ok this is from toothache:


Rock Slide is a good alternative for Earthquake, and you can breed that across by passing Aerial Ace and Dragon Dance over to Larvitar, and breeding back.

Taillow -> Swablu -> Charmander -> Larvitar -> Charmander -> Salamence

Pick up Aerial Ace from Taillow, Dragon Dance from Swablu, and Larvitar can give you Rock Slide.

- Rock Slide

ok now the problems start...i cant get rockslide from larvitar to charmander...i get DD and AA ok but not RS.

does anyone kow the reason for this at all?

here is my theory:

when charmander is hatched, it will already know scratch and growl, plus two extra moves, in this case Aerial Ace and Dragon Dance. and since all POkemon can only learn four moves, all move slots have been taken and you may have to forget one of the three target moves that you are trying to get.
i think thats how it goes, i am realtiely new to the whole breeding for moves things

I was under the impression that Move Tutor moves could be breeded as well, in the same way as TM moves, and since Charmander and family can learn Rock Slide from the Move Tutor, I thought they could learn it from breeding. Turns out that it's not possible to breed Move Tutor moves, which is a complete pain.

So, sorry to say that it messed up my previous breeding chain. Only solution I can suggest is wait until Emerald is released to get all the Move Tutor moves there (since you can get most of them multiple times, check the Emerald sticky in RSE forum for the complete list)

that is correct. move tutor techniques can be inherited by breeding, but it is lower in the order of technqies. If the male has Dragon Dance, Aerial Ace and Rock Slide, then the offspring will have all of them but a newly bred charmnader will already have scratch and growl.
the only reason i can think for this moveset not working is that the moves are inherited aplhabetically, which would explain why charmander learns aerial ace and dragon dance but not rock slide
