I usually use the Japanese name of the Pokemon or one of its evolutions, if it sounds good
Raichu=Raichu, Ninetails = Rokon, Shedinja = Nukenin (although I think of him as Sheddy..) etc...
Some have other names though...
Swampert = Catfish (even though he isn't one, but he has cute whiskers..)
Skarmory = Skarmony (kind of like that 'Pekachu' in the game I guess. The harmonious sound of steel wings smashing the opponent...)
Skitty = Mau
Mightyena = Hyenadon
Zigzagoon/Linoone = RaccoonDog
Slugma = Sluggy

etc.
Often I name them after the animal/thing they're modelled on
eg. Trapinch - Antlion, Cacturne = Cactus,
I always name my Charmander/meleon/zards Carbrander for some reason...

I'm trying to think up a clever nickname for a meditite/medicham. Does anyone have any sugestions ?. I like to name pokemon after mythological beings (eg: greek gods, monsters etc) that look like the pokemon or are of the same element eg:Neptune (god of the sea) for water pokemon or objects of the same element eg:Nails (metal nails that you hit wth a hammer) for a spiky looking steel type pokemon or naming them after their main abillities eg: Biceps (the front muscles on your upper arm) for strong pokemon.

FireBird (blaziken),couldn't think up a creative name back then xD;
Gecko (sceptile) ..okay,get it?it's a gecko.a wood gecko,but it turns into a 'forest' pokemon.
Foris(sceptile) makes more sence..it's supposibly the origin for 'Forest'.
Vulcan(blaziken) some god of fire..i don't know..but i needed a name.
Sonus(blaziken) origin of 'sonic'..speedyness.i raised him in speed evs..heh.
Rappy(blaziken) came from a little bird on PSO..ever heard of it?
Blaze,Blaziken,Flamey (blazikens) I COULDNT THINK! O_O; and i can't change their names.
Flor(sceptile) flor means flower in spanish,maybe makes sence..they live in the woods..uh.i dunno.

Bane(absol) means fatal injury,leading to death.kind of makes sence,natural disasters...blah blah.
Miles(milotic) ..I couldn't think.

Tana(Mightyena) ..I don't know.
Disi(Spinda) origin of the word 'dizzy' which describes spinda quite well,i'd say.

"squirt" really doesn't work with a blastoise
