You'll need this (http://www.alivemedia.net/ipod-video-converter.htm) to convert the videos.
iPod supports two video formats: H.264 (up to 768Kbps, 320 x 240, 30fps) and MPEG-4 (up to 2.5Gbps, 480 x 480, 30fps).
For more info on how to do it you should check this out (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/the-complete-guide-to-ipod-video-formats-and-display-resolutions/).

I have the same iPod as you do. I use Videora iPod converter to convert movies/TV shows/music videos to mp4 format. It's such a pain to do that so I've stopped. Besides, watching a full length film on a teeny tiny screen gets to be a real eye strainer after the first 30 minutes.
