View Full Version : Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Starter Kit
Crazyninjaguy
August 24th, 2009, 12:44 PM
While i've been looking around the forums, im not seeing many Mystery Dungeon games around the site, so i've decided to make my own starter kit for RMVX!
Basically, this kit will have everything you need to create your own mystery dungeon games in rmvx, and maybe at some point, rmxp.
My question is, would anyone use it?
I mean i would, thats why i'm making it lol

Progress so far:
Tiles - 20%
Music - 100% (Will distribute without music)
Sprites - 1%
Scripts - 25%
Sound Effects - 0%
Random data (attacks etc.) - 0%
I will distribute the project without music, because it bumps up the project size by about 380mb. Eventually, i will get all the music in MIDI format which will decrease the filesize dramatically.
But yeah, would anyone use this starter kit if i released it?

A note on Scripting:
If you want to start learning how to script for RMXP or RMVX, i have written a series of tutorials on my site.
You're welcome to come and look through them and start learning :D

Depends. I RM in my spare time (though nothing I'd be willing to share.) If you can actually pull it off, then, yeah. I'd use it. I'm sure a few others would, too.
But, it doesn't seem like you're very far, yet. Admittedly, I haven't posted here much, but it seems lackluster to post without at least some sort of sample or preview. If you can actually get some screenshots (or even better, a beta or even an alpha, so people would know you're serious), that might get you more followers.

Ok, well i'll keep working on it for today, and i'll take some screenies for everyone to see tommorow :D

August 24th, 2009, 02:24 PM
I don't see anything wrong making a mystery dungeon kit.
I would use it if you are able to pull this off, since I was planning on making a game like it.
One question, are you going to script a battle system so that the view and moves set are like mystery dungeon as, it does need to have some sort of sub script for the battle view.
Wish you good luck.
Crazyninjaguy
August 24th, 2009, 02:51 PM
Well i'm planning on making it as close to the official games as i can.
It'll take some work, but i'm pretty sure i can do it ^^

August 24th, 2009, 03:05 PM
If I can finish off learning some scripting I might try make some parts of a battle system :)
Kinda hard learning it though.
Crazyninjaguy
August 24th, 2009, 03:25 PM
Yeh but it gets easier lol.
I can just write it pretty much fluently now, i started learning by editing scripts, then writing small windows and stuff.
But i've written some tutorials on RGSS if anyone wants to start learning.
You can find them on my site here: http://www.planetdev.gigaspace.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=96

Sorry for the double post, but i'm updating so figured it was ok...
Anyways, first post has been updated with screenshots, and i'm getting somewhere with the tiles finally.
I have most of the autotiles done, im just adding in all of the extras. Most of the default RMVX tiles will be available, but they will be just random ones in a heap of PMD tiles.
Also, scripting is going well, as i've made the two title screens, well 3...and i've made a start on the battle system.
Admittedly, there isn't much to show in the screenshots by way of scripts, so you'll just have to take my word for it :)

looks cool this looks good even though i didnt like these games (when your pokes) id still play this 1 though

Just looking at the 3rd screenshot don't you think mudkips a bit small in comparison to the buildings?
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 08:37 AM
Yeh that mudkip is just my testing sprite, i'm making the sprites so they have more than the default 3x4 frames, so all sprites pictured in the screenshots will be edited soon :D
Plus, the Pokemon Square is done by way of parallax mapping.
If you dont know what that is, then its where you load a parallax into the editor, and place passability tiles where the player cant walk etc.
As well as having lots of Parallax maps already made for you, i will be making tilesets so that you can create your own maps.
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 08:43 AM
So you are saying thats really a picture as the map?

August 25th, 2009, 09:00 AM
I am definitely supporting this project. I was actually trying to make a Mystery Dungeon game...but I gave up lol. Just a thought, shouldn't you use PMD2 graphics instead of PMD1? In my opinion they look better, and more up to date.
Edit: Sadly...the only thing I don't like about it is that its for RMVX...
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 09:29 AM
@mosssky - yeah thats a picture as the map :)
@Soul.//Silver - Thanks for your support ^^, the only thing is, if i made this kit for XP, i would have to make all the parallax maps into actual tilesets, and that could take up to a week just to get a few to the right size. Oh and yes, i will be putting PMD2 graphics in as well as PMD1, just so that there's pretty much everything for you guys :D
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 09:31 AM
Thats it im decided im gonna support this project i have always prefered PMD to the other games.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 09:35 AM
Woo! my first actual supporter lol.
By the way guys, if any of you are good at making graphics or sprites etc. i could really use the help to get all the sprites done.
The sprites have to be in the standard RMXP format(4x4 frames).
So thanks to anyone who helps, and if your work is included in the project(which it probably will) i will of course put your names in the credits list.
Hopefully i'll be able to update you all later with screenshots of the menu ^^
Soul.//Silver
August 25th, 2009, 09:57 AM
Ah, then that sucks. Guess I'll get RMVX when I decide to make a Mystery Dungeon game. I don't really mind, gives me for options for making RPGs
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 10:02 AM
Tbh, i like rmvx better, it seems smoother to me when you run it.
Although it does have some event commands missing that were in XP, you can easily remedy that with a script by someone, cant remember who :/
Anyways, UPDATE :D
I'm starting to make the tiles now, these include:
Huts,
Trees,
Water,
Aaand some random objects :P
So expect some more screenies later :D

I have a few of the PMD2 buildings by themselves but they are not resized yet as i can't do resizing. I added the Kecleon shop as an attachment.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 10:18 AM
Thanks! Thats a great help!
I'll just go add that into the tileset now ^^
If anyone else has anymore PMD resources, please 'donate' them. Atm, i'm getting all my stuff from The Spriters Resource, which is good, but they dont have everything...
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 10:21 AM
As i said before i have more... So here they are as attachments but again they are not resized.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 10:47 AM
Thanks again! Wow!
Yeah these shouldn't be too hard to put in the tileset, as they're pretty small.
Whereas, a whole parallax map to put in a tileset would take ages lol.
Again, thanks for your help!

I have an animation capter software if thats any useful for getting some of the sprites you want e.g. attacks, scenes ect.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 02:22 PM
Hmmm i dunno, could be useful.
I guess i could play them using a script in the game, hmm, if i think of anything i might need it for i'll drop you a PM, thanks :D
UPDATE!
First post updated with yet ANOTHER screenshot!
This time its of the menu, its not completely finished, like i need to add the badge icon and the mapname, but it's getting close ^^

Waaay ahead of you lol, i've got them all :P
Thanks for the offer though :D
Next Script = Item Screen
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 02:27 PM
In that case is there anything i can get you?
EDIT: If it does help i have the PMD2 strategy guide which has tons of info on moves and items etc.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 02:31 PM
Hmmm, the moves would be helpful :D
At the moment, just for Mudkip because he's like the tester pokemon :P
Thanks again for your help!

Information on moves (all or few) or movesets for pokemon?
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 02:38 PM
Just movesets for Pokemon please, as i said im Using Mudkip as a base just to show people what to do with the kit at the moment, but once i've finished all the scripting, i can start to add in all of the moves.
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 02:42 PM
Gulp... Realises there are 186 pages of moversets...

Its ok lol,
If possible, i'd just like Mudkip's moveset and the levels it learns them.

Btw your tutorial you posted earlier has helped out alot.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 04:18 PM
Ah about the scripting?
Glad to know they actually help :P
I'll be writing more as i go on so look out for them, eventually i'm gonna write tutorials all the way up to creating your own menu system, and once you've learnt that, you're away and can script almost anything :P
Also, first post updated with an improved menu shot.
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 04:27 PM
Im liking the menu! I soon won't notice the difference between it and the real thing!
Unrelated: One of the scripts in your tuts don't work.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 04:29 PM
Hmmm which one would that be?
I'll need to fix it so other people can actually learn lol.
Thanks for pointing it out.
And i'm just about to start the item screen after i've made another windowskin for it :P
carmaniac
August 25th, 2009, 04:33 PM
Yeah the tutorial helped me out make windows, only thing I have to work out is making the menu.
Edit:
I did notice one of the scripts didn't work also but I can't remember which one.

August 25th, 2009, 04:35 PM

@ger = 'ger'
@badger = @bad @ger
p @badger
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 05:01 PM
Ok thats all fixed up now ^^
It was supposed to read:
@bad = 'Bad'
@ger = 'ger'
@badger = @bad + @ger
p @badger
Thanks for pointing it out :P
Anyways, i think my last script for today will be the Item Screen, i think it's gonna be a challenge...
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 05:06 PM

Also have you done the personallity quiz at the begining of the game? I was just wondering as i would not mind doing it as im very bored with very little to do nowadays.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 05:09 PM
Yeh by all means do it!
I havnt done much in the way of eventing, well nothing at all because i've been scripting :/
But yeah have a go if you think you can do it, and just send me the project after you've finished :)

Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 05:26 PM
Well i'm getting all the stuff from Blue Rescue Team on my DS, and it's called Team Toolbox A and B on there so i just used that.
Remember this is a base for people to create their own mystery dungeon games so a simple edit will sort it all out :)
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 05:29 PM
Ok, Thing is im getting my info from my PMD2 Strategy Guide (400 pages!). And in PMD2 its called a treasure bag.
Edit: In the Kit are choices like in the original or in the text box like in RMVX?
carmaniac
August 25th, 2009, 05:35 PM
Remember in PMD2 youare in a guild that explores places and in PMD you are a rescue team so it all depends on what one you are making it from.

Hopefully, i'm gonna be able to script them like the original so they're out of the boxes, like you see in the official pokemon games.
It'll take some work, but i think i can do it :)
EDIT: You're making the event :P
Just make it how you think it should be, it'll get changed by people who download the kit anyway.

As far as the personality test goes, can you, maybe include an optional script where you simply choose your Pokemon? Or possibly even a character creator?
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 05:56 PM
Hmmm, just choosing the Pokemon shouldn't be too hard, i'll add that in my To-Do list of scripts :)
Thanks for the idea!
The character creator however, would be a little more difficult, and more resource intense, as the creator of the game would have to make as many variations of one sprite as they have equipment or colours etc.
And not many people would want to sprite that much.
I can however give it a go for you :)
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 06:00 PM
But there shall always be the quiz. As i feel its a signature mystery dungeon feature.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 06:02 PM
Yeh of course, and you're spending your time making it :)
The other script will be optional.
I have to go and eat something now, i'm damn hungry lol.
I won't be back on later, as i've been on the PC since i woke up :/
But i will be back tommorow.
@mosssky - When you've finished the quiz, can you upload it and send me the link via PM? Thanks :)
dream's-epilogue
August 25th, 2009, 06:03 PM
If teh creator will be too much effort, don't worry about it. There are other ways to do that.
Yes, but the test can be irritating, since a lot of people just want a certain species. Maybe afterwards, if you don't like the result, you can change your Pokemon?
Rassalon
August 25th, 2009, 06:11 PM
Sure i can try and add that to the end of the quiz. My RGSS is not that good i have to use events most of the time.
Crazyninjaguy
August 25th, 2009, 08:26 PM
Heya, i said i wouldn't be back tonight but i am lol.
No update right now as i just got back from being out with my friends :P
But yea, being able to change your pokemon if you dont like it is a good feature, i always hated the way i got a machop or something :/
@mosssky - When i'm not scripting for the starterkit, i'll be writing more of the RGSS tutorials, so if you read them your RGSS will get better :D

Rassalon
August 26th, 2009, 09:36 AM
If there wen't random dungeons (mystery dungeons) it wound't really be pokemon mystery dungeon would it? It would be 'pokemon not so random dungeons'.
Crazyninjaguy
August 26th, 2009, 11:26 AM
Well another reason i'm doing the kit on RMVX is that there is a random dungeon feature for maps.
So yea, probably no updates for today seeing as i just woke up and it's 12:00am...
Maybe expect something by tonight :)

I did try converting that once lol, but failed because of some sort of tilemap issue :P
UPDATE!
A new parallax map!
And the item screen!
They're both in one screenshot so easy to see lol.
Check the first post in the Menus spoiler ^^
At the moment, i've only managed to make it so the player can have 10 items at once.
I'll keep working on it so that i can display another 10 on Team Toolbox B.
Rassalon
August 26th, 2009, 04:47 PM
Yet again a job well done crazyninjaguy!
One extra thing. Is there a way of comparing varibles (ones built into RMVX) to see which one has the highest value?
Crazyninjaguy
August 26th, 2009, 04:48 PM
Hmmm, not sure, i'll have a playabout and get back to you on that :)
Hows the Personality test coming?
Rassalon
August 26th, 2009, 04:52 PM
The tests coming on fine looks bit complicated (maybe as it is evented) but i will adds some comments in it for people to potentialy understand it better.
Just remembered this as well you know the pokemon message system in pokemon essentials for RMXP is compatible with RMVX. Just thought i would let you know.
Crazyninjaguy
August 26th, 2009, 05:00 PM
Hmmm, i might consider putting in poccil's message system. It's almost exactly what i want.
I'll give it a shot :)
Anyway, i've made an event to compare variable values, here it is: http://www.mediafire.com/?zdi2zk4y4bj
I take it you have the RMVX RTP installed right?
Rassalon
August 26th, 2009, 05:02 PM
I have RMVX + RTP, RMXP + RTP, Game Maker, Sphere, Registered DS Game Maker. I have the lot.
Edit: Thanks for the example im going to use it to help me calculate which pokemon your going to be after you have answered the questions.
Crazyninjaguy
August 26th, 2009, 05:05 PM
Lol nice.
Ok well that event i made, basically, it gives the two variables a value for the purpose of testing, then checks if one's value is higher than the other in the separate conditional branches, and tells the player which variable has a higher value :)
Rassalon
August 26th, 2009, 05:23 PM
I just thought in the screenshot of the menu how can you have 215 rescue points and 10poke whern you havn't developed a way of getting them?
Crazyninjaguy
August 26th, 2009, 05:25 PM
I just jammed in those values to show.
I'll be adding that in later ;)
Forgot to explain that lol
EDIT: Except for the money of course :P
I just have to add a few small tweaks to make rescue team points.
Crazyninjaguy
August 27th, 2009, 07:34 AM
Well its update time again! :D
Ok here goes.
I've managed to script rescue team points in now, so thats all working.
I've put all the pokemon that you find in pokemon square into one charset for easy use.
And i've resized some of the parts on the Pokemon Square map to allow for charsets.
Up next: The Team option in the menu.
Then: The shop screen.

August 27th, 2009, 08:40 AM
Is wonder mail in this starter kit? If so, adding a random wonder mail like in PMD2 is through scripting, right?
Crazyninjaguy
August 27th, 2009, 09:43 AM
Hmmm, i could add Wonder mail, i hadn't thought of it, but i'll think of a way to implement it :)
Poeman
August 27th, 2009, 01:06 PM
For wonder mail allow people to obviously input their own like the real game, but also have it so you can decide to download in game a text file which could contain many wonder mails and display them on a list.
So like a text file with:
[HALP MER]
daj n21 9ja
hf0 mna p1k
[HALP MER2]
ea2 n21 fjy
120 m7a 32k
Would display to the player:
Which wonder mail would you like to dwonload?
[HALP MER]
[HALP MER2]
Crazyninjaguy
August 27th, 2009, 01:08 PM
Hmmm, good idea :)
I'll add that little bit into my To-Do list ^^

But i should be able to fix it all up soon :D

I know it's a bit like "Oh, more of the same..." But these things have to be done, or everything would stay unfinished!
It's a bit early for this, but i'm gonna start needing a few testers soon.
Carmaniac and mosssky, i'm giving you two first refusal as you've both done something for the project.
So if you want to be a tester, then just reply here and i'll add you to the list :D
Anybody else, i'll need 3 more people, so get those places filled people!

Refusal? And yes can i be a tester?
Crazyninjaguy
August 27th, 2009, 04:57 PM
It meant either you could be one or not lol
But yeah of course you can, i just asked you lol.
Well pretty much, once i've got the menu completely finished, will be when the first demo comes out. :)
Still debating whether or not to encrypt it, i mean its not in a useable state yet, so there'd be no point in anyone having it unencrypted, though having it encrypted would implie that i never want to release it, which i do.
Meh, i'll leave it unencrypted lol, at least that way you could see how some of the scripts work and stuff.
I admit my scripting won't be the cleanest in the world, but hey, if it ain't broke, dont fix it!

@Crazyninjaguy I thought i would ask you this as you are the best scripter i know. But is there a way to compare RMVX variable in a script to find which ones the highest. As im having trouble comparing 18 RMVX variables in an event to find the highest.
Crazyninjaguy
August 27th, 2009, 06:37 PM
Do you mean like this?
@monkey = 1
@badger = 2
if @monkey >= @badger
print 'Monkey is the highest'
end
if @badger >= @monkey
print 'Badger is the highest'
end
Or a game variable?
Rassalon
August 27th, 2009, 06:44 PM
What i mean is a variable in RMVX. Is there a way of comparing them in a script?

I'm learning coding this year, and I'm a fan of both PMD and VX, so...I wouldn't mind being a tester. How would you do it? Get me the stuff to test, I mean? (I don't have VX installed atm, so should I re-install it?)
Crazyninjaguy
August 27th, 2009, 07:26 PM
Ok you're in :)
In your case, i'll just give you a copy of the project with all the graphics and music needed, and you could just go round the project seeing if there are any bugs in the scripts or anything.
@mosssky - I'll get back to you on that one :)
carmaniac
August 27th, 2009, 07:33 PM
I'll be a tester too, I'm quite familiar with RMVX. With looking for bugs sometimes I can't find every bug but the main ones.
Crazyninjaguy
August 27th, 2009, 07:39 PM
Ok cool :)
I just need two more testers then...
Ok, basically, when i've completely finished the menu, and anything else small, i'll release the first beta to the testers.
Then comes the hard part, the battle system :S
Rassalon
August 27th, 2009, 07:46 PM
Will it be like mystery dungeon and litteraly with 4 moves and 1 regular move?
carmaniac
August 27th, 2009, 07:49 PM
When you get to the battle system it involves a side view script that branches off from the main system, learnt this from my friend when i thought of making a MD style system.
Crazyninjaguy
August 27th, 2009, 08:31 PM
Well i'm not quite sure how i'll do it yet, but i'm sure it'll come to me when i've started :P
And yes, 4 moves and 1 normal move.

Ok, poeman and Lucarios aura are the last testers :)
Glad to have you all on board ^^One problem at the moment, i wont be able to do anything on the project until tuesday night as i'm on holiday and i leave tonight, but surely in 3 days the whole world won't lose it's sanity :PI'll be here for the rest of today, but after today, i'll see you all on tuesday :)

Unfortunately, it would seem a lot of people :/
There's like just you, me and mosssky posting in the thread.
Not that its not great, but some more support would be nice.
I'm currently working on about 7 projects at the moment so work is still being done, but at a slower rate than before.
To add to all of this, i might be starting college on monday which will take up a fair amount of my time.
But anyway, there will still be updates, stay tuned!

There'll be more soon you'll see.
Well good luck if you're going to college I still got another 2 years of school before I do college.
It is nice though to see you not giving in with this project.(despite the lack of support for something so good)

I think this is a great idea!
Just wondering, have you gotten the batle system done yet. If not I can show you Omegazonian's Roguelike Battle System [ORBS] for VX. There are a couple of bugs, like you can't remove a party member, but they could be fixed.
Also since VX's only flaw is a limited amount of tilesets you may want to use Bulletext's Multiple Tilesets script.
Can you please fix the link for the tutorials for scripting? It is broken, and I really want to be able to help.
Crazyninjaguy
October 7th, 2009, 10:33 AM
Yea i was gonna use Omegas battle system as a reference.
The tutorials link is fixed on the first page, and i'll be writing more soon.
Hmmm, i was thinking about the muktiple tilesets script, but it depends if i can fit everything in the default tiles first.
And thanks for the continued support guys ^^

Well i had a bug with saving and loading, so i started again with cleaner code, and now i'm back to where i was before.
So i'm thinking the first demo should be sometime this week.
If not then in 3 weeks cos im on holiday next week.
So yea, hopefully this week.

November 1st, 2009, 11:16 PM
Well i did release a really small demo to mosssky just to show him how i was doing, but i had to start again as i had an issue with saving and the rescue team points not saving, but, thats all fixed up now and i have shorter, cleaner code.
Please don't bug either me or mosssky for the demo as there really isnt much in it.
I've mostly been working on the systems so it looks like not a lot of progress has been made.
Stay tuned to the thread! :D

What features are already implemented?
How much graphics will come with it(I recommend not a lot so that the engine gets out sooner then maybe release a graphics pack?)
I feel the same for music.
SKills should be in 100% though
and the pokemon data themselves, but just have all the pokemon have the same graphic.
Crazyninjaguy
November 2nd, 2009, 09:54 AM
Hmm, well a graphics pack later is an idea. I share your views on the music too, but i'll include a few tracks in the first release.
Features so far:
1. Title Screen with continue, adventure log etc.
2. Menu system with items, team, options etc.
3. Extra movement frames to allow for rmxp charsets to be used in VX.
4. 8 way movement.
5. A half finished shop system.
6. Rescue team points.
So not much at the moment, but its still progress.
I'll be finishing off the shop system soon!

Crazyninjaguy

Well i was modelling it on PMD1 to begin with, now i'm doing it on PMD2, so i guess just adding those couple of extra things wont hurt.

November 3rd, 2009, 03:49 PM
Ok, I'm not sure if you need help or if I can ask for help in this but I could help you making a bank and storages, I could also make a link shop for linking moves and remembering moves. Well I'm saying it again I'm not sure if you need help, but I can make those.
Crazyninjaguy
November 3rd, 2009, 05:09 PM
Well anything to get the kit out quicker!
I take it you mean by scripting and not by eventing?
Because eventing is good if you're just making a game, but this has to be user friendly so everything has to be done by way of scripting.
But if you could that's be great :D
The only thing you'd be able to do would be the banking system at the moment as i havnt done anything to do with moves yet.
Just drop me a pm and i'll send you the gold syntaxes.
