This is only one the last day.
I think it's 78, seeing it's what 12 + 11 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 equals.
In total it would be 364

I'm gonna say 364, since he gave 1 item the first day 2 items the next plus the item he gave the day before, 3 the 3rd plus the items he gave on the 1st and second day, and so on................
But this is a bit tricky, so I'm not sure:D,

Yup, it's 364. I know it already as we actually did this in an A-Level Maths class the other day. ^_^; I'm also able to tell you how many gifts were given on the n days of Christmas (i.e. a general term wherein any number can be put in the place of n).
So, on the nth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:
n³/6 + n²/2 + n/3
This factorises to:
n/6(n+1)(n+2)

It isn't known whether the tree was already possessed by the receiver of all of the gifts before the 12 days of Christmas or not.
Also, like someone else I don't count people as items either so my final answer is 224 if I added everything up correctly. I may not be correct however.

well, total items are 78
but in total, including all times said is: 1+3+6+10+15+21+28+36+45+55+66+78 = 364
so thats one present for each day of the year, aside from christmas day :D
