Hey Pixel Art! first post ever in this forum woo

I doubt many of you are aware but the S&M section is currently underway with our first ever Fakemon project, located here (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=219045). Since we operate our own shoddy server, this gives us the ability to add our Fakemon to the server. We now have a workable concept that's ready for the next step:

Typing: Fire / Ground
Ability: Inner Focus / Flame Body
Base Stats:
HP: 85
Atk: 70
Def: 120
Spd: 103
SAtk: 95
SDef: 67
BST: 540

Okay, the HP and Attack were bother lowered, but HP is the significant one. This hurts it Special Defense more (though I did raise the Special Defense some so that might have little effect anyway). On the contrary, Speed and Defense are up. This gives it all that Speed in the world since it beats stuff like Lucario. My one worry with this edit is that people might use it as an attacker, as Ground and fire are great STABs to have. However, I don't really see the merit in doing this when bulky Waters still give it hell and 95 base Special Attack still is not spectacular. The Defense gives it a nice chance to bury poor Lucario and use ScarfTar as set-up bait (assuming it's not locked in on EQ).

With the higher Speed, Jirachi is less of a pain and Inner Focus is less necessary. for this reason, I added Flame Body as a way to catch some physical attackers and possible burn them. I thought about Immunity but decided against it--scaring away every Spiker in the game and beating Rotom is enough of an advantage. You don't necessarily have to understand the competitive mumbo-jumbo, but essentially what we're looking for is a Fakemon that compliments this typing, as well as its stats and abilities.

That's where you come in! We need to get a good sample of high-quality sprites to vote on to find the best match for our creation. The concept itself is not up for revision, but essentially you guys are free to create whatever you wish in a way you feel compliments what we have so far. S&M'ers are kinda brain-dead when it comes to art so we're looking forward to see what you guys can come up with. With respect to names, you're free to name your sprite whatever you wish, though S&M will be discussing this as well. We'll of course take your input into consideration when voting on a good name.

Also: We want a front sprite, back sprite, and shiny sprites for both of those. For a couple of examples, look here (http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70838). There they include female and male sprites too which would be great but not completely necessary if you don't have the time...but they're basically the same anyway =p. As for the size, I'm pretty sure it's 80x80...whatever those sprites are/whatever is used in 4th generation games.

So, "What's in it for me?" you may ask. Well a few things actually. Of course, the satisfaction in knowing that you've played an important part in an official PC project is always nice (S&M will be eternally grateful.) Your sprite will obviously be featured on PC's shoddy server for all to see (You will be credited for the sprite on our welcome page.) In addition, you'll also receive an emblem featuring your winning sprite.

We'll allow one week for all submissions, so on Sunday, June 5th, all entries must be posted in this thread. After that, the entries will be posted in the S&M Fakemon thread, where we will pick a few favorites and vote on them in a poll. Feel free to give us your input during the voting process.

Any questions can be posted in this thread. Good luck to all of you and thanks for your help!

I'm not exactly what you're exactly looking for but here is a fire/ground pokemon that might fit.

Molteon
-Fire/Ground

:folk lore states that it hatches from an eevee egg sat upon by a slugma and was raised by vulpix.

Two questions for you. Do you want both a front sprite and a back sprite? Are the dimensions 64x64 or 80x80?

I haven't done much spriting or pixel art lately, but I'd love to try this. What file format do you need to upload to Shoddy, plain ol' .GIF?

So, it's our responsibility to choose a good name for that Fakemon or are we going to vote for a good name?

Also, I think this thread should be a sticky :\

One week isn't much time to work with if we're making a front and back sprite.

I mean, I can do it, but I was already working on something that happened to fit with the contest. I'm sure there'll be a fair number of entries anyway since it's a contest and all. Just saying.

If people need more time, we can always shift the deadline back a bit. But this has been a fast-moving project from the get-go and we'd like to keep with that theme.

I hope there will be more entries. Here's mine. (No name at the moment.)

I can change the file format if needed.

I'm almost done with mine (insert long story here about losing tablet pen), but I just want to make sure...the last day is this Sunday, correct? The original post says Sunday, June 5th, but June 5th is a Saturday...

I'm not making a sprite or nothing, but shouldn't we have a contest for the actual pokemon? or is the only art for said pokemon a sprite and no "official" art?

We might extend the deadline since we don't have a lot of entries, but try to get it done asap.

We're only voting on sprites, no actual art.

I have an entry:

I don't have a fixed name, but I'm thinking something like Dezzard (desert + lizard)

Alright, thanks for the submissions guys. First of all, remember that you don't need to come up with a name (though you can if you want, but we won't necessarily use it :x). But other than that, I've talked to some S&Mers and I'll post what seem to be the general feelings of our members. You CAN edit your submissions so feel free to do that too.

@Scarf: Everyone seems to like it since it looks pretty much like a Nintendo DP sprite, so it fits in pretty well. One user was wondering if it has a mouth though and if you intended to leave it out, since some users think it looks kinda weird without one.

@shookie: Again, everyone seems to love the idea of the ram. The general feeling I get is that the frontsprite's pose is a little too dynamic which makes it almost blurry (aka the outlines aren't well-defined, I guess? I'm not artist lol). Either making its features more distinct/obvious and/or changing the pose a little would in many users' minds go a long way, if you want to change it a little. Still, it's a pretty popular design.

@musesum: Everyone seems to think that the quality of the actual spriting great but that the design of the monster is a little bare, which is basically the only complaint.

...So hopefully that was helpful. If you have any questions ask them here or on the server, and of course, more submissions would be great.

Also, you CAN submit more than one entry. If you have extra time, you can always submit more stuff.

Late reply, oops.

It should have a mouth, but somehow that detail escaped me when I was making it. If that's a problem I can try to fix it. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think it needs one, or a visible one anyway. I sort of assume it's there behind the smoke.

Alright, we'll probably be closing this up soon, so submit any last submissions in the next few days if possible. Thanks to everyone for posting.

Well after a few weeks we finally got our last submission that we were waiting for, so I guess this thread has served its purpose (not that anyone was looking at it anyway :x)

After discussing it on the shoddy server, we decided we're only going to take Scarf's submission for the final poll. I don't doubt that many of these submissions required a great deal of skill to make, but Scarf's is the only one that seemed to fit the mold we were looking for. I do want to thank everyone for their interest in our project and I'll be sure to post another thread for when we start our second version of the project.

Be sure to check out S&M and vote in the final sprite poll. Once again, thanks everyone!

Scarf I guess this thread can be closed whenever you see it.
