I beat Whitney and got the HM from this guy. So I gave it to a couple of my Pokemon, and when I wanted one to lift a boulder, i did START-POKEMON-EXGEGGCUTE-STRENGTH. All I got was ''Exeggcute used strength! Exeggcute can lift boulders.'' What does this mean? Now I'm trapped. Also would like to know about the big ''ditch'' (?) at the Ecruteak gym.

Okay.
1) After you do that, you can just move your character up to the boulder and move it.
2) Since it is a ghost gym, they made it so you have to move your way through carefully, or you'll be sent back to the beginning. I think this is the path:
By the first trainer, move 3 steps to the right so you're a couple paces under the next trainer. Then, go up until you meet the next trainer. Then go 4 steps left for another trainer. Then, go up for another one. Then, go right for another trainer. Go up for another, and then, go left until you are infront of someone on land. Then go up to him, and get ready to face the Ecruteak Gym Leader.
