(So... this idea is unfolding as I write... so it might not be so good. I know I shouldn't be discouraging you to read my own work... but eh. oh well.)

Prologue:

"You've got to be kidding me. This is the kind of stuff you read stories about, or you see in movies. This is NOT real."
Tavian watched the swirling orb as it floated roughly an inch off of the roughly-hewn tabletop. In her gut, she felt something apocalyptic was about to happen.
"It seems real to me. Eh, oh well," Derrik breathed. His chair groaned a bit as he leaned further back, indifferent of the situation.
"For God's sake Derrik, this is serious. Something bad is about to happen. Can't you feel it?"
"Can't say I do." Rising, he swaggered up to Tavian and dropped his hand onto her shoulder. "C'mon Tavvy, we do this all the time. How many times do you think we've run into giant monsters, bad guys, magical artifacts and all of that?"
"First, don't call me Tavvy. I tell you this every day. Secondly, it's never beent his bad. We're supposed to be in the real world now. We don't have incredible powers, we don't have amazing weapons, we're completely screwed! When something like this happens in the real world, people die. People like us die." She waved him off. "It doesn't matter. I'm getting out of here."

Chapter 1: (part 1)
The whole vehicle thrummed when she turned the key. Tavian could hear the familiar whine from the engine and knew she didn't have long. She shifted gears and pulled away from the lab.
There's no way this can be happening again. I thought we got out of this. The Professor told us that the gap between our world and theirs was going to close when he went through.
She didn't have to turn off the car. It died fortunately in the drive of her home in moderate suburbia. She found her door unlocked and Derrik in the kitchen. He has brought the orb.
"What the HELL Derrik? Why did you bring that here? What made you think it was safe to touch?"
"Tavvy, cool it. Rufus was talking to me."
"Rufus? What the- you named it? What's wrong with you?"
"I didn't name him. He-"
"HIM? Oh great. Now it's a HIM, not an it. What's going on?"
"Tavvy, listen to me damnit! You spent so much time freaking out about it, you didn't try to see what it is. It's a communication device that creates the gateway for cross-dimensional telepathy."
"Wh... What?"
"Rufus is an executive at Ghrey Corp. and they need us back over there."
"I thought the portal was-"
"It is. and that's the problem."
"So how do we-"
"I don't know. That's what we're working on."
Tavian stared into the frosty globe, oblivious that she was really seeing an office on the other side with a bit of table, a board chair, and a back wall.
