Eh...Mew. Arceus is cool (heck, truth be told, I hacked to get one, but I made it an HM slave and then got irritated with its hacked-ness and released it), but Mew fulfills my likes more. Arceus comes in close though, with the ability to change its type. Its movepool isn't very large though, so Mew wins with that. :/
And cmon, when it's Shiny, its blue! And a nice shade of blue, at that. That's amazing right there. xD

I grew up with Pokémon, I started playing Pokémon when the original games were launched in Europe, am I the only one that has noticed a quality drop in Pokémon with the Hoenn region and forward? Especially with the legendaries. Maybe it's just me... exept I don't think that really.

Well, let's take a look at the two Pokémon, will we? Mew, a cute, small, pink Pokémon. It is liked by both males and females of the human race (which is a hard feat to accomplish for a Pokémon), it can learn every move in the game, it is a legendary Pokémon, it was the protagonist of the first Pokémon movie (which will always have a place in our hearts), it is officially unobtainable in the games but it can be obtained through a glitch known as the Mew Trick (though why it's known as that, I have no idea as you can encounter any Pokémon you want so long as you know how to do it properly), it's stats are okay and everybody loves its cry. Arceus, on the other hand, is a white dog with a gold plate around its body, it can turn itself into any type and it is regarded as the God of all Pokémon. I think it was too soon for a God of all Pokémon and I really think that Mew wins this. There was really no competition whatsoever. Mew was the original God of all Pokémon and for me, it'll always be my favourite out of the two, and maybe out of all of the Legendaries, because its era was an era where catching a Legendary was actually an accomplishment and Legendary Pokémon were few and far between.

Arceus, not being capable of learning any attack, can still learn quite a lot, and is supposedly stronger than Mew. It also can change types freely with different plates, and it's color and it's signature attack, Judgment, change as well. (Judgment changes to the same type as Arceus.)

Mew, on the other hand, CAN learn any attack. It makes a good HM slave, if ya ask me. =P
Nothing else is really that special about Mew, except the fact it's cute and the ancestor of all Pokemon.

Also, just a theory...but if Arceus created the universe...wouldn't that mean it created Mew as well...?

I personally prefer Arceus. In my opinion, Arceus is cooler and better of a Pokemon than Mew.

Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf created knowledge, emotion, and willpower. I'd say they, and maybe even Groudon and Kyogre, and maybe Jirachi, all came before Mew.

Also, your theory has a good chance of being correct as well.
Mew couldn't have been alive to be the REAL ancestor of all Pokemon. That would mean Arceus would have evolved from Mew, along with the whole universe itself...

But, I think you're right. Maybe Mew is recognized for being the ancestor of all Pokemon because it can learn any attack...

We really don't have a true answer unless Nintendo reveals it themselves.

Well I was only saying that Mew is the ancestor so I could write, "Who came first, the Arceus or the Mew?" You know, like the pokemon version of "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" It's one of those questions you can ponder endlessly without getting a real answer. Maybe that's what Nintendo wants us to do.

First I'd like to dispel a couple of things that constantly pop up in this kind of thread:

Wrong. Mew was never stated to be the god, whereas nintendo specifically call arceus the god on several occasions:
The pokemon that shaped the universe with it's 1000 arms
This pokemon was born before the universe even existed
At the heart of chaos, where all things became one, appeared an Egg
(A reference to arceus being born before the universe)

Also, arceus is classified as the alpha pokemon- Alpha means First
Mew is the ancestor pokemon- Ancestor means Distant Relative
It is therefore possible that mew is an old species of pokemon which all others are derived from, but he is most certainly not a god.

Next point:
"Arceus isnt a god, no god could be captured in a pokeball!"
-First off it's a children's game. I don't think Game Freak would be very responsible if the following popped up on the screen:
You found arceus!
Go Pikachu!
Arceus Smites you with divine powers!
You are dead, game over...
Whereas children will derive enjoyment from catching "The strongest pokemon ever". Its not about theology, it's marketing.
-Next, the arceus we catch is not the same form that created the entire universe. If you're a literal kinda guy, then the arceus that created the universe had many arms, where this one has none (Arceus can learn almost any move, but cannot learn anything that requires punching). Also, a god has to embody himself as something, so by becoming a pokemon he limits himself to that body's capabilities and requires plates to use different powers.
-Religiously, arceus loves all his creations and would rather submit to them rather than harm them, in a similar way to how jesus allowed himself to be incarcerated rather than go Godly on their roman asses- He has the power, he just doesnt use it.
-Finally, its a game and hardly possible for them to represent the divine scope of power a god could harness.

Now I've made my points, arceus gets my vote 'cause he's a llama :D

first, it was still a myth.
second, even if it did create the universe, that doesn't make it a god(or else it would have a religion).
it just makes it the creator of the universe.
third, it can't be the god pokemon because there ARE pokemon stronger than it.

I pick Mew. It's simple, refined, whereas Arceus is some ugly, mishapen... thing.
And I find the idea of capturing a god ridiculous (The fact that's for marketing doesn't make it any less so.). I mean come on, like some random ten year old kid is going to save the world, take on a huge group of criminals by themselves, and then capture god in a ball, and command it to battle. Wow. I think Pokemon went downhill after Gold/Silver, and almost every Pokemon after Celebi I consider ugly.

And yes, Arceus is stated as the Pokemon God. Alpha Pokemon (the first). Arceus basically created everything.

Anyways, I have a view on the Mew & Arceus debacle and I dislike what I've come out with, but it's a pretty reasonable explanation. Arceus was the overlord of the Pokémon world, it was the first Pokémon ever and it had the power to create an entity known as Mew. Mew came into the Pokémon world and gave life to every Pokémon there is. Some Pokémon were more important than others; Groudon was created and it made land while Kyogre was born and it caused water to rise. Meowth, on the other hand, was a Pokémon destined to roam the world in search of food.

Yeah, my view sort of resembles Christianity (which I don't really believe in and we won't be going into it in this thread) but without it or something similar to it, you get the Mew & Arceus debacle, where you argue forever as to who is the true Original One.

My favourite, however, is Mew. It was there first and it could learn every move in the game. Yeah, Arceus can change types but it usurped Mew's throne as the overlord of Pokémon for no real reason and isn't favoured by me at all thanks to that deed.

I'd have to say Mew. Not because it's from the original 151. It was not even catchable in the original games, unless you used the glitch.

I like it more because it looks kind. Arceus looks like hellspawn in my opinion, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Mew also can learn every move,and even though Arceus can change types, Mew is the only Pokemon besides Ditto who can learn Transform.

So, I'm not putting down Arceus, it is a great addition to any team, but I would choose Mew for the last spot in my party anyday.

2. That's false. Arceus created Palkia and Dialga, and in turn Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. They all came before Mew. This has been stated in the game. Most likely (though unconfirmed) Groudon and Kyogre both came before Mew as well.

No it cannot. The only change of movepool plates cause is that of draco meteor. Other than that, plates have no effect on what arceus can or cannot learn. He has no arms, and therefore cannot punch.

In reference to your earlier point, mew has the dna of every poke, that doesnt mean he created it. This reinforces the theory that mew was the first generic pokemon species from which all others evolved (Darwin-evolved, not pokemon-evolved), and is not a legend itself. I wrote the following passage last year:

Like i said, i go from the info we get from the games.
First came arceus
Arceus made D&P who made time and space, therefore the universe (Just a lump of dark matter at the current time)
Now Arceus had something to shove planets and stars and stuff into
Onto these planets he put more pokemon to regulate and shape them, in the case of earth;
Kyogre and groudon to form seas and landmasses
Regigigas to pull the continents into shape
The 3 Dogs to regulate fire water and thunder, and so on with all the aspects of the
planet.
At this point arceus would have either gone off and populated other planets (Depending on if he did earth first, last or whatever) or gone to sleep up at spear pillar. Alternatively he may have created these pokes from himself, therefore stripping him of lots of power, (reducing him from a god to merely godley) so he went to sleep at spear pillar to regenerate until he was strong enough to populate the next planet along.
Now for the less concrete theories
As for the more mundane pokemon, this is the evolution bit. The world was populated by mew, a whole species of them. This would explain why it contains every piece of dna, because all pokes originated from them. Some mews lived in the sea, and evolved into water types. Others lived in the desert and evolved into the grounds, and so on. Mews slowly died out apart from the one that is left, who has sustained by living in the forest of the sevii island he is found on.

Now, to explain why there is only one left. Mew is like a stem cell, all other pokemon formed from him. Since it would have been created by the god of pokemon, its biomolecular make-up to be close to perfect, so its body would be so efficient cells would be replicated as soon as they were destroyed, therefore mew would not age. the only way mew would die is of starvation, or by being eaten (Perfect cells leaves no room for mutation or disease). Some mews were herbivores, but those in the sparce deserts would be carnivores. If they migrated out of the deserts, they would see other veggie mews and eat them. This surviving mew had settled on an island in the sea (The sevii one), and because it is alone mew would eat little, and because it is surrounded by water the land would be fertile and mew would have an 'everlasting' food source, therefore allowing this mew to survive until 'present day'

So while this one merrily sat around and ate, the rest of the world was affected by darwin; Evolve or die. After millions of years any pokemon recognisable as mew had gone, leaving the one we play hide and seek with.
