View Full Version : [B/W] Animation Discussion

I'm sorry if this doesn't belong here or has already been made, but I've looked and it seems like this is a good idea.

Pokémon Black and White have come, and with them brought an unprecedented feature in the Pokémon series; that is, fully-animated battles. To an extent anyway.

Some may not be. . . Excellent, but some are truly gorgeous. This thread is for discussing your likes/dislikes about the individual animations and animation implementation itself.

I'm looking for Tentacruel if anybody's seen it, or even a gif of it.

Another point this brings me to is that all of the Hoenn Pokémon are nicely animated, leading me to believe this is further evidence towards a remake.

Firstly, as a note to users, if you want to discuss whether this is in reference to a R/S remake, post it here (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=216780), rather than discuss it in this thread - though you can make a passing mention in your post, but any discussion goes there. As for sprite discussion in general, post it here (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=185180). Otherwise this thread is fine for discussing animations and the battle system as a whole, though just not triple battles, as that has its own thread.

The animation looks fantasic. :D

I love what they're doing with pokemon

(how does Reshiram learn hyper voice?)

Personally, I think they could have put a lot more effort in on some of them.

Groudon & Kyogre for example should have had the same treatment as Zekrom and Reshiram in regard to their markings lighting up.

Anyway, I do love how they've done Reshiram/Zekrom's animations. Making their tails animated makes their types, as well as meaning stand out more. I like how the entire battle is animated too, because it looks closer to realistic than any other games. I don't like the stretch when first releasing the PokeBall though, so when I finally get to play it, that might get a bit annoying for me. Oh and... I remember the first screenshots of Zoroark/Zorua, I thought all the battles would look like that, haha.

When I look at its hands while it's dancing, I can't help but think that Bellossom is rickrolling me.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/Gun6/Please%20host%20these%20on%20imageshack/DesukanFront.gif
I like how Desukan's hands and face would withdraw into the sarcophagus at times.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/Gun6/Please%20host%20these%20on%20imageshack/SazandoraFront.gif
It appears as if Sazandora's main head is in control of its other 2 heads.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/Gun6/Please%20host%20these%20on%20imageshack/ShibirudonFront.gif
I don't like how Shibirudon is jumping around like that. It makes it look silly.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/Gun6/Please%20host%20these%20on%20imageshack/WigglyAni01.gif
This suits Guildmaster Wigglytuff's (from the Mystery Dungeon games) personality perfectly.

Who doesn't like a Pokemon whose pants fall down each time it pulls them up? I find Zuruggu's animation hilarious.

Wow. Thanks for the sprites, PlatDude!
I like the animation of Zuruggu!

The animations in the games never end, don't they?
And, those videos are too cool!!

I really love all of these animations.
That makes the game more real, not just a "game".
I think GameFreak had make a great remake of these Pokemon Sprites, too.

Same here Hopefully they would fix that up in the third or later versions.
The Manaphy animation reminds me a lot of it's DPPt animation when you are looking up it's stats...

I assumed Manaphy's antenna would have that red glow that they had befire, and in the film when it would use it's signature move Heart Swap. Or Groudon and Kyogre's patterns would glow like in the anime of Ruby and Sapphire openings.

Yeah most of us I'm guessing assumed that Kyogre and Groudon would have had it's signs flash same with Rayquaza...

Nattorai's animation is awesome. It acts like it is using its tentacles to hang from the ceiling then it bobs up and down. :3

I expected more out of Roserade..it's just moving up and down and side to side. :(

Ugh! If Roserade would have just swayed side to side the entire time that would have been better... I'm on the search for a new mascot.

Ravecat

Still really want to see Tentacruel. . . I hope it's good.

Regarding Roserade, I think it's okay, but yeah the swaying is better.

Ugh...I wish Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza did have their markings glow. Especially Groudon; his markings hardly glow blue at all in most depictions. Kyogre's and Rayquaza's tend to be on constantly, so theirs are more noticeable... Actually, I think that should go for all Pokemon with glowing patterns. I think my first glances at such patterns were Umbreon and Lanturn in Pokemon Stadium 2. Looks much cooler in darker arenas. Seeing Pokemon like Umbreon and Lanturn glowing occasionally would be a nice touch.

Anyway, I like how Reshiram and Zekrom flare up occasionally, hinting at their strength. IMO, side by side, they reference the common red vs. blue mascot theme first established with the U.S. releases of Pokemon Red and Blue Versions.

Zuruggu's animation is too funny! :cer_laugh: A perfect example of why we need more than 2 frames in the sprite animations.

Also, the popular sites such as Bulbapedia should definitely feature the animations as their current sprites on the respective articles.

I was anticipating that too, since most (not all :() of the pre-Generation V have been rendered with GIFs/APNGs, or something to that effect. However, I'm figuring it's taking a while to upload all of the BW sprites to the Bulbagarden Archives, let alone the animated BW sprites... :\ So it would be inconsistent right now if only some Pokemon had BW sprites and the rest had HGSS ones...

And anyway, I'd rather wait until the English releases for a full "current sprite conversion", but that's just me.

Ravecat
October 10th, 2010, 10:44 PM
Yeah, I'm okay waiting, I just think it should happen eventually.
Because of the availability of animated .gifs this generation, there isn't really a reason not to.

I LOVE Venomoth's animations.

It's so much like an actual moth, not staying in one place, fluttering about.

It's definately an up for me for Black and White :D.

Personally, I think this is about 10 years too late for me to really get excited about animated sprites. They have been an industry standard for more than a decade. :/

That being said, I think that the Gen V pokemon look great when animated. Single sprites on sites like Serebii and Bulbapedia can't do the designs justice. Standouts for me are:
Reshiram
Zekrom
Zuruggu
Shimama (I love that its mane changes colors!)
Dokkora (the way it tosses that log around is awesome)

And that's as far as I've really gotten in the games. I'm only in Laimon City. Can't wait to meet Emonga on the next route!

I'll be glad with anything, I aren't picky and it's hard work making every single Pokemon moves, I'm so giving the maker loads of credits! ^^

I remember having its animation sprite as my theme. I love it's animation, and the way it glides low and flows back onto the floor is endearing; thumbs up to GameFreak on Emonga. d("d)

I fond quite a lot of the B/W animations, none of them (that I've seen so far) have bothered me that much. They are fun to watch especially now that they can move during a battle.

The animations in general are probably one of the reasons why Black/White has won its place as my favorite generation. The battles are more interesting to participate in instead of being some tedious "keep hitting the 'A' button" sort of thing. The dynamic camera view is really nice, too.

One of my favorite animations is probably Jynx's. It's just plain fabulous.

I believe the animation is great but I think it is because I do not have a DSi that it isn't as great as I have seen it.

Aw, it is quite adorable. :3 I just love how it goes from left to right and does a little hop; the purple fire on its head sways with Hitomoshi's movement so that's a good addition as well. As for Doreida, its pose and movement has a graceful touch in its design which makes it an attracting yet beautiful animation. Seeing the animation makes it seem so sweet and innocent too, and I definitely plan on having one on my team as I've said before previously.

None of the Generation V Pokémon animations have disappointed me so far. I'm glad they are able to keep their movement throughout the battle as well, something I've wanted for a while now.

The only problem I have is that there are no hurt and attacking frames. Just those two alone would make it much more interesting.

It also ends up greatly increasing the workload of the graphics and animation team, which is why most of the animation is done through segmenting areas of the sprites (limbs, tails, etc) and transforming them (movement, rotation, scale etc) with some use of drawing new parts of the sprite.

At this point adding a generic attack/hurt animation (and maybe something like a dodge animation I don't know) is about as much as we'll see out of a Pokémon game that uses 2D graphics, as anything more becomes a tremendous task on the part of the graphics team to draw and animate for over 1000 sprites (front & back)

I understand this, and I'd be completely okay with them using this technique to make the hurt/etc. animations
If they feel like spriting an all new frame, that's fine too.

I definitely don't expect any more than this in the next few generations, at least until they start delving into 3D models.
