pokemon emerald question

hey,i got a question about pokemon emerald.i've read that in the battle frontier u get an apprentice,who follows u around and sometimes u get to battle with him.now,i'm in battle frontier but he never appeared!
is it because that is only in the japanese version?

Your apprentice is there, but it doesn't follow you around per se. They can be found in the Battle Tower, over in the left corner. They will ask you a series of questions, which will actually develop their team and battling style. Then, once you have answered all the questions, you will either face off against them or include them as a teammate in the 2 player battles.
