Summer Break--Pokemon Style
All eyes were turned towards the clock on the wall as the last seconds of the last day were ticked down. "FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE!!" the apprentices chanted. The bell didn't ring when they reached one, but nobody cared. The Pokemon ran for the ladder with cries of, SUMMER!!" "Sit back down, the bell did not ring yet!" Chatot cried in vain. Everyone stopped and waited exactly five more seconds. Just then, the bell rang, a deep, gong-like sound. "It did now, yup-yup!" piped up Bidoof as the guild members scattered up the ladders. "Well, we can't exactly stop them, can we, Guildmaster?" Chatot sighed. "Their guild training is done for the summer." "Why would you want to stop them?" Wigglytuff asked indignantly. "Summer's here! We should celebrate!"
The guild members burst out into the bright sunlight and shot down the stairs hewn into the cliffside. No one stopped running until they reached the center of Treasure Town. "Okay, so now that we're free, what should we do now?" asked Marina, a Piplup, and the leader of Team Mystify. "We could go down to the beach and go swimming, but only if you guys want to." "Of course they want to," her partner Blaze, a Chimchar, assured her. "This is the hottest day Treasure Town has ever seen!" "It definitely is," Chimecho agreed. "Let's go!" No one had any complaints, so the Pokemon started off at a run down the path to the beach.
Once they had reached the beach, everyone splashed into the water, even Blaze, who was a fire-type. It was pleasantly cool after the hot sunlight that always streamed into the guild. It was only then that the trouble began. Blaze hurried out of the water, scrambled up a palm tree, and used it as a sort of catapult to launch himself into the air. He landed on top of Loudred, pinning him under the water. "Ha! What now, Loudred? Can't yell at me from here, can you!" Blaze mocked. Loudred, however, ignored this. He jumped up, hurled Blaze off, and yelled, "I CAN YELL AT YOU ANYTIME AND ANYWHERE, BLAZE, SO YOU'D BETTER WATCH OUT!" "Eek! Loudred! Sunflora cried, covering her ears. "Don't do that!"
After the catapult fiasco, nobody really wanted to hear Loudred yell again. Marina and Corphish, who was a very fast swimmer, had swimming races to see who was faster. As it turned out, Marina beat Corphish every time. It might have been her sleek fins that helped her win, or just the fact that she was at level 72; she didn't really know. Corphish didn't, either. "Hey, hey, hey! You must have cheated, Marina!" he shrieked after being beaten for the fifth time in a row. "Nobody can beat me by that much!" "I don't cheat, Corphish," Marina said, smiling. "I'm just naturally faster than you."
Corphish and Marina had a few more races, and Corphish did actually win once, but only because Marina took pity on him and let him win. She avoided telling him this, as he was so busy celebrating his "victory". Later, after everyone had been swimming for a while and Dugtrio and Diglett and built a spectcular sand fort, everyone was starting to get tired. It was only then that a voice from the cliffs above yelled, "CANNONBALL!!" followed by a cry of, "GUILDMASTER! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" The next second, Wigglytuff landed with a tremendous splash in the water. He was soon joined by Chatot, who was clearly distressed. "Guildmaster, you're supposed to set an example for your apprentices!" he scolded. "Aw, who needs examples?" Wigglytuff laughed, splashing Chatot in the face. Chatot dropped his dignified manner instantly. "Oh, you want to play hardball, do you?" he said slyly, splashing Wigglytuff back. The whole thing was rounded off with a huge splash fight in which everyone got very wet and Diglett and Dugtrio's castle of a sand fort was destroyed. Marina took this as a good time to announce a new activity before fighting could break out.
"Why don't we go to the Sky Stairs and see if Rayquaza's up for a game of sky volleyball?" Marina suggested nervously, seeing Dugtrio throw Wigglytuff a very nasty look that said, "You started it!" "Are you KIDDING?!" Loudred cried. "The Sky Stairs has, like, 50 FLOORS!" "We won't have to fight through all 50 if we take a Dimensional Hole," Marina said with a grin. "But you can't just open one of those," said Sunflora truthfully. "Nope, but I know someone who can," Marina replied, whistling loudly. The next second, Dialga landed lightly on the sand. "You called, Mistress Marina?" he said politely. "Yes, I did. Take us to the top of the Sky Stairs, please," Marina requested. "I can take you as far as Rayquaza's security device allows," Dialga explained. "That's located right at the top, but you won't get any farther unless you give some kind of password." "We'll figure that out when we get there," said Diglett. "We have Chatot and Wigglytuff with us, after all."
Dialga nodded and gave an almighty roar, opening a swirling black-and-purple portal in the air. "I'll come through with you just to make sure you end up in the right place," he said. "Remember, when using a Dimensional Hole, don't move. Just let it do the moving for you. If you do move, well, the conseqences may be very nasty. All right, ready? Set? Go!" Everyone jumped into the Dimensional Hole. Once inside, everyone became very still, just as Dialga had instructed. It was a wild ride through a bright blue tunnel, and when they finally reached the Sky Stairs, everyone tumbled out onto a platform of clouds. "Never again..." Dugtrio moaned. "That was the craziest thing I have ever done in my life!" It was only then that Dialga noticed the small black box mounted on a cloud pillar.
"That's what I was telling you about," he said quietly. "Don't make any sudden moves and don't speak until it speaks to you." The box promptly spoke in a cool male voice, "Welcome to the Sky Stairs, domain of Rayquaza. If you wish to proceed, state your name and business. Then, provide the correct password." Chatot stepped forward and glared at the box suspiciously. "Why should we tell you why we're here?" he asked. As soon as he said this, everyone knew he had made a mistake. The male voice, no longer cool and calm, called in a voice to rival Loudred's, "ACCESS DENIED! ACCESS DENIED!" "Smooth move, Chatot!" Marina cried over the noise. "You really made it mad now!" Just then, the cloud platform on which they were standing began to tremble violetnly.
"Looks like you triggered some kind of trap!" Blaze shouted as the box continued to blare, "ACCESS DENIED! ACCESS DENIED! ACCESS DENIED!" Blaze then made the unlucky mistake of looking over the edge of the tower. "Oh, boy, I wish I hadn't done that!" he said, slapping a hand over his eyes. "Considering how bad this tower's shaking, I say we could all fall off and plunge to our deaths any second now." It was then that an even louder voice bellowed, "WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP?!" Rayquaza himself landed on the platform in front of the Pokemon. "TEAM MYSTIFY IS WITH THEM, AND THEY ARE MY GUESTS! IS THAT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU?!" "Thank you," said the male voice coolly. The tremors abruptly stopped, and Blaze promptly fell over. "Sorry about that," said Rayquaza. "Ah, Team Mystify, it's been a while. I will never forget the battle you gave me when you came up here on a Wonder Mail mission. That was truly epic, you two. Marina, that was one strong Blizzard you used then."
"We were just wondering if you wanted to play sky volleyball with us," Marina asked. "I am always up for a game," Rayquaza said jovially. "Dialga, my friend, you are welcome to stay and join us. So, Marina and Blaze, are your guild friends any good?" "Oh, well, we've never actually seen them play, but they sure do love to have fun," said Blaze. "That's all that matters, then!" Rayquaza boomed. "Let's get started!" He led the Pokemon out onto the middle of the cloud platform where a net was set up. A volleyball dropped down out of nowhere and landed in front of Rayquaza. "Okay, let's pick teams, here... Diglett, Dugtrio, you're commentating... and as for the rest of us..." Marina began. "How about we take Dialga, Chimecho, Chatot, Loudred, Sunflora, and Croagunk for one team and Rayquaza, Bidoof, Wigglytuff, Corphish, Blaze, and I for the other?" "Sounds good to me!" Wigglytuff agreed happily. "As long as that's decided, let's play!" Rayquaza cried, slapping the ball into play with his tail.
Dialga's team, Team TimeWarrior, scored an early point when Dialga whacked the ball hard over the net with his tail. Bidoof made to jump up and headbutt it, but it sailed clean over his head and landed behind him. Marina's team, Team Unity, decided it was time for revenge. Blaze, using his amazing agility, dove under the ball and countered a serve that would have otherwise scored a point. The ball sailed back over the heads of Dialga's team and landed behind them, scoring a point for Team Unity. As the game progressed, Team Unity fell back 10-12, and they were only playing to fifteen. Then Chatot scored a spectacular point with his wing, making it 10-13. It looked like it was pretty much over for Team Unity. Then, as Team TimeWarrior's serve sailed over the net, Rayquaza whacked the ball clean off the tower with his tail. "Oh, no! It's one of Rayquaza's trademark Sky Balls!" Dugtrio announced excitedly. "I think that one put a hole in the ozone!" Diglett cried. "But will it give Team Unity the point they need to make a comeback? We'll see if the ball ever comes down!" It did come down two seconds later. It didn't stop there, either. It crashed down through 50 layers of clouds and somehow landed in the Hot Spring far below. Torkoal, surprised by the ball that had suddenly landed in the water, cried, "What are ya doing up there?!" A Teddiursa that was relaxing in the water came up to Torkoal and placed the ball on his shell. Torkoal blew a jet of steam out of it, and the ball shot back up through the hole it had made in the clouds and came to rest at Dialga's feet.
"Umm...well, that's not out of bounds... It never crossed the line, anyway..." said Diglett uncertainly. "I think that's a point! It's 11-13, and Team TimeWarrior is still in the lead!" Meanwhile, Dugtrio didn't seem ti have heard a word of this. "That was THE most spectacular serve I've ever seen!" he cried. "Rayquaza, well done!" Rayquaza nodded politely and the game resumed.
Team Unity got in a few well-place points by Bidoof, who finally perfected his hedbutting techinque. Eventually, they made the score 14-13, and both teams were itching to win. Then, as Croagunk slapped the ball over the net towards Marina, she raised her fin and slapped right back. Sunflora hit it rather clumsily, and Chimecho was there instantly to help her recover. Chimecho's hit sailed right back towards Marina. Knowing that this would be the game-winning point if she made it, she slapped the ball as hard as she could. The ball seemed to move in slow motion as it passed all of Team TimeWarrior's members and landed right behind Chatot, who covered his head with his wings and cried, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I hate when volleyballs come flying at me like that!" "It's okay," said Sunflora. "That was the most fun I've had playing volleyball since...since...well, I don't even know!" "It surely was, yup-yup!" Bidoof agreed. "Congratulations, my friend," said Dialga politely to Rayquaza. "You nearly beat us," Rayquaza admitted. "Good game." "And it's a final score of 15-13 to Team Unity!" Dugtrio shouted. "Great game, everyone! Great game!"
Rayquaza gladly opened a Dimensional Hole for everyone just as Dialga had done. While the guild members got in, Dialga darted off for Temporal Tower and Rayquaza flew out into the open sky, calling, "Thanks for coming, everyone! Come back anytime!" With that, everyone hopped into the Dimensional Hole and sped off for Treasure Town to find that the sun was setting. "Aww, today was so fun, and now it's over," Wigglytuff sighed. "What are you talking about?" asked Chatot mysteriously. "We still have one more thing to do!" No one knew what this was, so they let Chatot lead them out to Sharpedo Bluff. "Everyone, we are about to witness a rare event; so rare, in fact, that it only occurs once every 1,000 years," Chatot announced. Everyone turned their eyes to the sky as the sun sank below the horizon. Darkness blanketed the bluff for a few seconds. Then, two clouds parted to reveal a beautiful shining curve of light in the sky. "That's...the Milennuium Comet!" Marina cried, realizing what it was. "Once evey 1,000 years...we're so lucky," murmured Chimecho. "Yeah, and now, it'll be here for a week," Loudred reminded everyone. "We can come out here every day and see it." As soon as he had said this, fireworks exploded around the comet, and the song, "Make A Wish" was played out of nowhere. In that moment, Marina knew that the song was being heard all over the world as Pokemon everywhere viewed the comet. And in that moment everyone everywhere was united.

Over the summer, the guild's members did everything they could to make sure that this would be a summer they would never forget. This included many more volleyball games with Rayquaza, an all-out war between Dialga and Palkia (in which no one could resist taking sides), and a party at Temporal Tower, which resulted in a huge disaster when Bidoof "accidentally" dropped a water balloon on a Salamence. Of course, everyone viewed the Milennium Comet whenever they could for a week, and they were all very sad when it was gone. One of the best times of the summer was on the 4th of July, when everyone launched fireworks off the top of the Sky Stairs. Rayquaza had no objection to this, and even contributed to the celebration using his own Hyper Beam.
Overall, it was, as everyone had planned, the best summer of their lives, and they were looking forward to many more summers just like this one. For now, though, it was back to training at the guild, which, in itself, brought many adventures as good as the ones that everyone had had over the summer.
