Pokemon: Purple Sky
This project has been scrapped.
True to my nature, I've abandoned this project to work on another. I may or may not post a thread for this new project, but know this:
It is, in my opinion, already 10 times better than Purple Sky.
It is much more thought out, whereas Purple Sky was sort of a "spur of the moment" type thing.

Game Title: Pokemon: Purple Sky
Made With: RPG Maker XP, poccil's Pokemon Essentials
Recent Updates: Added map shot of Habidome Island.
Current Release: Beta v.01

Introduction
Hi there. You can call me Masquerade. I've been using RPG Maker for fun since RM2K. I've never completed a project. I've been rom-hacking for a couple years. I've never finished a hack. When I learned that Poccil's Pokemon Essentials was out, I decided to combine these two things into one and make a Pokemon game.

Pokemon: Purple Sky takes place about three years after R/B/Y. It assumes that G/S/C, R/S/E, and D/P/P do not exist, though Pokemon from all generations will be included.

The Story
Years ago, when Professor Oak still lived in Kanto, a boy from his native Pallet Town captured the legendary Clone Pokemon, Mewtwo. The boy brought the Pokemon to Professor Oak so that he could keep it from harming anyone.

The professor spent years studying Mewtwo. He did so in a humane way, building a large, natural structure and catering to all of the Pokemon's needs. Through his caring ways, he began to befriend Mewtwo. The Pokemon became more and more willing toallow Oak to perform tests on it. Then one morning, Professor Oak went down into the lab and discovered that Mewtwo had left without an explanation.

The professor searched for months, trying to track down the Pokemon. He used all of the knowledge he had compiled to predict Mewtwo's location based on its likes and dislikes. His data pointed him to the region of Kohku. Professor Oak gathered up all of his aspirations and moved to Cassava City in this region, where he is just beginning to settle in.

The professor needs aides to help him with his errands so he can concentrate on his search for Mewtwo, and you have lined up with many other hopefuls.

You are an only child from the sheltered Bitterleaf Town. Your parents were always very protective, never letting you venture outside of the town's borders. When you turned ten and all the other children began their journeys as Pokemon trainers, you were held back by your parents. To make up for the time lost in the field, you dedicated yourself to researching everything about Pokemon. Now, six years later, you hold a formidable amount of knowledge, and it is no surprise that you are Oak's top pick.

Don't expect to just be running errands all the time, however. This is, after all, a Pokemon game. You know you'll be entwined in evil plots, epic battles, and challenging puzzles.

The Corsairs
A new gang has formed in Kohku. They call themselves The Corsairs. Their founder, Artemis, witnessed the legendary Mewtwo streaking through the sky one night from her home. She was quite familiar with the story of Mewtwo's power, especially coming from her background in genetic engineering.

Artemis was a member of a study called "The Helix Project." The goal of the project was to combine DNA and create Pokemon that could perform well under any conditions. All the while, Artemis was running side projects of her own, attempting to create more powerful Pokemon. All of her projects failed, resulting in terrible fates for the Pokemon she tried to create.

Using her charm and intelligence, she gathered up many willing scientists from her old projects as well as grunts to form her gang. Artemis was lucky enough to recruit one of Oak's aides from Kanto, Gregor. Through Gregor, Artemis learned much of Professor Oak's studies, though Gregor knew no details, as Oak did all of his studies on Mewtwo alone.

The Corsairs' main goal is to track down Mewtwo and learn from its DNA. Their hope is to create a Pokemon as powerful as Mewtwo without the aggression so that they may use it for their own selfish gain. To do this, they'll need to acquire Professor Oak's research on Mewtwo so that they may discover the Pokemon's location. Perhaps they'll get some help from our old friends, Team Rocket...

The Region
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v103/roadkill856/mapinprogress-1.jpg
Welcome to Kohku, a region that is fairly average in terms of temperature. It rarely snows in here, and you'll only find tropical climates on the outlying islands. There is little fluctuation in climate across the region, though there are some areas that differ radically. These areas are cut off from the rest of the region by large, treacherous mountain ranges. They are unreachable by foot, but contain some of the rarest Pokemon in Kohku. The reason for Kohku's overall warm climate? You guessed it. Global warming. Pollution has caused Kohku's general temperature to increase dramatically in the last few centuries, resulting in several Pokemon changing to adapt.

Features
The standard stuff. You know, new region, new story.
A new hero, Crowe.
New ways of catching legendary Pokemon.
No Fakemon. - I know you've all seen games where their Fakemon looked absolutely dreadful. Well rest assured, Purple Sky will not be one of those games.
D/P Music - The beautifully orchestrated sounds of Diamond and Pearl will fill your ears as you play.
Gyms are no longer type-based. Instead, gym leaders use Pokemon of a specific color.
No more Elite Four! - Wait, what?!? That's right. The Pokemon League is actually a tournament now. There will be a number of trainers set for each round, and the game will randomly choose a trainer for you to battle each round!
Day-specific events - They're back! Some things can only be done on certain days of the week. Fire-type Fridays, anyone?
The Habidome - A large structure that mimics the habitats of certain Pokemon. The inside of the dome changes regularly, and with it, the Pokemon found inside it change as well. Some Pokemon can only be caught inside the dome, as their habitats do not naturally occur in Kohku.
Quickrail System - A over/underground train system that can take players to many major cities, as well as areas that are otherwise unreachable.
Changed Pokemon - Due to the changes in Kohku's climate, Pokemon had to adapt. The most obvious are color changes, but this could also mean possible type changes, stat changes, or any number of other things.
Custom Sprites - Not entirely custom, but some Pokemon will be re-sprited, others will feature revamps, such as the Blastoise shown in the Screenshots.
Proper Grammar - That's right, I know where periods go. You won't have to struggle to decipher the messages in my game.
The following is not guaranteed: It is possible that after completion of the main storyline in Kohku, additional areas will be added.

Applications
I don't need help with much, but there are a few things that would be very helpful to me. If you're interested in applying for a position, just PM me the following information:
Name:
Position:
Email:
Proof of Work:

Open Positions
Scripter - 3 Positions Open
I don't absolutely need any scripts right now, but it would be nice to have someone to go to when I need help.

Trainer Spriter - 3 Positions Open
I will need some custom trainer sprites for important NPCs, but I can always work my frankenspriting magic.

Overworld Spriter - 2 Positions Open
As is mentioned above, I will need overworld sprites for NPCs.

Pokemon Spriter - 3 Positions Open
I don't need any Fakemon, but I would like the D/P Pokemon re-sprited in GBA style. This just means smaller battlers and back sprites.

Current Release
Beta v.01! The very first release is now available for beta play.
This release includes 7 cities and 8 routes, including all areas in between. These maps are nearly complete with all events, though, of course, some things are subject to change.

Things that will definitely be changed before the final release:
Erica's Trainer Sprite
Add heroine
Make Artemis's sprites
More Pokemon recolored/resprited (This isn't a high priority at the moment.)
Other stuff I can't think of right now...

A note regarding this release:
At the beginning of the game, you will automatically start with the 8th badge. I have set this badge to allow you to use all HMs. Until I figure out how to make all HMs usable without badges, it will remain this way. Of course, once I add in the 8th gym, this will change.

Remember: If you don't have the RGSS102E.dll file in your System32 folder already, you need to put it there. It is included in the "Necessary Files" folder within the game folder.

Please report any and all errors and bugs to me ASAP so I can fix them and release the corrected beta.

Fangking Omega, for his set of sprites.
Avatar, for his set of sprites.
Inferno_Blaze, for contributing some overworld sprites.
4th Gen Matt, for the D/P Music. (It came from his resource pack, but no one is credited, so he gets credit until I find out who ripped it.)

This isn't meant to be a double post. (What is the time in between cutoff to constitute a double post, anyway? Isn't it only considered double if it's really close together?)

I've updated a few things. This includes the region map, features list, and screenshots. The new custom purple battle menus are shown, so is Blastoise's new (old) sprite, as well as the hero's overworld sprite. (It's just a recolored Gary... XD)

But most importantly, I've changed the game's name to Pokemon: Purple Sky. I think it fits much better with the Mewtwo theme. Does anyone know how I can have the official name of the thread changed to reflect this?

Thanks guys, and thanks Avatar for changing the title.

I added new screenshots, including the male hero, Crowe's trainer sprite, as well as 2 shots of his back sprite animation. (Yes they are frankensprites/recolors. This is really the extent of my trainer spriting skill. Do they at least look decent?)

Added a mapshot of Habidome Island, where the Habidome is located. It is accessible by ferry from Samphire City. (Not that this means anything to you yet, since I haven't introduced any cities...)

I sprited the Habidome myself from scratch. What do you think? Personally, I feel like the door sticks out a bit. I'm trying to figure out a way of making it blend more.

EDIT: Posted the new Habidome next to the mapshot. Which do you like better?

I would like to officially announce the tentative release date for the first beta. On October 29th (yep, in 2 days) you should expect to see the first beta of Pokemon: Purple Sky released for public testing!

The beta will (at the very least) include seven fully completed cities! This includes all events for everything completed so far, so you're basically playing through the first third or so of the game!

Wow that's quick for a beta. Alternatively, expect a huge turn out of flaming posts on the 30th if you fail to meet the date you set. I've seen it happen before, it's not pretty. :p I hope to see some great work from you on this.

Haha, yeah, I'm hoping to meet my deadline. I'm pretty much ready to go with what I have, but there are a few things I want to get done before the release.

And yeah, I guess it is pretty quick, but I was working on the game for a while before posting the thread.

Looks like it will be a good game. I like the new habidome better but the old one still looks cool. I don't think you should put in all 493 it would be too many for one region. Maybe you should if you do that second region.

Magnemite
October 29th, 2008, 05:30 AM
I was definitely considering the original 150 for a while, but I decided I'd be missing out on so much potential. All 493 will be in the game, though they won't all be in one region. ZOMG, does this mean a second region is confirmed? No, no it doesn't. At least not entirely. Ack, I'm revealing too much unintentionally! Or is it intentional? Who knows? I do. Now I'm just wasting time.

The end.

With the first Beta Release just hours away, I'd like to make this little announcement.

I'm just taking care of a few little cosmetic details, then I'll run my quick playthrough to make sure all teleports line up, and after that, Pokekmon: Purple Sky will be available for all of you to play!

This is a very well-thought out fangame. I like the story of Professor Oak and Mewtwo, and there is a team besides T.R. that wants to obtain Mewtwo's power.

I am definitely checking this for updates. Good luck on the beta. :)

I'm aware of the scrambled stat windows, but that problem is part of poccil's Pokemon Essentials. I'm trying to figure out how to fix it, though.

And about D/P moves and movesets: I definitely plan on doing that, but right now, it will take too much time, plus many of the D/P moves won't work without a lot of rewriting of scripts.

I'm a bit hazy on the Mewtwo story, as it's been quite a while since that all happened. My brain is jammed with 2nd-4th generation info right now. So why exactly is that?

And also, a quick announcement for everyone. I'll be out of town for the next 4 days, which means I probably won't be updating the thread. I'll try to keep up via my Sidekick for bug reports and other questions.

Although I am in Las Vegas, so don't expect me to dedicate too much time to the game.

It is just to unrealistic, the story line in the game looks more like a pokemon trainer than assistant, i know it is upto you but I would change part of the storyline a bit but still keep mewtwo in it. You could bring in mewtwo via a special event

I have only played the game for about 30 min since I downloaded it. Most of what I have ran across has been fine. I have found some things you need to look into:

I tried to not put any spoilers in, but if I did, I am sorry. I hid the text just in case.

I started the game somehow having the eighth badge. When I load the saved game it says I have the eight badge as well.

The person that confronts you outside the Mart, kinda just dissapears after taking two steps. This may have just been me, since you uploaded the whole game folder rather than a compressed game. I looked at the script and he is set to move left seven times.

Is Pokedex plural and singular? While talking to Oak he says Pokedexes, it just don't sound correct, again that may just be me.

In Oaks lab, the plants to the bottom left have no bases.

On the South end of the starting town, the house with the red roof, whatever is in front of it you can walk on, though I do not think you should be able to.

At Cassava Port, outside the building you can walk on one tile that is water. The tile is south of the right part of the building thats in the water.

In the buildings connecting the towns to Rt 302 the plants have the same no base tile error.

Although Orache City was the first pokemon center I used, When first entering it automatically healed my pokemon by just entering. This I looked into and have no idea why it happened.

When you Enter the Orache City Gym, you are sent to the battle field and not the entrance of the building. I looked at this... unless it is supposed to be like that, its an actual error.

When leaving the gym, the event set to go off by touch outside the gym did not go off until attempting to reenter the gym to purposely set it off.

Red isn't necessarily Ash, t's all opinion, & if Red is Ash in the game, screw it, it was invented during Red's adventure. Either way, it doesn't work (canon wise), & it never will.

Okie dokie, here are my explanations for various things:

Just before the download in the main post, there is a note about starting with the 8th badge. In this game, gyms are completely optional (although highly encouraged by NPCs) and because of this, all HMs are usable from the start. The only way for me to do this at the moment is to set all badges to be usable when you have the 8th badge, thus you automatically start with it.

About the grunt by the Pokemart: I noticed that as well, but it worked for me after playing again. I'm not sure why it does that, but I'll look into it. I was under the impression that it was corrected.

Pokedexes... Hmm... Perhaps I'll just change the text to "This is my latest Pokedex." Now that you bring it up, Pokedexes does sound a bit odd.

Those plants are meant to be like that, but if it doesn't look right, I'll change it. The way I see it, that's not the actual corner of the building. That's the corner of the ceiling, and the actual corner of the building is two tiles lower. But I guess that's not how they do it in the actual Pokemon games, so I'll fix this in all buildings.

The planters in front of the house will be fixed.

The same goes for the tile at Cassava Port.

Same explanation for the plants in Oak's Lab.

I hadn't noticed this Pokemon Center phenomenon. I'll look into it as well.

About the gym: I recently redid the inside, and I guess I forgot to move the teleport locations. The same will probably happen for the next few gyms as well.

If the event is set to "Player Touch" then that would happen. I'll set it to "Event Touch" and it should work fine.

Alright, regarding all this: Ash isn't mentioned anywhere. The boy from Pallet Town that I talked about is Red. I know Red is supposed to be Ash, but technically he isn't. I know you all played R/B/Y, and I know (or hope) you all caught Mewtwo. This is what I'm talking about. Red caught Mewtwo, then (after the game) he gave it to Professor Oak. I still don't see how this is impossible. This game takes place about three years after Red brought Mewtwo to Oak, which gives Oak about two and a half years of studying Mewtwo before it leaves and Oak moves to Kohku.

Now, regarding you being more of a trainer: I agree, it definitely feels that way, and it will probably feel like that for the duration of the game. Oak encourages you to do trainer-esque things along your journey. After all, he's just using you to run his semi-pointless errands while he concentrates on the Mewtwo project. He might as well try to make sure you have a little fun while doing so. He's a good boss, after all.

I'm impressed by all the custom sprites and coding you must've done to complete the battle system. I do hope you get around to putting in all pokemon, but of course, I think it will still be a great game. Good luck with this project!

I am at nearly 3 hours now playing the game. I have found some new errors for you.

Again, in case people feel that there are spoilers among this, I have added the appropriate tag:

When fighting Erica North of the city with the first Gym, after the battle she refers to you as PN, you forgot the \.

The cutable trees will "turn" toward you. So if you come at them from the sides they appear to be getting cut.

When you leave the Quickrail building in Fennel City, the door comes across rather than sliding together. I noticed this on the Gym's as well. They open correctly though.

You can walk right over the light poles in Fennel City.

In the Fennel City gym, the guy that should be blocking your way, the events on each side of him need to be set to player touch. Also the gym has no way to tell where the exit is.

You can walk on the white fence tiles.

When I was out of usable pokemon, I was sent to a Pokemon Center with the RMXP Guy as the nurse. Then he turned into Joy after the event of healing my pokemon has been complete.

When I tired leaving Cayenne City to the right, I ended up being sent to Fennel City after leaving the building. I think it is an error with Map # 74 West Border.

In the characters house, you can walk on top of the pc in the corner of the bedroom. Also on the desk and bed. In the downstairs of the house, you can walk on the bottom half of the table. Also, you can walk on the tile above the blue bookcase, its a wall.

You can walk on all of the kitchen sinks.

Thanks so much for pointing out all of these things. The only reason I was reluctant to release an open beta was because of errors like this that I would have missed. Rest assured, all of these things will be fixed for the next release.

Played the demo.
Your maps are really spacious and all, and I highly doubt your using any map-saving tricks (like, using less maps)

But it was fun to play. I had a good time.
I laughed a few times too. Dunno why. The "I hate people" guy was really random. :3

Next time, you might wanted to make an encrypted archive, though. People can open and edit your project to their liking.

Finally finished. I liked the story, it was fun to play. I found more errors, they should not be to hard to fix though. I agree with Trace, making a encripted archive would be a good idea, so that your ideas can not be taken. Though since you did not create one I was able to make it through the entire demo after fixing the errors.

I forgot to add how much I enjoyed the dome and how it was set up, it felt kinda small, but it's a great idea.

Anyway, spoiler tag for those who might find it all to revealing.

From Cayenne City to rt 305, it does not teleport to the correct map. It gor=es to Fennel City, it Should go to Map # 89 East Border.

I got a syntax error with the Hannah Grunt event. There is also a syntax error with Artemis as well. It is a problem with the script for the battles.

You can walk on top of the books on the table in the Ranch.

Artemis does not disappear when the rest of the people do at the ranch.

When entering the rear of the ranch, it appears as though there is a door closing.

On Cycling road, your script checks for a bike, but does not make the player get on the bike to enter cycling road.

In Samphire City, you can walk on the fountain.

You can't run or use the bike on rt 308.

You need to set it so that both events in the power plant that say the same thing are shut down after stepping on only one of them.

The pokemon at the end threw an error at me, I am unsure about the other two because I avoided them.

When you go upstairs on the ferry, it shows you going up and to the right rather than to the left.

The ferry doors need to be fixed, I got stuck on them leaving the northern rooms.

The Captain's room entrance puts you on top of the door where you cant move, you don't get teleported to the Captain's Room at all.

The second battle with Artemis also has an error with the script.

the Habidome has a few errors. The first is not with the dome itself, but rather Jay is still with you. And when leaving the dome, it sends you outside rather than to the lobby.

There was some error with trying to board the ferry back to Samphire City.

These minor things may have been mentioned but i'll post any way.
1. The books on the floor in Oak's Lab you can walk on.
2. You can walk on the Pokedex in Oak's Lab before you get it.

I've played up to the police asking you questions.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm correcting all of the tile and teleport errors pointed out right now, as well as looking into the script errors.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game. Quick question: How exactly do I encrypt my data?

ohh you just right-click on the file that you want to encrypt choose properties click on the tab that says advance and there should be a popup with 4 boxes 2 are checked and 2 are not just click the bx that says encrypt contents to secure safety and there you have an encrypt file. :D

I like the trainer sprite as well as the uniques Blastoise one (it's good to see different sprites of the same Pokemon)

I come bearing bad news. This project has been scrapped.

I have been working on another project for some time, and I would just like to say that it is much better than Purple Sky in nearly every possible way. For those of you who enjoyed Purple Sky, please stay tuned for my next project.

I can't say when or even if I'll be posting a thread, as I find they slow down my progress. I may put a little something up, but nothing flashy that I'll have to spend too much time on.
