I think some of the edgiest moments in Pokemon are usually the serious battles that Ash go through such as Gym leaders, the Elite Four or even Rivals.

Game-wise, I think it was when Black and White were released. Anime-wise, it's Ash taking part in any major battle (Gym or League).
