Due to the multiple FMA threads, it's obvious FMA needs it's own stickied discussion thread.
So... Talk any & everything FMA here. Enjoy. :)
Btw, FMA airs tonight on Adult Swim! YAY!

Ed's voice... O_O
I must confess...I like the original japanese dub better...oh well
Ready Steady Go will be the intro...>.>
Good thing they didn't have the into this time. Originally, they put Melissa as an ending in the first episode...XD
Ed's always himself, alright... ^__^ (IMO, I couldn't compare him to another anime character since he's quite unique)
Who's your favorite character, everyone?
Mine:
Clickity if you dare -> Anime: Hughes, Envy, Wrath, Armstrong, Roy, Havoc, Hawkeye, Izumi, Winry
Manga: Ed, Hughes, Envy, Greed, Roy, (all of Roys subordinates [Hawkeye, Havoc, Fury, Breda, Falman), Ling, Barry the Chopper, Armstrong, Izumi, Sig, "Father", Winry

I'm obsessed with FMA...BUT FUNI COMPLETELY BUTCHERED THE OPENING AND MOST OF THE SCRIPT!
Opening/Ending: What the heck is the big deal of dismantling Melissa and randomizing the clips with Ready Steady Go? Melissa was such a great opening and Ready Steady Go was my favorite opening... ><
Script: I don't know what Funimation did but they made Al sound like a wuss. "Not so fast, mister"? What happened to "Ahh! I lost my head again!" ...meh...oh well
Voice acting: Al's voice was too...how should I say this...too...soft. It wasn't like in the original version. Ed's voice doesn't seem to fit him...or is it just because I got used to a deep voice...XD
Logo: .. >< I liked the Japanese logo better...
Meh...ignore me...at least it's being featured in America...what else can I say... XD
LONG LIVE FMA!!!

You people are going nuts. Remember, Adult Swim SHORTENS the endings for any anime that air the full openings. Since Melissa, UNDO and Rewrite aren't being played for the [adult swim] openings, they had to use Ready Steady Go. By the way, in case you didn't know (and I hate how everyone keeps forgetting this..), Melissa was played as the ENDING of the first episode. Then it became the opening. Scar was ALWAYS in the opening to Melissa considering we find out about him during the time the opening is still being shown. o_O He appears through the first three opening.
Logo doesn't matter. It looks roughly the same, even though they could have done a better job to make it look like the original (considering fansubbers managed to pull the same off with their own versions). But eh, doesn't matter.
This is the first episode. Don't base your judgement on voices on JUST the first episode. Give them time to actually get into their characters. Besides, give Al's VA a chance. He's only a kid starting out in the VAing business. Not everyone starts out professionally.
The script I really don't mind at all. Al's always been somewhat of a 'wuss' in terms of him not being as direct as Ed is. I've posted on Serebii.net's forum a list of changes from the first episode, so I suppose I'll do the same here (and I'll do the same as each episode passes by):
-The explanation of Alchemy in the begining is pretty much the same in both languages. Only difference is that Ed's explaining it in the English version when it was Al who explained it in the Japanese version.
-Small thing, the avatar refered to as Leto is pronounced Leeto in the English version for some reason. And the last man to speak after Al fixes the radio had something quite different to say. Originally he mentioned that there weren't any alchemists in their area, yet in English he offers to give Ed and Al a job if they're looking for work.
-The last man to speak after everyone assumes Al is the Fullmetal Alchemist originally asked if he was really that famous. For some reason, they had him ask if Al would be willing to go to his daughter's birthday party. o_O;
-Sadly, Ed's exaggeration wasn't used in the English version. He wasn't bragging about "CAN A SHORTY DO THIS?!" Original dialouge was this: "Who did you say was small like a grain of rice and doesn't show up in your eyes?!" To which the men he was hurling around were protesting that they didn't say that exactly.
-Ed's talk with Rose was abit different. Originally he explained that Alchemists are basically scientists and had no need for believing in a false thing such as God. He then mentions how it's ironic how Alchemists are the closest things to God. Rose then asked if he was trying to commit blasphemy and mentioned that he was no God and that humans are not things. They avoided the heavy God and blasphemy talk and even had Ed suggest to Rose to pick up an Alchemy book. Not the best thing to have him say considering he knows well enough that human transmutation is the biggest taboo of Alchemy and that she'd attempt trying it even when he then warns her about it later.
-Ed seemed more forceful about getting the Stone in the dub. Originally, when he had the determined glare on his face, he mentioned that they were looking for it. In the dub, he says to Al how it's finally theirs.
-After beating the oversized bird, the chimera leaps at Ed and we hear him scream, yet when the camera pans to him, he's alright and seems to know what he's doing. Such was not the case in the original. The chimera simply leapt at him and all we hear was the sound of it biting. No scream or anything.
-An even more serious dialouge change. As Ed's ripping off his coat, he's explaining the following to Rose: "This is the body of one who enroached upon human transmutation, the territory of God...The Sinner's Body!" Note how his mouth was closed by the time he finally tosses his coat aside. They had Ed asking if that was the body Rose wanted if she did the same in the dub. "Is this what you want?!" ended up being said the moment we see his mouth was entirely closed in the dub.
-After Cornello states that Ed's limbs were taken to the other side, Rose recalls what Ed told her back in front of the shrine. In the dub, Ed repeats himself rather than Rose recalling it as a memory.
-For those wondering, the original version DID have the opening as the ending but only for this episode. Since [adult swim] will be playing Ready Steady Go as the opening for the whole series (there's originally four opening in total), we heard that played instead of the first opening Melissa. At least they kept the whole opening scene from Melissa the same. Remember, this will be ONLY for the [adult swim] run. So when you get the DVDs, the openings will be as they were in the Japanese version.

You forgot that in the Japanese Version, Ed calls Cornello a "third-rate." (Reffering that Cornello just uses cheap Alchemy and not learn it himself)
Con man is such a lame word to use... (IMO, that is...) XD
Also, when the Chimera was attacking Ed, Ed said in the Japanese version that "Oh boy, how am I supposed to fight a chimera with my bare hands?" Also, the clap was changed. Now, it sounded more realistic when Ed claps his hands. (Before, it sounded as if he claps with his bare hands even when he wears gloves).
There was also a part where Ed was forcing Cornello to give them the stone. Ed was waving his hands when Cornello mentioned about the military. In the Japanese version, he was actually making fun of the military (or something like that. His voice changed to give them a sarcastic comment, thus the funny hand-wooshing sound)
The man in the raincoat

I wish everyone would stop assuming that. Check the first episode again in Japanese. The clap was UNTOUCHED. The littlest dialouge I am not touching since it had the same exact meaning. :\

False. Those who are starting off with the dub have no idea who that guy is. Revealing info that they didn't know about since it hasn't been revealed in the US yet is still a spoiler, no matter what the event is.

Not many people would be smart enough to actually look into them, though. :P They just go ahead and check out the anime without looking at the site to see who's who. Considering the site also has synopsis for the first four episodes, I'd somewhat consider that as a spoiler. But really, why are we arguing about me referring to Roy as an unidentified character? XP
Anyways, I downloaded the first episode in English to have a better comparison (ran both English and Japanese at the same time and listened to the English version while reading the subs for the Japanese version) so I edited a few things from my post (and everywhere else I put the comparisons up x_x). I'll probably be doing this more often so I have a better ability to compare the two. Plus I'll be working on a more detailed version of what I posted (like full sets of dialogue that gets changed and some other things) for my own site, so I'll be sure to point you all in that direction.

Ed's voice requires alot of getting used to. It simply doesn't fit at all when he's a kid. The voice actor simply cannot bring Ed to life like Romi Paku did. Al just needs to get used to doing voice acting. It's his first job and he's got the perfect voice for Al. He just needs to get used to it and use more emotion.

My guess would be either Viz or TokyoPop that gets a hold of it since they seem to be the two that grab the most popular series' and the more recognizable manga translators around.

I would want TokyoPop to translate it... *currently hating Viz for stopping Pokemon Special* but oh well...
The manga has a very nice story line, too. Though it changes some of the characters and the plot completely seperates from the anime, it's still one of the best manga I've ever read. ^^

Gluttony sounded horrible. x_X Didn't have the same kid-like tone in his voice and he said words other than "Lust, can I eat him?" Just about through out the whole series, that's about the ONLY thing he should be saying.

From what I've heard, Vic's young Ed doesn't sound too promising. :\ I think the reason Romi Paku does such an amazing job is because she's played different roles and has experience with them. She's done the role of a kid and teen (Ichijouji Ken/Dejimon Kaziaa from Digimon is a perfect example).
Al, on the other hand, sounds absolutely perfect as a human child. o_o;

I dunno, I didn't think Ed sounded TOO bad in the bit at the end of the last episode, though it probably will be intresting hearing a 6 or so year old child with a deep-ish voice XD It probably would have been better if they had cast another child actor to do Ed though (*Like how they had child actors for the flashbacks in Fruits Basket to play the characters when they were children*) but never mind, I'm sure Vic tried his best to sound younger ^^;
But yes I agree with your comment on Al's VA, he sounded perfect as little human Al X3 Eeee! The cuteness!

Exactly my point. The were killed FROM THE FRONT and we see later on that they're lying on the floor face first. o_O
I liked Roy's voice. If his voice actor can give him the same cocky attitude the original had, he's perfect.

Yay for the comparison!
The synopsis, did you write that up yourself, or what?"We used some of the money to find ourselves a teacher." Wrong. Later on, it's revealed that the boys saw that Izumi (their sensei) is an excellent alchemist. They begged and pleaded her to take them on as her students, even though she told them flat out that she was not making anyone her students. She wasn't exactly a teacher to begin with. Methinks this error occured from the writers not having seen the whole series yet.I noticed that too and I'm like "WTF? Since when did they pay her?" XD

I'm extremely lazy and tend to go way into detail when it comes to writing up synopsises, so I basically just combine whatever the FMA site and [adult swim]'s site say. XD
I think I should start doing the synopsis myself since the fourth one doesn't seem too right since Majhal doesn't have any problems with any ghosts since he passed them off as just stories. >_>;

Yeah I noticed a lot of those changes too, especially the ones with them saying the letters were FROM Hohenheim and saying they paid for an Alchemy teacher :p
I didn't mind the change of dialouge when Al claimed Ed would just "turn into a jerk" without him. I was too busy squealing how cute that line sounded XD;;

Hi all, Im new to PC. Anyways I love FMA , been watching every episode on AdultSwim. I like it mainly because it's not another show that has the normal stuff (like shows with giant robots, all the Gundams, Big-O) I get bored with shows that are predictable after a few episodes. FMA = My fav show (sucks that it only comes on once a week)

So nice to see people were wondering about me. T_T I've had some connection problems, but I'm back now. I'll be doing the comparison for episode four later. I was somewhat pleased with the episode, but disappointed at the same time.
Pros: No name changes, cuts, censors. Voices were great.
Cons: Ed and Al's voice acting was weak in this episode. Especially when they should have been going nuts during the point where they kept falling over eachother and Ed flipping out over fireworks (something he's never seen before yet they never mentioned in the dub). Tons of name mispronounciations. Kuhrin? Claws? x_X; Plus Karin's final scream was pretty weak sounding. What was up with having Ed call Klose a "paper boy" rather than just a regular boy? I'm certainly hoping that they're saying General HaKURO in the next episode and not General HaRUKO like in the synopsises up on [adult swim]'s site.
And yes..Klose does look better as a girl. >_>

I'll be doing a special comparison. I'll try to grab voice clips from both versions to compare the name pronounciations and sounds to show what I meant earlier.
Edit: Btw, it seems like no one's released a torrent or anything regarding the fourth episode of FMA in English. o_o Anyone mind helping me out for comparison's sake?

I watched yesterday's episode...
Hmm...Roy is maintaining a pretty good voice acting. Hawkeye's voice seems pretty good. Though Hughes...er...most of the time, when he's in serious mode, it's as if he's reading off from a script... >< Hughe's VA should work on Hughes' seriousness. Though his obsessed side seems pretty fine to me.

I missed yesterday's epsiode what happened.
Elite Trainer Raven
December 5th, 2004, 07:05 PM
No no. Hughes' voice actor (Sony Strait) should work on his goofy side. He gets into his Krillin voice too easily and then sounds completely different when he's serious. x_X; The serious voice is good and you couldn't tell it was Krillin. My only problem with Hughes was they made him out to be joking when he was wondering about his wife. Through out the whole time we see Hughes, he's never said he jokes about his obsessiveness. >_>;
Anywho, as I said, I posted the comparison up for this week's episode. Though ChibiGoku hasn't been around, someone *finally* managed to put up episode 4 after 5 aired: http://www.falkinss.net/FMA/%5BNanashi%5DCN%20Fullmetal%20Alchemist%2004.avi

oni flygon

Hmm...I see
Though I think the serious side was a little bit monotonous compared to the original version. The reason I liked Hughes in the first place was that he was pretty dual sided. The obsessive part should be worked up a bit...same for the serious side.

Brief description: Edward and Alphonse Elric have lost their mother to an illness that resulted to her death. The two young brothers try to use the method of Alchemy to try and revive their mother even though it's forbidden among other alchemists to preform any practices of human transmutation. They failed; resulting in a high penalty. Al loses his entire body and Ed loses his left leg. He then binds Al's soul into a suit of armor, sacrificing his right arm. Ed and Al are now searching the world to find the legendary Philosopher's Stone to try and restore their bodies back to normal. Unfortunately, the task is difficult, the stone is thought to be just a legend and there are other people getting in the two brothers' way.
FMA's a huge hit in Japan and is proving to be a hit in the US due to it now being the 2nd highest rated program on [adult swim]'s Saturday lineup. It's totally not a waste.
The show airs on Saturday nights at 12am and 3am on Cartoon Network. Encore presentations air on Thursdays at 12:30am and 3:30am.

Just saw episode 8 and it was so awesome X3 I actually loved Ed in this episode and the end made me want to burst out crying as much as the Japanese version did and Barry the Choppers voice is love! <3 (*Though a bit weird to hear Kyou from Fruits Basket's voice coming from a cross dressing serial killer XD*)
The only other thing I have to say is: Whoop dee Flippin' do! XD *dies*

Too bad Ed's dub voice totally sucked in this episode. Vic has absolutely NO IDEA how the original emotions were played out through this episode. --;
Those who heard Barry's voice may recognize him more as the voice of Jimmy Kudo (Shinichi Kudo) of Case Closed (Detective Conan).

I just saw this Saturday's episode. It was cool! Though, I think this one is before the one about the fake Philosopher's Stone. The girl was pretty cute^^ I forget her name.

I try not to dwell on the Japanese voices too much, I try and avoid watching the episode in Japanese anytime before I see that episode dubbed so I can enjoy the dub that much more.
I agree Paku Romi's voice is godly comapired to Vic's in terms of emotion but I think Vic does an alright job of it. There's one thing I've always noticed and that's Japanese VA's do a better job getting emotion through than the VA's who do the english dub, so I think all things considering he's doing the best he can, you can't expect him to sound and do things exactly like Paku Romi could, I'm sure that would be quite hard to do ^^;
Like I said that episode, for me, still had me tearing up in the same way the Japanese version did.
I've never seen Case Closed XD Just another one of the animes we don't get in England until they decide to release some kind of DVD which usually takes ages X____x;

Quite impossible for myself since I've seen the entire series in Japanese already. :P There are times where Vic does a decent job as Ed. But this episode was not one of his best moments at all. :\

I've seen the entire series in Japanese already too XD But for some odd reason the dub voices don't bug me like they do other people. I know someone who dislikes Ed's dub voice completly where as I quite like it XD

I have never heard Ed's Jap voice. I have nothing against the dub voice. It's pretty cool in my opinion. He's got one heck of a temper too. lol
