Photograph of the ????
Discussion Thread
Like it's signature producing counterpart this thread is for discussing the (creation of a) photograph competition in this section.
Things we need to think about include:
The frequency of this competition
Rules (clone copy of signature of the week?)
And whatever else you can think of
I guess we can discuss now! XD

I'd prefer weekly myself, I think that's plenty of time to be able to set up and shoot a photo.
However POTFuN does have a nice ring to it. xD

Weekly sounds good. It shouldn't take a month or so just to take a picture and take five minutes to strengthen the resolution in Photoshop or something.
Rules
No stealing of pictures!
Don't be rude.
Be respectful.
Just some key rules right there.
Tiny
April 13th, 2009, 02:30 AM
think it should be weekly
and unlike tags i think the photos should be uploaded to deviant art and linked from there preferably
im pretty sure most of you have one
just my opinion

This is up faster than I expected. We need some very specific rules on how much we can Photoshop the pictures.
Comic Tragedy
April 13th, 2009, 03:14 AM
This is what I came up with for editing rules.
do not add anything to you're picture
try to keep actual editing to small touchups (lens dust problems, etc.)
try to keep adjustment layers to minimum
you may not add aditional lighting (ie. with a brush, or whatever)
Plus, I think it will be really obvious if some stupid kid decides to go all out on photoshop and screw around with his photo. There should be a disqualification rule about that, because sadly I think alot of people would still vote for him/her.

I for one hate deviant art, uploading takes way too long.
Also, you say you can't add anything to your picture but what about my entry for the Doctor Who SoTW?

I think a simple edit like that is pushing the limits, but not exactly breaking them. Maybe we should pick one designated person to review all the entries and decide what breaks the rules and what doesn't.
THIRTY-SIX
April 13th, 2009, 05:27 PM
That's usually done by whoever hosts it and a few well known graphic designers. Was in sotw entry rules last time I read them. xD
SoTW #52 - DOGS (Manga)
The winner of SoTW #50 - Set Stock was Tiny (http://www.pokecommunity.com/member.php?u=126619).
Please congratulate them in their profile rather than flooding this thread.

Rules:
Limit: one entry per person.
Your entry must be relevant to the current theme. Myself, and other members of the graphics community will be the judge of how well your entry relates, if ever it's relevancy should come into question.
You may edit your banners once you submit them.
You may not enter if you chose the theme.
All entries must be made during the SoTW time period. Previously made banners will be disqualified.
Good luck to all contestants, and please post any SoTW questions, feedback, etc in the SoTW Discussion Thread (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=129788).
It'd have similar rules.
Comic Tragedy

We can basically make a new rule saying esentially the same thing but instead of getting off theme "editing your photo too much".
Or something along those lines XD
Tiny
April 13th, 2009, 10:31 PM
i think the only thing you should be able to do with the photo is edit it with a few adjustments and or make it b/w
putting 2 pictures together shouldnt be allowed

Personally, I think we should just take the picture and don't even play with it.
Let the 'original' picture win by itself.

April 14th, 2009, 07:10 AM
I agree with JD however I like the idea of putting it in black and white using Photoshop.
I think editing should be the very bare minimum. What Josephine did, in my opinion is too much of an edit.

April 15th, 2009, 05:16 AM
Maybe we should restrict edit limits to changing to B&W/Sepia/etc, and Curves and Levels?
And what about a watermark? A small, logo type image somewhere in the corner that doesn't take the focus away from the image?

So when is this going to get started? [/anxious]

About the rules I would just like to say having no changes to the photo is not a great idea because resizing/scaling maybe important for those who have cameras that take very large pictures, so that I think is a definite exception, apart from that I don't agree with too many effects.
dolce.
April 19th, 2009, 11:06 PM
Maybe you guys should just have it so that all you can do is make color adjustments to the pictures. Oh and resize, like everyone else said...?
And you should put some size restrictions, because my camera's pictures end up being like, 10000 x 10000. :( Just incase there are big, blown up pictures for entries...
True Reign
April 19th, 2009, 11:19 PM
Let's start this in maybe a week or so? That can give us enough time to decide who will host it for the first time, who will make sure each canidate will fit the theme, etc.

...no changes to the photo is not a great idea because resizing/scaling maybe important for those who have cameras that take very large pictures...Oh come on, Nobody's going to disallow re-sizing. T_T
And you should put some size restrictions, because my camera's pictures end up being like, 10000 x 10000. Anyone will half a brain will know to be sensible with the resolution of their photos.
However I suggest that the image you post in the entry thread is also a link to the photo in it's original resolution, that's what I'll be doing.
-;4562296']That can give us enough time to decide who will host it for the first time, who will make sure each canidate will fit the theme, etc.CT's hosting, and is till he decides to throw in the towel.
As for the editing front, I think you guys are being a little strict, simple editing and re-touching should be allowed IMO.

PoTW #1 -
This is the first PoTw, good luck to every entrant from here on end.
Description:
[I]Rules:
Limit: one entry per person.
Your entry must be relevant to the current theme. Myself, and other members of the graphics community will be the judge of how well your entry relates, if ever it's relevancy should come into question.
Your entry cannot be edited (with any photo editing program) past a light amount of adjustment layers and of course cropping/resizing. Myself, and other members of the graphics community will be the judge of whether you have enhanced your photo too much, if ever it should come into question.
It is a requirement to post a link to the original picture before it was edited.
You may change your entry after you have submitted once. Only, of course, before the deadline.
[I]You may not enter if you chose the theme.
All entries must be made during the PoTW time period. Previously made photos will be disqualified.
Good luck to all contestants, and please post any PoTW questions, feedback, etc in the PoTW Discussion Thread (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=175143).
So this is obviously only a mock first entry thread, the rules really suck seeing as I basically copied the relevancy rule for the editing one...
Feedback is GREATLY appreciated, I'm sure you will all have lots (and hopefully fast). I wan't to get this thing rolling.
Gummy
April 29th, 2009, 02:19 AM
Maybe make it a requirement to post a link to both the original photo and to the enhanced one (only if you've enhanced it, of course)?

Counterfeit

Shoot's all done. :]
Sepia/B&W etc allowed, yes?
Gummy
May 7th, 2009, 08:19 PM
Seeing as nothing is taken out or added to the picture, it should be acceptable. I wanted to take a picture of a garden, but the heavy rain killed EVERYTHING in my neighborhood. So yeah, took a few pics and now choosing which to enter.
dolce.
May 7th, 2009, 10:37 PM
So the only color adjustments allowed are B&W and Sepia? (Other than like, levels and curves and contrast and such)
Things like enhancers aren't allowed? (Selective Color, Hue/Saturation?)
Gummy
May 7th, 2009, 10:48 PM
I think its all about common sense. You can use Selective Color to strengthen a specific color, but I think it would be unfair to use it to completely change a color (for example, changing all the yellows in your picture to a vibrant magenta).
And with that, a suggestion for a new rule:
Colors can only be changed into colors of the same type, meaning cool colors can only be changed into other cool colors, and warm only into warm.
I'll leave it up to you guys to decide whether this is fair or not.
Comic Tragedy
May 8th, 2009, 12:14 AM
I still think editing that far is strange. How about:
The nullification, intensification, and change in hue of color in a photo is permitted to a point. Once again, myself and other members of the graphics and photography community will be the judge whether this should come into question.
Gummy
May 8th, 2009, 04:22 AM
In other words, all color enhancements are out? Then I, and maybe Joe, will have to resubmit out entries.
If color enhancements are against the rules, then we might as well ban any type of editing done to an image other than resizing. Really nothing more basic about Photoshop than tampering with colors.
Disregard. xD
dolce.
May 8th, 2009, 04:32 AM
I... I think Comic Tragedy means more like, we can't go off with +100 Saturation, but if we want to brighten the colors a little, we can still use saturation? Because some cameras just don't take colors very well... [/mine being one of them]
Gummy

I've done extensive research into it, but it can't be acheived with just CSS, needs to be accompanied by javascript. :[

I think for POTW #2, and maybe even #3, we should have themes that are a bit easier for your average Joe (no pun intended).

But wouldn't not stickying it mean photography isn't as important than signatures; when in fact your more likely to build a portfolio of photographs than signatures?
... I don't... understand the significance of that argument. xD;
The only reason why I'm not stickying it is because we have too many stickies already, and photography has never been a huge thing in this section. Nothing to do with which one is "more important" than the other, but rather letting it have a little test run first.
THIRTY-SIX
May 16th, 2009, 06:48 AM
What I was saying is that you might as well call this section sigs and avatars. You don't really see any other graphical communication here.
Plus having more stickies might push forward the idea for a competition section, and not just for s/potw.
