Pokemon Lightning Yellow
Current Version: 0.18
Released: 27 July 2012

Plot:
The plot is basically Pokemon Yellow remade. There are a few main changes.
Professor Oaks tests out your skills by lending you a Pokemon in order to capture the Pikachu at the begining.
All 151 Pokemon are obtainable in some way or another, as well as the original 151's pre/post evolutions from later gens
Breeding is possible like in the later games.

The name is taken as a ROM Hack and as a Game Before. Change it.

Overall, good progress. Nice yellow remake.

Nice start but I think you should try using newer tilesets. Also, because you're using the small R/S/E/FR/LG character and the large HGSS Pikachu it makes the Pikachu look larger than the character himself lol.

Game doesn't always have to be dual screen to make it look better and that script is sooooooo outdated it's believable. Most people just go into the sprite resizer and change the resolution there. But, one thing you need to think of, is the game creator able to script.

The game actually looks fine, it seems your mapping style Desbrina suits the gen III style and I kinda like it although the Gen IV overworlds don't seem to mix well with the tiles so either down grade the overworlds or maybe upgrade the tileset. Other than that I don't see anything wrong with your game. Plot seems basic at the moment but I can see you are planning for something big.

Most of the overworld sprites are placeholders at the moment. They will be switched to Gen III style.

As for the plot, it mostly stays the same as yellow, except for after the elite four it changes


My RGSS scripting is still basic though i'm learning. I pick things up pretty quickly, but at the moment theres not really much script change wise, just a few bug fixes

Route 3 has been completed and a demo is now available. Please let me know if you find any errors or anything. I have played through it but may have missed something. The demo contains everything up till route 3

Maps up to Cerulean City and half of the city are done. I've also made it so that the Pikachu you get at the biginning won't evolve (like the series). Others that you can get will (and you will have the chance to encounter/get 1 more Pikachu)

New demo will be available when Cerulean city and its gym is done. This time i'll make the bgm files a seperate download since they are large in size

You know, you can just use Curt's Region Starter Kit. It's fully mapped out already save for a few cave maps, and its in your tileset style.

Maybe she'd like to map them out on her own instead of having the entire game mapped out for her. (And if I'm not mistaken, the events are already made, too.)

Anyways, yes I have to agree with what a few members have said here. You should definitely switch to some more modern graphics when remaking a game. Otherwise, it'll be FRLG with a few tweaks to it.

I'm still debating whether to include pre/post evolutions of the 151 pokemon or notI say you do it, adds more to the game. Just 151 isn't all that many, and honestly, they are related Pokémon. If your going to include breeding, the entire families should be there.

I also vote you take a few more liberties with your versions of the maps. Keep them close to the original, but mix them up a little and change a few things just to add your own creative twist.

The map seems to be a bit too open, and there's a few errors with the fencing and the pond.
If you just make the map smaller, then put everything closer together, I think it'll definitely improve it.

I like it! This looks a lot better! With that said:

I agree, it should be a little less open, the pond a little wider. I like what I'm seeing so far though, keep up the good work!

There is a problem with your Pallet Town. Pay attention to the trees on both sides.

As for Route 1, looks alright so far, thought the right side of that little plateau looks like it's using a wrong tile, just in case you hadn't noticed.

Not done much mapping today, but have been working on a mystery gift system. It works fine except i haven't inplimented specifing attacks yet

Nice game, so far.
My only advice is that you should take screenshots when it is daytime.
That way, the screen will look clear. ^_^
And, about your doors in the houses, it will be better if you download the door animations. I'll provide an attachment. But, credit Curt's Region Starter Kit for the door animations! :classic:

Route 01---

Alright. It's your game anyway. If you intend to work on it when it is night, you can just adjust your computer clock and after taking some shots, return it back to normal. Can't wait for the demo!!!! ^.^

Yeah. It connects to a database on the Internet which has the pokemons info in it. It then downloads the info and creates from that

One little recomendation for the parcel script.
You should make the player walk up to the cashier to obtain the package instead of just getting it from afar

I'd have Missingno only if you have it appear the same way as it did in Pokemon Blue. Having it crash your Hall of Fame and all.

Dunno about crashing the hall of fame the same way it does in R/B/Y, it'd be kinda hard to do. I was just thinking of adding it either as a event or catchable like it was originally, since it was originally in the games.

Theres a few things i want to take out before the demo, just files that aren't used yet, mainly audio, which is over 120mb at the moment, to keep the download size down.

Pikachu does follow you, its just i've been using the warp to map option in the debug menu so i skipped the event that allows it to walk

THe HG/SS tilesets fit really well
Have you thought of what sort of character sprie you're going to use or are you just going to stick with the one you have?

I also think you should leave missingno out, It is always an interesting feature to add for nostalgic sake but I think it could lower the integrity of what is shaping up to be a very impressive game

Which is another reason why I think you should expand slightly further from using in game sprites, Granted i'm not quite sure which game you are using btu I recognise the brock sprite and I think you could make it graphically even more appealing if you got some custom sprites in

Look forward to any more progress on this!

i like the first set, but i'm after them for the kanto gym leaders, so brock, misty etc

i like the title screen and userbars. Would you be able to resize the screen to 480x320 though?

Yeah I think you should recolour, would give the whole game that upgraded feel

Obviously there's limited colours so some are a touch simliar in particular Koga/Agatha/Sabrina
Poison/ghost/psychic all say purple to me so they are a bit simliar =\

No, the Pikachu is currently done using dependant events

Demo should be soon, just been sorting out trainer sprites and a bug with trainer battles causing the game to crash

I'm sure you can hide Pikachu and make it so the player is on a Lapras (or designated surfing Pokemon) with Pikachu hanging on as well. And with some scripting, make it so that if Pika's in the PC, it will just be the player on the Lapras.

Or to make things simple, just deny Pikachu the ability to be stored via a small script.

It might not be a script. It can be accomplished with simply an event.

The vs is a mixture of script and event.

From what i remember in the original yellow pikachu come in from the side, not out a pokeball. THats how i intend it anyway, just haven't worked out how to get it to do it correctly yet

Just saying there's some bugs that need to be fixed isn't helpful one bit.
Next time actually mention what the bugs are, and if you know how to fix them, help the creator out.

The bugs are very noticeable though, i'm pretty sure the creator knows about most of them i encountered, though i didn't really play much..
All i no is that when you go into the LAB, the PROF. doesn't let you leave... the only way i found to leave is to by pass it by going around the two book cases.

I forgot the rest but there were much more :P ill play it again later

The only bugs that i'm aware of are listed in the first post.

As for the one with the Professor, its not one that i've come across. Have you done everything in the lab. Talk with the professor, try and get the pokeball, talk with prof again then try to leave but be stopped for rival batttle?

Also, your character's house and your rival's should be switched around. Ash's house is supposed to be on the left side.

Not really, i have all the vs/mugshots for the main trainers. Also, i couldn't use them since the vs background and mugshots are separate files since the background is animated

It might be a good idea to reduce the shading from Red's brim, reason being is that it was done for epic effect in HG/SS and doesn't really work for a player character.

Gave in and decided to play the demo ..

Off the bat I think you should change the Intro Music when selecting name etc, Sounds to intense, Reminds me of the Pokemon stadium Gym leader tower .. lol
On that premise change it to something like the main stadium music, at the part wher you can choose GB tower, Gym LEader tower, the actual stadium or mini games, it's pretty happy iirc =D

If you used something more idk happy/bouncy? lol for the start it would improve it a lot and add an actual 'Pikachu' cry rather than the in game cery would make it sound a bit better aswell

And a new red sprite, I think someone else brought it up about the shading, under the cap jsut looks a bit .. much ..
He also appears to have a limp in the overworld when walking left or right ..


I walked in to the tall grass, oak says wait etc etc but no oak sprite actually appeared, in fact jsut entered the lab and there isn't a sprite for oak?
Although it would seem he shows up after gary takes the pokeball

The pokedex doesn't sit on the table it kind of hovers ?
The back wall of the lab is also 1 tile up where it should be in relation to the table/bookscases etc, Looks strange, You cna see it on the far left bookcase the shadow should touch the base of the wall and instead it touches a floor tile

And the reflection in pallet town starts a tile earlier sdo you're reflected on the grass looks a bit strange

I know you wanted to use the red sprite but have you thought about using a custom ash one?
I mean yellow was made to resemble the anime so it would make sense to play as ash

There's some invisible walls in the patch of flowers as you enter viridian

I like the music used, and as a big fan of the kanto region i feel you've done it great justice with yoru remake, Personally I prefer the pokemon sprites from gen 3 but mostly because pikachu jsut looks weird btu thats a preference thing ..
I like the new Vs screens and you have a pretty cool titlescreen aswell =P

Wild Pidgey hover.
If you walk to the mat at the stairs in your room, you immedeatly go down stairs.
A row of tiles is missing at the bottom of the stairs at your house (downstairs).
Pikachu's battle sprite is too high on the screen.
It may just be me, but the controls feel a bit awkward and unnatural
If you talk to Pikachu after a wild Pokemon battle, it says "Pika?", but then a box pops up with the message "Script 'Interpreter' line 509: NoMethoodError occured. undefined methood 'unlock' for nil:NilClass" and then the whole thing just closes after clicking OK.
Weird graphical glitch for your reflection in the Pallet Town water. May be in other towns too. Your reflection is on part of the bank, and in some places, does not reflect all of you. Also, Pikachu has no reflection.

several bugs have been fixed and will be included with the next update. The new RGSS104E.dll will now be included. It was missing because i'd updated my rpg maker and forgot to add the new dll to the folder

this remake is coming along well... & yet this one seems like it's going to be one of the best fanmade remakes.

if the game is finished being made in a few months, i will definitely consider it to my friends who love pokemon yellow.

I've changed the shading on the main character, as well as sorted out the problem with the pokedex not on the table correctly in oaks lab. It now also disappears once you get it

Whoa, dude. Chill. First of all, this isn't a rom. There is no emulator for this except RGSS player. Look that up. The download link is on the first post. And those caps are really annoying.

If you are then good,but you need to know the difference between RMXP and Emulators.Rmxp is built from scratch with the help of starter kits and can't play roms,Emulators are used to play illegal versions of Ds and GBA games and can't be played with RMXP.If that isn't what your looking for,then try typing on google Pokemon Lightning Yellow rom.

{i downloaded the demo and updated it
but when i started playing and went headlong into the grass where prof.oak came up to me and lend a pokemon to battle with
just as the battle started a message came about an exception of events
and when i clicked ok it crashed the game

played the game several times but everytime the error is same

p.s i also found a rom for this game
it is a bit different than yours actually yours is better
forgive me for mentioning this but i wanted to prove my claim for this game having a rom version as well}

i am sorry for making you angry but you need to understand that my nephews play games on their emulators only
their parents do not allow them hifi games
as those games can't run on their computers but this issue disappears when you are using roms and emulators

i for myself like this game a lot
it is way better than that stupid rom

heck i would have even helped a little but i don't even know the abc of all the programming involved

For those that get crashes when going to outdoor maps, if the crash is something to do with "time must be positive" then its a bug with essentials that i haven't been able to fix.

What moves does the pikachu know? When i download i get one that knows surf. If it knows it and you still can't surf then its to do with the pikachu which i will get sorted at some point

It's not too complicated. One npc will deal with adding a pokemon/checking existing. Another will deal with the searching and trading. Adding a pokemon is already sorted, I haven't done the what your looking for in exchange yet.

I think I know what it is. If it's showing info about anpokemon then It's not an actual error. Just ignore it. Should be removed in version 0.4. If your not running that then update, otherwise I'll check it out when I get home

Good to see this project is taking off well. The downloads on the site lead to an error page, in case that was not known. I do have one Quirk towards the Missingno. Sprite. Now, I realize it's a Yellow remake, but, you could add the Sevii Islands for a more extensive adventure. And if you do that, I believe it is plausible to update Missingno.'s Sprite to a 3-5th generation.

I was surprised to see a "Lightning Yellow" around. I almost forgot about my 3 year-old hack (also named Lightning Yellow) until I saw this. The screenshots are amazing, and they make my game look pathetic. I hope this project doesn't die, and good luck with it! I'll be sure to try it out some time.

I remember when you first posted this and I was saying to myself "Probably gonna be another failed remake." Well, I must congratulate you because you have made it further than I ever thought you would (not that my thought is that important). I said about a month ago that I wouldn't play this game until you made it to Vermillion because I didn't want to play a game without the possibility of obtaining Squirtle, so I have just downloaded the game and now will start playing.

The GTS is Online like the DS games. There's no direct trading between people like the trade/union rooms like the games. I want to be able to have that but still trying to work out the best way of doing it

Hi everyone!
Well I find interesting the project, a remake of Pokemon Yellow ...
I like the idea.
Well, now talk about the rest of the details:
I guess the plot and story are the same, only with other features and new developments.
The tiles are not bad, but I think that being a remake itself could use other types of tiles, such as those used now, like B / W and as the OW's.
The blades are the originals of each tile, so it would look more customized the visual appearance could set a color for each tile of either a tree or a building your own colors.
The maps look good, the bad are the graphics, which as I said above, are seen.
The interior tiles you use I love, the Vermilion City Gym is great. Good work, I love VS bar is perfect for your project.
Well now I have nothing more to say or think, I just hope more updates and news of the game.

Nice game! It's a creative twist on the original Yellow version. A few complaints though: No Sprites for Pikachu after you lost to it for the first time, when you talk to Pikachu more than once the game glitches and crashes, and no wild Pokemon music. other than that, the game is really good keep it up!

Which version of the game are you running? I've just played through till after the first rival battle and leaving pallet town and didn't encounter any of those using the latest (0.4). Can you also give me the message from the crash, i think its fixed in version 0.5 (unreleased yet) but i want to make sure

As for the tiles, it started off with fire red/leaf green tiles then was suggested to use hg/ss, and if i'm not mistaken, b/w had only just come out when i started so there wasn't tileset/sprites available.

Not sure what you mean about the blades

Just noticed that people may have had problems with the version 0.4 patch not extracting into the root folder, instead it was extracting to a completely different folder. You should be able to patch correctly now

Okay, seeing as there have been over 150 [or something like that] replies, I have not read them. So what I am about to say has probably been said, countless times.
When I first opened this up, I thought "oh great... another attempt at recreating one of the games..." Then I read it... and this is really good.. I looked at your website and you have actually made a lot of progress good job! I think the tiles are perfect for what you're doing. And all in all, this looks like a pretty sound project! Good Job! Your mapping skills are very sleek.
Played the demo, definitely impressed with the overall work you put into this.
Yellow was my favorite pokemon game because you could get charmander, bulbasaur, squirtle, and pikachu! I never really needed another party besides HM slaves. Game was awesome, and you're not doing it any shame.

I downloaded the demo and did a quick play through to get a feel of the game. Overall, I found the game quite enjoyable, but the lack of end punctuation and small mapping mistakes caught my eye.

I'd give this game an 7/10.

Dude i like your ideas, but in every map you have this obsession with the stairs.. everymap.... tone it down and i like how you broght kanto into the next generation but like i said tone it down on the stairs... and the battle screens need to be updated to fit the next gen too.. you still got FR/LG battle scenes...

I'm mainly going to comment on the GTS system, as it's the part I like the look of most (I'm a programmer myself).
The actual GTS makes trades in two ways. One is the standard way in which someone using 'Seek Pokémon' finds a Pokémon they want, then chooses a Pokémon matching the conditions set in exchange. You have this already. The other way is when the server automatically matches two deposited Pokémon with each other, if they mutually satisfy each other's conditions. Do you have the second method implemented too?
Next, you need a better interface for the GTS, rather than only using message boxes. Do you think you could make a full-screen (well, full-window) interface? This would let you, for example, use columns for the list of Pokémon, and give a visual representation of the search results much like the DS games.
Now, I'll suggest some features that I feel are missing from the official GTS, that you might want to implement.
Firstly, improve the 'wanted Pokémon' condition selection. It irks me that you have to specify a species; this should be optional much like level and gender. To make this effective, add a few more criteria that can be asked for, such as type, ability, or a learned move. This also has the advantage of letting people add to their Pokédex using the GTS, as they can get Pokémon they haven't seen yet in exchange.
If you've ever used the official GTS, you'll know it's filled with impossible and unreasonable requests (e.g. Zekrom, level 9 and under). Adding more criteria exaggerates this, so you'll need to filter those out somehow. I suggest adding a server-side check when a request is made that checks the request is valid (for example, it would reject a request for a level 9 and under Zekrom, or a Spiritomb with Wonder Guard). This would remove the impossible requests. Unreasonable requests can be avoided by allowing users to filter results by the wanted Pokémon (e.g. blacklist and don't display offers that request legendaries or level 100s, or only show offers that request a Pokémon the searcher actually has in their PC boxes).
Finally, allow users to view the full summary of a Pokémon in the search results - I often have to trade Pokémon away again because they're hacked or have an undesirable nature/ability.

On a completely different note, I agree with those people saying the battle graphics need to be updated - they're very inconsistent at the moment. At least upgrade/downgrade all Pokémon/trainer front and backsprites to ones from the same generation (you might need to do some edits for Red's backsprite if you upgrade to 4th/5th gen).

Other than that, the game looks very promising. I love it when developers put some effort into scripting instead of just mapping; games running on plain Essentials just don't do much for me :)

It looks really good. Two questions though, is that the main character you are going to use? I think that in Yellow you're character should look either like Red from the manga or Ash from the anime, since those are the characters your character is based off of. Also will other games made with essentials be able to trade with your game in order to get pokemon from other regions? (not fakemon or pokemon holding items)

At the moment it is the character unless someone wants to make one more like ash. I'm not a spriter.

As for trading with other essentials, no. Other games would need the trading scripts.
This one will only be able to trade with other lightning yellow games.

I watched the video and it looks good, but isn't Professor Oak supposed to catch Pikachu? Also what I meant before was I'm working on a game and it would be nice for my game to be able to trade with yours. That way people who play my game can get the pokémon they can't catch in my game and people who play your game can get pokémon they can't catch in their game.

Yes, originally Oak was supposed to catch Pikachu, but its not that easy to do a battle and you not control it.

As for trading between games, its unlikely to happen since both games would need exactly the same pokemon/items/moves/types etc otherwise if a game gets a pokemon with a type/move/item or even the pokemon themselves will crash it if its not available. Thats why you can't use the mystery gift/gts in the game if you haven't updated to the latest version, to stop those kind of errors

Anyway, all Pokemon are available in this, you have to use the gts (or trade center if i make one) to trade with other people to get them, but they are all obtainable

I don't have generation V pokémon yet but I will whenever they are added to the official essentials in probably about a month and if you use the generation V ones from the official essentials when they come out then there shouldn't be any problems. Also I think either you or I could create a script to keep us from trading items between the two games if you added new items.

I do have quite a few custom and edited pokemon and items as well as gen5 pokemon. Anyway, i don't really want trading outside of the games.

The scripts aren't for release either, their not even fully complete yet anyway.

All pokemon are obtainable, but you have to trade with someone else. Its like at Mt. Moon where you get the fossils. To get the one you didn't choose you'd have to trade with someone who did choose.

Have you thought of using the frlg sprite for ghost (forgot if there is one or not) and maybe you could use a DP sprite for the channelers.

I had thought about the frlg ghost sprite a couple of days ago but forgot.

I can't find anything about a channeler in dp. They only seem to appear in rby and frlg

I thought that you were using HG/SS/D/P/Pt overworlds any way so you can use the right overworld then no need to use the old lady sprite.

The old lady that you've shown is actually a Medium according to bulbapedia. According to them there are no channelers in hgss.

Made a bit of progress. Got most of the summary screens done, though i need to work out where in the code the red rectangle is done so i can move and resize it

Shouldn't there be no train station?
If wasn't present in R/B/Y and I know your trying to get the HG/SS appearance but you can just put a building on the station?

And, everytime ii talk to my pikachu i battle a wild pikachu o_O

i know about the pikachu, its fixed in the latest version. Its left over from a test.

As for the train station, its there till i decide whether i'm doing jhoto afterwards or not. If i decide i'm not it'll be removed. At the moment all that'll happen when you get is you'll get told that the station isn't finished being built

i played again and here's what I found wrong:
Rival walks 'in' you when he first battles you
Rival challenges you like a normal trainer in route 22 and doesn't have any speech
Hardly any NPCs which makes it feel, empty.
No indoor houses in Viridian City except PC and Mart
Extra uneeded grass on route 2
No indoor for the Gatehouse on Route 2-Viridian Forest.
I can't catch pokémon, it says the pokémon dodged the ball like in the ghost script.

I'll tell you when I find other stuff, but seeing all this makes me think it wasn't beta tested properlly
