The best out of the ones up there, though the effect might be a little too sharp. but still good.

http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss8/ComeClairty/Taggy.png
This is very empty, it's a hard stock to use, much easier for vertical tags but yeah, there really isn't enough going on in a major way to fill the space, you're just decorating it.

http://i46.tinypic.com/2vhysg7.png
In this, well, two focals is pretty hard to pull off, and I don't think you're quite there.
To do so, you have to make sure nothing else, literally nothing else can grab attention away from them, and in this the focals are a bit messy, making them fade into the background a bit too much and not stand out.

This (http://i50.tinypic.com/214civa.png) is perhaps my favourite among those..
It kind of fits the theme, time traveling and all, but it could use a little text here and there, and some tiny details..

Oh and if you're going to add some lighting effects in a tag similar to this (http://i49.tinypic.com/2e4kikg.png), you might want to set everything radiating out from the focal on colour dodge.

You need to work on bringing out the focal (http://i48.tinypic.com/33kg2zp.png) in your work too.
Other than that; you've become a lot better.

The pretty CSS is blinding my eyes; good job..
I guess. xD;

Hope to see more.

ALL ARE CLAIMABLE. LIMIT TO 3 ICONS PER MEMBER.

A few things got to me when I first saw this tag.
First thing I thought was that your render really isn't blending at all, kinda looks like it's just been wacked on. Secondly the blank space over there on the left is bugging me, it all just kinda drops off, ease into the edge of a tag I guess. Thirdly I think the background may be over-sharpened. Next time maybe apply image & manually sharpen/blur it yourself?
Other than that you're improving and it's nice.

moments.
March 23rd, 2010, 12:34 AM
Just going to rebut Dukey a bit here regarding the latest tag. :D
I think the render does actually blend into the background, the bottom right of the render blends wonderfully, without like smudging the foshizzle out of it and losing half your render, or without covering it too much.
That blank space I agree with, but my eye sees the perfect spot to place some big, bold text. Do it.
Lastly, I do also agree that the background could be a bit too sharp, especially to the left of her face.

So really I didn't rebut him that much, but this a nice tag, just a few things to make it pretty darn awesome. Nice work!

Awe man! ... I was going to ask if I could claim that Scizor set.

To be honest, you didn't really fix the tag. It was more like adding some orange lines to fill in the blank space. You should've added some fancy text instead. However, I must commend you that it was wonderfully made, but still could use a little bit of improvement.

Out of your latest tags, I think that the Scizor set was the best. It's so sexy that I'm tempted to just steal it right now. Then, the next best could possibly be the samurai & Growlithe set. It looks very cute.

About the Maylene set, what's up with that random, yellow light?

I had hoped to reply with an update but I guess I best clarify some things XD
Sorry about the Scizor set, I plan on using it but if I change my mind, I'll let you know right away.
The tag went under little editing I admit, but atm my PS crashes when I add text nine times out of ten due to the fact that I installed near 50,000 recently. The render was softend, you'll notice on a second glance I'm sure, I wanted it to blend a tad more rather than being over sharpened.
I'll admit the Maylene set isn't my best work but I probably should have touched up the render a small bit. The lighting was just something I added for effect rather than going with the plain and simple icons I see around.

Thanks for the comment, much appreciated, the C&C helps a lot, I really do value it XD I'll try make some more sets today if I find some renders than tickle my fancy.

Oh also, seeing as in I have two weeks off I'm gonna do some requests, icons and a tag.

Number of icons (1-4): 4
Text (optional but often doesn't work well on icons): Can you include the word "Jolt" onto one of the icons?

I like the concept on this latest one, however I feel you could've pulled off the space a fair bit better, there isn't much of a light source either, the direction of it is going everywhere.
The UP balloon aswell? Seems kinda uneccessary.

It's good, needs work though.

It certainly had gotten better since the last time I had first viewed your lp's.

I particularly liked this one (http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu99/IGavZI/Lajdsk.png) the most. You really brought out the colors for this lp and it was clearly shown in the kimono girl. What I question are the three, random lines shooting across the top of the lp.

Your lp of Darkrai and Cresselia (http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu99/IGavZI/Lunardreams.png) is also good. This is one of your newer works that show how much you have improved over the time. It's a shame that Darkrai has to be in the background.

Everything She Touches (http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu99/IGavZI/Everythingshetouchesturnstomagic.png): Did you get the stock from Sam? XD; I've seen him use this in one of his previous tag.

Duuude Abs. xAx Your LP's are to /die/ for!! [/fails hxc at LP's] The colors are so bright and the blend is really nice- though the Katy Perry one is feeling a little empty up in front, and your erasing jobs are kind of odd- like one the tag with the guy with the tattooed face- the render or whatever you put on top of him looks... like it was erased oddly. And then the eye on the back of the head of that one LP- odd blurry edges that make me think whatever was around the eye got soft brush erased out. =u= Perhaps more attention towards the erasures?

[/I know I'm so vague. I'm sorry. Dx]

You and Panda rock my world. This tag is so incredible- The white is easily my favorite part of this entire tag- and though for awhile I thought the hearts didn't fit, they're growing on me. Though I think it would've been nice if the hearts had been cut-outs rather than pink. <3 I'm sure you know this already, but this style is my favorite of all time- and I'm totally inspired to start pumping out some tags again. |D

And I remember long ago when you first started. ;u; You've really improved a lot! <3

Thanks for the compliment on the LP's XD Personally I feel much more accomplished when I make an LP people like :3 LP's are pretty hard though, you should keep at them for sure. Katy Perry one is terrible in my opinion, it was my first attempt. Though about the eraser thing, I totally see it, the issue is, when I'm doing graphics my eyes get a little funny after a while and I don't notice these things sometimes, but since, I have been taking more care with my eraser tool :x The robot guy, I actually just cut out his face and proped it forward, though I failed at making it 3D. The eye, needs editing indeed XD

Panda really went all out on the pen tool for sure, she ended it and added my favourite parts of the tag also. But I'm happy to know we've inspired you to get going again! Thanks, I've had a little motivation every now and then to pick up CS5.

In any case, a new tag, I've done /so/ many dark tags it's just getting old, so I decided to delve into colour and showcase a bit more of my skills. I'm liking this though, maybe a little crowded but i wouldn't change anything about it, so here is probably my favourite work to date. /So should have been more modest

Very awesome stuff man. Thought I'd drop by your shop to see your stuff. I can see improvement in a lot of it, a lot of progression and what you do with real-life images just looks professional in my honest opinion.

The only thing I would say to improve on is your flow and smoothness in some of your sigs to make it look real nice with the focal and all. Another thing is to maybe make your text a bit more subtle since some choices of font don't seem to work out the way you want.

http://i49.tinypic.com/1jrnzb.jpg

I think this is a great sig, except maybe the positioning of the render should switch with the font. It makes the left of the sig seem too boring and wasted space. If the font was a little more subtle (or maybe just changed the font type) it could be better methinks.

http://i50.tinypic.com/2ql604l.png

The clipping mask over the font is well done here and although the black around the text seems out of place, you make it work really well. I like this one :).

Can't wait to see more of your new stuff man.

~*~ANNOUNCEMENT OMG READ~*~

Now that I have your attention; before my update with new graphics, I'm offering one lucky member a new signature combined with CSS. Now, the catch is, you don't get to choose what it looks like but I will say it is going to be Zelda themed with Link on it. It's quite stunning due to the art being fantastic. In any case, it will be something like my current signature but made for someone else who I will be jealous of. So, how do you get this awesome signature/theme?

Well, I suppose the most enthusiastic member will come claim it! First 3 members to come along will get a new theme each, I will pick a username at random, they will get the Zelda banner/theme and the other two get an icon theme of their choice as runner ups.
Go go go

Right well 2 down, one to go. Once the last person claims I'll pick at random who gets it and the final two can ask for an icon theme.

Alright well I chose the username at random and Artic.uno is the one that I got. So congrats! Well your banner is below. Choose whether you want CSS or not (I can remove the box on the right), if you want anything changed and what you would like in the text box if you would like CSS. If you also want an avatar, I will make one for you, just say what size. The two other members get to request an icon theme from me personally. Just tell me what you'd like and I'll do my best to make a nice theme for you if you so wish.

Holy crap that tag is amazing...
The colours, lighting and atmosphere are awesome and my only critique would be that you could add some more burning around the edges/around the focal to bring out Link more.

Alternative
July 18th, 2010, 04:20 AM
I'd have to agree with moments. It's an amazing graphic, but Link doesn't seem to be out enough.
I'm also unsure on the placing of the box. It just seems out of place to me. Maybe if you moved it down it could maybe create more flow between the bottom-right corner to the end of the Navi glowing area, since Link is looking that way.

seeker
July 18th, 2010, 04:37 AM
Well, believe it or not, i did what you both suggested, but obviously not enough XD
As for the box placement, it needed to be up there, if I moved it down it would be on par with the focal and clash with the lower third of the banner and that's a no no. It's better to spread out your tag as much as possible and having all the action on the lower part of the tag would actually kill flow. But I'll upload a version with adjusments and without the text box in my next update. I have quite a bit to upload so I've been procrastinating.

Hmmm, I think this one was claimed by the member Drew, though I'm not entirely sure if they're planning on using it yet. If you'd like to contact them and ask, you two could arrange something. Either way, I can make an avatar. But just remember that she may have claimed it first. Just not sure how adamant she is on using it XD;

Also, now that I'm here without an update which is uncharacteristic of me, I'd like to thank you all for your kind comments.
@Nick - I'll be doing more stuff like it, better, I hope. I've just been swapping styles lately.

I'm working on a few different things atm, looking to work around smoe abstract works as well as with some new stuff I've never done before. So expect some of my usual and some of my not so usual in my next update.

You're going to have to be less condescending towards members' work jsyk. You're talking down to a lot of the members in this section and I'm not liking it. I don't mind that you don't like some work but please be specific and not so generic "These suck. Lighting, placement, smudging need work", stuff like that is what you've been posting. So please in future, be specific, be courteous and don't act like you're the be all and end all of the graphic artists here. You've been breaking rules and you're attitude has been a little edgy. I like a nice peaceful atmosphere in this section so I'd appreciate it if you'd put a little more thought into what you say to others because you have been offensive and hitting upon borderline spam. Any further questions can be taken to PM's and not in this thread.

Nice to see you like some of my work.

PS-Ur horizontal ones dont seem like tags, what are they.
No offense intented (I mean that)

Graphic art doesn't need to fall under any heading, the world of GFX doesn't revolve around icons, tags and LP's. But if you want to give them a name you call the verts, or vertical tags.

You obviously don't know a great deal about graphic design then. There's no rules as to what you compose something with, just because I didn't throw in more stocks doesn't mean anything. I've made stuff from scratch, does that mean it's invalid graphics? Art isn't something that has to be a paticular way to be good. Besides, there's far more to them than that.

One mini comment, the circle in the middle is assumed to be a sphere, like a planet or something, yet the face remains flat. It is creating an optical illusion of being flat and spherical at the same time and makes me eyes go weird... Either distort the face a bit by changing the 'Perspective' using the transform bit.
Also, not feeling the lighting or colours really, You've got the shadow under the main planet thing, yet the rest of the piece remains one shade nearly. You could use some serious burn tooling around the outsides of the piece. Pretty cool, trippy concept, I like it.

I'm going to take a stab at commenting/critiquing This (http://i55.tinypic.com/4uv3f8.png).

So I really want to like this, and I like a fair lot of it. The text is amazing in my opinion, it works very well and it's overall awesome. Going along with that is the effects near the text which also work very well. The lighting is well done and I enjoy the foreground. What really kills it in my eyes is the colour choice for the castle, the red accents (trim) just look very clashing and harsh with the off bluish white. Can't really explain it too well.

The fonts you chose to use on the last one feel extra default in the sense that they don't really catch the eye.
I'm not sure if this was on purpose or not, but the arrangement of the black and white bars feels extremely awkward against the text, and then is made even more out-of-place by the fact that the girl blurs around her shoulders while the text just stands out strong?

Not the best you could've done IMO- colors are dull, placement feels clunky and awkward, text is boring- and I feel you've left too much space between the edges of your text and their backdrops. The whole thing is very plain, and your slogan is cut too far apart. "It's not just a cut... it's a feeling" Might want to connect those pieces a little more by placing them one after another next time so that eye roving for the relation between those isn't necessary.

The "Petermark" logo seems oddly LQ against the rest of the poster as well- perhaps a re-tooling of that is in order, unless the logo is supposed to be like that, in which case I suggest you match the rest of the poster's quality to the logo.

Not sure if that helps or just shows a lot of my ignorance, but I was struck by how much this piece seems to deviate from your normal quality.

Wow dude, you can pull off gradients pretty well.

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss359/Abnegation/Sparktag.png

Very nice. Colors look dope here and fit very well with the mood. The background is very nice too. Nothing much to say except that the text could be better placement-wise and font-wise. Very nice gradient tag.

http://i40.tinypic.com/2rx9o91.png

Amazing. I think your best tag I've seen so far. You created a chaotic atmosphere with so much going on and you pulled it off. The render fits perfectly and is placed appropiately with the C4D, the lighting is incredible and everything just looks top-notch. Only thing bothering me is the C4D around her hips which doesn't look blended, and that the focal could be darker to fit the dark mood.

As for your LPs, I can't give proper crit. All I can say is, they are very cool and profound.

Since you're looking for icon requests, I'm gonna make one!
Can you make an Icon with a Swablu using Dragon Pulse, preferably on a spring field? If you can put text on, can you put the text "Almost a Dragon" on. I plan to use it as my avatar.

Anyway, I'm gonna have a go at CnCing this:http://i53.tinypic.com/qsqbmu.png
First of all, the colours look mysterious. That hit me, that got me liking this pic. Secondly, the lighting made the pic look even more mysterious. The castle stands out well. The rocks give it peaceful look. I can't see anything bad about it.
Sorry if my CnC is bad, I don't know much about CnC.

I'm saying no to your request on a few basis

1) There's no stock image
2) It's totally not my style, look at my previous update and see what kind of icons I do
3) I almost always only do IRL stock images for icons now, unless the stock is really high quality.

Thanks for the critique however.

Well I have been in a high graphics slump as of late, so my recent stuff has been very low quality for my liking. My icons remain up to scratch as I find them really easy to make well. However, they bore me to death. So I'll just update with whatever ones I have uploaded for now. I also have an LP which I made today, an attempt at a new style perhaps? I think I failed. With the typo from your current theme, did you edit the 'k' yourself, or is it a special font?
I'm guessing liquify filter or pentool. :P

Anyways, all those icons / profile pic made for Patchisou look a bit blurry and think every one of them could go with a tiny bit of sharpening, but otherwise the colours are great!

It's a special font, but it's the concept I was pointing to more so, the I being on it's side like it had been killed etc. Also being red has significance.

As for the icons, I tend to forget to sharpen sometimes, but I didn't notice it anyway, it's the colour. Just an error maybe, very minor and well, I'm not a big fan of sharpening high quality stocks anyway.

Okay wow, Gav. I don't stumble around here very often nor do I know much about the technicality in graphics, but it's plain to see that you've improved from whenever I last saw your stuff.

The lettursnnumburs thing (what's an LP?) is just phenomenal. You've created the mass very beautifully, but the important parts like the eyes stand out enough. I feel like I can see more of the characters in the busy version and I personally like it better.

Am I seeing things or is all of it only the Greek Alphabet?

As for the LP, hurry up and finish it, it has been ages... I think all you need is a definitive focal now, something that just ties it all together. Also some more details and specifics and stuff, also perhaps contrast up and try to work in some more dark purples. Otherwise, I've said it before, I love the style, and I think you pulled it off very well, especially considering it is a WIP, but there is still a bit to go before it becomes super good.

Glad you like my style Moom. And yeah, I'm just having a graphics block when it comes to LP's as of late. Or else I'm just too tired lately, which is more likely. At any rate, I have about 10 icons to show you. I tried to make some yummy colours on some of them, I'm not too proud of some of the ones I did in my low contrast style, I think my other style comes across better here. Anyway here they are.

http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff429/Iconsya/9-1.png http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff429/Iconsya/8-1.png http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff429/Iconsya/7-1.png http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff429/Iconsya/6-1.png http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff429/Iconsya/5-1.png

Time for me to give you some CnC. :D But since it's easier to critique work that isn't as appealing to people as others, I'll stick with a couple.

http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff429/Iconsya/1.png
I'm not sure how I feel about this icon. Your placement is outstanding and you've seemed to crop the image into an icon pretty well, but I think what baffles me about this is the colours. I think you've tried to bring out the colours, which is good for icons, but deliberately or not, I think they've been brought out too much and ruins the icon for me. I like the icon itself, but I think if you went with more of a monotone with this sort of thing, that it would be better for the eyes. What I'm trying to say is that you've brought out the neutrals and shades out much more than they should need to be brought out, and I don't like that.

http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff429/Iconsya/10-1.png
This one is nice, and I'm liking the colour you've used for the text, but again like the other one, I think you've brought out the whites too much in the icon. I'm speaking moreso for the background, that I think you've just slopped a white background at the end for the sake of giving it a background. I'm also not really liking the placement of the focal point either. I like what you've done with it, but I don't think this sort of icon works with using the negative space around it. I see you've tried to fill that void with text, but still, I don't think the negative sopace is helping the focal point of the icon one bit. Not one of your best works Gav.

Well, there's my CnC for the day.
Also now that you mention it, you should try and make a Muse batch, for me. :D

I'm not too sure on this tag to be honest. Sure the visual effects are amazing and it looks like you've used lots of lighting effects, and to me, it even looks a little similar to Aurora Borealis, but still something baffles be. I just feel as if you went and tackled this tag just as maybe a little fun thing, which just turned out to be really good. Also I feel as if you didn't really use a focal point. I don't exactly know where to start when I'm looking at it. Another thing I don't like so much is the text. With the visual display you've decided to use for the tag I think the text kind of loses out to it, expecially when it's standing out like you've made it. I mean sure if you decide to use something like overlay then it's okay for text to fade into the tag, but this way I just don't think it works. The visual effects you've used seem to be just too much for the text.

I'd also critique your photography, but I'm not so knowing with that stuff.

Well, thanks for the crit, but I'll just stop to point out that the focal point is the light source, bottom middle, flow extracts from that. Text was hard, but abstract things are usually pretty experimental tbh.

I do agree with alternative that the text stands out too much. But keeping the fact that its pretty hard to put text in a tag like that in mind, its okay. But yeah, apart from the text, the tag looks hot. I actually wanna know how you did that from scratch. A tut, maybe?

Well, I actually lost the .psd, since my computer crashed as I was making this, hence the text laziness. But at any rate I managed to take the text out without the PSD without messing it up (I've gotten too used to losing my work). But, I might make another tag like this and do a tut for it. Scratch.

Regarding the latest LP, the only thing that I can think of that could be tweaked or revamped or whatever is the colouring. The text is wonderfully coloured, but the guy is so desaturated / warm compared to the fairly cold colours of the effects and stuff. He just looks a bit of of place / not really blended in to the scheme of the piece as a whole.

Also, that main body of C4Ds, not the very top right, but just under that (main effects under the text), that sort of reddish purple colour you've got going on, in my opinion, is not too complimentary. I think bringing out the blacks more / more contrast / a darker purple (like the top right corner) might sit better with the rest of the piece.

On the note of him looking bit out of place, did you erase / feather the guy? The edge looks a bit blurry, particularly left side of his head / hoodie.

Just as a note regarding the overall colour of the whole thing, I seriously believe one or two gradient maps could benefit quite a lot. I know you are sort of against them because they aren't accurate or whatever, but it really will help blend all the colours together more effectively. If you can help blend the colours of the guy in with other colour adjustments, by all means do that if you prefer, but looking at this piece if it was mine, I'd whip out the gradient maps... Have a look into a black to white gradient on Multiply and lower opacity as needed, also a pale yellow to white on multiply.

Not a bad piece, just colouring really that is off for me.

February 22nd, 2011, 04:44 AM
Colouring is usually my strong point too! Lmao. But yeah, I have to agree that this piece isn't fantastic. Too much technique and too little time considering the basics imo. I didn't render him but I did sloppily bur around him to bring him out. I think this was one of those pieces where I was simply like "I JUST DON'T CARE ANY MORE AAAAA LOSING MY TOUCH" etc.

But, I may go back and make some refinements though, the stock was pretty dull as it was, I couldn't do much about it, so I made some poor choices there. I dunno moo, my latest stuff has sucked, I'm gonna have to bring it all back with a new piece. I should start drawing my concepts again.

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback dude. As always <3

I'm actually really unsure on whether I'm digging this or not. I know you've said that it's a CD cover so it's meant to be busy, but I don't think it's the problem with me. I think it looks great that you've made it busy! One thing I just don't really like is what you've done with the focal point in ordinance with the C4Ds and other effects. I think for my taste that you've chosen colours which represent brightness and that bring out something, but I don't think it works, with it being a semi-dark LP. Unless it's based on something which is meant to be like that (such as blue plasma from some Halo thing), then I don't really think it works much too good. Another thing which really bothers me about this is that you've gone for effects which look so rendered, that they look like they're animated in a sense, whereas you're using a semi-realistic stock, and I don't think it works too well. That, along with the bright colours I think really kills it. Not one of your best work I'm afraid.

Well I've gotten a mixed bag of reviews on this one. But I agree that it's not one of my better works, but it's definitely not one of my worst and I will always argue that as there's only a few minor things wrong, and I would disagree that the C4D's don't go with the image, people use C4D's with real life stocks all the time, they're not meant to look realistic. Not that I'm defending my own work, but the point is just a little under sighted. At any rate, I wanted to say to you, that you're just gonna have to watch out with how you critique, personally I appreciate it, but you need to offer suggestions or at least reduce how blunt you are when you give crit, as for many artists, it's hard to take crit, especially when it's not thrown across in a positive conversational language. Keep doing it, but just try and offer a few more suggestions and just avoid seeming blunt it all n_n

Anyway, thanks for the support. I'm maybe taking a small break from LP's, as no new concepts are coming to mind. So I'll probably work on making a few more advanced tags, just to keep the juices flowing.

Really nice new LP Gav! There are a few things that bother me, they are just minor and it may just be me, but they feel weird. Firstly, that pixelation filter or whatever where the two halves meet. I think if you get rid of that and make it nice and crisp and smooth it will go better with the rest of the piece. Unless you want to add more pixelation, I think that much, right there in the focal is a bit off putting...

Next, just to each side of the middle is a like 1px bright orange circle outline. Not sure if that really adds anything to the piece, and being the brightest colour in the area, it sort of steals attention. Make it darker or remove possibly.

Lastly, lighting. It is pretty good, but it is a bit flat and while the focal is obviously the middle, the lighting doesn't really enhance/support it. I think some burning / dodging, just on an applied image to make the middle pop more would do more good than you'd think.

Nice piece, love this type of abstracts, and you've almost nailed it!

Edit: Just looking at it a bit closer, it actually looks quite low quality in some areas (the edges of the black circle shapes, and the small like particles). Try and watch quality, especially on a piece like this!

But, depending on what the temperature of your light source was, I think you white balance is a bit off. I know you said it's unedited, but fixing the white balance is really easier if you have it as a RAW.

Aye, I wouldn't worry about trying to correctly sent your white balance at the time of shooting (on the camera). I can think of very few photographers who either bother to do that, or can successfully do it. It's one of the easiest things to fix in post, so most people just forget about it until they get to post-processing.

But since you said the lighting was pretty orangey to begin with, you're probably not too far off with the white balance.

To be honest, when I first saw the Jack Sparrow picture I thought it was simply a normal screencap which was slightly under quality. And then I read that it was a digital painting. Needless to say, my mind was blown at how talented you are at art in general. I couldn't even tell the difference between the picture and an actual photo at first, which is just astounding. Great work! One thing I would point out that it doesn't have much of a background, or it's too blurred for my liking. Other than that, it looks amazing. :DD

The lighthouse I see you've gone about and used minimalist colours, which is different, but the style works for you. I'm not exactly a digital artist, or know anything about the stuff, so I can't exactly give any criticisms on it, but it looks amazing.

Well, when I draw, I draw in realism. And I'm more of a traditional artist than I like to admit lol. Though in saying that, I've finally found my way in transferring it to digital art. Though I got a tablet, which is why I had the patience to do that. I started making it really realistic in some places, but changed my mind, I was just recreating an image which I didn't want to do, so I left the artistic style. Though it did take about 6 hours of brushing. The lighthouse is an earlier one though. As for the background, I was considering drawing mountains in the background, but I thought it might get too busy, but I think I will now.

Anyway, I will probably do more digital painting, and try do less scenes and more abstract art.

Long long break from actual graphics, since I was playing with a tablet for a while. And of course photography. Anyway, this is a new style I wanted to try out, bear in mind I've been out of graphics for a few months.

One thing I feel this piece has that stands out to me the most is the fact you've tried to split it up into two seperate sections, with the bottom more effect heavy than the top. It's a really nice piece you've done. You can really tell it looks space-y if you know what I mean. Like, the effects you've used, especially in the top half are all looking like they've got some sort of space texture to it, which is nice. One thing that really bothers me about this is the text indefinitely. There's just something about it which I really don't like, maybe the bold first letter and the super italicalized (I'm assuming you used two) everything else, and it just irks me for some reason. Also the box doesn't go right to the edge, which I don't know if that was intentional or not, but at first it looks a little weird (I'm growing on it). But ask far as your latest works go, it's probably one of your best. Vivid colours stand out, really nice composition, using the sane render again and again for added depth, it's just putting me in awe.

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/169/8/d/twenty2_by_gavzxhayley-d3j7v7z.png
This is another really nice one, even if you're kind of using moments. gloomy style, which is always nice. One think I noticed first is that the gloomyness you've used actually works with the expression the focal is using. There are nice colours there and lots of wispy smoke effects, which I didn't think I'd see from you. You've made exceptional work of shadowing everything, so you know. :) Text is always a stunner from you Gav, but I feel the placement is weird to me. It seems too central if you know what I mean. From what I've learnt, text also needs to follow a rule of thirds thing, even if it is a large piece. Unless it's like your Two Steps From Hell piece, the text shouldn't really be centralized. But yeah, apart from all that, which is only really personal nitpicking, it's a nice piece you've done here.

Thanks for the cirt Alt. I'll agree on the text for the first, it urked me too. But I dunno if I'll change it. As for the second piece of crit, I want to make it clear that I didn't attempt to go with moments' style...at all. I was simply saying that he'd like it, since he seems to like this part of my style. This is a style I made back in September of last year on some of my icons -

Sadly this was taken with a Google Nexus S, phone, so I don't have a very high res version. But I was fishing, and I seen the sky expelling the most beautiful colours, so I stuck around for an hour and caught this one.

I'm not a master of photography, so I'm gonna rate the tags. :P I know you hate tags, but the comments should be applicable for LPs and stuff as well.

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/182/f/9/music_industry_by_gavzxhayley-d3knf92.png

First of all, and it is looking to be a bit like a trend for you, whether because you are experimenting more with smudging recently or not, you are soft erasing all around the stock and you've got floating head syndrome in most of your later pieces where applicable. I feel like this tag just doesn't really have that much going for it, like, the stock placement I feel could be a little down and to the right. It is also very flat. You've got the background, and then you've blended the stock in by smudging/erasing all the edges so it doesn't actually technically sit above the background, and then there are no effects over Gaga, so it literally is as flat as could be.

Another thing, the lighter smudging which sort of surrounds Gaga, is very cloudy and thick, and you can't see through it at all, and it is one one shade, so it doesn't provide much eye candy, just sort of covers up the more interesting smudging / star stocks underneath it. Also that pixellated effect, not really sure what you were going for, but because it is restricted purely to the top of the tag, and it isn't situated in specific points of interest in little bursts, it just feels like it is there just because, and if you really wanted to keep it, I'd try and make it more dynamic and keep it only in smaller patches in spots of interest, more around Gaga and under the text.

Lastly, lighting is seemingly non existent which could actually help make it a little less flat. Darkening that bottom right the most, and some vignette going on would help make it pop a lot more, then dodging a tiny bit to really bring out the face.

Overall, quite a weak piece, not really feeling what you've got going on, and while I know you don't really like doing tags, you could definitely try and incorporate more elements / concepts and techniques from your LPs which are generally quite good and use them for your tags. Tags don't have to be smudge/C4D, they can be just small LPs if you want, which I think would help you a bit.

Battle with moments. I think people didn't like how I brought out the blacks, but I personally liked the addition.
http://i54.tinypic.com/34skkrn.png

I actually liked the bringing out of blacks on her face, but it was that left side that I felt didn't work. Because you've got such a dark area, with so little happening over it, it literally is empty space, and just feels a little bit too empty.

This tag is quite good, so not as many comments as the last, however again you've got a bit of floating head syndrome from erasing / smudging the stock. If you left the right shoulder in tact and added smudge layers over the top, it would've felt a bit stronger and more cemented down. But yeah, the smudging is very good in this piece, good use of different hues and tones.

One thing that really does lack in this tag is a full commitment to the lighting you started to add. Whether you meant for it or not, you have a fairly harsh white/yellow light source in the top right corner, however you haven't added any lighting to the right side of the face. Some dodging, white / yellow soft brushing on colour dodge / linear dodge on that right side of her face would've just look a little bit more polished, and definitely help blend a little bit more, which could've saved you erasing her hair on that side.

Text is good, could possibly be moved down a few pixels cause it is feeling a tad close to the focal point, but otherwise very good.

Yeah, I've said it before, and you've said it, that you hate tags, but really when making a tag, it should be exactly how you do a LP, just on a smaller canvas. So even if you don't like the small canvas, which is fair enough, you should still use similar polish and tricks if you've got them.

Sorry for being doom and gloom, hope it wasn't too harsh!

Mhmm, I totally appreciate the comment moom. I only got to reading it now. Been super busy. But yeah, as you know, tags are not my thing. I was practicing smudging alright, but I can't really always apply my LP methods to tags since there's usually more than just one stock image I'm blending when I'm making them. But I'll try. Again though, big thanks.

Aaaand, it's been over a month since I've done graphics, so here's something I eased back into it with this one. I do like it, I just know I need to start doing work again. Sort of a large tag. Not feeling the text, but any recommendations?

Not the actual using more than one stock, but how you actually blend them. Whether you blend one or 10 stocks into a background or each other should be fairly consistent.

As for this, 'salright. Agreed on the text, if you want text, go for plain white, no box behind it and play with fonts, I can't really tell what will look good. But also move it down a fraction so it sits between her shoulder, and her elbow (rolled up sleeve creates a little pocket for it to slot in to) because right now, it is a little too close to her face, and it just feels clunky, doesn't really sit nicely in current position.

As for the effects and stuff, 'tis all very good, although that texture of white lines going horizontally, not feeling that at all. Could either get rid of it completely (what I would do), or you can try and erase parts so it isn't so uniformed and dense clusters of them. I'm not sure if this was part of that texture as well, but in the dark space in between the bubbles, it looks quite lq, particularly in that space to her left. Can either do some burning to increase the contrast and just buff it out, or Filter>Noise>Reduce Noise and erase everywhere except the lq bits which should clean it up a little bit.

Finally, around nearly all of Hayley, you've got a solid pixel of white / orange which is ridiculously visible given the dark clothes she's wearing. Not sure if this was just bit of a slack render job or you were going for that effect or what, but it looks a bit distracting and messy. And finally, I'm thinking the canvas is a tad too big in the space over her head. So you could either crop it a bit shorter in height, or move her up a bit depending on how much stock is left. Also she's feeling a little too centred, she could be moved the tiniest fraction to the left so she again, slots into a nicer spot. Think of rule of thirds, she is kind of in the middle, or not quite in the hotspots.

But yeah, mighty comeback to graphics, I had a feeling you'd perform better after such a break. ;)

Not feeling this new piece to be honest, it's not that it isn't good, technically, it is quite good, but it is just boring I'm afraid... Basically it just feels incomplete, or just way too generic. Adding a stock to a space scene is nothing original, but if you add your own spin to it, it can be really effective, however I don't feel like you've added enough pazazz to it, not enough to make it pop.
Also colour wise, not feeling the gloom, I feel because you haven't got that pop I was talking about, you could've made it pop using the colours, and perhaps avoiding that gloomy style you love. Also, those two planets with the magenta and mustard coloured nebula look really out of place cause of the colours. That mustard ain't working I don't think...

Yeah, not your best concept wise, executed quite well, just doesn't feel like you've put the same thought / time into this working in more details and stuff. Also I apologise that comment was so unstructured and stuff, tired / stressed...

Gotta agree with you there moom, focused too much on technique and no so much on concept. Which is something I'm working on. Currently, I'm working in high resolution for photomanips (6000px each way usually), but my graphics card is slow on my desktop, so is the progress. Those will be done soon. Here's a digi-painting I did today. Used a render as stock/reference.

This is one of the pieces I am really confused with, especially regarding your concepts, your use of your talent and your understanding of the mediums. Just a first point, isn't digi-painting exactly the same as normal painting but digitally, so using brushes and a tablet to create, what looks like a painting. I have never seen a single 'digi-paint' where the liquify tool was used, at least this obviously...

Leads me to the next point, why did you liquify everything so much!? Honestly, I feel the liquify destroys this whole piece. I don't see the point in it and you've distorted the actual focal itself quite significantly... Not sure if that was what you were going for, but I personally don't understand why, and don't think it looks to good. :(

Finally, but perhaps most importantly, your use of talent man. When I first saw your paintings / drawings, I honestly thought you were just chucking a filter or two over the top so it doesn't look like a photo anymore and looks a little more sketchy and taking the credit for it, I know you are at art college, and working in a graphics place and a respectable artist, so that quickly left my mind. BUT! With skills to draw so accurately, even if using a reference, why don't you work with that, and make really stunning digi paintings. Your reproduction of the Assassins Creed render is ridiculously good, at first I didn't realise it was a digi paint, however, if you have then (like a normal painter) done a sort of realistic background, or at least one that puts the character in context, like a setting from a game, or another place and painted that as well, you would have a stunning piece of art. Yes it would've taken like 4 times as long overall, but honestly, I would've picked that as the logical progression in a digi-paint, and would've really harnessed your painting / drawing abilities and really shown it off. This piece almost hides it.

Sorry that was sort of one way, I don't have any experience in painting, so I can't tell you where to improve technically, but hope that was ok and not too blunt man.

Blue Purple.png
Lovely WIP Gav! :D
This isn't going to be a long comment, more just a list of things that I feel could be tweaked before the final product is assumed.

First of all, and the one that jumped to me initially are the, what I assume are brushes rather than pentool, just in the bottom-right corner, the ones that come in front of her. Looking at the rest of the piece, you've got these nice smooth pentooled shapes and lines and stuff, and at least the bird brushes have smooth / crisp edges, but these ones in the bottom right have like a painted feel about them. They aren't bad, just don't really fit with the rest of the piece, in terms of the aesthetic. If you wanted go all all brushed edges, that'd work too, just one or other I'm thinking...

And now the things that are just like technical tweaks, and don't really have any necessary comments to them.
- Those horizontal lines one the left, just under the palette squares are out by a few pixels in both thickness of line, and space between.
- That green circle behind her shoulder either needs to be more prominent for the green to be like an effect, an anomaly, otherwise if you want it hidden, it might feel more solid keeping to the blue/pink.
- The birds have a black duplicate behind them I think to help them stand out / create a sort of shadow, but if you made like actual shadows with gaussian blur on that duplicate, it might look nice!
- There is a blemish in the texture to the right of her head, between the blue/pink circles which could be taken out with clone tool.
- Really thin blue lines in the very bottom right feel a little weak, could either be made a lot thicker, at least like the other lines in the piece, or just removed.

But yeah, really nice piece so far, some of those last things I probably didn't need to say as it's a WIP, but just in case you might've missed any / wanted a new perspective.

Do some research dude haha. I didn't use the liquify tool. You see, this piece much like that filter are based on works by Salvador Dali. A famous painter who worked like this a lot and is one of my biggest influences. I actually drew this first, once I get on my desktop I'll upload it and show you. But I can see where you're coming from. My first two paintings weren't that impressive because one was. A reproduction of a screencap. It's a total scrap, just for practice. The other lacked detail. Which is my biggest problem with painting and I'm working on it. I'm disappointed that it came across that I just used a filter on the latest one. I worked a lot with how I wanted it to blend and on colour and detail. It's meant to be really distorted and abstract. If I had the skill in making original characters I would have. But I enjoyed recreating Ezio. I felt my approach was quite good, in terms of personal artistic development. Perhaps my concept lacks substance, but this is a style I want to go for. I'll work on making it so that it seems more original. But I do feel that your inexperience in the area leads to some of your criticism not applying deeper. In saying that, I know what I need to worn on thanks to your comment. But I'm trying to branch out, work more towards illustration, and I'll be working with photomanipulations more soon too.

Anyway, in relation to the work in progress. I really dislike the overall quality, I think that's because of the illustrator swirls which contrast with the pentooling. So I'll work on that. And I'll apply your other suggestions too.

Guess who owes you a gallery comment :) I'll drop one in when I get on my desktop. Just don't be afraid to think apart from what you're used to seeing. And thanks for the comments.

Moo might've said it is kinda easy to create pieces which involve the focal to be situated in space and stuff, but what you've done here is still much better than anything I could've come up with. The only things that bugs me are the planets hovering near her hands. Those seem out of place.

I am very familiar with Dali, did a massive project on him in school and is definitely my favourite traditional artist. I think the point that I was trying to make, but perhaps didn't get out properly is that it doesn't feel like there is any obvious concept here from a removed perspective. Dali's actual subject content was made liquified which had some sort of interpretative meaning behind it, I can't see any sort of underlying messages within making Ezio, and a fairly flat, coloured background liquified. I think what could've worked better in keeping with this style is to have made Ezio more abstract and distorted. The fact that his face and everything is in tact, but only the edges of him are liquified feels a little forced. Also, now taking into consideration your aim, I can definitely appreciate it more and see what you were going for, but the fact that it isn't really fitting to normal codes, the liquify feels forced as well. If you look at Dali's 'The Persistence of Memory' (melting clocks), you see that they still fit into realistic physics, they turn into liquid, and thus fall down under gravity. Your liquifying doesn't seem to fit a code, and feels a little too random and not really structured.

As I said, now that you've mentioned that you were going for abstract, I can definitely appreciate this piece more, but it doesn't have the same obvious and depth that Dali included. And of course he was ridiculously talented, but I feel that if you were trying to reflect elements of his style, this possibly wasn't the clearest / easiest subject and background to work that in to.

Well, I guess, as I'm going to say to moom also, is that people see art so differently it's ridiculous. So you might see something in the piece you enjoy that others don't haha. But anyway I'm glad that you like the abyss piece. As for the crit, I'm not happy with the overall concept, but I see what you mean, I just needed to blend it all a bit more, and that's how I was trying to achieve it. But I'll be sure to think about placement in future.

As for the second, I've got some mixed feedback on it. I'm actually quite happy with it, but I guess the concept isn't refined as it could be. In all honesty. And I can see that coming across in some of the replies I've gotten recently. I think my main issue lies in the background. Which I very well may recreate. But thanks for the comments dude, I'm currently working on critting your works that I've not done spoken about already.

It was kind of meant to wave around him, like he was a being with power? I guess. And I admit my concept wasn't great, so I might take out Ezio and do it again with a new background. So I think I'll work on that again.

But if you're looking to get started in digital painting, or want to look into it a bit more, this is a good example; http://donatelladrago.deviantart.com/art/Ariel-Voice-254161652 and reason being is that they take a lot of stocks and adapt them to get their concept across. See how it's not that much different from photomanipulation? When digital painting, things don't have to be 100% solid scratch brushing. But they use a lot of references for poses and such. But the difference between theirs and mine is, that they have a good concept and I didn't haha. Bit anyway, I need to work on my concepts a bit more. I have some in mind but I want to get some stocks organized and get back into graphics before putting my more thought about concepts into practice. So, look forward to those.

I think you'd need to blend it in more with the current scene so it looks more realistic in a sense, since you're trying for a photomanip. Another thing that sticks out is that it seems like the stuff you're working with on this is one of those very fine lines between being realistic, such as a dragon in a live action movie, and more of a very detailed animation, and I don't like it personally. It works, but I don't like it. Maybe you could try leaning more one way or the other for this?

But it's an amazing piece. I'm thinking some of the colours, especially in the clouds could be more dull, or desaturated, but it's nice.

I actually have no idea what you mean by the second part of the critique. I don't think it looks too realistic, it was more of the direction of gaming graphics than anything. I didn't intend it to look realistic, as photo-manipulations allow you to go wild. But I appreciate the comments!

Anyway, here's something I did during my lunch break for college. It's massive, so click for the full resolution.

Well, let's start by saying I find this work to be really nice. The idea is pretty unique and it draws my attention, which is probably the main goal of this design. I really like the contrast between the dark, green colours of the grenade and the light, vivid colours of everything surrounding the grenade.

The only thing I don't really like is the text "1970's".
In my opinion, the text is not that easy to read, probably due to the chosen pattern. I'd give the text some outlines, whether it be a stroke, a glow or shadows, but I tend to use outlines for the texts I type.

I do concur with Blake on the point that the dragon does not fit in with the actual scenery, and I do believe the cause of that could be the light sourcing on the dragon, it's all wrong. If you pay close attention to the direction of the light that hits the castle and compare that to the fact that the light sourcing on the dragon approaches from the opposite direction, then you'll see why both the entity and the scenery contrast with each other rather than slot in.

What you could have done was add shadowing to the dragon to make sure it complies with the light source, that and tweak the reflection on the water a little more to make it seem more convincing, because right now I can see that the actual reflection you tried to make is very iffy in perspective—I don't believe that much of its physique should have been shown on the water.

Picture its 3D image in your mind, and try to picture yourself positioned under it. You'll see that the only thing that you really needed to make note of on the water was a shadow cast by the angle of which you see beneath it, such as its legs and the way its tail would cascade down towards you. I understand that this isn't a drawing and trying to emphasise these things with a single clipping can be terribly difficult, so it would have been a good alternative to just cast a shadow below the area of water that it covers.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1215457/rock.png

I also noticed a bit of the white in the image coming through on the rock. Not quite sure if this was intentional or not, but it appears to be more of a mistake that should be erased.

I can understand that photo-manipulations don't necessarily need to stay traditional in the sense that everything should fit like a painting, surrealism does enhance an image and make it interesting. However, the fact that everything in an art piece needs to fit in together somehow is still just as relevant in surrealism, and to do that while enchanting your audience with the impression that it's out of the norm is clearly a sign that you're paying very careful attention to whatever piece of art you're trying to assemble.

Sorry to say that I don't particularly share Blake's enthusiasm about the direction of your work. I think it's fascinating that you're willing to experiment with more realistic elements of an image and there is nothing wrong with trying different things, even if they don't appeal to all audiences. It's not always about what the image itself contains, it's also about how the graphic artist sells it that can affect the reception given on it by their audience.

Just to go back to the dragon piece on everyone saying realistic, I feel the same way, but realistic is not the word. It doesn't have to be realistic, but what is coming across is that the dragon is too obviously not part of the original image. It sticks out and is obvious you have added it in there. So blending is what the piece needs overall.
With the reflection as well, Signomi's idea for the shadow is a good one, but either way, it needs to be way smaller. The dragon is quite a bit above the water, so physics says it wouldn't be that big cause of perception or whatever, but yeah.

Also, I feel the background mountains are like almost vector looking. Not sure if intentional, or product of heaps of adjustments and blurring and stuff, but I don't think it feels as good with the 'photo' like qualities of the rest of the piece.

And I think the colours could be more cold, they are sort of too pink everywhere, either bring out the warmth heaps and get more reds and blacks in there, or go cold. You are sort of stuck in the awkward middle of cold with some beefy pinks.

As for the new piece, the ridiculously large resolution one, it looks really good in the small view. But when you go full size, that's when you see the little things. So part of me wonders if you were working at it, alternating between full size and a more general size, or just whatever fit your screen. Things like white pixels around the flowers where they have been rendered a little sloppily, the giraffe mane looking a little clunky (although I know hair is a pain in the butt, but if you are going to make the resolution so large, it becomes really obvious and if you aren't going to add extra effort to really make it perfect, then don't go with the massive resolution.)

But the main one that is both distracting, a silly mistake which just seems to be missed because you didn't work with it in full size, is this white splatter / pixel line over the Toucan. You can only see it if you go full size, but it is actually quite distracting, and just looks really sloppy.

I'm also not a fan of the text. The clipping mask / overlay is a little cheap looking, doesn't feel to nice and crisp and is a little difficult to read, just because it really blends in with the hectic colours and patterns behind it. I'd go just a solid colour, but yeah, needs some tweaking.

Lastly, the background being just solid grey I think is a little bland. It just feels too empty in comparison to the focus in the middle. Yes you want to draw attention to the actual content, but a quiet pattern or texture overlay would look nice, just to make it a little more homey and less sort of antiseptic almost. It is like too smooth, too pristine.

But yeah, quite good, definitely one of your best pieces, but just be wary of working in the big resolutions. Everything is like 10x more obvious. :P

Hmm, the text does have a stroke, I could have went with something darker but I felt it would have been to out of place. But thanks, I'll take that into account. And thanks for the kind comments.

Yeeeah, that piece has a lot of errors, in lighting mostly. I said earlier it was a WIP, and now I don't feel like finishing it haha. However, if I do, I'll take your comments to photoshop and apply them. Thanks Sig!

Ah, okay, I knew the dragon needed work, though I thought I got away with the background. I might just edit them with some brushing and draw in some details. And thanks for recommendation on the reflection.

As for the large resolution, I learned at work that it doesn't matter how choppy things look, because you're never going to scale it that way, not even in printing. It would be scaled down then blown up, so you wouldn't notice those details, I was just too lazy to scale it down haha. And I noticed that splatter later, I forgot to clean it. Since I was on a lunch break I didn't have too much time, though I'll fix it in revision. I'll consider something else for the text, but plain colour is mundane here, so I'll try do something with more clarity. And the background, hmm, I guess I didn't think about that, I was pretty happy to leave it plain, but now that you say it I might make a pattern.

Don't worry too much about the size, it was intended to be scaled down. I just work like this now. You wouldn't believe how sloppy professional graphics artists are when it comes to high res, only because they can be. And I've taken a page out of their book.

Thanks for the comments guys, I should have some new pieces up this week, got some concepts in mind.

That was pretty cool, too. My only comments on this piece is the "ICE CREAM" text and the pink colored bus (?) behind the girl. I mean, you could leave it, but I probably would have changed the pink to the light, orange color you used in your text. I'm sorry for no suggestions on the font use, I just think the font was weird looking with the cute, curly text over it.

I looking over this because the works I usually like from you have the red/red-orange and blue coloring, and the purple colors are a nice change. ^..^

Actually quite like the collage / scrap book style used in this with the stocks and colours used. However, I am not feeling the text at all (except for the bit in the very top left because it doesn't stand out too much and the font compliments the piece.) I feel like the text is too forced because of the font choices, they are default and cheap feeling, being fonts I can recognise as ones that rarely get used because they are somewhat too novelty, not simple, but not quite decorative enough.

Anyways, I'd like to see the piece finished, you've got a lot to like included within it (including a butt load of rendering which would've proven time consuming and a lot more work than is given credit for.)

As for that piece you got professionally done in the public stand, not too much to say. Given it was accepted and printed to be used in a public display, one would assume it is of a high standard, and it is. Congrats on the achievement though, well deserved. ;)

Bearing in mind that this piece was made for ToTF under the theme 'Colour', I have to give you props for the good colour palette, and the good use of vibrant colours. However, for me, there are some things that really irk me about the piece. The first one, and definitely the clincher, the pixellated / low quality shapes down the bottom of the canvas. I don't know if you started with the shapes clean like the others and then decided to change, or whether it happened accidentally and you decided to keep it, but I really feel it detracts from the overall aesthetic of really clean, almost vector-like qualities. It doesn't draw attention to itself, but it definitely looks out of place.

The other things are just minor, likely subjective things, but things I feel I should mention regardless. The invert effect over the eye I am not at all feeling. Perhaps if the positioning of the piece was different, but that is pretty much the hot spot for the tag, and personally, I don't feel as if it fits in as well as it could.
The other thing is just the little bit of text in the bottom left corner which I don't know why is there. Whether part of the stock or added by yourself, it feels unnecessary and a little random.

Batmansmall.png
I don't have quite as much depth to say on this piece because it is a lot stronger overall, and many of the comments, again, may be personal opinion, so take it if you will, otherwise pay no attention to them.

I feel this stock really lends itself to dark, cold colours and can imagine the piece being more solid if the reds were replaced with blue hues. Maybe an alternate version perhaps, but I wouldn't have picked red were I working with the stock / effects you used.
Next, I think the text is a little too close to his chin. The typo is good, but positioning I believe can definitely afford to be moved down a little bit, and just give the stock room.
Lastly, I'd have liked to see some more depth, particularly in the foreground effects. And that empty patch just above + to the right of the text actually slightly draws attention for being so empty, just chuck some nebula effects or more C4Ds in there to fill it up a little bit.

But yeah, nice works, just things that irked me. Again, feel free to ignore. <3

Very nice concept with this one Gav, just not feeling the execution so much. Particularly the quality of most of the piece. Besides the stocks you've listed, everything else is quite low quality: pixellated and whatnot. Either the cloud stocks you used were crappy quality, or they got messed up in the process but it honestly detracts from the piece. It just makes the whole thing feel unpolished.

Next up, there are some clouds that are slightly blue. I don't really understand why you've chosen to add this in. It doesn't look terrible or anything, but if you are going to have colour, why make the rest black and white? It doesn't work fantastically as a colour splash, because it is so unsaturated. I can see some potential in playing with the tones of different clouds, specifically the ones you made blue, but do so using levels, or dodge/burn instead of the blue tint.

A few smaller things which just feel cheaply done. That floating skeleton to the right just looks weird there by itself, and the edges aren't sharp and just gets lost. Same with the gravestones regarding soft edges, I can understand the clouds/smoke making it less crisp, but it looks soft erased, particularly the left side of the right gravestone. The two skeletons either side of the reaper as duplicates feels cheap as well. Not so much because they are duplicated, but because you haven't noticeably edited the lighting / shading on them. You do have light coming from both sides, but a few adjustments would've been nice. Lastly, the clouds/smoke on the immediate top edge of the big floating skull are really sharp and don't really look like clouds/smoke. Looks like you magic wand selected and deleted without soft brushing or anything like that. Also a fleck on the top edge, towards the right side with the same problem.

Lastly, and maybe equally as clinching as the quality issues are the tones / contrast and the depth, or lack thereof. The big skull at the top has good contrast and nice dark tones, but the rest of the piece is too grey for me. Because you lack this contrast (I'm not even talking a lot, you just need to bring it up a smidgen) you lost a lot of depth and the piece feels flat. You could alternatively get a big (200px~) soft brush with the burn tool and burn some of the darker areas, also the closest clouds to us on either side of the canvas, and then use the dodge tool as well to bring out the highlights more. Also, using the blur tool a tiny bit on some of the foreground / background clouds wouldn't hurt either.

Overall, it's a really good concept, really good choice and use of the stocks from shutter stock. Though, it makes me question your use of all the other stocks / effects not listed and where you got them, why they lack the same quality, stuff like that. Other than that, the rest can very easily be fixed in a couple of layers and doesn't need too much deleting and rejigging.

Firstly, nearly everything about this piece is a step up from what you've been producing in the past. I haven't seen much art from you (not pixel/Phoenix Rising) recently, so I assume you haven't been doing a whole lot, but this is definitely an improvement.

Only thing that bugs me about this tag are the vertical crops either side of the focal. I appreciate them and see what you were going for, but for me personally, I feel it interrupts the flow a little bit. If you incorporated some more crops into effects, made it more geometric and angular, it would definitely work really well, but for me, feels a little awkward.

Also, that red 'U' shaped thing to the left of focal, tone it down or remove. <3
But yeah, use of textures is really good, colours are good, composition is good. The only other thing I can think of is possibly a few more shadows in the background and highlights on focal to make it pop more, but honestly, it is pretty damn good as it is.

As for the pixel art, you know I'm not a pixel artist, and using the very limited knowledge I have, I can recognise this as technically very good, and aesthetically very good. The only thing I could mention is that as it was used as a graphics piece, (ToTW) that adding more graphic elements to enhance your pixel art could be interesting. A sort of cross media type thing. Adding some like wind blowing, or some texturing or something like that as post in Photoshop would be pretty cool. But again, just nitpicking really.

So yeah, good job on it all! ;D

I know this is amazing, but I'm working on some digi-painting. This is subject to change, so let me know what I can do. I'll give you two versions.

Pixel art is already highly respected in the tagging world, there just aren't many artists who do it, and do it well. It's a pretty niche field within the tagging community, but there are a couple of guys who have some pretty 'famous' pixel tags.

As for the painting, I'm getting stuck between the vibe of a vector and the vibe of a digi paint. You've got minimal details in shading, particularly the face which is very vector like, but then quite soft, sketchy lines. I think you need to beef up the lines a bit more and work in some more details, or at least more shading. I get what you're going for, but it just feels a little awkward at the moment.
Inverse bokeh is awkward too. I like it, but I don't. It's not adding depth as bokeh is mostly used for, and it feels a little isolated only being in that one area. I think if you get a more even spread, increase how much you've got, it would work well as some foreground effects sort of.

And the second version is better, if only for the darker lines around her eyes, which as mentioned, give it more pop due to the stronger lines which just help anchor it a bit more.

I'm a little drunk atm, so I don't even know. A typo I guess.

Just got into Heretic on Fringe. They've gotten stricter and kicked some people off the team, so I went ahead and posted an app. I was going to go with Trans. But yeah, they're a bit overly serious.

Here's a new painting.

The Scizor set is so cool! Can I use one of them as my avatar?

Yeah sure, go ahead. I have some new stuff to show, but I'm gonna wait till I finish up some battles.

And a random sketch of Daenerys and her dragon from Game of Thrones which I'm not sure I'll do anything with.

This is from a 3 way battle with two art tutors on a big graphics forum, I won by one vote I think. Bit older than the above stuff. Not too great.

And for anyone interested I threw together a bit of a portfolio site. http://gavintage.com/

I really need to do something about this activity too, jeez.

Those distorted/flipped and stacked text is becoming too much of a thing. :3
Anyways, the piece is too empty, both from a lack of effects around the edges, and nearly all of the left side of the canvas, and also because you have a bit too much contrast. At the very least, you need some textures, even if they're faint just to fill it out a bit more.

The stock has decent blending, but those bokeh over the stock in the bottom right feel way too forced, and the lack of variance in colour between all the bokeh in the piece feels cheap. Remove those bottom right bokeh and replace with some other effects to help with blending.

Pretty sure I already gave you CnC on the other tag, but the only thing I'd recommend on that first painting is to get more details and highlight, especially in the eyes. Feels a bit flat, simple and boring to be honest. A few details and highlight will really make it pop and be a lot more appealing.

New painting. Hopefully it's liked more than the last. Click for larger size.

Abne, that new piece is gorgeous, though I think there should be more work done to the hair, as well as the dynamics. That's my only gripe, but this looks really good. :)
