How to change correctly the Intro hero in FR/LG

by>Dante<

Italian/English translation by Sean Visinoni
English text fixed by BZuma

Most of you, know the tutorial by the famous Zel which teaches how to change the intro hero by recoloring the sprite in black and white.

Though I esteem Zel, I always had the impression that it was wrong.

As a matter of fact I manage to discover an easier way that may also be useful for many other things.

First of all I'd like to thank HackMew for theaching me this method ^^.

Requests:

-VisualBoy Advance;

-FR/LG Rom;

-Photoshop (I use CS2 version);

-UnlzGBA;

-Free Space Finder (FSF);

First Part: Research

First of all, you have to open the ROM with Unlz.GBA, and go to go to 341 (more or less) using 256 color and Black/White mode.

http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/1517/85404993tm0.png

As you can see, it's easy to observe that this is the male character, while the others PGs (Female, Professor, Rival) are in the following go to.

Now that you have found the sprite you must save it, and I suggest you to save it in format .PNG.

Now, play your rom until the moment when the game asks you to chose which Character you want to be, male or female...

Then click on Tools --> Palette Viewer...

as in the image:

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4279/10920506pj3.png

The palette we need are in the left pannel (Background), so you'll have to save that palettes by clicking on "SAVE BG" and save the palette in .ACT:

http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/5343/74788389fb9.png

Second Part: Photoshop and Sprite

Now we can finally use Photoshop.

I know that not all of you have it, but it's very useful to modify images.

Open the sprite we saved before with Photoshop:

Image --> Mode --> Colours table

as in the image:

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/844/81107264uj4.png

It will appear the colour table that obviously will be toned-down from black to white

http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/1961/66771733jj7.png

Now you have to go to "Load" and you open the palette in .ACT format that we saved before...

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/2527/13500369js8.png

et voillà!

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/866/26500184hj5.png

The hero has now the right palettes. Before you start editing the sprite, I suggest you to change the background, because it's black and may create some confusion... so put a bright colour...

To do this you just have to go back to the colour table and edit the first colour.

http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/765/52675340dr6.png

I decided to use kyledove's sprite, but you can chose your favourite!

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8180/60450305ln6.png

Third Part: Insert

after you have modify the sprite you must insert it. So, now you must use Free Space Finder (FSF) by HackMew.

With this you can search for any free offset that exists.

Let's go back to UNLZ, insert the sprite and then Write to Rom

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6073/60829067wg1.png

Now you will have to select the things you want to use... in this case they are:

-export image

-Auto abort if new data is bigger

Remember that YOU DON'T HAVE TO SELECT "EXPORT PALETTE" or your rom may crash...
If you selected the things I told you to select, it should appear this window:

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/1523/34573270ak8.png

In this case the image is bigger than the previous one and there's no enough space...

So UNLZ asks you if you want to reduce the image... click on Cancel, but remember the code I've selected (76C)*.

*Remember that this is just an example and your is sure different.

This number is in hexadecimal (HEX), but we have to bring it to decimal (DEC)...

To change it, you just need the windows calculator, using the scientific mode.

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/2576/53728399qh0.png

Now we turn in HEX:

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/3899/32982010lb0.png

As you can see, 76C is Hex and Dec it's 1900.

Now you have to copy this number, open Free Space Finder (FSF) and you search for your rom.

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/9493/71430566uq2.png

In the section "bytes needed" there’s 64 by default, replace it with your new number, and click on search.

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/3226/72971041wg0.png

We finally found our free offset, the one that UNLZ need to insert the image.

Now you go back to UNLZ and do again Write to Rom:

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/526/65145495pd1.png

But this time you'll have a new offset. So now select:

-export image

-Auto abort if new data is bigger

and

-automaticly fix pointers

and paste the offset that we found with FSF in the box image offset

http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/2922/51145726rw9.png

and click OK

Now you'll see a message which will say to you that your image has been saved with a new offset.

Now you just have to try your Rom hoping that all has went as it should...

If you find an error try reading again the tutorial and check out if you missed anything.

If the problem persists don't resist and ask ^^

if you would to open the pal ACT in hotoshop you must do:

I can answer this.... no, it is just recommended so you can see your sprite's outline against a brighter background.

hen this is the best time to buy it. There is a Photoshop 7 with Premeire Elements for about in the 100-120 dollar range. For that version and later, you go on:

(Images- Mode- Color Table)

Thanks for the guide ,Dante because this is forwarding my rom hack by alot in the visuals apartment.

This helped me a lot.
Btw, for the people who don't have photoshop, u can use paint:
1. Make ur sprite before hand.
2. Do all the stuff in the tutorial then save your image.
3. Open up the saved image and then your sprite.
4. Place your sprite over the old one and colour in the background.
5. Insert. It worked for me!

Never mind, don't do this. I'm trying to insert this: http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=3173&pictureid=21341

I got this problem A LOT. I fixed it! You just have to go to the female or male choice screen and pick one. When you choose male, then go to "Tools" at the top of your VBA game and click "Pallet viewer" then take a screen shot of the page.

Paste the screen shot in MS paint or whatever your image editing program is, then cut out the pallet colours only, click "Copy" abd then click undo twice. Paste only your little pallet of colours for the male character then make ABSOLUTE SURE that every single last colour in your character is replaced with those pallet colours.

If any given one is not from that pallet or if you accidentally selected a background colour, it'll turn orange and green and neon blue in the game, blah blah blah. I accidentally got the same thing wrong as you did here and I think this is your problem:: You might have selected colours from OAK or RIVAL who have entirely different colour pallets from the Hero and Heroine. The game won't see them right and will make them look like THE HULK when you try to patch the game with them. >__> Don't do that. ^^;

Trial and error will get all of the colours right until your character is fully coloured correctly.

And there ya go~

Hey Dante, sorry I haven't got around to posting this before but I have to thank you for this excellent tutorial, it's really helped me with quite a few things.

This tutorial combined with Hack Mew's Knowledge on Palette editing has helped me with what I have managed to achieve. I now can alter the Pokemon's (both yours and the opponents) status bar. I personally went for a Platinum look but can achieve many other designs.

I don't know if this has been done before but if you look in the attachments, there is an ingame screenshot of my new Platinum style Status Bar.

Thanks again

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what went wrong? I tried to insert the fire red hero's sprite into the heroine's intro but it still came out like that even though I edited the palette and all. btw I'm using gimp..

if I'm not wrong, the motive for this error is that you have also imported the palette on UNLZ together with the image..

you retry exactly following all the passages as in the images, and you verify that you have correctly selected all the options...

Hey I have a question.
When I paste the intro's sprite it looks like this:

try to past it into paint after you have put the original palette to the image

http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/2416/1636pokemonfireredversi.png

Can someone tell me the problem?
you don't have correctly indexed the image..
the color that you have used for the background is not correct..
and as it regards the palette...
same thing that I have said to mineowyn and Zanny77.

Awesome tutorial! Thank you so much for writing it, it really helped :D

I have a problem where the sprites' colours are a tiny bit lost when in game. I took pictures and everything but I can't post them because of the '15 posts or more' thing, so :| Anyway, the bigger problem:

For the hero and rival sprites, they both mess up after they are named (after the professor asks you to give a name to them in game). The hero's hair turns green in the highlights and the rival is just completely messed up, except for the skin.

So I used APE to replace the palettes, but I'm probably doing something wrong--I went to photoshop -> colour table -> save to export the 256 colour palette, then imported that .act file into APE. I know that APE only accepts 16 colours while I'm using 256, so do I have to downgrade the sprite into 16 colour mode or is there some other way to make it not mess up?

It insn't a problem..
you can chanhe you palettes later..
al tuo sprite vengono applycate le palette dello sprite base di FR/LG..
you can change it whit APE
APE offset:
Boy intro ------>0046161C
Rival Intro ---->004623B0
Prof intro ----->004623B4
Girl Intro ------>00460EF0

Your problem is very common..
I recommend you to color with the exact colors of the sprite of FR/LG, your sprite..
in this way you won't have any problem with the colors..

As it regards to care the colors from Photoshop to APE, it is a wrong thing..
it doesn't serve..
it is a part that there is not in the tutorial..
if you your sprite with the same colors base of FR/LG, then you can change after your palettes with the colors that you prefer..
== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==
For everybody
I advise to always color your sprites with the colors base of the original sprites that you want to replace.
The colors them you can change subsequently thanks to APE...
in the first post there are the whole offsets for the sprites.

Excellent tutorial, but it doesn't work for me. I don't use Photoshop, I use PhotoImpact, which does allow me to import a palette, but when i do, the black and white sprite does not change colours correctly, the sprite just becomes a dominantly dark shade of gray. Some of us can't get photoshop because it requires money so we have to buy photoshop using paypal so some of does not have paypal because some of us don't have credit card. Did you click on the drop down box? It should be:
Files of Type: Color Table(*.ACT)
Either that, or you haven't saved properly.

I'm having the same problem. I save it as a .atc, but it's not available in Photoshop. So i check the folder. It's there, but it's saved as a .pal file. So I try again. I make cure to choose .atc. Simple fix. It is actually created as a .act file, but you're going to have to rename it to bg.act instead of bg.pal

This gba has an error with it where it ignores the variable title, and the variable extension, but it does create it as the right file type, but labels it incorrectly. That was a scripting error on their part.

Try looking for the first color in the pallet, and use that instead.when i go to import my sprite, it says "image is not indexed" and then won't do anything. :/ help?It needs to be 4bpp, or 16 colors. Go download Irfanview (Google is your friend), and then find an option to decrease the "color depth" (I don't remember where), and select 16 colors, or 4bpp.

Also, if it's made from a computer using a newer OS, like Windows 7 or Snow Leopard, will always be rejected for some reason. Try using Windows XP instead if you're not already.

@OP Why would you waste 2 hours (and $500) downloading Photoshop when you could just take, like, five minutes to find the right pallet? And even so, unLZ usually gives you the right pallet most of the time anyways.

The first color in any pallet should always be a light-green color. Try looking for the first color in the pallet, and use that instead.

I am having the same problem with the heroine that I replaced for FR (my greenish background won't go transparent and instead black is transparent).
When I check on APE for the pallette, the light green color IS first... and my black is the next two colors. Help?

Also, APE confuses me in general and I am not sure if my heroine palette #1 is supposed to be the same of different from my heroine palette #2 in the end...?

Last, Dante, great tutorial. It took a long time for me to even get this far, and although a lot of your explanations were confusing, your basic steps got me past a lot of bugs I have been having with other tutorials! So thanks!
