Does anybody experience these annoying internet filters at school? The ones that block out anything decent. I can't get onto any decent sites including PC because they've all been blocked. Neither can I find a proxy that works at school because somehow they're all blocked.

Anyway, does this happen to anyone else..?

Why would need to go to the internet in school, seriously the computers are like crappy (tho the art and movie room computers are descent)

just use your home computer to browse the internet.

These filters do not annoy me I never have any trouble with them.

We do quite alot of Internet work at school and It's nice to do a bit of browsing inbetween work, especially when it's just the teacher waffling about crap.

I never care, as I don't browse on the Internet at school. I work at school instead of playtime. That is to keep students from straying off of schoolwork. I just use my laptop when I have the time at home, or on school breaks.

School is for work, not for browsing the internet.
You have a limited time at school, use it.

I asked permission to make a thread on all my progress at hacking my school, but was declined. :<

I don't have any trouble with the filters now, I can pretty much use their computers just as I would at home in basically every aspect. >:3

When I was in high school they blocked PBS...but not porn...I'm not making this up. XD

Now that I'm in college, they can monitor what we are watching, but there are no actual filters.

I can understand the school blocking out pornography sites and stuff like that, but why would you block game sites? A few students actually sent the school board a letter saying to stop blocking unnessasary websites. The school board responsed by blocking Google, Yahoo, and other home websites just to piss everyone off for the rest of the school year.

That was the worst time - Nobody could finish any projects are anything.

I don't go on the internet at school since I'm not taking any computer classes or anything this year. So no access at school for me. Even if I did, I wouldn't bother anyways.

Yeah I can understand blocking pornography but they even have educational sites blocked.

I never bother using the school computers to do research because of this for all of second semester of '08. What the NSW Department of Education and Training actually do from what I've experienced is block ALL websites and mark them as uncategorised and only allow websites they personally have checked rather than blocking inappropriate websites.

Holy crap. Get off the holier than thou train and lay off. Everyones had an extra ten minutes in the library they could spend as they see fit and this is no different.

Yeah I can understand blocking pornography but they even have educational sites blocked.

They did the same thing last year too. There is this website called funbrain.com - You can imagine it's for the other kids to go on and play fun games that include stradegy and mathematics.

They ended up blocking it saying that it had 'Games' on the websites. No ____ sherlock. If you have done some research, you would have found out that it's a school recommended website for games that include schools skills.

Schools put the worst people in charge. For a change, I'd like to see them put in smart people and I can imagine people actually wanting to go to school.

Definitely. I remember having a large and rather loud fight over the phone with the administrator of the school networks because they blocked my favorite site.
(She was really dumb, I just ended up evading the filters anyways)

If I tried to do either of those, the school administrator would probably ban my login. =\

They did that to me once and I had to explain myself. :<

Yes, even my college blocks places like Youtube.

I've no problem with it though, since I'm there to work, not laugh at US Marines putting grenades in washing machines.

There are some sites that are still open to schools but that's just kid games, but if our school finds a decent website then we usually get a cool programme which hides the window :D

But our teacher knows what it is and will ban anyones account with it O.o

I find it really annoying when the school filter systems block everything out, yes and i agree with the blocking of pornagraphic websites.

We have them though they aren't too excessive. Some of them get really annoying, but you get used to them. Besides, if people are really serious about not doing anything, they're usually text messaging or something of that nature. I wish they'd be goner, but knowing some people at my school, they're probably necessary lol.

Lol the boys at my school used google and found porn in computer class, and the teacher was so mad.

My School has blocked any page that contains the word "game". It also blocks names of games, so PC is also blocked. o3o I can't even get on eBay. Sometimes Google gets blocked too if the results throw up something that contains that word "game".

Not to be rude, and I do agree for the most part, but not everyone does have that time. I went to prep school and had a ton of work up till Senior year. In certain situations most people don't really have the time to be looking up stuff online. I only discovered the PBS thing because I had an assignment I had to do.

Well I'm forced to use PC's IP address since PC's address is blocked.
Some of us can't use the Library PC and Home PC so the school's PC has to substitute. =/

I assume this happends to everyone. I don't care for it anymore because at school, I only surf the web for various wiki info, yahoo mail, or go to my home forum. And that's only if I'm on te net. I'm usually either playing roms, M.U.G.E.N, or Halo(networked lol) if I'm not doing my work. lol

Lol, everything is blocked in my school. And as soon as it shows up that you tried to go into a 'blocked' site the teacher gets a phone call, and it's mostly people trying to get into website for projects and stuff.

Anything with mail is blocked, actually.
And Photobucket, Youtube, and other sites.
Believe it or not, most gaming sites aren't blocked. I've seen people on Shockwave games playing games. I haven't checked PC yet, but I don't think it would to be honest. We actually have quite a bit of liberty on the computers, even though we're not supposed to play games, most do anyways.

But I'm not on much. I do my homework, then socialize.

I use the computers in the learning center of my school daily during my lunch period so I don't have to go to the cafeteria (it's icky :X). Trying to evade the blocked sites can be a hassle, especially now that proxies are blocked too. It took me a lot of tries to download VBA and a Leaf Green ROM on there. I had to try different sites.

I don't think PC is blocked, and neither is the main forum I visit, but I like to delete my browsing history daily just in case some jerk ass official decides to go snooping in other peoples' accounts.

That isn't necessarily true. It depends on the administrator or whomever is in charge of the system. For New South Walers, all kinds of webmail is blocked by the NSW DET and we're forced to use our DET emails which are really long.

For my Computer Multimedia Art class, we were doing photomanipulations. The teacher told us to go on Google and find pictures to use. I typed in "grass" in images, and came up with a "Blocked site: Weaponry" ...Grass is a weapon now, did anyone else know that? XD

It only gets annoying for me when sites that would be extremely useful for a project (Youtube, etc.) are blocked.

Frankly, IMO, its stupid. The schools should actually have teachers that pay attention to what websites the students are going to then to just let an inefficient computer program do it for them.

Although they even block proxies at my school, and usually teachers are completely ignorant of the internet to even know what those are, so props to them.

At my secondary school, it ended up that EVERYTHING got blocked and only a few specific sites were unblocked. The teachers got really angry and since I was doing ICT, it was completly stupid. They ended up letting people doing ICT and applied Science have full access, haha.

At my college, we cna go on quiet a lot, except if it has the word "game" in it. Obviously it's not perfect and blocks some thing I need, but doesn't block others that should. Neither PC or YouTube are blocked. It would be quite stupid to block YouTube because the teachers use videos from there sometimes to show us, it's pretty cool. We've watched a few videos from YouTube in psychology and English and they were genuinly useful. I go on PC while I'm in ICT XD Email sites aren't blocked because, although we have our own school email system, the admins must recognise we prefer our own. So our blocking system isn't too bad

Some stuff, you want pictures and they block pics as well. I hate this though because in Winter and cold days I have nothing to do at lunch. Who knows PC's IP address? Just wanted to try it.

At my school everything is blocked except revision sites, Wikipedia and the school site. *_* I think there was like, an issue over porn or something a few years back...Still, it'd be nice to go on PC in school ^_^

Lets see... we have a block on Google Images also, Youtube, various game sites and the obvious pron. They also have a system where they can check what you're doing from the admin PC, a little software which pops up and shows the 30-40 computers in one window and what they're doing in real time. So it's kinda hard not to get caught doing anything that's not work-related even though you can simply evade filters by using a proxy bypass website. It's also made harder since there's a team of students also watching out for people not doing work.

Yeah, my school has that kind of system running too. Once we had a science class in a computer room and we were doing quizes and mini-games and suddenly an IT staff ran into the room and said "Who's playing games?" That was hilarious. x.x

My filter is awesome. It unblocked PC last week.

It has many websites blocked but it isn't blocking the recently popular "Stick Page" that has a helload of gore.

5 Dollars it will be blocked this week XD.

There are a number of programs built to evade school firewalls.

My favorite way is to get a flash drive with a Virtual Machine on it. If that's too complex. Then there's always JAP: http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/win/download_en.html
Put that program on a flash drive and run it that way.

An even easier way would be to use the Java Web Start version: http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/develop/javawebstart_en.html. Download the Java web start file, get to it on the school computer and run it. (Most newer machines should support it) But yeah. JAP is a nice and flexible way to slip around school firewalls if you dont have admins watching everything you're doing.
