So, what pokemon would yo say is too overhyped, too over used, and everything else that begins with the prefix "-over"? Do you like pokemon that are too overhyped? Can you think of a way to unpopularize that particular pokemon?

Heh, Probably Pikachu. Every time I mention that I like Pokémon to someone they tell me they love Pikachu, usually not too keen on the whole franchise - just seen a few episodes from the anime...

But yeah - Pikachu.

I'd agree with the above poster really, Pikachu always got on my nerves a little bit. I assume that, as Ash's sidekick, it gets automatic popularity. Pokémon Yellow Version really doesn't help here, lol.

Also Charizard. There seems to be a correlation between the Pokémon making big appearances in the Anime and Pokémon being overhyped...

I'd have to agree with the above posters as well.

It seems that whenever someone who isn't a fan of the franchise hears the word "Pokémon", the first thing that comes to their mind is Pikachu.

Lucario. 8/ It got a whole movie to itself and a slight plotline in the games (well, okay, Riolu comes from an egg you get... but eggs from NPCs are special!) and I find it wholly uninteresting. It's become less popular over time, especially now with Zoroark settling nicely into its place.

Pikachu is overhyped too but I'm absolutely fine with that because the more people who know it, the better. :P Means more publicity for the Pokémon franchise which it could probably use out west here.

The legendaries are sometimes overhyped. I think the newer ones are kinda boring.

Arcanine and Gyarados, for me. They're always regarded as brilliant battlers and yet I really don't care one jot about either of them. In the case of the former, it just feels boring: it's a fiery dog-thing that's supposed to be regal and elegant but comes across as arrogant. In the latter, my prejudice comes from the pre-Physical/Special split when Gyarados' attack reduced its effect. It's probably better nowadays, but I still have a bias against it from the olden days.

Personally, I think Bidoof got too overhyped, albeit as a bad Pokemon. It's not the spawn of Satan, it's another HM Slave.

Noob out.

Let's try to find something other than the obvious ones [Pikachu (Pichu is a big offender too), Starters (usually first and third form), Lucario (should die in a fire), Legendaries (especially the mascot ones)]... the Pidgey line. There's not really a lot they are good at, they have some of the more boring designs, yet people seem to love them.

Pikachu, Arcanine, Gyarados, Lucario, basically all ones that have been mentioned before. Also Eeveeloutions though I'm guilty of using one (Jolteon) myself.

Lucario - I sort of understand the hype for this thing, I suppose. It is quite the strong Pokemon, and a useful one to have on certain competitive teams, but other than that, there's no need for it to be more hyped than it already is. With that being said..

Zoroark - My favorite, especially when it comes to people overhyping this thing way too much. I can understand if this thing had some good defensive capabilities, but most of the time its really way too fragile to cause any damage at all, and one would especially have to plan really hard if they really want to bring Zoroark on out on a team and make it last(even though that's not really its purpose anyway).

That and really every single new legendary seems to be overhyped in one way or another, but I guess it's to be expected.

Agreeing with everyone above but mentioning pseudo-legendaries. Especially Hydreigon (I have no idea how to spell it) it was WAY overhyped from the beginning.

Haxorus was pretty overhyped on wifi, everyone thought it would be better than Garchomp but it turned out to be pretty mediocre.

Pretty much every pseudo-legendary is overhyped for their sheer power in battle. Honorable mentions go to Pikachu, Lucario and Zoroark.

basically all dragon pokemon, and gyarados and lucario.
as for pikachu and arcanine, well i like them, but thats purely based on their designs.

i wouldnt say the eeveelutions are over-hyped, they are just that awesome.

Lucario. Just because this guy have his own movie that doesn't make it a uberhaxxed pokemon. I'm actually pissed how post E4 Bruno in HGSS got a Lucario.

The same goes for Zoruark. I can imagine it being in Sidney team for RSE remake.

Pikachu is surely the overhyped of all. But it is the mascot of pokemon so one can expected that.

Lucario hands down. I can't even count how many usernames I have seen with Lucario in it. Lucario is a good pokemon but really this guy gets way too much love. Mewtwo needs more hype!

Magikarp is overhyped to the max, but for all the wrong reasons.

Poor Magikarp.

Pikachu is very overused. And almost every starter out there. Why? Well almost any trainer keeps their starter to the whole journey and others do the same. That is just my own opinion, though, don't flame me because you don't like my opinion.

Lucario. Mewtwo. Mew. Pikachu. Bulbasaur. Charizard. Rayquaza. Arceus.

ALL OF THEM. ALL THE LITTLE BASTARDS ARE OVERHYPED.

Pikachu, Live On Stage!
April 17th, 2011, 06:01 AM
Pikachu, definately but it is Pokemon's mascot basically so yeah, there would be hype <3
Charizard. When I was little, EVERYONE had at least one (in game or in their TCG deck)
Salamence and Garchomp. UGH. the most over used and overly hyped of the dragon family (with the same thing happening as Char.)
Mewtwo and Mew. The most popular legendaries and psychic types.
Out of all the lovely eeveelutions Umbreon is the most frequently used/mentioned.

I frankly don't care if certain Pokemon are over-hyped or whatever. That's up to the user's opinion. I use the Pokemon I like because I like them. I could care less what my opponent uses. :) They can use whatever they want. (Except for lv. 100 Arceus/other hacked Pokemon *casts sinister glare at my little CHEATING brother*)

Lucario I felt became overhyped very fast when It shouldn't of been.

I'd have to say Pikachu and Charizard due to reasons others have said before me.

Agreeing with everyone above but mentioning pseudo-legendaries. Especially Hydreigon (I have no idea how to spell it) it was WAY overhyped from the beginning.

It was?

Probably Lucario, it didn't really need to have a movie all about it.

From a competitive aspect - Zoroark, definitely. The introduction of Wifi Clause (aka you see your opponent's team before you fight them) ruined whatever surprise quality you get out of Zoroark being on your team and pretending to be something else. I mean, you could still catch people off-guard (like me because I always forgot what showed up) but still. :c

Haxorus was also overhyped. 147 BASE ATTACK??? Yeah, that 97 base Speed still lets you down, buddy. Oh, and your lack of any kind of Fire-type move. Or Stone Edge, even. :(

Definitely Pikachu. Don't have anything against them but it gets to a point where I would choose any other BUT him just because of how overexposed and over-hyped they are

Dragonite, Zoroark, Lucario and Hydreigon....
Those are the Pokemon I really hate seeing in teams. Also, Scrafty and all Unova starters a bit.

OK,OK I admit I love Lucario but to be honest I liked him before I even knew he had his own movie, but yes he is overhyped I will admit that, also it doesnt really matter if a pokemon is overhyped that DOES NOT mean its actually any good Eg. Pikachu I despise it, I mean its really, really bad unless u evolve it thats why I like to laugh at people who buy a pokemon game say they're going to beat everyone when they caych a pikachu then fail miserably,so yh I really REALLY dont like pikachu in-game.

I instinctively use underrated Pokemon. I really enjoy finding a rare, relatively basic Pokemon, and really bringing out its strengths and making them the best I can. When ever I find out a particular Pokemon is over used, I tend to heavily avoid using them. It brings out a greater sense of individuality for me, and is pretty cool seeing people using unorthodox teams that do work well a a team. :)

I'd say the pseudo-legendaries are overused, they don't feel so rare and powerful when everyone has them, so I try to avoid using them myself, (metagross is just so cool... he's hard to avoid).

Tyranitar is overhyped it has like 5-6 weakenesses... any pokemon with earthquake can destroy it.

dragonite seems to get icebeamed a lot too...

Pikachu, Charizard, Typhlosion, Scizor, Salamence, Lucario and quite a bit of legendaries. Don't get me wrong, I love all these Pokemon. But Pikachu, you just mention the word 'Pokemon' to anyone and that's their immediate response. Or maybe it is just me. My friends all know I love Pokemon, as well as some that do themselves, but for the people that don't play the games or only did in their childhood or whatever, Pikachu or Charizard comes to mind almost instantly.

People always used to talk about Mewtwo. When you ask a pokemon player or watcher if who Mewtwo is, they know. But if you ask pokemon player or watcher if who Dialga is, there is a percentage of that player or watcher not knowing Dialga.

Reasons are there are people who played the first version but some didn't play the second, third and fourth (like me :P).

So IMO, pokemons that are of earlier generations seems overhyped than those of the latter. Its just my opinion and source is my observation of the people around me.

And yeah, Pikachu is overhyped. But I want him to stay that way (cause its an electric type and its cute) :)

Pikachu, Sceptile, Salamence, Haxorus.

Pikachu. I think we all know why.

Sceptile was especially overhyped. I didn't find it very useful but nearly everyone was like it's the best Pokemon of the third Generation. Salamence too.

Haxorus was propably the most overhyped Pokemon of Generation V, at least in Smogon University. Base Attack of roughly Rayquaza's and STAB Dragon-type attacks just to name a few reasons. But people were soon like "We thought it would be awesome but it sucks" (http://www.smogon.com/smog/issue14/surprises).

I know it's your own opinion but sceptile is THE best grass starter barring DW serperior..Subseeder,physical attacker, special attacker, mixed attacker...It can do anything and better than most

I've actually come to hate Pikachu over the years because it's so dang overrated. But my main vote would probably go to Heracross. I think it has a weak movepool, even worse typing, and yet somehow works its way into competitive battling teams. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but seriously it should be a collector's item unless you like Heracross as much as I like Jolteon in which case building a team around it is perfectly justified.

Pikachu, mainly. I mean, I love Pikachu, but like everyone has said, when you think Pokemon, the first image that comes to mind is Pikachu going Pikaaa! He is (or should be..) Pokemons mascot. He had a whole game to himself (XD), he is Ash's partner in crime, and hes so cuuuute. Another I would say is Eevee and his line of evolutions. Sure, they are cute and all.. But seriously, I have never used one in my entire life. Dont really plan on it anyway, since there are much better Pokemon that I like a LOT better that I would rather take up that space in my party. Heck, 120 hours of play time on my SoulSilver and still havent picked up that Eevee from Bill or bob..Whatever his name is XD. Lucario is another one, he looks cool and all... But why did he get a movie to himself?!?!?!?!?!? And also that red Gyarados..Everyone dotes over him >_>.

Bloody SNORLAX. Now I actually love Snorlax, but no matter who you ask, if you ask someone their favourite Pokemon (Someone that doesn't actually watch or play Pokemon) they'll say Snorlax. No idea why they do but it's like a default answer. Oh, or Jigglypuff.

Come on, Dragonite is my fave!:'(

Anyway, Articuno is way over-hyped.
It has a 4X weakness to rock type moves so Stealth Rock would inflict serious damage.

Hello, the starters?! xD

All of the starters are overused (amongst my friends, at least), and they rarely give the other Pokemon a chance. Power-leveling isn't going to be the best idea, y'know?

I would spend hours trying to convince them that a well-rounded team is better than one with a Level 100 starter, and everything else at Level 20. It just doesn't make sense. *shakes head*

Pikachu's been the mascot of the franchise since its inception, I think it's absolutely fine that it's overhyped. I agree that Charizard is overhyped but I love Charizard so that's fine by me too :P

The Pokemon I think is way overdone is Gallade. Don't get me wrong, it's a great Pokemon, but EVERYBODY loves it, it's in half the teams out there. In my experience, anyway.

Pikachu, it's basically the icon for all Pokemon and it's overused. For a lot of people it's their favorite Pokemon, and frankly, it's weak and useless :<

I love Charizard as well :D
