is there a way to send mail to another person without having to trade the pokemon holding it?

Nope, I don't think so. If you need to just slap it on a random Poke you aren't going to miss, such as a Bidoof.

As far as I know... No other way possible... ;)
But hey, don't pity on poor Bidoofs and Zigzagoons... At least, they're useful even if it's not for battling :P :D

HM slaves too, don't forget. And for Zigzagoon... Linoone has a spot on my party at times as a Pick-up Poke. :)
IMO mail isn't that great... chances are you already know the person, or you'll talk to them over forums anyway. And if it's with someone on GTS... not much point. Unless you want to taunt someone by trading them a hacked Pokemon, and telling them so in the mail...
