure how to increase happiness, really.
Theres nothing you can do about happiness,
even if they are uber liking you, you need gym badges to make them obey.

Yeah, once you retrieve the second badge, every pokemon up to lvl 30 shall obey you,
then after that it is every other badge until at the 8th badge, everything obeys u
30 - 2nd badge
50 - 4th badge
70 - 6th badge
100 - 8th badge
