Chapter 63: Upcoming Challenge
A long pause followed but was broken when Red spoke up. “Then we’ll wait for him to resurface. If he comes out somehow, then we’ll handle him,”
Everyone cheered as he said so. Soon, all the gym leaders departed and so did Red. Toshin was still caring for his sister while Makoto was right next to him. Gold decided to stay for a while. He was still tired when he rushed here. He claimed that he heard Sakaki’s message somehow and decided to help out. Michelle and Nick volunteered and Marina followed them. They were sitting right next to me as Marina treated my wounds. They were just minor scrapes from rocks that flew around.
“So Gary, why did you leave all of the sudden?” Nick asked all of the sudden as Marina wrapped my arm in bandages.
I quickly tilted my head towards Michelle. She still had her saddened eyes but was smiling.
“I…I just wanted too…” I said solemnly.
“Weird…so you leave all of the sudden and Michelle becomes sad all of the sudden…” Nick muttered to himself.
“All done!” Marina said as she finished bandaging. “You’re lucky we arrived here on time,”
“Yeah, thanks guys!” I replied as I smiled.
Marina’s attention was quickly diverted to Silver. “So you’re Emily’s dad,” She said as she looked at Silver’s eyes. “And you’re my dad’s old rival, huh?”
Silver nodded slowly as he held Emily who was sleeping on his lap. “I guess that’s how you may put it,”
“Wow, you look so much like her,” She exclaimed. She quickly went to her father since he was sitting next to Silver.
I turned my attention to Toshin who was still tending to her sister. He was sitting right next her and held up her limp hand. Makoto was next to him; only he was standing and gazing at the horizon.
“Man, we freaked out when we couldn’t find you,” Nick said as I snapped out of my mind wandering state. “Some people did see you leave the island but they said that you left with no one. Is that true?”
I nodded slowly as my heart hammered. I couldn’t tell him the truth, can I? Am I supposed to?
“Well, what happened to Emily? The first time we thought was that she was out with you. But then people said that you were trying to find her and you left…” Nick continued as he scratched his head. Next to him was Michelle who looked solemnly to the ground. Her blue eyes looked slightly dull—not the ones that I used to see…they used to be raging with confidence.
“Dunno…I just don’t know…I guess…” I said silently. I looked on the ground and watched the dust being blown away by the light wind. “Look…before anything happens by now, I need to go to the city to get my badge.” I said all of the sudden as I rose up.
“You sure? You don’t look well to me,” Nick said as he examined my wounds. Michelle looked up at me with concerned eyes.
“Sure I’m sure!” I exclaimed as I stretched my arms but let them down immediately since I was feeling pain in them. “By the way, guys. What are you guys going to do if Gold’s leaving?”
“If you want to, we all could finish off our badges and go to the league,” Nick suggested. “We’ll stick around for a while. Then we go into the league…”
“I don’t know…” I muttered as I looked at the ground. “It’s like I don’t want to go to the league…”
As I said those words, a ringing sound came from Gold. He looked surprised as he took out a small, gray, square looking phone. “Hello?” He said after he opened it and placed it near his ear. “Crys? You sure?” He nodded as he replied. “Okay,”
He nudged Marina. “We have to go back to Cinnabar. Your mom’s panicking there,” He said in a serious tone.
“Aw, dad,” Marina said in a pleading tone. “Do we have to?”
“You’re mom’s really panicked. I couldn’t even understand what she was saying.” He stood up and stretched his arms. “So, Silver.” He said as he lent out his hand towards him. “Nice to meet you again. Hope we see each other again someday,”
Silver nodded as he shook Gold’s hand. “Maybe we’ll be seeing more later than you think,”
Gold smiled as he took out a Pokéball. “Come on, Marina!”
“Wait, dad!” She said as she took out a Pokéball and quickly skipped to me. “Give this to Marina when she wakes up, okay?” She smiled at me and handed me two steel plates. “Here. I’ve seen your Pokémon before and I think these would help. They’re metal coats. If you let some of your Pokémon hold these, they’ll be stronger,”
“Thanks,” I replied as she smiled. She then ran towards her father.
Gold released a huge dark blue Pokémon that looked as if it had wings. It floated in the air and it looked as if it has handles used for parasailing. On its wings were dozens of fish Pokémon sending out screeching sounds. Gold grabbed the handlebars as Marina sent out her Skarmory.
“Bye, everyone!” Marina said as she leapt on Alvis’ back. “I’ll be seeing all of you guys!”
At that moment, they flew off into the sky with their Pokémon. I waved back at them as they disappeared to the south. The sun was already setting to the west and the sky was colored a vivid orange. There were so many things that happened this day. I looked over at Nick and he replied with a smile. Then, I looked at Michelle and she had a weak smile on but her eyes were still sad.
Silver looked at his daughter silently as she slept. Toshin was still caring for Sakaki and Makoto now sat, gazing at the setting sun.
~*~*~*~
As morning came, I was first to wake up. The sky was still gray and the wind was smelled fresh as I stood up and stretched my arms. Everyone was still asleep that time. Toshin was sleeping while sitting up. His arms were folded and Sakaki, who was sleeping on Toshin’s cloak, was still in her same position as she had yesterday. Makoto was lying down on the hard ground. Silver was asleep against the boulder while Emily was sleeping on his lap.
I walked around and noticed that Nick and Michelle were sleeping together. Michelle was leaning on Nick’s shoulder. I looked up at the sky and noticed the smoldering firewood where they once built the fire. It came to my mind that I was near Saffron city. If I can make it there and defeat Sabrina, I’ll just go to Viridian and get my final badge. Even though yesterday, I had no intention of entering the league, my hopes were renewed immediately.
I began my way towards Saffron, just south from here. Though I’m not sure if I’m really ready. That uneasiness stopped me in my tracks. I turned to look back at my friends. Something looked wrong though. Where’s Nick?
“Looking for me?” He said abruptly from behind me.
I let out a small yell as I jumped back. He was smiling as I fell back to the ground. “Don’t do that!” I whispered loudly in an angry tone.
“Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I thought you were going to really leave us again,” He grinned as he helped me up.
“I’m not going to leave again!” I muttered angrily as I dusted my back. “I just want to challenge the gym leader…Sabrina…you know….”
Nick looked at me quizzically. “You sure you can beat her? I think your Pokémon aren’t that strong enough,”
I looked at him back in a serious way.
“Lemme see your Pokémon,” He said as he lent out his hand.
I took out my six Pokéballs and then took out my Pokédex at the same time. “Here, you can check their status with this thing,”
“Oh yeah, I remember you pulling out that thing once in a while.” Nick replied as he took the Pokéballs in one hand and the Pokédex in the other. He muttered to himself as he checked my Pokémon’s stats.
“Since when did you know so much about Pokémon?” I asked all of the sudden. “And how do you know so much about that Pokédex?”
He looked at me and smiled. “My grandfather is a professor in Hoenn. He makes stuff like these, too.”
“Really? Oh yeah…I think I’ve heard you before talking about your grandfather…” I replied as he continued to examine my Pokémon.
When he finished examining my Pokémon, he returned them to me, and my Pokédex. “Well they are pretty strong…but I think you should evolve some of them.”
I looked at my Pokémon. They seem pretty well to what they are right now. I’m not sure if I can evolve them right now. “How can I evolve them right now?” I asked him. “I don’t know much about evolution…”
As I said the sentence, he quickly took Abby, Doga, and Damien. “Gary, do you know these guys could evolve when you trade them?”
I looked at him with a confused look. “Evolve? Trading?”
“Yeah! And I think I saw Marina give you those metal coats, right?”
I nodded.
“Well that’s great! Just make your Onix and your Scyther hold them while I get ready for the trade.”
~*~*~*~
“What are you going to trade?” I questioned him as I readied my three Pokémon.
He took out his small trading machine that I’ve seen before. He then took out his three Pokéballs. “Oh some of my Pokémon. I bet you’ve seen them before,” He replied as he showed them to me. I could see his Mightyena, his Beautifly, and my Magneton from before.
“Hey, isn’t that my Magneton?” I asked him all of the sudden.
He nodded in reply. “Yep it is! It’s really useful and I don’t think you’ve seen it in my battles. But I kicked Foster’s but with it!”
“Foster? You already beat him?”
“Yeah, he was easy…” He readied his Pokéballs. “Did you have your Pokémon hold those items?”
I nodded affirmatively and readied my Pokéballs. First up was Abby. I placed her Pokéball under the suction cup-like tube. Then, Nick placed his Mightyena’s Pokéball under the other side of the machine, just beneath the suction cup tube. With a flash of light, our Pokémon were traded. Then, Nick pushed a few buttons and our Pokéballs transferred once more.
I looked down at Abby and noticed her changing in the Pokéball. She grew taller compared to her old form and she gained two spoons in both hands. I noticed that she’s grown bigger than her older form.
“Next!” Nick exclaimed as he took out his Beautifly.
I took out Doga’s Pokéball and peered it. My Onix looked back at me with a metal coat in its mouth. The metal coat glittered as Doga fidgeted in its ball, making it shake a bit. I placed his Pokéball under the suction cup like tube and Nick placed his Beautifly on the other side. In a blink of an eye, they were quickly exchanged and then, they were exchanged immediately.
I quickly took Doga’s rumbling Pokéball and looked inside. Doga was changing. Its body became shinier and its head grew bigger. Its jaw became wider as it looked ferociously at me. I smirked seeing such a cool looking Pokémon.
I took out Damien’s Pokéball without hesitation next. I watched Magneton traded along with my Schyter. Then, they were exchanging once more. I looked at my Schyter and now, it was red rather than green. It had metal claws, snapping at me. Its wings looked heavy and metallic. Its shining read body gleamed as I examined it, holding it up in the air. I couldn’t stop smiling gleefully.
“This is so cool!” I exclaimed. “Thanks, Nick!”
“No problem!” Nick replied as he smiled with me. He kept his mini trading machine in his bag. “I’m just happy I helped you, Gary!”
I smiled back as I placed my Pokéballs in my pocket.
“By the way, Gary,” Nick began as I looked up at him. He seems to have a concerned face. “The morning you left, Michelle was really silent. She’s still quiet even now. Do you know what happened to her?”
I looked at him with an alarmed expression. I didn’t want to tell him of the incident. I didn’t want to. “I don’t know…” I replied as I scratched my head and tried to hide my expression.
Nick eyed me with suspicion but then smiled again. “Okay. Beat Sabrina for me!”

Chapter 64: Another challenge
I summed up my courage as I looked up at a familiar sight. I was once more in front of Saffron city gym. I know it might be dangerous since Pryce might pop out at any moment right now…but I wanted to get my seventh badge so badly.
I walked up to the gym and twisted the knob. As I walked inside, it felt as if my body was in autopilot. I didn’t remember myself walking along the halls of the gym. I found myself in front of the massive stadium at once. The roof was now repaired and there were now spotlights, unlike the last time.
“Calm down,” I thought to myself. “I’m sure she knows I’m here.”
As I thought those words, she immediately stepped out of the shadows. “I’m glad you made it this far, Gary,” Sabrina smiled as she came up in front of me. “I see you’ve grown stronger both mentally and by your Pokémon.”
I nodded slowly, not knowing what to reply. I gulped as I took out my Pokéball. “I want the challenge now,” I stammered.
“Very well…you do not need to be nervous, Gary,” She replied calmly. She walked to the other side. I heard a clap and the spotlights brightened. The light was so intense I could now see the whole battlefield. It was a huge marble floor with Sabrina on the far side.
“Are you ready?” I heard her yell.
“I am!” I replied back as I took out my Pokéball.
I saw her summon out a Pokémon. I squinted to see what Pokémon it was and immediately knew that it was a Mr. Mime. I smirked, feeling my confidence increase. “Doga!” I yelled as I threw my Great Ball.
Doga immediately came out. He looked ferocious since he towered compared to that Mr. Mime. His intimidating face glowered down at the Mr. Mime. Mr. Mime shivered as Doga snapped its jaws at it.
Sabrina simply stared Doga and smirked. “You win this badge if you defeat my three Pokémon with your three Pokémon.” She said as she held up a circular yellow badge. “Now, let’s start. Barrier!”
In front of Mr. Mime, I could see something shine but then disappears. I’ve seen this attack before. It’s an invisible wall that physical attacks couldn’t penetrate easily. I tried to think of a way of penetrating this barrier…
“Your move,”
I calmed myself down, thinking of a good solution. But then, I realized something. “Doga, crunch!”
Doga lunged forward, through the barrier and opened its jaws. It then closed its mouth quickly, crunching Mr. Mime. It recoiled back and tried to recover from the fall.
“Impressive,” I heard Sabrina yell as Doga quickly returned to his position while his body clanged.
I wasn’t completely sure if Sabrina would be this easy. She might be hiding something else…
“Barrier!” Sabrina yelled again. Again, Mr. Mime waved its arms in intricate ways, strengthening the previous barrier.
I didn’t notice her plan. “Use crunch again, Doga!”
Doga lunged forward, loudly with its clanging body, and used a crunch attack on Mr. Mime again.
“Psychic!” Sabrina yelled as her Mr. Mime recovered from the attack. Mr. Mime waved its arms in a strange way and sent out a powerful, invisible psychic wave. The wave hit Doga but it didn’t affect it much. Doga just shook off the attack and glared back at Mr. Mime.
“It’s time to finish it,” I yelled as I pointed towards Mr. Mime. “Iron tail!” In my arrogance, I forgot about the barriers. As Doga swung its glowing tail towards Mr. Mime, it suddenly froze on its tracks.
“Gotcha,” Sabrina smirked cleverly. “Use another psychic attack!”
Her Mr. Mime launched another invisible psychic attack and hit Doga, who seems to be paralyzed. Again, the attack didn’t faze Doga much.
“What happened?” I muttered to myself. I looked over to Sabrina but she simply smiled back at me. “Okay then, crunch!” Doga seems to have been released somehow and lunged towards Mr. Mime. But as it opened its mouth to attack, Doga suddenly froze. Its mouth was still wide open. “No!”
“Psychic towards the mouth!” Sabrina commanded her Mr. Mime. The attack connected this time but with full force since the attack went inside Doga and not through his metal armor.
My Steelix roared in pain as it squirmed and struggled. As the attack ended, Doga fainted. I returned him immediately and readied my next Pokémon. “Gabby, win this for me!” I released my Milotic. Out came a long, elegant pink Pokémon with bright red eyes and a fan on the end of its tail. It fanned itself with its tail as it looked at Mr. Mime luxuriously.
Sabrina smirked. “Barrier again,”
Mr. Mime waved its arms once more and created another invisible barrier. I figured out that when she used barrier last time for Doga, she somehow created an invisible box that stopped Doga in his tracks. Now, I’m not falling for the same trap.
“Gabby, ice beam!” I yelled, pointing at Mr. Mime.
Gabby inhaled and sent out a blue beam from its mouth and towards Mr. Mime. It was a direct hit as the ice beam penetrated the barrier and hit Mr. Mime. The attack formed ice crystals around Mr. Mime and froze it. I could see Sabrina grit her teeth at a distance.
“Good, now use hydro pump!” I commanded my Milotic. Gabby inhaled again and sent out a powerful surge of water towards Mr. Mime. The attack hit and caused Mr. Mime to defrost. Now, it fainted.
“Very impressive,” Sabrina smirked as she returned her Pokémon. She took out an Ultra Ball and threw it. Out came a bug Pokémon with shining wings. Its purple body emitted clouds of brown dust as it flapped its humongous wings. Its big bug eyes stared at Gabby and me.
“That’s not a psychic type Pokémon,” I remarked as I examined it. “I think it’s a bug type.”
“Correct,” Sabrina said as she folded her arms. “Venomoths may be bug types, they still have psychic powers.”
“Oh well, let’s continue! Gabby, use ice beam!”
“Double team,” Sabrina said calmly. Venomoth immediately multiplied into many different duplicates. My ice beam struck the Venomoth that was there but the ice beam simply went through the Venomoth.
“Darn,” I murmured as I tried to figure out which one was the real Venomoth. The duplicates started to surround Gabby as I thought of a plan. “Gabby, try the one that’s directly right of you!”
Gabby fired an ice beam to the left but it wasn’t the real one. The ice beam simply went through the Venomoth and hit the wall, freezing it.
“Futile,” Sabrina muttered. “Gigadrain!” The Venomoths all went to the far left and formed one Venomoth. It formed a small, shining green ball on its mouth. Small, shining green lights came out of Gabby. Soon, a multitude of these balls came out of Abby. My Milotic seems to be weakened since it gasped for air as the attack finished. After the attack was executed, Venomoth returned once more in multiple forms.
“Ice beam on your left!” I yelled. Gabby inhaled once more and fired a blue beam to where I think the real Venomoth is. It turned out that I’m wrong. The attack was a failure since the ice beam went through the Venomoth. As this happened, the Venomoths formed one Venomoth once more.
“Stun spore!” Sabrina yelled. Immediately, Venomoth flapped its wings and sent out purple dusts towards Milotic.
My mind raced as I tried to find a way to block the attack. The cloud of dust was heading to Gabby quickly. “Blizzard!” I yelled. I remembered that blizzard was an ice and wind attack. I bet this one will send it back to Venomoth.
The whole stadium turned cold as my Milotic roared. I felt a rush of wind from behind me and headed straight towards Venomoth. Snow from Milotic scattered around as I realized that the attack was a success. The blizzard blew of the stun spore back towards Venomoth.
“Very good,” Sabrina smirked as she brushed of snow from her clothes. Snow was littered everywhere and her Venomoth was struggling to stay flying.
“Finish it off with a hydro pump!” I yelled. My Milotic sent out another powerful blast of water towards Venomoth. This time, the attack connected and Venomoth was slammed to the wall.
Sabrina returned her Venomoth and took out her last Pokéball. I braced myself as she summoned out her last Pokémon—an Alakazam.
“This is it,” I thought to myself as I gripped my fist. “I’m going to win this…” I immediately knew what I’m going to do. “Recover!” Gabby glowed a bright blue color. As the glowing stopped, her wounds disappeared immediately. Now I’m ready.
“Good strategy…but not good enough…” Sabrina muttered. “Thunder punch…” At a long distance, Sabrina’s Alakazam teleported in front of Abby and with a bright, glowing fist, it punched Abby directly to the face.
“Gabby!” I yelled as she recoiled back and growled at Alakazam, which simply teleported back to where it was before it attacked Gabby. “Hydro pump!” I yelled. Gabby sent out a surge of water towards Alakazam. Instead of hitting it, Alakazam waved its two spoons and caused the water to go into its right. “What?”
Sabrina chuckled. “This is how true psychics battle. You use their greatest powers and try to manipulate them in many ways,”
“Whatever,” I muttered arrogantly.
“Very well. Thunder punch again!”
As she said her command, her Alakazam teleported in front of Gabby again with its glowing fist ready to strike.
“Gabby, dodge it!” But it was too late. As I said the words, the attack already connected and caused massive damage to Gabby. “You alright, Gabby?” I yelled to her. She simply let out a low growl of appreciation but still wanted to fight. “Okay, good. Use recover!”
Gabby’s body glowed once more a bright blue color and then it disappeared. Gabby’s wounds disappeared at once.
“That won’t work this time,” Sabrina commented. “Finish it off with thunder punch.” Her Alakazam quickly teleported and reappeared in front of Gabby. Before I could hesitate, it already hit Gabby directly to the face. Gabby was sent flying due to the force of the punch. She crashed to the wall, making it crack.
I returned her at once and thought of the Pokémon I’m going to use next. Now, I better win this or else I’m going to have to challenge Sabrina once more. And that would be pretty much painful.
“Blaze, let’s do this!” I yelled as I threw my Pokéball, releasing Blaze. My Charizard towered Sabrina’s Alakazam as it growled and flapped its wings. It stomped the ground with its large legs as it glared at Alakazam.
Sabrina simply smirked as she folded her arms comfortably. “Psychic,” She said immediately even before I could react.
Alakazam sent out an invisible psychic wave towards Blaze as it crossed its spoons. Fly up, Blaze!” I yelled. Blaze obeyed as it flew up, dodging the psychic attack. “Flamethrower!”
Blaze sent out a high-speed blast of fire towards Alakazam. However, Alakazam simply pushed it off the attack to its left. “How did it do that?” I yelled out frustratingly. That was the second time it did that…
Sabrina smirked again. “Thunder punch!” She said lazily. Her Alakazam responded as it teleported and reappeared, afloat, near Blaze.
“Dodge the attack!” I yelled to Blaze. My words echoed through the whole gym. Blaze dodged the attack and immediately landed softly on the ground. It roared at Alakazam as it flapped its wings.
“Very impressive,” Sabrina remarked. “But how long will we keep doing this?”
I didn’t reply as my mind raced to what should I do next. “Blaze, use flamethrower!” I yelled. Blaze sent out another powerful stream of fire towards Alakazam. Again, Alakazam just sent it to the right once more. I did the attack again and again and again.
“Is that all? Futile efforts and mindless firing?” Sabrina taunted me.
“Flamethrower again, Blaze!” I yelled. Blaze sent out a powerful flamethrower once more. Again Alakazam shoved it off to the right. But this time, the flamethrower was just a diversion. Sabrina or her Alakazam didn’t notice Blaze flying towards Alakazam at high-speed. “Crush claw!” I yelled.
With two glowing claws, Blaze slashed Alakazam. It recoiled back with two huge slash marks on its body.
“Wing attack!” Blaze was still in midair as he positioned himself for a wing attack. The distraught Alakazam, which was still recovering from the crush claw attack, was severely hit by Blaze’s wing attack. The momentum of Blaze’s flight was enough to deal damage to Alakazam but it wasn’t enough.
Blaze returned quickly to where it was after performing at that attack. Sabrina looked in awe to see what damage was given to her Alakazam. It tired to stand up and succeeded as it poised itself for battle again.
“That was very clever of you, using your flamethrower as a diversion. But it wasn’t enough. Recover!”
To my horror, her Alakazam glowed a blue color and simply healed up its injuries.
“Oh no,” I muttered. I forgot all about Alakazam’s recover. The attack that Blaze just performed tired out Blaze and now that I’ve performed it, I was already out of ideas. Sabrina couldn’t fall for the same trap again and I’m sure of it!
“I’m expecting more from you, Gary.” She smiled. “Now, let us continued.”

Chapter 65: Mending a shattered heart
I let out a frustrated sigh as I thought of my plan. My mind was blank and I couldn’t think of anything else to do. My last plan was a success but it just made me spill out my plans.
“It’s your turn, Gary,” Sabrina repeated for the third time.
“Blaze, fly forward!” I yelled. He obeyed and flew forward at once, readying his claws for an attack.
As Blaze moved closer and closer, Sabrina didn’t command any attack. She just waited there as Blaze was approaching her Alakazam. Finally, as I was about to call out the attack, she finally made a move during that split second. “Psychic!”
“No!” I yelled as Blaze received a direct hit from the attack. Blaze roared and growled as he was thrown back. He used his wings to regain balance in the air.
“Thunder punch!” Sabrina commanded her Alakazam once more. It teleported then reappeared in front of Blaze again, who was still recovering from the close range attack. It readied its fist, which are glowing a yellow color.
It was a split second decision to never give up. “Dodge to the left!” I yelled to Blaze. He immediately obeyed and moved his body to the left, and was almost hit by Alakazam. It was as if everything was in slow motion. I found my opportunity as Alakazam stretched its hand, slowly.
“Crush claw!” Now that Blaze had enough time to recover from the attack, he gathered up his strength and then slashed Alakazam with two glowing claws. The attack was a direct his and made Alakazam land on the floor face down. “Fire blast!” I yelled. Blaze sent out a wheel of fire towards the downed Alakazam. This time, it didn’t reflect the attack. It was a direct hit. The Fire Blast blackened the floor and the back of Sabrina’s Alakazam.
Blaze landed on the ground with a soft thud and roared. His roars were heard through the whole stadium. I’ve finally won out of desperation. “Yes!” I yelled.
Sabrina walked up to her Alakazam and lifted it up and returned it to its Pokéball. “Bravo,” She said as she clapped her hands. “A very impressive battle indeed. You’ve finally won my respect. You are Green’s son.” She then took out the Marsh Badge. The golden circular badge gleamed as the bright lights shined on it. “Take this, you deserve it very much,”
I took the badge from her hand. My hands were still shaking as a wide grin spread throughout my face. One more badge left…
“Now, I know of the current situations. It’s best that you head to Viridian city without walking there. I’m sure there are dangers on the land.” She said lazily. “For your protection,”
~*~*~*~
As I walked out of the northern gates of Saffron city, I tried to remember where Nick and the others were. But to my surprise, my friends were already waiting outside, with the absence of Toshin, Makoto, Sakaki, and Silver.
“Huh? Where are the others?” I asked Nick as he cheered and rushed to me. Michelle and Emily followed his slowly.
“Oh them? They left…they say they got some business to do.” Nick smiled and quickly changed the subject. “So did you win the badge, Gary? Did you? Did you?” He asked excitedly.
“Yeah, I did!” I said as I held up my Marsh badge along with my other badges.
“Awesome! Now we have one more gym to go before we go to the league!” He exclaimed happily.
I wasn’t paying attention to him…kind of…I was looking behind him—Michelle and Emily looked at me. Michelle looked at me with her sullen eyes but with a weak smile. Emily simply looked at me with her old reaction…the one that I’ve seen when I first met her…the gleam in her eyes was gone.
“Gary? You listening?”
“…What? Oh! Oh yeah…one more badge…” I quickly replied as I snapped out of my trance.
“Something wrong, Gary?” Nick asked as he looked at me.
“No, nothing. So, you want to go to Viridian?” I said as I tried not to look on both girls.
He nodded. “Sure, well, if you want to fly there, I don’t know if they would like to.” He turned around to the girls. “Her, you guys want to fly to Viridian city?”
Michelle simply shrugged. “Dunno…if you want to…” She muttered.
“I’m taking that as a yes,” Nick said quickly. He then turned to me. “Oh…by the way, Gary. We don’t have any flying Pokémon, so can we borrow your Pokémon?” He asked me as he grinned guiltily.
“Well, uh, sure!” I replied as I took out Sage’s Pokéball. “Here you go!”
He quickly took it out from my hands and smiled gleefully. “Thanks, Gary! You’re the man!”
I smiled sheepishly as he told Michelle about flying. I didn’t notice Emily walk up to me and tug my sleeve. I turned around and ended up meeting her silver eyes.
“Emily?”
“Gary…I want to…I want to thank you for healing daddy…” She said in a low voice. She looked down at the ground. I could see a small twinkle in her eyes. She was wearing a small smile on her face.
“Oh, no problem!” I replied.
“I shouldn’t have ran away…” She muttered. “I should’ve stayed…that wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t ran away…”
“What? Oh no it’s not you…don’t blame yourself!” I tried my best effort to cheer her up. “It’s…It’s my fault, too…” My voice lowered. As I said the words, she looked up at me.
“Gary…I just wish you…you would know how I feel…” She said sadly as she held my hand. Her hand was cold but her skin was soft.
“Emily…I’m really sorry…in a way…I’m the one who you should blame. But I don’t want to hurt you…” I said, trying my best to comfort her but her sad eyes tried to pull out the words inside me.
“You guys ready?” Nick said all of the sudden.
I looked up to him and felt Emily’s hand loosen and let go. “Yeah, we are!” I replied quickly. Michelle eyed me suspiciously from behind Nick.
“Alright! Now let’s go to Viridian city!”
Nick summoned out Sage immediately and I summoned out Blaze. Even though Blaze was slightly injured from before, the Pokémon center was pretty quick to heal him. Michelle climbed behind Sage’s back along with Nick at her front. I helped Emily climb up to Blaze’s back.
“You ready?” I asked her. I felt her nod as she wrapped her arms around my back tightly. Inside, I knew she still felt the same thing as she did back then…but I couldn’t…back then I couldn’t…
As my Pokémon rose up to the sky, I looked at her. She had her eyes closed shut. Her red hair waved as the wind ran through us. Then, I looked forward. It would be a matter of moments before everything in my life would be changed forever…
~*~*~*~
It took just an hour to reach Viridian city. We were still up in the air and below us I could see the familiar city that I’ve visited when I began the training. The same tall buildings were still there. The city was still bustling and full of activity. To my right, I motioned Nick to land just south of Viridian city. He replied with a thumbs-up. Both of my Pokémon surged downwards and landed softly on the ground.
“Phew! I should do that often,” Nick said as he jumped down from Sage and threw my Pokéball. Michelle jumped down from Sage and I helped Emily. Then, I returned my Pokémon immediately.
“I’m really fired up!” Nick exclaimed. “I’m going to challenge the leader, want to follow, Gary?”
I shook my head. “No thanks. I’ll challenge her tomorrow,” I muttered.
“Oh yeah! I remembered when we first met you here in Viridian city!” Nick suddenly exclaimed. “And Michelle got beat by the leader, huh?” He nudged Michelle with a grin.
Michelle simply groaned in annoyance and crossed her arms.
“Hey, what’s wrong with you? You’re supposed to fight back at me!”
“Whatever,” She muttered as she looked around.
“Whatever? Are you getting angry again just because the leader beat you last time?” Nick yelled.
Michelle shook her head and ignored Nick. Nick simply sighed frustratingly. “Oh well…I’ll be seeing you guys later!”
I waved as Nick wandered of to the city. Now, it’s just the girls and me. It was noon and my stomach started to rumble. “Oh yeah, didn’t ate breakfast,” I muttered as I looked at both girls. “You girls want to go find food or something?”
Michelle simply shrugged and Emily didn’t reply.
“Oh well,” I muttered to myself. “I’ll go to the city then.”
“Hey, wait!” Michelle yelled as I began to walk away. “I’m following you!”
As I predicted, Emily decided to follow to since she doesn’t want to be alone out in this wilderness.
“Oh well…” I muttered as we walked towards the city.
~*~*~*~
When I finally found food, they were hungry, too. I was forced to share my sandwich with them. We were all sitting on the bench at the park in Viridian city. I was in the middle, Emily was at my right and Michelle was at my left. It looked kind of weird when you look it in one way.
Emily looked down at the ground while she was playing with her red hair, curling it with her fingers. Michelle just stared at the opposite direction and I couldn’t figure out what to do…
“So…um…so, how’s it going?” I said out of nowhere. “We guys…haven’t…sorta talked to each other for a while…”
“I’m…fine…” Michelle replied weakly.
I looked at Emily and she didn’t reply. She was still busy playing with her hair.
“Oh well…” I muttered to myself.
“Gary,” Michelle said shyly. “Can…can I talk to you for a second?” She asked. “Privately…”
I looked at Emily and she didn’t seem to pay any attention at all.
“Okay,” I agreed to her. “Can you stay here for a while, Emily?” I asked her.
She nodded slowly and continued to play with her hair. Michelle grabbed my hand as she led me to where Emily couldn’t hear. It was just behind a tree near the bench to where Emily sat.
“Something wrong?” I asked her as we stopped.
“What do you mean ‘something wrong’?” She snapped at me. Suddenly, her eyes were violent. “You know what’s wrong!”
“Michelle…” I stammered. “I told you before…”
“I’m sick of this!” Michelle snapped at me. “Why do you always have to be like this Gary?”
“Have to be what?” I was pretty much puzzled and don’t know what else to say.
“Gary! Don’t be so dumb! I…I just…” Tears began to form in her eyes. “You always have to be so kind on Emily and me…and yet…you just couldn’t accept how we both love you…”
“But what do you want? I’ve already heard enough of this!” My voice was rising as usual. I could feel my heart beating rapidly. I clenched my fists as she looked at me with her saddened eyes.
“Gary…I really want to…I really want you to kiss me…” She blushed as she said those words. Of course I was stunned since I haven’t actually kissed a girl before and she’s asking for one…
My mind raced for my course of action. I couldn’t think. She closed her eyes and waited for me. I was starting to panic since I didn’t know what to do…
As time passed, I was feeling as if a minute was a day in my life. She waited and she waited…
Finally, I had no choice but to kiss her on the cheek. As I quickly separated from her, she was blushing and smiling at the same time. “Thanks,” She said sweetly.
She then turned around and walked towards the bench where Emily sat. She sat next to her and didn’t say a word during the whole day…

Chapter 66: Taking the last challenge
“Oh yeah, I forgot to give you this,” I said all of the sudden, breaking the silence. We were still in the park in the bench. Now, its already sunset. I took out a Pokéball—the same one given by Marina to me. “Here,” I said to Emily.
She had a puzzled look on her face as she examined the Pokéball.
“Take it,” I moved my hand closer to her.
She stretched out her hand and took the Pokéball from my hand. She peered closer to the clear, red top. “Thanks,” She whispered.
“Ah, you should thank Marina. She gave that to me!” I smiled as I scratched my head.
Emily kept her Pokéball in her pocket and remained silent. It was already sunset and Nick wasn’t still here.
“Where is he?” Michelle yelled as she stood up impatiently. “Where is that boy?”
“Michelle, I’m sure he’s on his way…and I don’t think he knows we’re here, anyway,” I suggested to her.
It was dusk. The sun was illuminating the city with its dim, orange rays. The park was now deserted and a few people walked the streets. We decided to leave the park and find Nick instead. He could be everywhere by now since all he knew was that we’re supposed to be outside of Viridian city.
We tried to find him there but he wasn’t there. Finally, we decided to go to the gym. It was already night when we reached the gym door. The gym looked the same ever since the last time I saw it. However, this time, it looked dark and dank and only a single light illuminated one room.
“That idiot must be in here,” Michelle muttered in an irritated tone. “Making me worry so much,” She then continued to mumble out her mom and dad getting angry since Nick used to cry always since she always beat him up.
“Come on. I bet the gym leader know where he went,” I suggested to her.
She muttered another word and approached the gym doors. She then pounded the doors of the gym, loudly. My eardrums pounded loudly as I heard her loud knocks. I looked down at Emily and she stared back with her gleaming silver eyes.
“Hey! Where’s my bro?” She yelled loudly while she pounded at the doors.
Good thing was that the gym was isolated away from the houses. Michelle could’ve woken up a bunch of people right now.
“Open this door!” She yelled once more, this time a lot louder.
“Michelle, quiet down!” I whispered. “Sleeping people are going to hear you!”
Then, we heard footsteps resonating inside. The footsteps grew louder and louder as seconds passed. Michelle stopped pounding the door as we heard the door unlatch with a metallic click.
As the doors opened, a familiar face greeted us. Lyn’s sleepy face appeared. She was rubbing her eyes and she wore her nightgown. “I hate it when I sleep at the gym,” I heard her mutter out loud. She squinted at Michelle. “Oh, it’s you,” She muttered.
“Yeah it’s me! Remember me?” Michelle yelled loudly.
“Not so loud!” Lyn replied, rubbing her ear. “What do you want? If you want a challenge, it has to be tomorrow…” She scratched her long, tangled black hair.
“No, I’m not here for a stupid challenge. I want to know where my brother is.”
“Your brother?”
“Yeah! He said that he’s supposed to challenge you this afternoon,”
A bewildered expression replaced Lyn’s irritated expression. “Challenge?” She repeated.
“Yeah! My brother, Nick is supposed to challenge you this afternoon. We’re trying to find him,” Michelle replied, more calmer this time.
Lyn shrugged. “Sorry, I didn’t have any challenges this afternoon,”
“What?” Michelle exclaimed all of the sudden. “But…he…he’s supposed to be here right now!”
Lyn shook her head. “Sorry, but I don’t remember any challenger challenging me this afternoon,”
“But…” Michelle’s voice trailed off.
A moment of silence filled the evening air. A soft rush of the wind through the trees was the only thing that was heard.
“I’m sorry,” Lyn said breaking the silence. “If there’s anything I can make up for your fruitless search…”
Michelle shook her head. She looked down at the ground.
“Maybe you can stay here for a while.” She then looked behind her towards us. “Gary! It’s you!” She exclaimed after I saw her squint her narrow eyes.
I smiled back at her and waved.
“Hey, you three stay here for the night. It’s cold outside during the night.”
It took a while to convince Michelle into staying in the gym that night. Luckily, the gym was actually Lyn’s home. Besides the stadium and the long hallway of previous gym leaders, there was a kitchen, two bedrooms—one where Lyn sleeps and one for guests, bathrooms, and a lot more.
After taking a bath, I slipped in pajamas that Lyn lent me and headed towards my room that I shared with Emily and Michelle. They already took a bath and both in pajamas. Michelle stared out at the window outside. She had her long, blonde hair loose. Emily on the other hand was looking at her new Pokémon. She was leaning on one of the bed’s pillow.
I looked around the room. There was only one window and a chair overlooking at the window. Michelle sat on that chair. One huge bed was against the beige colored walls. It looked comfortable with its thick blankets and soft, feather pillows. A tall mirror was on the left side of the room and a dresser was right next to it.
I sighed as I sat down on the bed and stretched my arms. “I wanna sleep,” I muttered as I let myself fall on the bed, looking at the beige colored ceiling. I was thinking of challenging Lyn tomorrow but we need to find Nick first. Then, we challenge her.
I closed my eyes, resting them from the day’s journey. When I opened them, I was freaked out to see two silver eyes peering down at me.
“Ack!” I yelled as I recoiled back. Emily looked at me curiously with her innocent eyes.
“Oops,” She muttered as she crawled back. “Did I scare you?”
“Yeah,” I replied, feeling my heart, which was beating rapidly, non-stop.
“I’m sorry,” She replied as she looked down at the bed. It’s funny since her pajamas looked pretty loose since they were too big for her small frame. She had a hard time keeping it on, often fidgeting each time she said a word since her red checkered pajama kept on drooping down her shoulder.
“It’s okay,” I sighed as I crawled back where I lay down before. “Why were you looking at me?”
“Oh nothing…” She replied as she looked at Michelle, who was now sleeping at the chair. I didn’t really know if she was asleep or not since she was mumbling something about what a loser his brother is. “I just…wanted to check if you’re awake…”
“That’s okay,” I replied to her, smiling. “These days, weird stuff happens, huh?”
She nodded her head with a weak smile. She fidgeted again as she raised her sleeve, which was again, drooping down, revealing her shoulder.
“I want to sleep now,” She blurted out all of the sudden.
I nodded as I walked towards the lights. She lay down on one side of the bed, facing the window. She let out a frustrated sigh as she pulled up her sleeve again, which was again sagging down her shoulder. I took a blanket first and walked towards Michelle. I placed it over her since it’s going to be cold tonight. Then, I walked towards the switch to the lights. I clicked on the switch and everything is now shrouded in darkness. I found myself wandering towards the bed and as soon as I found it, I climbed up the bed and quietly lay myself down; facing the same direction as Emily was…was…I didn’t know that she was actually facing me.
Since I had a habit of having my arm stretched outwards with my hand pointing to where I’m facing, Emily must’ve figured that out since I felt her hand hold my hand and felt her face rest against my arm, with her arms wrapped around. In a way, she was hugging my arm. And in a way, she still loves me and she’s waiting for me to fall in love with her. I was half asleep when I realized this. I felt stupid and foolish…I’ve mentioned to them that they were just friends over and over again…I couldn’t simply accept that Emily still loved me no matter what I said to her…even though I made her cry… These incidents and conversations with her…every time she talked to me or simply hold my hand or at least kiss me…it didn’t change my heart one bit. The next morning, I’ll wake up never remembering this incident.
~*~*~*~
The next morning, I realized that Emily was still sleeping. Michelle on the other hand, was already awake and dressed. She seems to be quite determined today since I watched her boldly walk out the door. I sat up from the bed and noticed that Emily was still clinging to my arm. Slowly, I managed to separate myself from her.
She slept soundly as I stood up, dressed and walked out of the door. After eating breakfast with Michelle, who never said a word, I walked out of the kitchen and unexpectedly met Lyn.
“Good morning!” She greeted me as she smiled cheerfully.
“Morning,” I replied and then yawned.
“I hope you’ll find your friend eventually today,” Lyn smiled at me.
I nodded as I smiled back. I walked out of the kitchen and walked across the battlefield, overlooking to the door outside, I imagined Nick slamming the doors open yelling about the cold. Then, I imagined Michelle leaping out towards him with arms wide open then converting her arms of sibling love to fists of fury, she’d punch him across the face.
I chuckled as I made my way to the room where we slept. I entered the room and noticed that Emily was awake now. She was sitting up, rubbing her eyes and holding her sagging sleeve.
“Morning!” I greeted her.
She turned her head at me and smiled. “Good morning,” Her hair which was a bit disheveled was quickly fixed as she ran her hands through her hair and then making a ponytail running down to the back of her head.
The rays of the sun streamed down the open window and I could smell the fresh breeze of morning. I could hear chirping outside and the distant sound of cars running down the road. I looked at Emily and she was having a hard time standing up since her pants didn’t quite fit her well and she was holding her pants and her sleeve at the same time.
“Want me to help?” I asked her as I approached her.
She shook her head quickly as her left sleeve drooped, revealing her bare shoulder. She was holding the right sleeve with her left hand and holding her loose pants with her right hand at the same time.
“Here, I’ll hand you your clothes,” I said as I rummaged through the dresser and pulling out her newly washed clothes, thanks to the Viridian city gym’s laundry room. I placed her clothes on top of the bed, next to her and went outside.
“Wait! Where are you going?” She asked me as she grabbed her dark shirt while holding her pants at the same time.
“You’re going to dress, aren’t you?” I laughed. “I’m going to wait outside, don’t worry!”
I closed the door and sat down against it. I waited for her to get finished as I looked at the wall across from me. Finally, I heard the doorknob twist open. I quickly stood up to see Emily, who was smiling happily at me.
“Thanks,”
“No problem,” I replied with a wide grin. “Now let’s go find Nick!”
Before I could walk another step, I heard a voice behind me. “Gary, how many do you have?”
I turned around and Lyn was standing right behind us. She had a grim expression in her face.
“Uh…I have seven…” I replied, rummaging through my pockets. I took out my seven badges quickly and watched Lyn walk towards me. She took all seven and examined them closely and then, she returned them to my hand.
“Astounding!” She exclaimed. “Gary, if you want, you can battle me now!”
I had a shocked expression. “Battle? But…I still need to find my friend and…”
“Gary, I’m going to be your final challenge, don’t let me down!”
I looked at Emily and she doesn’t seem to know what’s happening since she had a puzzled look in her face. I tried to make a decision…a little battle wouldn’t hurt, would it?

Oni....Really good..... a good chapter.
But one question.... Where'd did you get the name Lyn from? I don't think I'm thinking what your thinking......XD
Lyn is my friend's name...XD
Some names here are names of my friends. Except Toshin/Hiroki, Makoto, Reiji, Sakaki...
The only time I used Lyn's name (from Fire Emblem) is from one of my old fanfics called "The Legends Keeper"... (made last year when FE wasn't released yet and I saw a preview of FE in Nintendo's Japanese website...I also used Eliwood's name there)Sadly, that fanfic is a failure X-X
Anyways, here's a new chapter!
Chapter 66: Twin hearted
I made up my mind of accepting the challenge. So here I am now, here at Viridian city’s stadium.
I summoned my courage as Lyn said the rules. She instructed that this would be a full battle—six on six. I tried to think of the best to what my strategy would be. I remembered this stadium clearly. This was here where I battled Lyn when I started my training. Now, I’m ready to defeat her. Then, I remembered the incident that happened during the battle. How come her mean look had an effect on me during her battle and not on any other battles? I shook off the thought thinking that it was just something that just happened.
I readied myself as I took out my first Pokéball containing Sage. I looked behind me and Emily was standing there, watching the battle closely.
“I hope you’ve grown strong enough, Gary,” Lyn yelled out to me as I saw her take out a Pokéball. Her bright eyes gleamed as she readied herself. “Ready?”
I nodded with anticipation. My heart was pounding so loudly that I could hear the pounding in my ears. I could also feel it raging in my chest. My palms were sweaty as I threw my Pokéball. “Let’s do this, Sage!”
I released my Pidgeot at once. Sage replied with a loud shrill cry as it flapped its majestic wings, often loosing huge feathers from them.
Lyn replied with a grin and threw her Pokéball. Out came a brown owl Pokémon, which I recognized immediately as a Noctowl. It looked at Sage curiously with its eyes transfixed to Sage. It tilted its head on one side and it had both feet on the ground.
I know what I’m dealing with now. Lyn might be a bird Pokémon user. But I’m not quite sure since she used a Houndour on me before. “You go first,” She was still grinning.
I nodded enthusiastically. “Sage, fly higher!” I yelled.
Sage replied to my command with a loud, shrill cry. It flapped its wings harder as it flew up higher. It waited for my command as it stayed there, flying.
“Confusion!” Lyn’s voice boomed around the stadium. Her Noctowl looked at my Pidgeot and then immediately sent out an invisible wave towards Sage. I was too slow to react to the attack and the attack finally connected.
Sage let out a frustrated cry as the attack hit him and made him lose his balance. “Sage!” I yelled as he tried to regain balance.
“Wing attack!” Lyn yelled before Sage could recover from the attack. I noticed Noctowl speed towards Sage in a blinding speed and hit Sage with its wings.
“Sage!” I yelled. That was all too fast and I wasn’t able to react to the attack. Sage finally regained balance and landed softly to the ground while spreading his wings. Noctowl, who was now sitting on the ground again, simply stared back at Sage.
“Don’t disappoint me, Gary,” Lyn yelled to me. “I’m just thinking that you underestimated me!”
I didn’t reply as I tried to think of a plan to beat Noctowl’s speed. “Fly up again!” I yelled to Sage. He immediately obeyed my command when it flew up in the air again.
“This again,” Lyn muttered loudly. “Confusion!”
This time I was ready for this attack. “Dodge it, Sage!” My Pidgeot obeyed immediately when it quickly dashed to the right. But something happened that I didn’t expect. The confusion attack followed Sage when he dodged it. “Hey!” I yelled as the attack knocked Sage out of the air and made him lose his balance again. Sage was trying to stay on the air, this time.
“Wing attack!” I hear Lyn yell out once more.
Before I could see Noctowl move, I yelled out my command. “Mirror move!”
Sage immediately recovered and sent out a powerful confusion blast towards the incoming Noctowl. The wave pushed Noctowl back before it could reach Sage. Noctowl was sent back to the ground, defenseless. Now was my chance.
“Wing attack!” I yelled. Blaze sped downwards towards Noctowl with amazing agility. Before Sage could reach Noctowl, it immediately dodged Sage’s attack by a hair even though it was still shocked from the confusion attack.
“Impressive,” Lyn said as her Noctowl recovered from the attack. Blaze was back again to where he was. “I didn’t expect you to use a mirror move attack,”
“Don’t mention it,” I laughed. I looked back at Emily and she seems to be really interested in the battle since her eyes glittered with excitement. However, she still remained silent.
“Good, now prepare yourself, Gary!” I always had that feeling that gym leaders would have some kind of secret attack with their Pokémon and Lyn was one of these gym leaders. “Double team!” She yelled. Noctowl immediately multiplied at once in dozens of forms. They positioned themselves in a horizontal line facing me, unlike some gym leaders, who tried to surround my Pokémon.
Since I’ve had many encounters with gym leaders who use double team, I know what to do. “Hit the far right!” I pointed to the Noctowl to the far right. Sage obeyed as he sped towards the Noctowl. Before he could reach it, Lyn already commanded an attack.
“Wrong choice,” I heard Lyn shout. “Confusion!”
Before she could call the attack, I knew she would call a confusion attack. “Fly up, Sage!” He aborted his attack and immediately flew up. I could see dozens of confusion attacks, which were visible rather than invisible follow Sage closely. Sage flew from left to right and right to left. He tried to shake off the attacks but failed to do so. I suddenly had an idea.
“Fly towards the Noctowls, starting on the right!” I yelled to Sage
Sage responded as it flew sideways towards the Noctowls. I could see them disappear one by one as Sage flew through them. Finally, when Sage reached the far left Noctowl, it was the real one. It was struck by a wing attack, which was then followed by its own confusion attacks. The attack was powerful enough to knock it out.
Lyn returned her Noctowl immediately before it collapsed on the ground. So now, it’s one down, five to go.
“A good battle,” Lyn smirked. “Now let’s see you go over this,” She threw another Pokéball and out came a large black Pokémon on all fours. I immediately recognized this Pokémon as a Houndoom. It let out an ear-piercing howl as it wagged its long pointed tail and snorted at Sage.
Sage flinched as the Houndoom howled. I did too since its howl sent shivers through my spine. I heard Emily let out a small squeak of terror as the howl echoed down the walls. The echo sounded as if there were multiple Houndooms in the gym.
“Your move,” Lyn smirked at me.
I steadied myself as I tried to think of a strategy to defeat this Houndoom. I’m not completely sure what this Houndoom is capable of…
“Wing attack!” I shouted. My voice resounded through the whole stadium.
Sage sped towards Houndoom with incredible speed. Before the attack could hit Sage, Lyn’s Houndoom jumped up an incredible height, evading the attack quickly and leaving it enough time to counter attack.
“Crunch!” Lyn shouted at the split second Houndoom jumped. Before Sage could realize what was happening, Houndoom came crashing down with its ferocious pearly, white teeth protruding. The counter attack connected as Houndoom plunged its teeth on Sage’s body. Sage let out cries of desperation as it was pinned down to the ground, struggling to escape from Houndoom’s crunch attack.
“Sage! Fly up!” I yelled, but my efforts were fruitless. Houndoom sank its teeth deeper and deeper down Sage’s body. “Stop it!” I yelled as Sage finally fainted. I returned Sage immediately and gritted my teeth that was all too savage and all too quick. Lyn simply smirked back at me as I took out my great ball. I sent out my Milotic and I know I’ll have an advantage over Lyn’s Houndoom.
“Ah, so you’re going over weaknesses, eh?” Lyn smiled. “Do you remember how I easily defeated that girl’s Squirtle from before?”
I nodded but this is my only chance. Abby’s attacks wouldn’t do much to Houndoom since psychic attacks have no effect on dark types. Further more, I have two steel type Pokémon in my team, making myself a disadvantage to fire types. Blaze could battle but I need to save him for later.
“I’m fine by your standards, then,” Lyn replied to my nod. “Iron tail,”
Lyn’s Houndoom lunged forward with its gleaming tail aimed at Gabby. It ran towards Gabby with amazing speed but my command was quick enough for Gabby to execute.
“Hydro pump!” I shouted. Gabby inhaled and then launched out a powerful blast of water from its mouth. I looked up to Houndoom but I saw it quickly evade the attack by jumping up high. Now, it’s going to attack Gabby if I’m not going to counter attack back to it.
“Ice beam to it!” I commanded Gabby as I pointed to Houndoom, which was coming down to strike Gabby pretty quickly.
Gabby sent out an icy blue beam on Houndoom. The attack connected and froze Houndoom. Now, Houndoom is just a lump of ice that’s going to fall on the ground. Gabby dodged the falling Houndoom as it landed on the floor with a loud thud.
Before I could hesitate, and conclude my thoughts of winning this round, Lyn commanded an attack.
“Flame wheel!” She yelled. At once, the ice around Houndoom turned to a vivid red and the heat started to melt the ice. It’s going to break free of the ice.
Before it could break free, I know what I’m going to do. “Hydro pump!” I yelled.
At the same time I yelled my command, the ice shattered around Houndoom and released it. Houndoom let out a powerful howl as it shook itself from the freezing water. Before it could react, Gabby’s powerful hydro pump blasted Houndoom out of the ring and sent it crashing to the wall, cracking it.
To my surprise, Houndoom landed on its feet, making a swift recovery from the attack. It barked at Gabby and showed its bloody teeth.
“Houndoom, fire blast!”
I took that attack as an advantage. I remembered clearly all the battles I’ve watched and this time, I’m going to have to use my current knowledge. “Mirror coat!” I yelled.
As the wheel of flame attacked Gabby, a wall appeared in front of her the moment I called the attack. The wall reversed the attack and sent it back to Houndoom. Confused to what’s happening, Houndoom received a full blast of the attack, which was doubled the power.
Lyn muttered miserably as she returned her fainted Houndoom. “I guess I’m the one who misjudged you,” She took out another Pokéball and summoned out a small black Pokémon with uneven ears and sharp claws.
It was a Sneasel. I know these Pokémon to be quick, tough, and sneaky. Now, I braced myself for this round.

Chapter 67: Twin Hearted (Part two)
Lyn had the first move this time. I braced myself since I know that Sneasels shouldn’t be under rated. They’re pretty quick and powerful.
“Quick attack,” Lyn commanded her Sneasel.
Before I could even react, the short, slim, black Pokémon advanced towards Gabby. It stretched its claws, ready to strike. Its small claws turned to long, sharp claws. It positioned itself in attack position then rammed itself to Gabby in one quick strike.
Gabby yelled in pain as Sneasel somersaulted back to where it was standing while sticking out a tongue at Gabby and me. Gabby growled as it recovered from the attack.
“That was fast!” I yelled since the attack all happened in a blink of an eye.
Lyn nodded. “I’m just getting started, Gary.” She then smiled. “Your turn or I’m gonna get you, Gary!”
“Okay, Gabby, hydro pump!” I shouted.
Gabby let out a powerful yell and then blasted a powerful surge of water towards Sneasel. To my surprise, Sneasel avoided the attack without any effort at all. Then, in a quick motion, Sneasel immediately advanced forward and performed a slash attack at Gabby.
“Gabby, you okay?” I yelled to her.
She responded with a nod but didn’t growl more. She simply glared back at the Sneasel, which stuck out its tongue at us.
“Sneasel, icy wind!” Sneasel let out a shrill cry and out of nowhere, the winds began to surge around us. A colossal wind followed and hit us. I looked behind me and noticed Emily was hugging the wall in order to be not blown away by the wind.
Me on the other hand, was blown away by the wind since I wasn’t holding into anything. I felt a sharp pain on my back and on the back of my head as I was slammed to the wall. I cried out in pain as I fell down to the floor as the attack ended.
I looked up and Gabby was still holding on by a thread. She was wheezing and gasping as she struggled to stay up. I felt a hand help me up when I tried to stand up. Emily was helping me up.
“Thanks,” I said as finally stood up and dusted myself. My hands were a bit shaken and my knees were trembling.
She smiled back at me. “Don’t give up yet.”
I nodded and smiled at her as she let go of my arm. I walked up and readied myself. “Recover!” I yelled with a shaky voice.
Gabby glowed a bright blue color. That bright color immediately dispersed itself, revealing a fully healed Gabby.
“Very good,” Lyn smirked at me. “That’s a very good strategy. But how can you match my Sneasel’s speed?”
“I’m not sure…but I’ll find a way,” I replied back at her. “G—Gabby, hydro pump!”
Gabby fired another hydro pump to Sneasel but it dodged the attack once more. Again, Sneasel advanced towards Gabby once more with its claws outstretched and ready. It let out its shrill war cry as it advanced towards Gabby. The attack connected and Gabby yelled back in pain as Sneasel somersaulted back again.
“This is useless…” I thought to myself as I gripped my fist. “How am I supposed to beat it with that speed.”
“Icy wind!”
“That’s it!” I yelled out loud. “Mirror coat!”
I could see the violent winds surging towards Gabby. I could see the wind and the snow blowing towards Gabby and then reflect back towards Lyn and her Sneasel. I yelled triumphantly as the attack was successfully executed.
As the winds cleared, Sneasel was still awake, barely. It was holding itself up with one hand. Lyn was standing as if the attack didn’t faze her much. Her long dark hair was the only one that seems to have been harmed by the attack since it was disheveled and let loose.
“Impressive,” She simply muttered as she eyed me closely. Her Sneasel was still gasping for air in front of her. “I fell for that trick twice,” She smiled.
I smiled back, trying to stay calm. Gabby was tired from the continuous attacks from Sneasel even though she recovered from the previous attacks. “Gabby, let’s do this!” I yelled, trying to boost her morale.
Gabby let out a cry of appreciation and readied herself. “Blizzard!” She inhaled and let out a powerful cry that rattled the whole gym. Winds came out from her direction towards Sneasel. Snow mixed with the winds buffeted Sneasel. I could see through the winds and the ice that Sneasel was getting beaten down.
Then, the winds ceased and ice was all over the place. Sneasel was lying on the ground, fainted from the powerful attack. Lyn returned it immediately and took out another Pokéball. She paused and hesitated and glanced at the Pokéball. Then, she threw it immediately. Out came a large red Pokémon with huge claws and a huge, yellow star on its forehead. It glared at Gabby with its menacing eyes.
Before I could pull out my Pokédex, Lyn introduced it to me. “This is a Crawdaunt. I’m sure you’ve never seen one before…”
I nodded my head. This one’s a real challenge for me since I don’t know what type it is yet. It’s most likely a dark type like most of Lyn’s Pokémon are…but I’m not completely sure.
“Okay, Gabby, recover!” A bright blue light covered Gabby. Then, in a blink of an eye, the light dispersed in many different colored drops then disappeared. Gabby now recovered from her previous injuries. “Your turn,”
“That’s the spirit!” Lyn smiled and then commanded an attack. “Crabhammer!” She yelled while pointing at Gabby.
Her Crawdaunt scurried across the battlefield in quite an amazing speed. I was letting it come close so that I can counter attack it. Crabhammer must be a physical attack…that was what I thought at first. Crawdaunt was five feet away from Gabby when it suddenly stopped and stretched its arms. I was shocked when its massive claws stretched and slammed it on Gabby. Gabby recoiled and tried to recover from shock and from the massive damage from the attack.
“What the heck was that?” I yelled but Lyn already made Gabby open for another attack.
“Crunch!” Crawdaunt stretched its two claws this time and snapped them on Gabby. The massive attack made Gabby faint.
I returned Gabby immediately. “Thanks,” I said to her while she was in her Great ball. “You did a great job.” I took out another Great ball. And this time, I’m not going to let go of this battle so easily. “Damian!”
My Scizor responded as it came out from its container and landed on the floor with a metallic thud. It glared at Crawdaunt with its shining eyes and snapped its two red pincers at it. Now it’s my turn to attack. “Metal claw!”
With its metallic wings, Damian sped towards Crawdaunt. He stretched his arms wide, waving his menacing, red claws at Crawdaunt. Before the attack could land, Crawdaunt immediately caught the attack.
“What the—?” Crawdaunt grabbed both of Damian’s pincers. It then followed with a successful counter attack blowing enormous amounts of bubbles towards Damian. The attack was so fierce that Damian was knocked back to where he started. Damian grabbed to the ground, stopping himself from skidding further.
“You were reckless,” Lyn chided while she stroked her hair in a lazy fashion. “You shouldn’t be attacking mindlessly,”
“I know that!” I yelled. I was getting pretty much frustrated. This is giving me quite a challenge. I was trying to find out what Crawdaunt’s weakness is. I wanted to take out my Pokédex but I had a sudden urge that told me not to. “Damian, double team!” I yelled.
Damian multiplied immediately into many other forms, surrounding Crawdaunt. All forms of Damian swung their arms fiercely at Crawdaunt. I looked at Lyn to expect a wave of desperation in her face. I was wrong when I could see a smirk of satisfaction instead.
“Crabhammer!” She yelled.
Crawdaunt immediately stretched both of its arms in opposite directions. It hit two false Scizors. I was about to call an attack but Crawdaunt wasn’t finished. It turned around, into a 360-degree spin, hitting all Scizors. Damian was immediately hit by the attack and was dragged by the massive claw of Crawdaunt.
“Damian, hold it back!” I yelled. Damian responded and flapped its wings, trying to push back the Crabhammer attack. I didn’t notice that Crawdaunt was spinning faster and faster and Damian was flapping his wings faster and faster, too.
I could see in a big circular wave of red what was happening. Crawdaunt was spinning as fast as it could with its flailing arms while Damian was struggling to stop it. Finally, Damian managed to land its feet on the floor. His feet landed on the floor hard as rocks and tiles were thrown everywhere. I could see his solid red wings flap harder and harder.
At the same time, Crawdaunt was spinning slower and slower. It was getting busy, and at the same time, Damian was forcing it to stop. Finally, after a few seconds of spinning aimlessly, Crawdaunt finally stopped dizzily. Damian recovered immediately from the attack and flew up towards Crawdaunt and slashed it with his metal claws.
“That’s it, Damian!” I yelled. “Slash!”
After multiple slashes, Damian’s claw glowed and with a sudden final blow, Damian slashed Crawdaunt fiercely that it flew back to Lyn. She returned her Crawdaunt immediately and readied her next Pokémon.
The battlefield lay in great destruction. A huge circle marked the place where Damian struggled to get away from Crawdaunt’s grasp. I sighed with relief, as the fourth Pokémon was defeated…two more left…

Chapter 68: Twin Hearted (part three)
I could see Lyn take out another Pokéball. I was shocked to see her next Pokémon to be a huge Pokémon with a long neck and menacing face and blood red wings. Its stubby legs pounded the ground and its blood red wings flapped and created a strong breeze of wind towards me. It slammed its long, fat tail on the ground causing it to shake all of the sudden.
I looked at Damian and he was holding up his arms to shield his eyes. The huge blue Pokémon looked down at Damian with menacing eyes. Suddenly, I felt a lot inferior compared to it. I was somehow intimidated and I felt myself weaker as seconds go by. “W—what is that thing?” I stammered weakly.
“It’s a Salmenace, Gary. These are rare dragon types in Hoenn,” Lyn smiled. “And they’re not rare for nothing, you know.”
I immediately knew that this would be a strong adversary. Damian was simply dwarfed by the colossal Salmenace. Before I could act a move, Lyn already started.
“Fly up!” Salmenace obeyed by flapping its wings and creating huge dusty gusts. I covered my eyes so that dust won’t enter in them. Salmenace might look heavy but its powerful wings lifted him up. Airborne, Salmenace looked even more intimidating than before.
I was trying to think up a way to beat Salmenace and I’m sure it’s a dragon type…it’s just too bad that I used up Gabby already. “Damian, double team!” I yelled. “This time, line up!”
Damian nodded his head and multiplied as many as possible and lined up horizontally, facing Lyn like what Noctowl did previously. I might be able to match Damian’s speed to Salmenace’s.
“Pity,” I heard Lyn mutter out loudly. “Salmenace, fly down and attack starting from the side!”
I smirked as she fell for the trap. Salmenace did fly down and started from the side but this time, I commanded the Damian copies to disperse immediately. Before Salmenace could hit any of the Scizors, they immediately dispersed. Out of confusion, Salmenace slowed down immediately.
“Attack!” I yelled. All of Damian’s copies rushed towards the defenseless Salmenace and began slashing it with total fury. Salmenace roared in pain as it flew up, shaking off the Scizors.
“Dragon claw!” Lyn’s command echoed around the battlefield.
I looked up and Salmenace was burning in a bright orange flame. It let out an ear-splitting roar and with great agility, it surged downwards with its feet ready for an attack.
“Ready?” I yelled to my Damian copies. All of them nodded at the same time. As they did, one Damian copy came out of the group and flew up towards Salmenace. The heat was so intense, it reflected on the Scizor’s shining body. I could see Lyn’s Salmenace ready itself to slash the Scizor. As the two reached the point to where Salmenace could attack, Salmenace launched out its dragon claw attack at the Scizor. However, that Scizor was actually a fake one.
As the flames dispersed from Salmenace, it didn’t notice that other Scizors surrounding it. With slashes of fury, they attacked Salmenace relentlessly. Salmenace let out a frustrated roar and flew down.
“Fire blast!” Lyn yelled.
Before, I was used to see a small wheel of fire blast from other Pokémon. So in that case, all I had to do is just let the fire blast hit one of the fake Damians. What I wasn’t prepared for was that Salmenace shot out a huge fire blast that engulfed all Damian copies.
“No!” I yelled as the smoke cleared. All the Damian copies were gone and what was left was now the real Damian with its charred black body. He collapsed to the floor quickly with a horrid metal thud.
I returned Damian and readied my next Pokémon. This time, I sent out Abby. I’m sure Salmenace isn’t a dragon type and a dark type at the same time. I haven’t heard that kind of Pokémon before. Abby waved her spoons as I released her from her Pokéball.
“So you’ve been hiding your psychic Pokémon all the time, eh?” Lyn smirked. “Taking advantage of this time because I don’t have a dark Pokémon yet?”
I let out a subtle nod so that Lyn won’t figure out my strategy. Lyn simply smirked as she pointed at Abby and me. “Fire blast!”
Salmenace, who was at the ground now, inhaled and let out a huge blast of fire towards Abby…and me!
‘Get away!’ I heard Abby yell as she formed a light screen in front of her. Obviously, she couldn’t handle the whole blast since her barrier was starting to crack. ‘Take her and move away!’
I looked back and Emily had a terrified expression on her face. I immediately ran towards Emily and grabbed her hand. I tried to run but she was frozen in terror.
‘Hurry, master!’ Abby yelled. I could see cracks growing wider and bigger.
I had no choice but to pick her legs and lifted her up I didn’t hesitate as I ran towards the side, carrying her. Abby recognized immediately that I wasn’t there anymore because she immediately teleported out of the way. The huge blast was released and it crashed on the wall. The heat was so intense I felt it on my face and it created a powerful wind that raged in the whole stadium.
As the smoke cleared, I could see the blackened wall with the effect of the humongous fire blast. Abby was now standing to where she was, unharmed. Then, I noticed that I was still carrying Emily. She looked at me with curious eyes twinkling. “Gary…” She whispered.
I smiled back at her and set her down. “Can you stand?”
She nodded as she stood with her shaking knees. “I’m…I’m fine…” She said soberly as she clung to my sleeve. Then, she released me slowly. It was strange since her eyes remained transfixed to mine as she released me.
“I’m continuing this,” I said as I left her and stormed back to my position. “Why did you hit me with that?” I yelled at Lyn.
“Oh I was just testing you Alakazam. I’m sure it’s stronger than others,” She simply smiled as she folded her arms and her eyes were closed. But then she opened them and they transfixed to mine. “Am I right?”
“Well…sorta…” I replied after I flinched. “But you didn’t have to attack me…”
“Enough, it’s your turn!”
Something was weird going on with Lyn. I know her as a friendly gym leader but…she seems to be really competitive and fierce.
“Abby, psychic!” I yelled out loud.
Abby crossed her twin spoons and sent out an invisible wave that crushed surrounding pebbles from the previous round. The attack was a direct hit and Salmenace flinched.
“Abby, ice punch!” Abby obeyed when she glided forward towards the flinched Salmenace and with a glowing blue fist and gathered frost, it punched Salmenace’s massive head.
Salmenace roared as it moved back a few feet. Abby immediately teleported back to where she was before and readied herself.
“Fly,” Lyn yelled out a simply command. Again, Salmenace flapped its powerful wings, making it airborne again. Now, this will be a challenge for me since I don’t know if Abby could do well in mid air combat.
I had no other choice but to command an attack. “Psychic!” I yelled pointing towards Salmenace. Abby sent out a powerful psychic attack towards Salmenace.
“Fire blast!” Lyn yelled.
Salmenace sent out another powerful fire blast towards Abby. But this time, the attack was stopped by the psychic attack. The fire blast made the psychic attack visible. The raging orange fire clashed with the purple psychic wave. Obviously, the psychic wave overpowered the fire blast and swallowed the whole fire blast.
“What the—?” Lyn yelled in amazement.
“Teleport and use ice punch!” I yelled to Abby.
Abby obeyed and teleported in front of the airborne Salmenace and charged up her attack. But before she could throw the punch, Lyn already commanded the attack.
“Crunch!”
As Abby launched the attack, Salmenace caught the attack with its mouth. Its mouth began to freeze as Abby struggled to break free.
“Teleport!”
Abby obeyed and disappeared and returned to where she was standing from before. Salmenace landed as it shook its head violently trying to unseal its mouth.
“Take it off with fire blast!”
Lyn yelled out loud.
Oh no, she’s not going to do it again… “Psychic!”
Salmenace’s mouth burst into flames and followed with another blast of orange flame. The attack was followed by Abby’s psychic attack. Again, the two forces clashed, engulfing at each other. Abby’s psychic attack proved to be stubborn since it swallowed up the fire blast again.
“This is going nowhere,” I thought to myself. “There should be a way to defeat this Salmenace…but how?”
“Alakazam, psychic!” I yelled while pointing at Salmenace.
I heard a small sigh from Lyn. “When will he learn? Fire blast!”
Abby sent out a powerful psychic attack and at the same time, Salmenace fired its fire blast towards Abby.
‘Teleport!’ I thought through my mind. ‘Behind Salmenace and hit it with ice punch!’
Abby didn’t reply but obeyed my command since she teleported from behind Salmenace and slammed her glowing blue fist across the back of Salmenace’s head. It let out a loud roar. The back of Salmenace’s head froze immediately as it screamed in pain.
“Abby, go to the side and fire a psychic attack!” I yelled. Abby obeyed me and glided to the side of Salmenace, away from the fire blast’s range and fired a powerful psychic attack. The attack was so strong it shattered the ice wrapped around Salmenace’s neck. This time, the attack was able to deal enough damage to knock out Salmenace. It collapsed to the floor with a loud thud that shook the earth. It lay on the ground with saliva dripping from its mouth and creating a huge puddle.
Abby returned immediately to her previous position and waited for Lyn’s next Pokémon. ‘This is it,’ I said to her through my thoughts. ‘It’s her last Pokémon,’ She nodded and waited patiently.
“Nicely done, Gary,” Lyn said while smiling and returning her Salmenace. “Now, prepare yourself!” She threw her final Pokéball…and I know that this will be her strongest one…or is it?

Chapter 69: The Heights
I could see the red and white sphere being thrown in the air. Then, out from the cloud of explosion, which came out of the Pokéball, a tall, white fury Pokémon with a dark sharp blade came out. It looked at me with its docile face. It clawed the ground with its paws, as its docile eyes remained transfixed to my eyes.
“Absol,” Lyn began as she stood in her thinking position—she folded her arms and looked down with her eyes closed. “This is a dark Pokémon, if you might ask. They’re very vicious even though they might seem to look docile.”
I nodded as I followed her description of her Absol. It’s a dark Pokémon…a weakness to Abby…I’m not quite sure if I should withdraw Abby now but I need to conserve time. If I use Abby and not the others, I might be able to defeat this Absol.
“Okay, I’m going first! Ice punch!” I yelled loudly. My voice reverberated across the whole stadium.
Abby responded with a quick glide towards Absol. Her right fist turned icy blue and frost began to circulate around it. Absol simply stared at the Alakazam that was advancing towards it. Before the ice punch could connect, Absol leapt up really high and landed on the other side with its large blade protruding in a slashing position. It slashed Abby from behind.
Abby recoiled as she teleported back to where she was, gasping for breath. I know Alakazams have weak defenses…and Absol’s attack must’ve done some massive damage on Abby.
“Absols have a very powerful attack power, if I might add.” Lyn chuckled. “Psychics have low defense…they also have a weakness to dark type Pokémon…which makes Absol fit for destroying Psychic types.
I grunted as I scratched my hair. This one won’t be easy… “Recover!” A blue aura emitted from Abby. Then, the aura dispersed away from Abby into small water like drops of glowing blue.
“That won’t help you anything,” Lyn commented. “I’ll let your Alakazam one more turn and let it attack my Absol,”
I’m sure she wants me to fall for a trap. I’m sure of it since I can feel it in my gut. But what else could I do? None in my Alakazam’s moves could easily defeat its speed and power. “Return!”
I felt Abby’s Pokéball bounce back in my hand. I took out my Great Ball and threw it in mid-air. A Pokémon with good defense, even though it may lack speed, might win this battle. Out from the smoke of my Great Ball, came out Doga, my Steelix.
I looked at Emily and she stared at Doge in amazement. I bet she still remembered that she was the one who helped me capture this Pokémon from before. Doga roared loudly that it shook the panes of the windows in the whole gym. He slammed his metal tail to the destroyed floor sending out a loud metallic sound. It glared down at the Absol, who simply stared back at it with its docile eyes.
“Well chosen,” Lyn smirked. “But…you still haven’t won the battle. Slash!”
As she said the first letter of her attack, Absol quickly raced towards Doga and leapt up at a tall height, reaching Doga’s face, and slashed it fiercely with its blade. The attack didn’t seem to faze Doga since it just shook off the attack and simply nudged Absol away with its tail.
“Yeah! That’s right!” I yelled out loud. “Doga, iron tail!”
Doga roared as he brandished his gleaming tail at Absol. Then, in a quick motion, it slammed it down to where Absol was. The attack almost hit Absol but it was still completely dodged by it.
“Almost!” I shouted out loud. “Keep it coming!”
“Absol, sunny day!” Lyn yelled.
Outside, I could see the sun brighten all of the sudden. The rays of the sun plunged inside immediately and lit the whole battlefield. It was so bright I had to shield my eyes in order to see what’s beyond me. Why did she use sunny day? That question floated in my mind as I though of my next attack.
“Earthquake!” I yelled out loud through the gleaming rays of the sun.
Doga’s silhouette waved its tail and then suddenly slammed it to the ground with a powerful force. The ground shook violently as I fell on my knees. The gym lamps up above swayed violently and the whole battlefield started to gain cracks on the ground all around it.
As Doga ended his attack, I noticed that Absol survived the attack even though it was a massive one…it must be the strongest earthquake I’ve ever felt. Absol was gasping and wheezing from the attack. Well that was quite easy…Absol could attack Doga but it wouldn’t affect it much. That was what I wasn’t prepared for…
“Absol, fire blast!” Out from that Pokémon came a huge wheel of fire heading towards Doga. The attack was so powerful I could feel the heat of the fire blast surging through my body. It was even stronger than Salmenace’s fire blast!
The good thing is that Doga was large enough to take the whole attack and the fire blast didn’t go to me. Doga’s metal head slammed to the floor with a loud metal thud. It let out a small growl as it fainted from the attack. Its blackened body was the result of the massive fire blast. Smoke was coming out of Doga’s body as I returned his to his Pokéball.
“How did you do that?” I yelled as I felt the Pokéball bounce back to my hand. “Why is your Absol’s fire blast so powerful?”
Lyn laughed out loud. Her laughter could be heard in the halls, echoing deeper and deeper. “Look closely, Gary,” She said as she restrained herself from her laughter. “Look closely at Absol.”
I did what she suggested and observed Absol. I noticed something odd…it was holding something in its mouth. It looked like a black piece of wood…it was charcoal!
“You do know that charcoal heightens fire attacks, do you? Added with sunny day, which increases the power of fire type attacks, I’m sure that’s enough to destroy your Steelix.”
I groaned as I took out another Pokéball. Using Abby would be risky…so this time, I’ll try to use my last choice. “Blaze!” I yelled as I threw my Pokéball. Smoke immediately came out from my Pokéball and out came my Charizard. It looked menacingly down at Absol and flapped its orange wings. His claws were clutching his belly and waved his fiery tail. He stomped the ground, which caused the floor to crack a bit.
“So you’ve evolved your Charmander, eh? Impressive!” Lyn exclaimed. “But how does it fare against me Absol? Slash!”
I knew Absol would advance the moment Lyn would sound out the first letter of her attack. I was also quick enough to say my command. “Fly!”
Blaze flew up high with his powerful wings, blowing dust away from around it. Absol stopped immediately since it wasn’t able to reach Blaze. But then, it leapt up high and readied to attack.
“Dodge it and grab it, Blaze!” I yelled before it could crash its huge blade at Blaze.
Blaze grabbed its blade and at the same time, grab on of its leg.
“Throw it down!” I yelled.
Blaze obeyed and spun around with great speed. I saw Lyn open her mouth to call out an attack but she was too late. Blaze threw Absol downwards with a powerful force. I thought we won the battle but it wasn’t quite over…the moment Absol landed on the floor, it already landed on all its feet.
“Absol, slash!”
Absol just landed on its feet when Lyn called out the attack. It obeyed quickly when it used the momentum to land and converted it to power—power for jumping back. It jumped faster now and I only have a split second decision to do it.
“Flamethrower!”
Blaze didn’t have time to inhale for the attack. Before it could throw it out, Absol’s attack connected and Blaze was severely wounded from the attack. The slash attack started from Blaze’s belly and it went up to his neck and into his face. Blaze roared in pain as it crashed down to the floor, coughing and hacking from the impact of the slash attack on his neck. Absol landed softly on its feet on the other side and then ran back to where it was in the beginning of the battle.
“Had enough?” Lyn smirked with pride. “I hope Blaze isn’t that weak…”
“No he’s not!” I yelled back then turned my attention to Blaze. “Blaze, you alright?”
Blaze nodded as he stood up and roared loudly at Absol. The slash mark was bleeding very badly. I’m not sure if Blaze could handle this battle…
“Great! Now fly up again!” Blaze obeyed and flapped his wings again until he was airborne.
“Slash!” Lyn commanded her Absol. It obeyed quickly once again and advanced towards Blaze with great speed. Then, it stopped suddenly jumped up high and readied to strike Blaze once more. This time, I knew what was going to happen.
“Flamethrower!” I yelled out loud amidst of Blaze’s roar. It was just right timing and Blaze managed to pullout a powerful flamethrower before Absol could reach him.
Absol let out a painful cry as it was thrown back by the flamethrower. Now is my advantage to attack the defenseless Absol.
“Blaze, wing attack!” Blaze obeyed and surge downwards with his heavy body towards Absol. Blaze then swooped down with a whoosh and quickly hit Absol with his wings, dragging it along the way and then pushing Absol off to the wall. But then, I wasn’t expecting Absol to recoil from the wall and comeback towards Blaze.
“Slash!” Lyn yelled as Absol screamed its war cry while it flew towards Blaze with great speed.
Luckily, I had enough time to react. “Fly down, Blaze, and use flamethrower upward!” Had enough time to fly down, too. When Absol was in range of Blaze’s flamethrower, Blaze fired a blast upwards at Absol.
Absol screamed in pain as fell down to the floor with its blackened body. Blaze simply flew back to where it was before and roared at it.
“This isn’t over yet,” Lyn shouted. “Fire blast!”
I knew she was going to pull that out. I ran as fast as I could to the side of the stadium and Blaze flew next to me, avoiding the fire blast. Then, another fire blast followed and Blaze and I ran from side to side, avoiding the fire blasts. There could be a way to weaken the fire blasts…my prayer was answered when the room dimmed. I knew at that moment that sunny day’s effect has ended.
“Now is our chance! Crush claw!” I yelled as I noticed Absol advance at us immediately as the sun weakened. My Charizard flew towards Absol with two glowing claws. “Hit it on the face!” I yelled.
Lyn didn’t know what my plan was but thinking that it was just a foolish way to attack Absol…but she was wrong. As Absol met Blaze’s range, it was greeted by two sharp slashes to the face. The last one so powerful, it knocked out the charcoal from its mouth. Then, blaze glided towards the charcoal and quickly picked it up.
“Hey! What did you?” Lyn yelled angrily. “You’re not supposed to do that!”
“You didn’t say I couldn’t do it,” I corrected her. “You didn’t say anything about stealing items in the rules…”
Lyn gritted her teeth as she accepted the truth. Blaze simply held the charcoal in its mouth. If Lyn would use sunny day again, her Absol would be doomed. But my Charizard is already strong with the charcoal.
“Razor wind!” Lyn commanded her Absol. Her Absol waved its blade into a circle and waved it faster and faster until I could feel wind circulating around the arena. The wind was so powerful dust was flying all around. I shielded my eyes and commanded Blaze to fly…bad idea.
As soon as Blaze was in flight, a huge powerful wind followed and lifted me out of my feet and slammed me to the wall. The wind also hit Blaze and knocked him out of the air and made him fall down to the floor with a loud thud.
I slumped down to the floor, coughing and hacking. It was a powerful attack that made me feel dizzy. I shook my head and my legs were trembling.
“Gary!” I heard Emily yell from the side. She was really concerned about me this time even though she was silent through the whole battle.
I looked at her and smiled even though I was clutching my head in pain. “Don’t worry! I’ll be fine!” I yelled to her.
She looked at me with a concerned look and smiled. “Be careful…”
I nodded and walked to my previous position. “Blaze, you okay?” Blaze stood up with his hands shaking in pain. He nodded as he growled in pain and then shook his head to stay in focus.
Before Blaze could fully recover from the attack, Absol was in the move again. I didn’t hear Lyn attack but I’m sure she said something…Absol was moving towards us at an incredible speed. Before I could react, he already slashed Blaze. My Charizard flinched and moved one step back.
I thought Absol stopped after the attack but I was so wrong. Absol moved forward again and slashed Blaze one more time. Blaze screamed in pain as slash attack hit him in the belly. Then came another slash attack…then another…then another…more slashes from Absol arrived again and again…Blaze could faint any moment if I didn’t do anything.
“Blaze!” I yelled at the top of my lungs. “Catch it!”
Before the final slash could be dealt, Blaze immediately caught it with both hands. It gripped it tightly as Absol struggled to break free.
“Flamethrower!” I yelled. Blaze inhaled for two seconds and then sent out a massive flamethrower towards Absol. The power and force of the attack slammed Absol to the wall, blacking the metallic looking surface. As Blaze finished the attack, Absol’s blackened body slumped to the ground. It fainted.
“YES!” I yelled after a moment’s pause. Blaze looked back at me happily with the scars of the battle; a long gash rose up from his belly and to his right eye. Then, there were four other bloody gashes on his belly.
“Gary!” Emily yelled as she ran up to me and suddenly hugged me when she reached me. “You did it!”
I was shocked since she wrapped her arms around me so tightly.
“You did it! You did it! You did it!” She exclaimed happily as I let myself fall on the floor. I could feel her weight down at my body as she laughed happily.
“Whoa!” I replied as I sat up. “Easy now…” I looked at Blaze and he seems to be laughing at us but suddenly stopped when I noticed him laughing.
“Oh, sorry…” Emily said as she let go of me. “I was…a bit excited…” She blushed and stood up. I then stood up myself even though I was still shaking a bit.
“Congrats!” I heard Lyn said and the sound of slow clapping next to me. I looked to my side and Lyn was standing there with a smile in her face. “A battle well fought…” She placed her hand in her pocket and then took out a small, green badge that looked like a feather. “Your final badge…”
I took it from her hand and felt the final wave of accomplishment. Even though my journey wasn’t about collecting badges, I felt that this was one of my greatest achievements yet… “Thanks,” I smiled back at Lyn.
“No, thank you!” She suddenly replied. “That was a great battle and I haven’t felt something like that in a long time!”
I was still grinning as I pocketed my badge. But something caught my eye. Behind Lyn, I could see someone standing there. Michelle gripped her fist as she held back her tears. She looked angrily at me and then stormed out of the stadium.
“Michelle? Michelle!” I yelled as I returned Blaze immediately.
Lyn looked at me with a puzzled look and Emily did, too. I ran out of the stadium as fast as I could to follow Michelle…this has gotten out of hand…

Chapter 70: Betrayal and Mistrust
“Michelle!” I yelled. My voice echoed through the corridors as I chased her. I could hear her footsteps as she ran down the hallway. Her sobs could be heard resounding through the corridor. “Michelle, wait!”
She didn’t wait or stop. She kept on running until she reached our room. Michelle didn’t close the door but instead let her body fall on the bed, sobbing bitterly as she clutched the blankets.
“Michelle…” I whispered as I approached her from the door. “What’s wrong?”
She was still crying and refused to answer my question. I sat next to her and place my hand over her head.
“Tell me what’s wrong…”
She tried to stop crying but instead chocked as she did and continued to cry. I was desperate this time since I didn’t know how to comfort her.
“What’s wrong? Was it something I did? I’m sorry then…”
She then looked up at me with her reddened eyes. Her tears continued to run down her cheeks as she sniffed and tried to talk.
“You…you said we’re going to find my brother first…” She sobbed. “You said that you’d find my brother first!”
“But…”
“You promised me!” She yelled out loud. “You couldn’t remember?”
I felt guilt immediately. It was true that I promised her that morning that I’d find Nick before doing anything else. It completely slipped my mind…
“I’m sorry…I’m really sorry, Michelle. I didn’t remember…”
“Stupid!” She yelled as she sat up and shoving my hand away from her shoulder. “Don’t touch me! You broke your promise…” She continued to sob as she wiped her tears away with her sleeve. She then stood up with her trembling fists and glared at me. “Gary, you…you’ve changed me so much…and now…you couldn’t even find my brother first before you battled that stupid gym leader!”
“But…I’m really sorry. I didn’t really remember…” As I tried to calm her down, as I stood up but she just drew near to the mirror on the left side of me. The tall mirror was against the wall and she looked at it.
“I couldn’t forgive you Gary…I thought you were kind and you never broke your promises…”
“Hey, nobody’s perfect, you know!” I interrupted her as I raised my voice. “I can’t promise you everything!”
“Shut up!” Michelle screamed as she slammed her fist at the mirror. She was so angry that she cracked the mirror.
I flinched as she slammed her fist on it. Tiny mirror shards flew across the room and lay strewn on the floor. “Michelle, you’ll hurt yourself,”
“I don’t care!” She yelled back at me. “I don’t care if I get hurt! You don’t care about me or my brother!” She then slammed her fist again. This time, the whole mirror cracked. Blood oozed down the mirror as she cried. “No one cares…about me…” She sobbed. “Someone loves my brother…but…you don’t love me…”
She lifted her fist again as she was about to slam it into the mirror but now I was fast enough to hold it. I held her fist, which was bleeding profusely.
“Let me go! I want to die!” She yelled out loud. “The world doesn’t care about me so let me die!”
“Michelle, stop it!” I yelled at her. “I still care even if I don’t love you! You’re still my friend!”
She was then silent. She looked down as I felt her fist loosen.
“Michelle, it’s okay…it’s okay…” I whispered as I wrapped my arms around her. “I still care…”
She wasn’t sobbing anymore nor crying. Silence enveloped the room…but then, I heard something. It was a muffling sound from somewhere. I quickly released Michelle and tried to find the source of the sound. Then, I heard the clanging of chains against concrete.
“Do you hear that?” I asked her.
She nodded slowly in reply. It was coming from somewhere nearby. Finally, our sights came upon the shattered window. The cracked surface was encompassing a small hole. I peered inside and saw something move. It was a secret room.
“Okay, I’m going to kick this open,”
She nodded as she stood back. I moved to the other side of the room and readied myself. Then, I ran up quickly to the window and launched my foot through the window. A loud shatter echoed in my mind as I fell into the other room. I fell down face first with a groan of pain.
As I stood up, I looked behind me and Michelle was peering from the outside of the room. Then, I heard the muffling sounds louder. In the pitch darkness of this room, I couldn’t see anything but a shadowy lump in the end of the small room and the sounds of chains clanging.
I walked to the shadowy figure, which was mumbling out loud. I squinted my eyes and noticed that it was a person. I reached out my hand, hoping that it wasn’t another possessed person that Pryce must be using but instead, I felt someone’s face.
“Hey!” He mumbled loudly. I felt a piece of cloth wrapped around his mouth. The voice was so familiar, the hairs in the back of my neck stood up. I quickly grabbed the person’s shackled arms and dragged the person towards the light.
As the light touched the person’s face, I knew immediately the person whom we were looking for.
“Nick!” Michelle yelled as she grabbed the cloth and ripped it away from his mouth. “What were you doing there?”
Nick looked pale and dirty. It was as if he hadn’t eaten in a long time. He spat on the ground bitterly and stammered.
“What…what are you guys doing here? Where is she? She tricked me!” He stammered.
“What? Who’s she?” I asked him as I tried to pull his chains apart.
“Ah! That hurts! She? The gym leader! She knocked me out!” He yelled in pain.
I stared at him with a puzzled look. “What’s wrong with Lyn?” I asked him.
“She knocked me out before I can challenge her! When I woke up, I found myself in there!” He yelled as he tried to loosen himself from the chains.
“I don’t get it? Why would Lyn do that?”
That was soon to be answered when Lyn herself stood in the doorway. “Reasons,” She smirked as she folded her arms and leaned against the doorway.
I looked up in shock. “What does this mean, Lyn?” I demanded her as I stood up. Michelle was still tending to her brother, who was struggling to break loose.
“Oh, Gary…you’ve always been to hero. The reasons are simple really…” She glared at me maliciously. “Let me tell you this: I was once a member of the masked children or masked brigade…whatever they call it before. I was one of the master’s most loyal subordinates. But when he disappeared, we were all disbanded. I feared that the people would hunt us, but they didn’t. All hope seems lost until the master returned fifteen years ago…” She then chuckled. “Yes, yes. Fifteen years ago. I was so happy because I was the first one to meet him that day. At first, we couldn’t believe our eyes…but he was so real! He set up plans of revenge on the seven children who had defeated him…two of them blood traitors!”
“Wh—what’s your point?” I stammered.
“The point, Gary? The point is that…the master has returned and is seeking revenge. When we tried to kill those seven once more…we have failed because of those three…” She growled. The tone of her voice suddenly changed when she referred to “those three.”
“We almost did it! Killed them I wished! But no…we didn’t managed to carry out the plan…so instead all of us went into hiding. I was stationed here in Viridian city gym replacing Green…your father and one of the seven!”
It dawned in me. Those seven I knew at once who they were. They were my parents and their friends.
“On the fourth year, master was weakened because he was exposed to the atmosphere of this world for a long time…he needed to be renewed with new blood…blood of a child!”
“What are you talking about?” I yelled at her out loud.
“Don’t you get it, Gary? I’m sure you’ve seen yourself before. The master kidnapped you in order to use your blood to regain energy. But your father and his friends rescued you…at the cost of his life!” Lyn then laughed at me, mockingly. “It was foolish of him to save a doomed life and sacrifice his,”
I felt an uneasy grip within myself. My father’s life? It couldn’t be! “My dad isn’t dead!” I yelled at her, interrupting her laughter.
“Oh Gary, you couldn’t accept all of the horrible truth, couldn’t you? After all, your father fought so valiantly and so courageously to take you away from the master’s grasp.” She then laughed once more. The laughter ringed in my mind as I shook my head violently.
“My father isn’t dead at all!” I yelled to her. “He’s not dead! He’s not dead!” I shouted.
Michelle had stopped helping Nick loosen the chains and Nick stopped struggling. Both of them stared at me as if I was a deranged maniac.
“He is, Gary! I was there myself and witnessed it with these very eyes. He pushed my master into those gates…and if only…his friend would’ve helped him, he could’ve been saved.”
My insides were churning with rage and anger. “What do you mean?”
“You father’s friend, Red. He would’ve saved him. He was so close and yet he hesitated…hesitated at the very moment he could’ve grabbed his hand…” She mocked me as she enjoyed seeing the anger in my face.
I then remembered what Makoto said. At first, I didn’t pay attention to what he said. But this time, it was all clear to me now. Red could’ve saved my father…he should have grabbed his hand before he was thrown into that vortex I’ve seen in my vision. He could’ve saved him! I trusted him and after all…he actually betrayed my father. Why? Makoto’s answer echoed in my head. Jealousy.
I couldn’t speak. The culprit of my father’s disappearance was Red after all…no…possible death… I tried to shake off the fact that my father could be dead. My journey was all after all in vain.
“He’s not dead…” I whispered to myself. “He’s not dead!” I fell to the ground on my knees while pounding the floor. “He’s not dead!” I yelled out more loudly.
“Accept it!” Lyn mocked me. “He is dead. He won’t return and will never!” She then walked up to me. “Don’t make me hurt you, Gary, stand up and give in to the master.”
“What…what are you going to do to me?” I stammered, feeling all hope lost.
Lyn smirked and let out a hollow laugh. “Why would you ask me?” She smirked. “I bet you’ll be joining you father soon.”
“He’s not dead!” I yelled, as I stood up with my fist ready to punch her. I launched my fist towards her but she immediately blocked it, while grabbing it.
“Tsk, tsk. You shouldn’t have done that, Gary,”
I felt her grip suddenly tighten on my hand. “Don’t make me hurt you, Gary,” She warned me. “Or else, I’ll have to harm her, instead.”
I didn’t know what she meant by “her” but I soon found out when I noticed a masked man walk in front of the room, holding a fainted Emily bound in chains. The man was clearly possessed. He must be one of Pryce’s minions…he carried Emily in his arms. He looked at us blankly with his mask. The eyeholes of the mask were black and hollow…
“No! Emily!” I yelled as I loosened my fist. “What did you do to her?”
“Be quiet or I’ll harm her myself,” Lyn shouted at me. “As for you two,” She said while pointing at Nick and Michelle. “You will be joining Gary pretty soon,”

Chapter 71: Beginning of the End
We were bound in chains and thrown into some sort of room that I didn’t know existed in the gym. I landed hard on the cold, hard ground. I groaned in pain as I did. I somehow landed on my arm. I heard Nick and Michelle being thrown next to me, and then Emily. Then, I heard the doors close and then we were alone…
“Great,” I heard Nick mutter. “And I thought I was really going to get freed…”
“Didn’t know that Lyn was with Pryce,” I muttered as I struggled to sit up. They took away all of our Pokémon…but I know Abby could communicate with me at a distance, so I felt a bit confident.
After that, I didn’t hear anything but silence. I couldn’t see anything since we were still blindfolded and the only thing I could feel was someone’s clothes, probably Nick or Michelle’s. The flat, hard floor made me uncomfortable as I tried to stand up. But everything was in vain—I was bound on my shins and on my hands.
I let out a frustrated sigh as I lay down on the ground, face down. I didn’t feel despair as I did back then in the islands when Pryce captured us. Because this time, I was feeling that Abby would somehow talk to me at a distance so I began to think, hoping that Abby would hear me. I called her name in my head once then twice…there was no reply. They might have done something to her… My stomach lurched as I tried to stand up on my knees but failed miserably.
“It’s no use,” I hear Nick say out of the darkness. “I’ve tried this for two days now…”
I groaned as I accidentally hit my head on the stone floor. “Can someone help me here?” I muttered.
“There chains are too secure…I don’t think you’ll be able to brake free…” Nick said in reply to my futile struggles.
Then there was silence again. The only thing I could hear was the water dripping from somewhere around here. I crept closer to the person next to me. I was starting to feel cold and the ground just made me feel worse. Then, I heard a girl’s soft moan. It came from next to me. I then realized that it was Emily waking up.
“Emily?” I called out in the darkness. “Emily, is that you?”
“G—Gary?” She whispered fearfully as I heard chains clang in the darkness. “Gary, where are you?” She called out. Her voice was trembling and she must be scared…very scared.
“I’m right here, don’t worry!” I replied reassuringly as I felt her clothes brush across my arm. “Don’t worry, I’m here,” I felt her shivering next to me as she struggled to break free.
She let a worried moan as she tried to feel in the darkness. “Where are we?” She asked me.
“I don’t know…I don’t know…” I replied to her as I leaned closer to her.
The hours passed in silence. I finally noticed that Emily was back to sleep. As for the twins, I don’t know e
