Welcome! I am going to show you how to fully edit the Fire Red Titlescreen.
Tools Needed:
IrfanView (or suitable substitute)
unLZ.GBA
Photoshop/GIMP(you can get gimp completely free at gimp.com)
Paint (or suitable substitute)
NTME(latest version)
APE

~UPDATE~: I found out that your background TileSET width needs to be less than 256px.

To hack the titlescreen you first need to know the offsets in unLZ.GBA. I list them here.
2009- Pokémon FireRed logo (256 colors)
2010- Pokémon FireRed logo TileMap
2011- Charizard Sprite
2012- Charizard Sprite TileMap
2013- Gamefreak Copyright image
2014- Gamefreak Copyright image TileMap

This tutorial will be split into 3 parts.
Part 1: The Charizard
Part 2: The Background
Part 3: The Logo

PART 1: The Charizard

The Charizard I think is the easiest part. First off, you need an indexed sprite of the pokémon you want to insert. I will use the Platinum First-frame Latios from pe2k.com.

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/plmfa/381.png (http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/plmfa/381.png)

^This sprite^

Open the Image in IrfanView.

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/4414/capture2751.jpg (http://img24.imageshack.us/i/capture2751.jpg/)

Click [Image]->[Decrease Color Depth] and select 16 colors (4bpp)
http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/4582/capture2910.jpg (http://img190.imageshack.us/i/capture2910.jpg/)
The sprite should look the same. Now go to [Image]->[Palette]->[Edit Palette…]
Mine looks like this:
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/7079/capture3134.jpg (http://img40.imageshack.us/i/capture3134.jpg/)
For mine, all you do is edit the first color, (The one that is highlighted) make it bright green and it works fine. (With others, however, you may need to edit the palette more.)

Now, Export the Palette by going to [Image]->[Palette]->[Export Palette…] and save it as ‘latios.pal’ or something.
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/5247/capture3343.jpg (http://img24.imageshack.us/i/capture3343.jpg/)
Now save your image.

Right-click your image and select [Properties]. Go to summary, and it should look like the next image.
The only thing that matters here is ‘Bit Depth’ it MUST be 4.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/1109/capture3436.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/capture3436.jpg/)
Now you need to open up NTME. Go to [File]->[Open TileSet] and select your sprite.
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/4369/capture3801.jpg (http://img195.imageshack.us/i/capture3801.jpg/)

You ‘re going to want to select the whole image by clicking the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons in the ‘Tile Selection’ pane.
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/743/capture4034.jpg (http://img16.imageshack.us/i/capture4034.jpg/)

Click the ‘Preset Sizes’ drop-down box and select FR/LG TS.
You will want to arrange the sprite so it is on the middle right-hand side of the TileMap.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/2678/capture4206.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/capture4206.jpg/)

Now for the PaletteMap THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! You MUST cover at least the sprite in D tiles.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/5409/capture4324.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/capture4324.jpg/)

Now Goto [File]->[Save TileMap] and save it in the same directory as the sprite. Call it ‘latios.raw’ or something.

Now is the easy part. Go back to unLZ.GBA and goto 2011.
It should look like this:
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4893/capture4759.jpg (http://img268.imageshack.us/i/capture4759.jpg/)

Click ‘Import’ and select the Latios sprite.
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/1672/capture4908.jpg (http://img195.imageshack.us/i/capture4908.jpg/)

Now click ‘Write to Rom’.
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4549/capture4934.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/i/capture4934.jpg/)

Leave this alone and click ‘OK’. It should work.
Now goto 2012. And click [File]->[Load Raw…] and select your TileMap. (I saved it as latios.raw) And click ‘Write to Rom’.
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/1096/capture5121.jpg (http://img16.imageshack.us/i/capture5121.jpg/)

It’s basically the same with the first one. Just leave it alone and click OK. It should also work.
Now, leave unLZ.GBA open and open the ROM in VBA or No$gba. The titlescreen image will look wrong.
http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/3012/ts1h.png (http://img190.imageshack.us/i/ts1h.png/)

That is because we haven’t edited the Palette yet. Open APE and open your ROM. Goto ‘00EAD5E8’ (Charizard Titlescreen palette)

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8181/capture5550.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/i/capture5550.jpg/)

Click on the button in the bottom right-hand corner witht the arrow that is facing left. Select your palette.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/3153/capture0319.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/capture0319.jpg/)

If you get an error like this one:

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/475/capture5746.jpg (http://img16.imageshack.us/i/capture5746.jpg/)
Then click the spoiler

Just keep trying until you get this with an error like 'Runtime Error 13':
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/3153/capture0319.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/capture0319.jpg/)

The palette is loaded, but the application crashed. DON’T MOVE! Press Ctrl+PrintScreen on your keyboard. Open Paint. Press Ctrl+V. You should be able to see the bottom palette in your screenshot.
Now, Re-Open APE and open your ROM. Go back to 00EAD5E8 and in the bottom pane, copy the hex codes of the colors from the screenshot into the coresponding boxes in APE. Until it looks like this:
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/3153/capture0319.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/capture0319.jpg/)

Now click ‘Replace’. Then, click ‘Load’ and the palettes should be the same.
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/2866/capture0423.jpg (http://img195.imageshack.us/i/capture0423.jpg/)

Now open your ROM and it should look fine.
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/7285/capture0503.jpg (http://img40.imageshack.us/i/capture0503.jpg/)

Congratulations! You have just sucessfully edited the Pokémon sprite in the FireRed Titlescreen!

PART 2: The Background

In part 1 you learned how to edit the Charizard sprite. Now, I’m going to use the same ROM and insert a background.

BACKGROUND NOTES: When making a background, make sure that the image width and height are divisible by 8. (The width and height of a tile)

The first thing you have to do is pick a background. Be sure to get one that loks fairly well in 16 colors.

I will be using this one:
http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/7660/backgroundk.png (http://img28.imageshack.us/i/backgroundk.png/)
I got it from spriters-resource.com (In Pokémon Platinum Battle Backgrounds. Credits to klnothincomin) However, their website is down ATM, so I couldn’t pick out a better one. :(
So, I’m going to let you download it by clicking on it. (I have already indexed the image. The black tile is for transparency. NOTE: The first color of the palette is the one that the GBA will use for transparency.)

Ok. What you need to do is make a TileMap with NTME. Make sure the ‘Preset Sizes’ is ‘FR/LG TS’. Select the whole thing and add it to the TileMap. Then arrange it so it looks like this:
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1048/capture1525.jpg (http://img269.imageshack.us/i/capture1525.jpg/)
Now for the PaletteMap. THIS IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT. All the tiles must be set at ‘E’ and only ‘E’. They cannot be set at F because you will have blinking stuff all over the place. So, just set it up like this:
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1394/capture1830.jpg (http://img59.imageshack.us/i/capture1830.jpg/)
Now save the tilemap as ‘background.raw’ or something. Now insert it into the ROM by opening unLZ.GBA and going to 2013.
http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/2769/capture2136.jpg (http://img28.imageshack.us/i/capture2136.jpg/)
Now, notice that I did not add any text to the image. There is no ‘Press Start’ I have not yet figured out how to make it blink with a background yet. (With my luck, I will probably figure it out like 10 minutes after I post this tutorial.) Anyway, replace the image with the background and click ‘Write to ROM.’ The image is way to big to begin with, so remember the hex size of the image. Here is an example:
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4066/capture2451.jpg (http://img59.imageshack.us/i/capture2451.jpg/)
Remember the ‘A60’ and open your ROM in FSF. Input the ‘A60’ into the hex box in the bottom right-hand corner of the window. The other box there should show you a number value instead of hex value, In my case it’s 2656 now, copy that and place it in the ‘Needed Bytes’ box. Make sure ‘Search from the beginning of the ROM’ is selected and click Search. Mine came up with ‘71E55C’. So, I copy that hex value, and go back to unLZ.GBA.
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4599/capture2820.jpg (http://img59.imageshack.us/i/capture2820.jpg/)
Back at unLZ.GBA click ‘Write to ROM’ again and make it look like this:
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4582/capture2910.jpg (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/capture2910.jpg/)
Yeah, just leave those two zeroes alone and click OK. It should come up with something like this:
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/9175/capture3050.jpg (http://img121.imageshack.us/i/capture3050.jpg/)
Click OK. Now click Next. You should be at image number 2014.
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7986/capture3144.jpg (http://img59.imageshack.us/i/capture3144.jpg/)
Goto [File]->[Load Raw…] and select the TileMap you saved earlier. Then Click ‘Write to ROM’. If you get a size error, do the same thing that you did with the image. (It will work)

Now open the ROM in VBA. It will look like this:
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/7127/capture3531.jpg (http://img193.imageshack.us/i/capture3531.jpg/)
See those screwy tiles in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen? I still can’t figure out how to get rid of them. (But don’t worry about it)
Now for palette editing.

Open the background in IrfanView and save the palette. Then Open APE and got to offset ‘00EAE094’ and load your palette in the bottom pane.
Click Replace and then click Load and it should look like this:
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/7785/capture4512.jpg (http://img121.imageshack.us/i/capture4512.jpg/)
Open your ROM and It should look like this:
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/782/capture4545.jpg (http://img59.imageshack.us/i/capture4545.jpg/)
Now, those tiles on the bottom-left hand corner come up in all my bootscreens for some reason. I don’t know why. The same thing happens in these:
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/5117/jstitle.png (http://img10.imageshack.us/i/jstitle.png/)
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/9924/newtitle2.png (http://img182.imageshack.us/i/newtitle2.png/)
If anyone can tell me how to fix these, please notify me. I don’t think it has anything to do with NTME, but I’m not sure. I tried doing the TileMap in PTC and Cyclone too, and it still came up. If anyone has a solution to this, I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me. (Or I may come up with a solution myself)

Anyway, Congratulations! You have Successfully Edited the Background for the Fire Red Titlescreen!

I will add the rest of the tutorial later.

thanks
You change the position when making the tilemap.
For example, if DawnRyder put his Latios in the middle of the tilemap, it would have been in the middle.

Okay but i get an ugly darkrai..
i didnt used the sprite from Dp as it's not ncie..
so i load my own one and set it to 80x80
i did all the steps but when i play the game i can only see the pokemon title distorted in where i put it...
so i used my backup and made another backup(for safety)
i did the same steps and this time i load the raw on 2011(Mine is BRPE so charizard is 2010)
and the pokemon pic is there but background gone and the background colour of the pokemmon pic is greenish..
any help?

For example, if DawnRyder put his Latios in the middle of the tilemap, it would have been in the middle.

Yes, be sure to read the instructions very carefully.

xmouvelianx, you need to put the pokemon sprite instead of the Charizard. You got that right the first time. When you're editing the tilemap, you need to make sure that it is set at 32x20 or FR/LG TS in NTME.

P.S. Can you send a screenshot?

Although I already knew some of this, you just taught me how to use NTME. Yes, I know, it's stupid, but I just wasn't able to get my head around it. So thanks for that. And it's a great tutorial, anyways.
Btw, feel free to post that Background Editing bit whenever you like, (cough- anytime immediately is good):D. Haha.. Thanks again, great tut.

Well, this is a decent tutorial, however I wouldn't call it complete. You should add in how to insert text, make text or get rid of the text that is there if you have a full titlescreen like this one.
http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu99/IGavZI/Titlescreen.png
And only need to erase the background. Decent job however. Should help some people out!

the reason why there are tile glitches in the bottom-left corner, is because your tilemap is too big. ~ i experience this all the time u_u

If you have a clean rom, then you have no problem. Maybe your rom have more dumps than his.

Anyways, the background tutorial is very easy to follow. I hope you can fix the problem.

Try it again. If that doesn't work, your palette is probably corrupted. Try exporting the palette again.

@DawnRider: What is the size you prefer for the BG and the Pokemon that will replace Charizard?

I dunno if I can help but for the charizard replacement I'm pretty sure any width/height is fine if it's divisible by eight(including the background).

@UltimaZelfier: I dont' quite know what you mean by 'size' if you meant width by height I like relatively large images. But if you meant size as in bytes, the image should be in between 1 and 4 KB's.

@xmouvelianx: What old background? Are you talking about the flames?

@giradialkia: Yes, I do have an alternate method than pkmnhackersonline.com does. It requires GIMP (awesome tool) or Photoshop or you could possibly use IrfanView.

About the tiles in the corner(in the background section of your tutorial), I think you could get rid of them by colour editing them to the same colour as the section they are on. It would work for some backgrounds, but not all.

EDIT: That wouldn't work because the colours aren't in the palette o.o...
Hmmm....

Yes it would, but you don't show how to insert them, and most newbie's don't have a clue how to do it. Thethethethe's tutorial is outdated, doesn't cover repointing and doesn't use the new NTME, so I don't see any others but this one wich explains everything. So D-Trogh stop acting like your better then everyone else and try to help someone once in a while instead of only commenting.

Hm.. I got the background loaded fine, and, like you, left one Black tile for transparancy. But the wrong colour was made transparent, in the Rom- any idea how I can fix it? I haven't closed down NTME yet, so i think i'm still safe.
Edit- Nvm, I think I know what I did- the black wasn't the first colour in the palette, as it probably should have been. I'll fix it now..

I'd suggest using Irfan view to switch the pallete colours(black and the other one) around and then import into paint, switch the colours around on the image rather than the pallete, and import back into Infanview to check if it worked. It worked for me.

Why did we need ANOTHER FR/LG titlescreen tutorial?
I would've thought there were enough tutorials on this subject - -'
AND that my little video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFudFmhWlcQ) of the new NTME would be enough for people to understand how to make tilemaps.. MEH

Yes it would, but you don't show how to insert them, and most newbies don't have a clue how to do it.You're right, it doesn't.. But my 2 year old video does (although Cyclone was used hack then), so do other videos and tutorials on the net/this forum.
+ I don't see how someone can't 'have a clue how to do it', but that's just me probably. unLZ-GBA, TM, .. are basic programs every hacker should start with.Thethethethe's tutorial is outdated, doesn't cover repointing and doesn't use the new NTME, so I don't see any others but this one wich explains everything.I guess you're right.. Though, unLZ-GBA menu's + brains (+ other tutorials) should be enough.
I think we should do something about all those tutorials about the same thing. Like, only keep one up-to-date tutorial and put the others in an archive, I dunno. So D-Trogh stop acting like your better then everyone else and try to help someone once in a while instead of only commenting.I'm not better then everyone else, so it would be stupid if I acted like I was.
Why should I help? It seems to me that DawnRyder knows what he's doing.

we need this. its more detailed and thoroughly explained. the other ones weren't as well.
And also not all people are as genius as you. ^_^
I guess most (including mine) don't handle ALL parts of the tilescreen, so I can understand that some newbs want everything to be explained to them.
The reason people (at least, that's why I do it..) don't handle EVERYTHING is because if you explain one thing, they can do the rest. It's all the same process.

+ I'm not genius and I hate it when people say that.. They expect to much from me (and now I'm talking about real life, uni and such :( )

Hey, don't be so hard on D-Trogh. I learned how to do this from him. Yup. And he's the one who wrote NTME, so...Thanks for 'defending' me :) My previous comment might not have reflected this, but you're writing a good tutorial.
I still hold on to my previous message though, it's one of the many and I think we should do some cleaning on the old tutorials :) It's getting filled with the same thing over and over again ^^

Well, in the background tutorial it does.

I don't understand how to change the bit depth via Properties.

You don't. The Bit Depth is determined by how many colors are in the palette. To change the Bit Depth, go to 'Decrease color depth...' in IrfanView and select 16 colors. The '(4BPP)' stands for 4 bits per pixel. That is your Bit Depth. 4BPP is 16 colors, 8BPP is 256, and 24BPP is millions of colors.

I've got the same problem with that blocks, I know my tilemap is too big, but not how to shrink it. (Tilemap is the .raw right? I always get confused of tilemaps and tilesets and stuff =D)

So, which height and wide do I need to create a nice background?
And also, in NTME, the FR/LG TS mode, what to do with the last 2 rows? I'm not sure if I should put something in there, or if I should tile them with an "E" thingy. =D

Nice tutorial so far but I am confused with a section of part two.

"Now save the tilemap as ‘background.raw’ or something. Now insert it into the ROM by opening unLZ.GBA and going to 2013."

Then there is the image.

"Now, notice that I did not add any text to the image. There is no ‘Press Start’ I have not yet figured out how to make it blink with a background yet. (With my luck, I will probably figure it out like 10 minutes after I post this tutorial.) Anyway, replace the image with the background"

That I am confused with. Ok so if you mean import the background from the beginning. The one that has the black square on it, it says the image is not indexed and if that isn't it, i don't get what you would want to replace it with.

You open up paint use the text button to create a text at the bottom <-- Hand corner so that it will not be overlapped by the Pokemon Fire Red Logo... You can type wadeva you wan press start press thiss press taht....
Den you indexed it bla bla decrease colour depth save pallete den you go to NTME and select all and put the background into postition... Den now is the fun and easy part you cover the whole background with E's den then after that cover your text with F becoz it makes it blink!
There you have it a blinking Press Start!

Yes, It is the palette. What you need to do is have the Press Start on a solid color. (The solid color has to be one of the colors on the E palette. (I think it is #6). That way, It will blink, and the background will be left untouched.

Editing the fire is as simple as exporting it and changing the frames to what you want. I don't think there's a tilemap though, because it works a bit different than the rest of the titlescreen. And the start button? That's where you import the background too. When putting in a new background, you have to make sure you have one in the tileset, and then place it in your tilemap.

On unLZ GBA, when writing sprite to ROM everything works fine, but the moment I try to load RAW to ROM it says Compressed Size is: 154. Which is too big. Aborting.

I'd appreciate any help!

No, that's the size of the compression size. Just repoint to an offset full of free space.

Hmm, I don't see why you should have to replace the GAMEFREAK logo with the BG, the BG already exists, so we should be able to just overwrite that and then edit the GameFreak/Press Start text seperately.

Anyone know the offset of the Normal FR Background?

@Chevalier: I'm pretty sure that was explained, you have to use FSF and search for the amount of bytes that UNLz gives you when it says that the image is too big, its called repointing.

Yeah I just found that out, and that the flames are separate in the offset 141(for me) and also that you can put the pokemon, the press start logo, and the gamefreak logo all on the same layer, and then have different palette map values on the press start, pokemon, etc.

That is what I did. Result:
WELL, I cant post images, but I would show you if I could. (Had to make a new account, to avoid... someone.)

It is kind of a bummer that those blocks are messed up.

Great Tutorial!
I know the reason why those glitchy blocks are there. I'm pretty sure they appear from having duplicate tiles in the Tileset. To fix this error, download a Tool called Sphere (Its a game maker) install it and Go File -> Import -> Image to Tile set and It will generate a Tile set AND a tilemap for you. Screenshot the tileset and save it (index it aswell). NTME has a function to impoirt the Sphere TIlemaps (.rmp extension). This will allow you to create a perfect title screen!

I've been having a lot of problems, but most of my questions have already been solved just through reading this topic and thinking a little, so thanks both for the SUPERB tutorial and those that take the time to answer questions.

My APE says that error code 13 thing. But when I print screen and paste it in paint that pallet doesnt show like you said :s
Help please?

Instead of messing with that, do the following (well, worked for me anyways):

-Run APE until it gets to the Error 13 thingy. DO NOT QUIT/PRESS OK.
-Open a new text document.
-Jot down each of the 16 values in the bottom palette. Mine were
E003 7956 2F2D BF7F AD35 B418 1F6B A514
9F56 FD41 5A2D FF7F 1348 0D58 1A20 0B4C
-Then just run APE again, reload the original palette (but not your own), and instead type each of the values in the proper boxes at the bottom half. Then proceed as normal.

Hope that works :)

On a personal issue, I've gotten everything down except my sprite has a couple glitchy spots on it. What's up with that? I already removed the rom, but if I try it again I'll post a picture.

They cannot be set at F because you will have blinking stuff all over the place. So, just set it up like this:

You know, I bet that the F is used to flash the "Press Start" text, and replaces it with the transparency that was indexed. I'll take a look at the actual tilemap when I get the chance.

Is it the background palette?

The offset is 00EAE094. I have a .ini file with a lot of offsets. Just paste it into your APE folder, and look through the bookmarks.

This tutorial is awesome and very easy to follow.
Also, you can remove or replace the flames from the background if you want to.
In FireRed (U) go to 141 (or somewhere close that looks like flames) and replace the image with desired type of flames or simply overwrite it with a blank image.

Once again, awesome tutorial! Will help a lot of people! :)

You probably forgot to make the tilemap and insert it. Try that.

I found that (for me, anyway) the numbers on the tutorial for the Charizard were wrong, the tileset is at 2010 and the tilemap is at 2011. For those having issues with weird graphical glitches, try changing those two numbers instead and see if it works correctly.

I need help!
When I get to the "Import" part, it says "Image not indexed" and doesn't work.
How do I index it?

@Collen:
You index the background the same way you index the sprite in PART 1, with irfanview of course.

Collen
May 28th, 2010, 03:03 AM
I'm doing the sprite, no tthe backgroud. I already DID the infranview part.
Where can I get the REAL unLZip?
I only have the hacked version of it.

Also, I can't make the bit-deapth 4 because when I right-click the image nothing happens.

1)Maybe you didn't do the irfanview part correctly.
2)The hacked unLZ is what you use.
3)You right click on the file of the image, not the image on paint or something -_-..

how do i change the bit depth from 8 to 4????

Use Irfanview, decrease color depth to 16 colors. Or at least I think so.

Anyway, unbelievable tut. One can use the same methods for editing the Pokemon FireRed logos as well, I learned how to do that by following the same steps as the Charizard.

I followed the sprite tutorial exactly, but after putting in the sprite the screen around the sprite had lots of white dots in it. Does anyone know what is causing this, or how to fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Those white dots are caused by the Floyd-Steinberg dithering in Irfanview I think. Try unticking the "Use Floyd-Steinberg dithering" box in Irfanview when you reduce your images BPP from 8 to 4.

You know this one: (ASCII Drawing)
Colors:
O 256 Colors (8 BPP)
O 16 Colors (4 BPP)
O 2 Colors (black/white) (1 BPP)
O Custom: |15| (2-256 colors)

[ ] Use Floyd-Steinberg dithering <-- Uncheck this one!
[ ] Make grayscale image

| OK | | Cancel |

That should get rid of those dots! :)

Hey, this tutorial is really good, but there's still some problems I have.
1. When I index the giratina image to bright green, it indexes it, but it turns any black on the outline to bright green as well.
2. When I check the rom on vba after writing the sprite to the rom, the tile map appears instead. However, when I write the tilemap to the rom, there's just a glitchy space where the sprite should be.

EDIT: Now I can't even import the palette on APE.

I followed Part 1 exactly correct until the point where we test the ROM after saving the new stuff in unLZ. When I tested the ROM this was the result.

What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this?

how do u cover the picture in d's

At the bottom of NTME, there should be two tabs - TileMap and PaletteMap. You have to switch it to PaletteMap. There should also be a list of characters with a bunch of different colors next to PaletteMap. Switch that from 0 to D, and begin to click on the sprite (which should be covered in 0's when you start, and D's when you finish).

I messed up the 2012 thing now the image on the game wont come up can i fix this or do i have to start the whole rom over?
I might be able to help you - can you go into a bit more detail?

Great tutorial, especially the changing Charizard part.

One question - does the replacement sprite have to be 64 x 64? I want Professor Oak on the title screen of my hack! (The old guy don't get seen much, otherwise)

I've been trying this but every time I complete the steps, I end up with a weirdly patterned background that isn't the picture I used for the bg. I indexed the image to 16 colours but it doesn't appear, no matter what I do. How did you get the photo behind the arcanine in the first post?

Is there a way to totally revamp the graphics of FR? So that it's not just a bunch of pixels, but to were it looks more like diamond, pearl and platinum? If so, can someone tell me how? Thanks :)

I'd like to change the color of the title (Pokemon and the name of the version) in FR. unLZ-GBA says that it's at 00E84F20 but when I open up APE and load the rom, then enter that number, I get a palette with lots of reds and blacks, but none of the blues or yellows of the title. Am I doing something wrong?

The colors of the Pokemon title are in 256 colors, so loading in APE is only gonna show 16 colors.

Also, unLZ only show compressed palettes, so generally the palette loaded with unLZ isnt gonna be correct. Here is what I found with a quick search. EAB6C4 and EAB6E4 shows part of the yellows and blues but I don't think that is all of them. So you can start your search around there.

For some odd reason it wont work for me, can someone please explain to me. I went through all of the steps, and I tried it on a clean rom, the background I used was: This, I cut out the stars part of the picture http://spriters-resource.com/ds/pkmnbnw2/sheet/48188. If there's any kind of specific resolution I need to meet or something that would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and one last thing it does not tell me Ptr found at 00078AB0 or something like that, rather it just does nothing and nothing happens. This was with Pokemon Fire Red. I tried out a different image, still didn't work.

I also tried importing this picture: http://www.google.com/imgres?start=201&um=1&hl=en&rlz=1C1CHKZ_en&biw=1280&bih=631&tbm=isch&tbnid=M3hYxrXGQL-fxM:&imgrefurl=http://twitterdex.net/Cute_eevee&docid=FX86x4vHp1ICLM&imgurl=http://twitterdex.net/images/thumb/2/2b/133_Eevee_by_Skitteeh.jpg/250px-133_Eevee_by_Skitteeh.jpg&w=250&h=213&ei=TtMLUMjgH4rJ0QGy5onyAw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=263&sig=101232359596842498237&page=9&tbnh=138&tbnw=162&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:201,i:108&tx=60&ty=80

But that picture did not come out so well, infact it was glitchy, well very glitchy. The background fire animation was playing out in it's eyes which is weird. And the title screen went completely blue at the sides. The resolution I used (not sure if it matters) is 160x152 smaller or bigger I have no clue.

As long as you put in the right hex codes for the palette, this will work.

I did this with Leaf Green and had to find the right offset for that darn Venusaur palette. If anyone asks, it's 00EAD768 ! :)

Haven't done the background part yet, will do that later.

When I attempt to do the background, I get those corrupt tiles in the bottom left. I can't find an answer and I have been troubleshooting to no avail. I saw someone say they knew how, but not post it. I want to try this since he claims it will fix it, but the part that he says will really fix it; I don't understand. Use NSE for your ease.
It is very easy and time saving to use
Just click view=>start page=>navigate then look in un-Lz for the image and pallete offsets then click open, then press Ctrl+I,then load your image(must be index). On the dropbox button on the bottom right corner, choose image plus pallete.
Last thing is you need to save your pallete changes to your rom. press Ctlr+P then click "save pallete changes to rom"

And your DONE!!!!
