[TUT]Mapping...

1. Prolog
2. A little info
3. Routes
4. Towns
5. Caves/Mountains
6. Ended word

1. Prolog
I'll show you here my way to map ;)

2. A little info
... when you map, you have one rule you have to show:
- A map is like a pizza, you need several things on it, mountains, trees, some water, and houses.

And, you have to make new blocks like this:
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Tiles.PNG

3. Routes
Thanks to Blackvolution for the pictures in this piece.
Lets start with the route.
At begin we make a map: 40x40, my standart, and make a border at the map:
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Routen%20Bild%201.PNG
After that we think about, how to come into the map, and how to go out. At the most of my maps, I have a
begin of a way at the entrance, but this mustn't be.
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Routen%20Bild%202.PNG
Now make a mountainline, and a house on the map, but think about the space, that the hero see.
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Routen%20Bild%203.PNG
Puh, now give the route a shape:
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Routen%20Bild%204.PNG
Yes, you can set grass, take the grass tile, and go aimless through the map.
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Routen%20Bild%205.PNG
Now it looks nice, but so unspektacular, do you agree?
How is it with flowers? Set the flowers, a diagonal patter is nice, a line is horrible...
Dont forget the bushes and other decoration:
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Routen%20Bild%206.PNG
For the end, give the map the last shape, set trees one more time.
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Routen%20Bild%207.PNG

4. Towns
Now my pictures :)
In the mapping are towns and routes the same, make a border, the entrances, and the shape.
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Dorf%20Bild%201.PNG
Now the difference between towns and routes, the houses, normal, center and market, if you want a
gym too, but look that the houses don't stay in a line:
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Dorf%20Bild%202.PNG
Now place a sea, a way, a mountain...
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Dorf%20Bild%203.PNG
...flowers...fences...decoration!
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Dorf%20Bild%204.PNG
Something is missing... there are so many empty spaces...trees?!
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Dorf%20Bild%206.PNG

5. Caves and mountains
Juchu, a new thing, lets start ;)
Caves:
Start like a route, with the border:
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/H%f6hle%20Bild%201.PNG
Now give the map a shape, and place entrances.
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/H%f6hle%20Bild%202.PNG
After that the decoration, water, stones and so on^^.
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/H%f6hle%20Bild%203.PNG
Special, make many many stones, and big stones too!
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/H%f6hle%20Bild%204.PNG
Finished :)

Mountains:
Now one of the hardest things in mapping, the mountains.
Start with the first layer of the mountain.
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Berg%20Bild%201.PNG
Now the next, and next layer...
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Berg%20Bild%202.PNG
After that the little things, stairs, stones, grass like in the routes...
http://haefele.ha.funpic.de/Romhacking/TUT/Mapping/Berg%20Bild%203.PNG

6. Ended word
I hope this tut is good, at RhW the user love it xD.

*offtopic* how did you make those "show content" then the hide content buttons?
as opposed to
hidden content?

oh
nevermind
*fillerfillerfiller*
This is off topic but this thread (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=170883) should help you.

Anyways, you (haefele) need to work on your tree shadows. This tutorial (http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/6761/treeshadowtutjg8.png) helped me out a lot.

I like the layouts, however you don't really explain "how to map", you just show pictures of the steps you did. Also, you need to work on your shadows.

Wow. Thats all I can say, stunning as It Is.
I can tell you that this has taught me a few things, such as how to map good caves.
The part on mountains was very good, and a few of your maps, had border errors.

And the tree shadows were poorly done. But this turorial is better than neti's.
Joke.

Well please make one on how to map the sea, and inside houses.

Good luck. ;)

The cave mapping is very useful for me, seeing as how I suck at mapping them! XD

You've really have grown here since I've last talked to you. And I'm going to have to disagree with cooley and Buizel 9. This may be useful for beginners who understand how to use Advance Map. If the follow this, it could help them improve, with better shape, and everything. (Lets hope they don't make the same maps! XD).

Anyways, great tutorial, haefele~

Nice tut it was very helpful.
Especially the cave part.I have always troubles when i try to make caves.
Do you also have tips for in houses?

haefele
March 15th, 2009, 09:57 PM
Hehe, houses are so funny.... i hate them, they are so bored.
But here a few tips:
-make other borders, not everytime the same
-if you have the first step, set around the table, everytime a other position

Sorry but i haven't more^^

Very nice tutorial! I agree that it works best for someone who already has some mapping knowledge, like where you say to think about the space that the hero sees. A complete beginner might not fully understand how border blocks work yet or know how many tiles to the left, right, top, and bottom you can see in GBA around the hero. But for mappers that know the basics, this is a good tutorial.

Good work on this. :D

How do you add tilesets

Please respond

Responding. You're welcome.

This isn't the place to ask, kid. Try the "Simple Questions" thread. It's for questions that are simple. The title might have thrown you off, since you probably didn't expect a thread with a title like "Simple Questions" to be a place where you ask simple questions. Now you know.

This is a tutorial on how to make maps, not insert tilesets.

Ok how would I do this? I'm trying to make a cave In the middle of route one. I made the entrance already, but how do you make it so you don't walk on top of your cave? And How do I edit the inside after I make the entrance to the cave from route 1?

Once you actually finish your map, (In Advance Map, right?) Then you should go to the tab that says "Movement Permissions View." All purple blocks with "C" on them mean that it's an open space for you to move around freely. The red block with "1" on it would be what you would use for a wall. Place the "1's" over the cave you made (Just not the small hole you'd enter the cave through), and it should be solid.

And to edit the inside, if you've already put a Warp on the cave's entrance, you can just follow the warp to get to the map you'd like to use as a cave. If you haven't put a warp yet, or don't know how, I'm sure there's tutorials around somewhere for it. But you can still edit whatever Map you'd like to use as the cave's interior by either finding one used by the game, or making one from scratch.

You need to change the border tiles.
(Up in the top-right corner, above all of your tiles, there should be a 2X2 square, just make that the right kind of tree (The kind with another tree above and below it) and this problem will be over.)

Quick question.
I'm not sure if I made this up in my mind or something, but is there a tool in Advance Map that you can make something like a tree once, and you can place that tree with a click, instead of tile by tile. (When I think about it, I thought it was called "Big Block Editor" or something). But yeah, is there such thing as that, and if so, how do you access it.

[Sorry for sounding like a total fail right there, but I'm trying to get back into mapping.]

Hold the control Key, and click-drag across the tiles you want to use.
(Easiest if you build one tree in the map, and then just select it, and paste it wherever you need it.)

First off, yeah, border problem, you already noticed it, I take it you know how to fix that.

For the warping problem, you can't use warps on those particular tiles.
(You'll notice in the block editor, on a tile that you CAN warp on, (Like the red rug that indicates a door when leaving a building.) Have the parameter "Arrow down => warp under block".
This tells the game that THAT tile, should display a down arrow, and to use the warp.

You would have to make a new tile (Just copy the one you want the warp to be on onto a blank tile.) And have it set to "Use warp" (Unless you want it to have an arrow display, then just choose one with the arrow...)

Ok, thanks for the tip on the warp issue.

But the border problem is really weird since it is black on the side but during game-play I get that weird blue colour. =[

Ok, thanks for the tip on the warp issue.

But the border problem is really weird since it is black on the side but during game-play I get that weird blue colour. =[

The reason it does that is because you are telling the game to use a completely transparent tile, so it does not know what to do.
If you want a completely black tile, you will have to make one out of some pure black blocks in the block editor. (There are many transparent ones, it is YOUR job to tell which are which.)

You shouldn't use black borders anyway. 8D

Houses use a different tile which actually has a black block.

I don't if this is why but, I mixed 2 different tile sets, one from a gym (23 or something) an also 0.

After I changed the 1st one to 0, the border got messed up as shown in the image...

I beg to differ, in my opinion, the dimensions of the map aren't what is important, by square, people usually mean that the overall design of the map looks too blocky, or square. (Fire Red's Route 1 for instance)

So long as the design of the level is good everything should be good as well.

no tutorial to create a forest :(

I wouldn't say anything about this, but still, a forest is typically a route without houses or much mountains. Make it fully grassy and lots of trees around them. Not mountains but caves are acceptable :P .

ok two questions
1 how do you put the trees water and other stuff in the map? like what program or whatever?
2 how do you put it in the rom???

The program used can be EliteMap or AdvanceMap, preferably LU-HO's AdvanceMap since its easier to use... just change the map with the blocks at the right and click "File --- Save" and its done. You might think "why wasn't that explained in the tutorial?" Read what's below to find out.

About the "tut"... yeah its nice, but not for beginners. Here are a few reasons why:
It does not say anything about warps.
Movement permissions are not explained.
Nothing is said about weather etc.

I understand why as well, this tutorial's target is to make your maps natural and fabulous but not the gameplay effects. It focuses on the way you should map, not how it comes when you play.

Sorry if this has been said earlier, but you forgot to add that "GYM" signpost in front of the gym in the "towns" section of the tutorial.

This tutorial helped me a lot, a huge thanks to the owner of this thread.
