Why are Yeats and Eliot the "foremost figures of 20th-century literature"? They do nothing for me. Not Yeats' mysticism and idealism, not Eliot's scholastic and ambiguous language. I do like poetry. Truly. Take Larkin (http://www.artofeurope.com/larkin/lar1.htm), for instance. This poem means something. Maybe it's because I read it at 1 am at night, but the imagery and obscenities cut me to the quick. Or this one (http://www.artofeurope.com/larkin/lar6.htm).

But Eliot and Yeats - I despair. The allusions. The ambiguousity. Oh, the essays that have been written on "The Hollow Men", each with its own interpretation, attributing deep, all-encompassing meanings to that poem. "The disillusionment of a generation"? Maybe I'm too young, I was born in the wrong time.
