View Full Version : [Graphics] A Beginner's guide to inserting d/p sprites into a gba rom(No need to outline)

psyduck6199
March 3rd, 2009, 05:34 PM
PLEASE DO NOT STEAL THIS.

This is a tutorial to insert sprites larger than 64x64 in a gba rom without you having to outline(so boring). This tutorial also works for backsprites.

Things you will need:

unlz-gba(hacked)(get it from hackmew's thread)
microsoft paint(comes with windows xp or vista)
a rom of your choice.(get it somewhere)
freespace finder(get it from hackmew's thread)
irfanview(just google it)

Stage 1(Spriting)

1. Open up the sprite u are inserting with paint. I will use torterra.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-1.jpg
2. Fill the background with a color not used by the sprite. I will use blue.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-2.jpg
3. Now goto Image>Stretch/Skew. Put both the circled values to 80 if u are using a d/p sprite or anything else if u are using some other sprite.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-3.jpg
4. Save it. Now minimize paint and open up that picture in irfanview. Then go to Image>Decrease color depth. Select 16 Colors (4 BPP). The image will look a little messed up after this. Don't panic!
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-4.jpg
5. Now goto Image>Pallete>Edit Pallete. Find your background color there. Also open up a notepad or get something to write with. Write down the Value:RGB for the background color and the first color(in the left corner).
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-5.jpg
6. Now exchange those two colors. Double click the background color and put in the value of the first color.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-6a.jpg
Double click the first color and put in the value of the background color.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-6b.jpg
7. The image will look messed up again(and don't panic again). Now save the file from irfanview using a different name than the paint file. Close irfanview and the notepad.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-7.jpg
8. Goto the minimized paint file press Ctrl+A(to select it) and press Ctrl+C(to copy it). ALso open up the irfanview file you just closed using paint.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-8.jpg
9. Now press Ctrl+V(to paste it) in the messsed up picture.
it should look like this...
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/1-9.jpg
10.Save it and now u can delete the old picture but make sure you keep the new one.

Stage 2(Inserting)

1. Now,open up unlz-gba(hacked) and open your gba rom with it. Goto a picture you you want to replace. I will replace venusaur. Get the numbers for pokemons somewhere else. In firered the pokemon pictures start at 669.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/2-1.jpg
2. Click import and select the file that you didn't delete.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/2-2.jpg
3. Click write to rom.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/2-3.jpg
4. Make sure "Expot Image" and "Auto Abort if new data is bigger" are checked and press ok. Uh-oh! It didn't work. Note the compressed size.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/2-4.jpg
5. Now is the time for you to open up your free space finder. Open up your rom with it. Select "Search from the beginning of the ROM". In the right bottom corner in a box called "HEX", put in the Compressed Size i told you to note. You will have noticed that a number has appeared above that box in a box called "Dec". Copy the number in the Dec box to the "Needed Bytes" box. Note the numbers/letters(HEX Number) that appeared.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/2-5.jpg
6. Go back to unLz-GBA(hacked). and click on write to rom again. This time also select the "Automatically Fix Pointer" box. In the box that says "Image Offset: put in the number I told you to note. Also don't forget the two zeros before the number.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/2-6.jpg
7. Click ok and it should say something like this...
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/2-7.jpg
8. Almost done. Now click on write to rom again. But this time make sure you have only checked "Export Pallete" and ""Auto Abort if new data is bigger". Click ok.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Gaurav61/2-8.jpg
9.Now you are done. Open up your rom and check it out. Here's mine.

Finally a good way to do this.
Specially the indexing thing, since I have seen the replace-new-with-old-sprite-after-indexing thingy on only ONE tut apart of this.

Thank you

The same way as this, except you index the back sprite and search for the back sprite in unLZ-Gba and then replace it

yeah to change the backsprite its the same way but just make sure you go to previous pal and you don't need to export pallete if you have already put in the front sprite. oh ya i got the irfan view idea from u red yoshi

What do you mean by never aborts? Its only supposed to abort if the Sprite is too big and such.

March 7th, 2009, 06:53 PM
if it doesn't abort then it still works

It's pretty much the same thing as Pokemon Sprites except you don't need a back sprite for trainer sprites. The sprite you are inserting is not indexed, thus you cannot import it into the rom.

Actually it does. But in Emerald you have to also insert a 2nd sprite for the animation.

Here is a guide on how to do it on Emerald

Would it be something like this?

How would you insert all the forms of arceus? I looked at pokemon with diferent forms and they were just put on one picture. so I did that, I took a picture with all the forms on it, and when I tried to insert unlz-gba just closed.

Certain Pokemon are like that, such as the Unown. To insert all forms of Arceus you would have to use up the 25 empty slots or Overwrite some of the other Pokemon and edit the evolution.

Example : Use Fire Stone on Arceus = Fire Type Arceus and to revert Arceus back to "Normal" Arceus use something like a Moon Stone

Thank you! It works very well, but I believe the finished sprite still needs some cleaning. I did this with a Gallade sprite and used a violet background, but when I finished Gallade had a slightly violet border. Anyway it's not really evident in game, so it works.

Without Engine Hacking, there are 25 free data slots between Celebi and Treecko. Insert your pokemon into free hex spane (look at torferno-x's tutorial for more information on this).

Would this also work for the backsprite? Changing the front sprite of Trecko to Turtwig worked fine, but changing the back sprite of Trecko to Turtwig didn't quite work. If I fix one, the other is messed up. Any ideas?

I indexed the sprites by myself, and I think that might be part of the problem. Can anyone index the Turtwig sprites (Front and back regular) for me? If it doesn't work after someone else's sprites, I don't know what to do.

You should make a guide on replacing backsprites. Using UNLZ.GBA doesn't work, and I think there's something different you have to do to get it to work. The backsprite after the front sprite in UNLZ.GBA is for shiny, and the backsprite of the regular sprite becomes discolored.

Okay, heres what happend to me.
I inserted the DP starters and The front sprites worked just fine, but when i went to battle with them, the back sprites were all weird and discolored.
I use a program called photofiltre because it can index the sprites by itself.
Also, I use pokepic, and when i insert the pokemon it always says the image is too big, expand the rom for further space.
So i open RS Ball, and the sprites look fine. But in the game they dont.
Are there any pokepic tutorials? Unlz-gba doesnt work on my computer. /:

Didn't notice this...I was going to put one of these up...but it looks like you beat me to it...

@JohnObrien~Did you use FSF to redirect it to an offset...you must do that or you'll a message Saying its too big...But I can't be sure of this cause I use Unlz...I'm pretty sure your BackSprite Problem is due to you not inserting the Shiny Backsprite...You must insert the SHINY backsprite or it will have an odd Palette...If I'm wrong feel free to Correct me...

Well actually i didnt really know how to use FSF, So thats why I didnt do it.
And yeah, I inserted both the front sprite, back sprite, and shiny back sprite.
and it looked fine. All the front sprites look normal, but the back ones, uhm, the colors seem to look, different. kind of like, metalic-ish? Ah, I wish I could upload attachments, haha!

You must redirect it to an Offset or it won't look normal...You can Find offset through Hexing too...Though I'd recommend Using FSF...I'd show you but I havent Inserted Backsprites yet...

Ok, what happens with me, I'm following every step, but it doesn't work correctly, in the game, the pokemon looks really messed up. This should work for custom pokemon, right? I used d/p sprites for the customs. Does the original size of it matter, because mine are a little big. And in step 7, nothing like that comes up. And in the game theres alot of it missing, but in unLZ, it shows the pokemon I tried overwriting but with the background color of my custom and all weird colors.

I've followed your isntructions, and inserted the sprite, but when i write to ROM (the first time) two things happen:
1)i dont get the "ptr found at XXXXXXX. changed" message.
2) if i press previous and then enxt the sprite will have become messed

Also, i've noticed my unLZ is different to yours. it doesen't actually have room on the image offset for two 00's, the set out is different and it doesen't give me the "auto abort if new data is bigger" message. I was wondering if you:
a) know what was wrong with what i'm doing
b)could tell me what version of unLZ your using, to check if mines outdated.

other than that, its a great tutorial. i like the way used screen shots. helped alot.

However, when I use a sprite that requires a different offset, I followed the instructions to the letter, when I encounter the pokemon with the change sprite the rom simply crashes. (I am using fire red if it matters)

I was wondering if anyone could tell me why this happens and how I can fix it.

Thanks in advance!!

Try using Poke Edit Pro. It lets you change the Sprite offsets for the Pokemon. All you need to do is just insert the image in Unlz to an empty offset (only have export image ticked) and then change the Sprite offset in Poke Edit Pro, its in reverse hex so if your offset is 123456 it would be 65 34 12. Do the same with the palette (only have export palette ticked), but use a different offset.

Someone said earlier that backprite should be shiny is he correct bcs i was trying normal back sprite

Also about going to previous pal for inserting backsprite is it previous pal of backsprite of pokemon given just after front sprite in ulza?

havent been on much lately and pretty much quit the spriting and rom hackign scene...
but i beleive u replace the shiny back sprite with a new shiny backsprite. just make sure the palletes for the both back and front sprite match ip otherwise ur pic is gonna be messed up.

and guys thanks for all he comments.

just one question. How do u change the NAME of the Pokemon?

I use yape, though pokeamp works good too. theyre both somewhere on the tools section. these can also change attacks, evolutions, stats etc but you need egg move editor to change egg moves.

After following the steps shown, I get this:

But when I move to another image and go back, I get this...

I do believe (and hope) I indexed this correctly.
What have I done wrong? :(

Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you repoint the image? If you did, then the old sprite will still stay in the ROM, but would be unused. Simples.

But, I would check one thing. From noticing the colour order in the pallette, your background isn't the 1st colour.

The way I'd use is with Irfanview. Open Irfanview, save the image as a gif, with the option to select a transparent colour on (you pick these when saving the pic), and select the background after you have clicked Save.

Ugh! Why do I find this so difficult!

Ok, let me tell you the steps I took:
1. The sprite wasn't indexed so I opened it in Photoshop and indexed it there, no problems.
http://fox-dev.co.uk/stuff/step1.png
2. I open Irfanview and change the 1st palette to the BG palette.
http://fox-dev.co.uk/stuff/step2.png
3. I change the old BG palette to the colour that was in the 1st palette.
http://fox-dev.co.uk/stuff/step3.png
(There's alot of black sections in here compared to the original tutorial, this is where I think I've messed up!).
4. I save the image.
*5. I then import the image into FireRed. Again, no problems here.
6. When I go in game, the background is visible but there is transparancy around the actual sprite.

*When I try to do the bit where you copy/paste the original image over the one from Irfanview, it became un-indexed. Even when I indexed it back I still got the same issue.

I followed Banjora Marxvile's suggestion to save it as a GIF but even this still produced the same issue.

H-help! :(

H-help! :(

Look carefully at the last picture you have. The Black moved itself to the background, and as that is no longer the transparent colour, that explains the background.

I only use IrfanView, I recommend you Google it, and download it, and then use that, Decrease Color Depth to 16 colours, save it as a GIF, select the background as the transparent colour when it asks you to, and voila, indexed and ready to insert.

EDIT: I said use IrfanView, as it allows you to select the transparent background option when you save it (a little check box), so that is why it didn't work!

You must have the hacked version. Hackmew made it so it always aborts if it's too big, and removed the button.

Hi, I am really new to all this. I happen to have the same indexing problem like some previous posters though I still haven't found the solution yet. Most if not all have solved it but none actually mentioned how.

Every time I try to import the image, it still says "Error: Image not Indexed"

I have followed every single instruction and use the same tools. I tried saving in GIF format as suggested by someone. That took away the indexing problem but it is no longer too big to abort. In the end, my sprite sorta looked invisible.

Anyway, this is still a really helpful guide. :) Thanks.

EDIT: I think the root of the problem (for me at least) lies in pasting the original unindexed pic over the indexed one. I mean, wouldn't the pic revert back to being non-indexed if i pasted the original over the indexed pic? And for some reason, even after I exported my palette, the image in the game (or when re-opening unLZ) is different. Tried all sorts of methods (will try indexing using Photoshop soon) but still cannot solve this.

EDIT:

SOLUTION: Make sure you are not using Paint for Windows 7. For some reason, it just refuses to open the indexed pic as an indexed pic (and I think it changes it back to being un-indexed). Use Paint which came with Windows XP. One (noteworthy) thing though, I can't seem to save it under a different name but it's no problem actually. Not too sure about the one for Vista. Hope this helps as it worked for me. :P

This is really helpful! (I find myself coming back to thing when inserting big sprites)

But i do have one question: After inserting a sprite of Mewtwo and gone through each step correctly and then restarting UnLZ, why is the Mewtwo palette there but not the Mewtwo sprite (The original sprite is there instead)?
I've played my rom and it has the correct image within the game, but UnLZ doesn't.

Is this a bug for UnLZ or is there a problem with the offset i used? :\

Interesting. This is what I get when I resize: [SPRITE] - Not allow to quote URLs until 15 posts.

Did you paste the original resized sprite over the decreased colour depth sprite in paint?

If so, then when decreasing the colour depth to 16 colours UNCHECK Floyd - SteinBerg Dithering, so you wont get those dots all over the sprite.

Tell me if you have any more problems or you don't understand this stuff ;)

Neither. You put the sprite in a new offset, unlz still has the old offset. It isn't a bug or anything, it is just the sprite you inserted is somewhere else, because you placed it there, and the old sprite is still in the ROM, at the offset unlz is at.

You get the sprite of togekiss and goto infranview and decrease colour depth to 16 colour bit. Uncheck the Floyd-SteinBerg dithering and click OK. Then save it as a different name like togekiss 64 indexed or something. Open paint, copy and paste the NOT INDEXED sprite of togekiss on the indexed sprite and save it. There you go, you have successfully indexed your sprite :). Tell me if you have any more problems ;) Also if it doesn't work I can do it for you ;)

If you're sprite is already at 64x64, you do not need to resize.

Why he put resize to 80% is because 80% of 80 is 64. If your sprite isn't 80, you need to resize it to 64 pixels by 64 pizels

Do you have to put the blue out line on any sprite your doing

If you meant the background, it needs to have a colour at the background that is very different to the ones the sprite uses. Like a very very bright, eye burning pink.

Why is it when I go to import the new sprite in and after using space finder and writing it to the ROM, if I go to the back sprite, and then go straight back to the front sprite that i just completed, the picture is the old sprite(in this case charmander) is very discolored. and where did my new sprite go? and in the game its discolored as the charmander rather than the new one. am i not getting enough space from space finder?

Windows 7 Paint refuses to accept the image as " indexed ". I suggest you download PAINT.NET and Go from there. Also this goes to everyone having the problem of pasting the unindexed image over the indexed image. Download PAINT.NET and your problems should be solved.

Hey guys! I was experimenting and Idk if someone already posted this but you know how that outline always shows up that matches the background? Well to get rid of it instead of stretching/skewing your sprite then saving it don't. Instead just give it a background color and save a copy (or just save the image but I make copies just in case). Then do the steps you would in infranview, decreasing color depth, etc., then you stretch and skew both images (don't worry if the indexed one looks weird) copy the non indexed image and paste it into the indexed image and viola! No outline! But you still may have to do a bit of editing depending on the sprite and its pallete...

Hoped this helped some people and sorry if it's a little unclear =)

I'm not sure if this has been asked before but:

I did not need to do the whole free space finder since I used Pichu and I guess it doesn't need space or whatever,

I still remembered to export the palette too and it's evident in the colors,

Although what remains is a small blue outline, similar to the color I used as a background,

If there's any more information I should add just ask
Thanks in advance :)
