How do you learn a new song?
Tab! Like 90% of the time I use tab because its just quicker and easier, but sometimes if I want a challenge or can't find a tab I'll learn it by ear. I never use sheet music though, I just find it annoying xD

As for the tab challenge thing, I suggest 2, 4, 6, 8 Motorway by Tom Robinson's Band. It's an easy song to play, but a very hard song to master. It'll be very interesting to see how different people play it :3

Welcome Alexandra, I shall put you in your proper place as a rock and roll legend!
Playing the guitar is awfully addicting isnt it!

I also prefer to learn my songs by tab as I'm not talented enough and to lazy to be able to learn by ear and when I look as sheet music my brain just says.. WTF?!?!

What is this Motorway Song and why do you like it so much?

Welcome Mr MusicNote! :):)
Derp guitar is very lovable isn't it?? (Maybe you should pair with a guitar)
Ugh I cant put a genre next to you as Acoustic stuff! Can you please be a bit more specific my friend.
Don't worry tabs is the way to go :P. Do you use guitarpro tabs or just text tabs?

Also any suggestion for tab of the month?

What guitar(s) do you have at the moment? What about amps/pickups/strings?

What guitar(s) do you have at the moment? What about amps/pickups/strings?

Amps: A Marshall MG100FX for live shows, which I absolutely adore <3 And a smaller practice amp that I used to have when I first started but I don't remember what that is :3
Guitars: I have 3 acoustics, all of which were gifts so I have no idea on models, but my favourite is a glossy black one with steel strings; it sounds like an acoustic dream <3 And electric wise I have the classic starter that everyone has, a couple others, and my favourite shining beauty an Ibanez SA260FM in Lavender <3

Challenge accepted. Although I do have a few assignments this week, so I might not have anything up until the weekend.

Oh, in terms of recording videos, what do other people use? My laptop's webcam is rubbish and I doubt my digicam is much better. For sound, I'm ordering EDIT: I've ordered an XLR-USB adapter and hooking up a Shure PG58. :D

Its quite easy to learn just a lil tricky to get the timing perfect so i think that makes for a perfect first challenge tab don't you?

As for recording, oh god. I'm not 100% sure if I'll record this but if I do I'll probably use a webcam/ handheld videocamera thingo if i do video and my little recording thingo thats name escapes me. (Its a boss recorder I believe, its handheld and small >.>)

I will NOT be posting my attempt first though! Its up to everyone else and I'll put mine up last haha!

I have a Roland Cube 15x practice amp and a 100 watt Fender Frontman212R for when i play with other people/ drummers xD.

Another metal head? Awww yeah \m/. What music did your band play?

Will you be attempting a cover of the tab of the month??

While on that topic I was thinking of making it Tab of the fortnight and change it every two weeks to encourage you all to play the guitar more and record yourselves for us all to see with the best cover going on the front page in the HALL OF FAME. We experimented with death metal, thrash metal, and black metal. I have vids of our show on youtube if you are interested in how we sound.

Most recent song I learnt was Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall - Coldplay. I'm not a huge fan of the song, but it's a lot of fun to play; I'd certainly suggest it! Plus its the only song I can think of that puts the D6/9 to good use *coughlearnfromthemU2cough*. Recently I also transposed the bass line of Muse's Hysteria on to 6-string; I know this isn't a hard song to play but it sure is fun when you get it to sound right.

Hmm, trying to learn Technical Difficulties by Racer X... but I'm having techinical difficulties with it.. (My fingers don't move that fast >.>)

And I learnt some you me at six songs before that. (Gone from incredibly easy it insane difficult, smart move Tom, smart move.)

And before them was I never told you what I did for a living by My chemical Romance. That song was a pain to learn at first. How do you guys practices songs? Do you learn like parts at a time and perfect them or learn it all at once?

Depends on the song. For fingepicked stuff, I usually learn the picking pattern and then the fretting movements. For simple chords or melodies, it's usually a learn-it-all-at-once affair. Then I relearn it a week later when I've inevitably forgotten it. Solos need to be broken down, because it's learning (and not improv) solos is not something I do often.

Thinking about buying a better acoustic....

CarefulWetPaint

Personally I learn the whole song straight up/ well play along a few times with the tab int TUX Guitar.
Then I'll go back and look at parts I had difficulty with then practice those till I have them down and keep doing that until the whole songs learnt :P. I don't finger pick much (kinda really bad at it), so don't know how I would learn a finger picked song.

Oh what kind of guitar were you thinking?

Jake♫
April 29th, 2012, 08:23 AM
I usually break down a song into it's components (Intro, Verse, Chorus, etc.) and learn them separately, then put it all together in the end.

Currently trying to learn Vultures by John Mayer. Love the sound of it and the main lick is amazing.

Well my USB-XLR cable turned up, but the recording is so damned quiet, there's no point recording. Contacting the seller to see if it's buggy, but otherwise I have nothing to record with. My built-in mics distort when the noise gets too loud.

Besides, I've had a few assignments to work on and haven't been disciplined enough to learn it. I hand in my current one on Wednesday, so let's see if I can learn it after that.

Also, I love DADGAD tuning. :D

Oh my god DADGAD tuning just sounds amazing when it's strummed openly, I love it. Bartender by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JphjsCqsZ4Q) is actually played in this tuning when it's just a solo person playing, it gives it such a full and rich sound it's wonderful. Maybe I'll put a recording of that up at some point when I have my guitar around =P

CarefulWetPaint

Drop C is probably one of my favourite tunings since most the songs I like to play are of this tuning. Drop D is what my other electric guitar is tuned to. (Mainly for Vicarious by TOOL.)

But the tuning of my acoustics, wooo they go all over the place, atm its just standard tuning for tab of the month and the classical guitars in like C G E G C c.

It's used a lot by the Civil Wars, one of my favourite duos. Worth a look if you like that spooky acoustic drone from the tuning.

If anyone remembers the main theme from the game Bastion, it's also used for that, despite what all of the tabs say.

It's used a lot by the Civil Wars, one of my favourite duos. Worth a look if you like that spooky acoustic drone from the tuning.

If anyone remembers the main theme from the game Bastion, it's also used for that, despite what all of the tabs say.

haha despite what all the tabs say? How do you know this my good man, have you tabbed it yourself? If so share with us your tab.

Which brings me to a question, has anyone here tabbed out a full song before for themselves? Have you submitted to a tab website? Has it had positive reviews?

Personally I've never tabbed out anything myself. Besides some original riffs and such so I didnt forget them.

This is a rad club! I'd like to join.

Username: Penatrait

Reason for joining: I've been playing guitar for close to seven years. I love playing in a band as lead or rhythm guitarist, and recent complications in the band may result in me trying my hand at bass guitar.

Preferred genre: Rock and Funk.

Also, I know I'm new, but what does everyone think about getting together for a collaboration? I noticed you guys record yourselves playing the Tab of the Week, which I was just gonna go ahead and try, but since we're all into recording we should try to write something together!

Oh, and as for how I learn a new song, I go for the tab always. Sometimes I'll try to figure it out by ear myself, but I'll most likely resort to ultimate-guitar.com. It's fun to see the similarities/differences between what I thought was played and what is actually played.

Welcome! Great to see you think the club is cool!

Well no ones actually decided to record themselves for tab of the month yet, you could be the first!

Tabs is how I go usually since my ear is pretty useless haha. And that site is what this clubs name pays homage to :)

-Important Note-
And I was honestly thinking of perhaps either opening another club for general musicians or opening this up to all instruments so we could get some collabs going because I also thought that'd be a really cool thing! Whats your thoughts? Keep this elitist and open up a general Musician club or open this up to all musicians?
Members what are your thoughts on this??

Well I think it's cool to have a little hub for us guitarists, but there should be an open musicians club as well. And if other people want to be elitists then they can open their own club for drummers or pianists or what have you...

Here's my recording of the tab of the month. It's not phenomenal or anything... I added a backing track to make it a little more listenable. And I think I tweaked the tab a little for ease of playing. Let me know what you think!

Oh cool! You may be the first hall of famer/first person to have their cover put on the front page, though I think you may have played it just a tad to slowly, but hey I can't judge I havent put a cover up yet and I'm very happy and impressed that you have. Thanks!

Also what program do you use for recording/editting?

Yes I'll probably just make a new club for musicians in general and keep this elitist (When I can get someone nice to do a good CSS for me >.>)
Would you considering joining a general music club as well?

Hmm you're right, the song does go pretty fast. I'll work on the speed. As for what I use, my school provided me with Pro Tools 8 LE. But you need hardware to run it which is expensive so I wouldn't recommend it to you haha. Before that I used Ableton Live.

I don't know if you've got a sort of pre-amp though. That helps a lot for recording, if you want to do it quietly but still get distortion. The best is to use a microphone on a real amp. Probably will need the pre-amp for the mic though lol. What do you use?

Yeah for sure! I'd love to get to know the musicians around PC.

Yeah its just a little bit faster then what you played but it doesnt take away from the fantastic effort you put in! Currently you will be the first hall of famer!

Whenever I have tried to record myself failing I have used Audacity and found it's pretty... average. But saying that it is a free program. What program does everyone else used? I would like to find a better one. xD
Also I have this little handheld recorder then which I use to record, it has mics and amp plugs so its pretty handy.. Though I havent really figured it out yet..

Also the discussion topic has been changed.

Thank you! I really appreciate it.

Audacity is actually really good considering it's a free program. You can do everything you need to do when it comes to basic recording, for people like you and me. For the longest time I had this Peavey microphone and it was super quiet and I couldn't believe how little I could get out of it and when I finally got my pre-amp audiobox, I could get a decent signal out of it. I still have yet to record myself playing my acoustic guitar, though. Which leads me to the new topic...

How many guitars do you currently have and how many have you owned all together? What is your favourite guitar you still own?
I have three. My first guitar, when I got started, was Squier Jagmaster. My guitar teacher said it was meant to be a cross between Fender's two guitars "Jaguar" and "Jazzmaster." I've never played a Jaguar but I have played a Jazzmaster and they're pretty neat. Second guitar I bought was an acoustic Takamine, which I haven't played in quite a while now... it's sitting in its case under my bed. Third guitar I bought was a Fender Stratocaster, and I loooove it! Some of my top favourite guitarists (John Frusciante, David Gilmour) a strat-players so I had to buy one.

I may take pictures later but I'm really lazy so don't expect me to lol

I currently own 4 guitars. I listed and took pictures of my two good ones in an earlier post (Ibanez acoustic and Gibson Les Paul), but I also have the first two guitars I owned. One is a piece of crap Lyon by Washburn acoustic guitar. The action is so high on it and the tone is just meh, but for a first guitar I guess it wasn't AWFUL. The other one is a Harmony electric that's pretty much just a cheap strat knock-off. Can't hold tune and is almost unplayable. I had fun when I first started learning =P

Okay I guess I should tell you guys about my fantastic guitars...

Okay my best(still horrible) guitar is aaaa *drum roll*
Yamaha Pacifica.
It's basically just a strat copy but it does have a nice fret board and fairly decent sound when you get down to it though the stock pick ups are pretty.. basicaverage
Moving onto my best(not that horrible) acoustic;
its a Cort AD-850.
It actually has a pretty nice tone for a cheapo guitar but doesnt have the best sustain or bridge, eh its still pretty good for how cheap it was ($300 AU).
Then my other two guitars are:
A Casino Custom Series thing that just a strat copy. pretty bad pick ups and tone pots etc BUT the action and setup is amazing!! (I Love itttt) I just borrowed this from a friend but Im pretty sure hes given it to me now :S
And a Martinez MC-SJ which is really bad. Its a classical guitar with nylon strings etc but its cant hold its tune horrible action etc etc. Kinda hate it tbh...

I'll Take photos of them later xD

@Pen
A real strato? Is it American Made? ifsoextremelyjealous. How much did something like that set you back? and I assumed you are totally in love with it without you having to say it.

I wanna get in on this conversation too lol
I have 5 electric guitars and 1 acoustic, and a bass.

B.C. Rich Warlock - my first professional guitar, it's got a great sound to it, considering the music I play, but I do need to change out the pickups soon.

Jackson Rhodes (Kinda) - It's a Jackson Rhodes V Shape, but it's a cheaper kind. Still Jackson, but no Floyd Rose tremolo and it has dots instead of that awesome triangle on the fretboard. Still sounds high quality to me considering what I paid for it.

Fernandes Revolver - I like to call this the "Black Cat" because it has a black cat inlay on the 12th fret. This one has a Floyd Rose tremolo too. The clean sounds clear and crisp, to me, and the distortion sounds alright but I wouldn't show it off lol

Gibson Les Paul Custom - Great vintage sound to it. Not entirely sure of the year, but I know it's in 2000 somewhere lol

Finally, my new baby the Deron Miller Parker Nitefly Custom - If you don't know who Deron Miller is, he was guitarist and vocalist for the band CKY and in a new band called World Under Blood. It's a nice sounding guitar both clean and distorted.

Fender Dreadnought - Can't remember the model number, but it's a cheapo one, still a great sound for $200 lol

Fender Precision Bass - I bought this from my friend, I don't play it that much, because I have no amp to play it on. So can't really tell too much about it, but when I do I will.

I'll post some pics later on too, whenever I get the chance.

I first learned how to play the guitar at the age of 7. I quickly learned different styles over the years, jazz, funk, etc. I also picked up bass, lead, and keyboards.

I can't really say what are my guitars, because they're custom made. I have three of them, one a strat, a superthin acoustic guitar, and a simple, classical guitar. :)

To be honest, I've gotten the Jackson, B.C. Rich, and Les Paul as birthday gifts. The bass ended up being $250 because my friend said it needed some maintenance. But the Fernandes and Parker were pretty expensive and I did have to save up money for those.

So far I've just been picking them myself but maybe the winner can choose the new tab of the month or something like that? But I think they should stay on theme songs atm as its fun and I already have one planned for next month. What do you guys think? Winners get to choose the next tab?

I'm not entirely sure of everyone's skill level here, so probably start off with the basics. How about an alternating pick exercise. Maybe something that can help with alternate picking up and down strings.

SKY: That was a nice track. It could be the mic that you recorded on, but it sounded like the one of the strings were a little out of tune, other than that though it was a nice relaxing piece.

So, I was wanting to customize a guitar. I'm wanting to use an Ibanez RG320 body with a Lefty Neck. I cannot find anyone who sells guitar parts at all, I checked at the official Ibanez site, but they do not have any Necks in stock. Anyone know of any dealers of guitar parts?

Welcome SeekerOfDarkness!
Yes what gutiars do you own! Pictures and descriptions of your babies pleaseee <3.

Thanks! Well, don't get too excited guys, cuz my guitars aren't all that impressive XD. My first and favorite guitar is a Yamaha C45M with steel strings instead of nylon. I've had this baby for as long as I can remember, and while it's still only a cheap classical guitar, it's part of my family. Sadly, though, I don't have a picture of it. I also have a Fender Squier Strat that I got on sale. I often consider this one a total waste of cash, mostly because it doesn't work half the time. There's something screwed up inside the guitar, so sound doesn't always come out of the amp. I'm hopefully gonna get it replaced soon, though. I don't have a picture of this one either. Sorry!

Also, concerning the tab... I've put the notes into Guitar Pro, and they sound right, but I'm not sure what the rythym is supposed to be (or time sig for that matter). Could you help a guy out?

That's weird that it's not workin. I've tried to add a different URL to the same video, but it hasn't worked.

As for the topic, I'd probably have to say that, all though I don't have a favorite, Brendon Small is definitely up there. He's a great guitarist, and he made Metalocalypse, so you know he's awesome. Not only can he do sick solos, but he can also create songs with great chord progressions and rhythms that work well and are very metal.

Freddy Fazbear
June 23rd, 2012, 12:44 PM
Sorry, I've been really super busy lately, so I couldn't get a cover up. I'll try for the Pirates, but I still don't know if I'll be able to. Gonna be gone for two weeks, and I'm trying to learn a couple of songs to preform at a camp I'm going to in a few weeks. Yay showing off.

Anyways, my favorite guitarist? Easy. Mikael Akerdfelt of Opeth. He practically single-handedly inspired me to play guitar, especially metal. And not only that, but I'm pretty sure Brendon Small used Mikael as an inspiration for one of the fictional members of Dethklok (not sure which one, I don't really watch Metalocalypse). So yeah.

My Favourite Guitarist:

I have a few but the winner has to be Dan Donegan from Disturbed. He is basically the reason I play guitar and I have so much respect for him. He can play simple chord progressions like its all he's done his whole life then bust into a crazy face melting riff like nothing happened and to top it off producers INCREDIBLE solo's that add to the songs and arent just shredding or showing off. In my opinion a fantastic guitarist in every aspect.

It's a show, on Adult Swim, about "the biggest band in the world" names Dethklok. The creator, Brendon Small, created the songs on the show and is actually in the live Dethklok band, be plays guitar and he does vocals. They are a melodic death metal band, and all their fans are crazy for them. Each episode is pretty much what goes on in their daily lives, and in every episode at least one person dies. It's a pretty funny show with a LOT of gore.

Oh thats really cool! I might have to catch it one day, see if its as good as it sounds!

So what songs have everyone been learning lately? I just finished learning most of God Knows By Aya Hirano, and I was thinking of re-learning some songs I have forgotten like Focus shift By Dark Tranquility and tuning my guitars down uber lower for some Parkway Drive songs.

Hahaha, I watched a few episodes of Metalocalypse back in the day. I wasn't huge into it but I loved the concept.

Anyways, how's everyone been doing. My drummer went to Scotland so we haven't practiced in a little while. We decided to tackle Muse's Stockholm Syndrome - an incredibly simple tabbing, but repetitive and fast as hell. My wrist is going to swell, but it'll be awesome! We're gonna be playing a gig downtown in my city, should be awesome.

Here's our setlist:
Purple Haze (Jimi)
Purple Stain (RHCP)
"Nothing is True" an original
Don't Forget Me (RHCP)
Karma Police
"Everything is Permitted" the second part to our original
Stockholm Syndrome
Crying Lightning (arctic monkeys)

Well, I learn songs pretty quickly nowadays, but maybe that's cuz I've been doing a lot of rythym work, so there's not too much to learn. But anmyways, here's the songs I've been learning for the past... while.

Harvest - Opeth
Good Riddance - Green Day
Waiting on the World to Change - John Mayer
The Pokemon Theme Song - Ray Parker, Jr.
Gold on the Ceiling - The Black Keys
Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Metallica
One - Metallica
Fade to Black - Metallica
To Bid You Farewell - Opeth
Holiday - Green Day
Hey Soul Sister - Train

And... Well, I'm not proud of it, but I had to learn it for an upcoming concert: Born This Way - Lady Gaga

I know. Kinda all over the place.

When it comes to acoustic, how do you feel when the guitarist is most talented?

I personally think that when someone can play and sing in different rhythms is more talented than someone who plays eighth notes and sings.

Anyone who can play the guitar like that and sing is extremely talented in my books. Newton Faulkner is another good example of what I think is extreme talent on an acoustic guitar.

Also is anyone thinking of tackling this months tab? Its the pirate of the Caribbean theme song!

So how many people are self taught guitarist or have teachers? And does anyone watch instructional videos to help their playing?

Reason for joining: Guitar is my life!
What is your preferred genre to play in: Heavy metal, hard rock, blues, classical

I don't really know much about acoustic guitars, but I believe that the hardest music you can play on them is Spanish flamenco music. So if one is able to play that, I consider them very talented.
Oh yeah, my favorite guitarist is Randy Rhoads. His music is very... well, I lack the words to describe it. The way he infused classical elements into heavy metal is just amazing!

And does anyone watch instructional videos to help their playing?
I do. There's a company called Licklibrary who sell instructional DVD's - their instructors are very talented guitarists, they teach everything note by note. Learning by watching them is a lot easier than learning with tabs. Also, they teach everything exactly how it was originally played in the studio. Tabs usually have some mistakes in them.

How long have you been playing the guitar for if its your whole life? Also yay for metal \m/.
Flamenco is pretty amazing I have to agree with you there.

Oh that's interesting! Do they make good instructional videos? How much do they cost? And what kind of songs and such do they teach?

Thanks guys for the welcome :) I really appreciate it.
I've been playing for only 2 & a half years, but that's because I lacked the equipment but I've always wanted to learn how to play.

One DVD by Licklibrary costs about $25, and they teach anything you can imagine. Not only do they teach songs, but they also teach you how to play in the style of some famous guitarist - Malmsteen, Rhoads, Blackmore, Synyster Gates, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai and many many others.

Oh thats really cool! Is that how you have learnt how to play the guitar? Do they do like personalized lesson's if you request like a song or two? That'd be really cool. It seems like a really good idea indeed, and really sounsd like it'd help with learning guitar but how many songs/lessons are on one DVD?

Also what kind of guitar do you own?

LightningAlex
July 18th, 2012, 02:18 AM
Licklibrary isn't how I've learned to play the guitar, although they do have the ultimate beginner's DVD. Sadly, they don't do personal requests. They have a forum on their website with a "Suggestion" section, though. They do either 5 or 7 songs per DVD. They have a lot of trailers for their DVD's on YouTube, so check them out.

As for the guitar I own, it's, well, a very cheap copy of a fender strat. When played, it sounds like a malfunctioning ambulance... and it has only 21 frets! But I'll get a new one in 2 months or so...

Just looked at Scratch. That's ridiculous. I wish I could play like that. If you like that percussive style, John Butler and Newton Faulkner are worth checking out.

I tend to play with my fingers. I'm nothing special, but I tend to play almost everything with my fingers. Unless it's all strumming, then I use a pick to save wearing out my fingernails. Or it it's heavily muted, because of the angle you have to hold your hand.

I've just found that playing everything in Full-step-down makes it SOO much easier to sing along.

Oh howd you learn then Alex? Are you self taught or do you have a teacher that helps you out? Also don't worry my guitars are cheap ones as well and only have 21 frets.
I do like John Butler, being Australian and all I've listened to his music a lot and watched him live a couple of times.

Personally I rarely play with my fingers as Im just not that good at finger picking and much prefer using a pick, plus a pick suits my style better. What thickness of picks do you guys prefer?

Why does it make it easier? Is your voice suited to lower keys or..?

Also recently my guitars bridge popped out heaps. Anyone know what this happened? I have a feeling the strings somehow got incredibly tight as it happened on the guitar that I keep in standard tuning but I have no idea how. The bridge was pulled out about 2 cm's which was rather odd. Does anyone have any idea how this could have happened? Its the standard kind of low end whammy bridge if that helps any.

pmarckoue
July 18th, 2012, 09:21 PM
I like to play with a 1.5 - 2mm pick. The largest my strings are now are on the Parker and those are 11s. I like a nice attack sound on the strings, but not too harsh because I'd like to solo as well. That's why that size is usually good for me.

Sound like a Floyd Rose bridge. If it is, those things are REALLY annoying to fix. Did it just pop out randomly? Or did you tighten the strings, because that's usually what causes those bridges to pull up.

CarefulWetPaint
July 19th, 2012, 04:44 AM
It just popped out randomly I didnt tighten the strings or anything before it happened. Just :( I wonder what happened? Maybe changing temperatures made the strings contract? Anyone know if that could happen?

pmarckoue
July 19th, 2012, 07:20 AM
Humidity will affect the tuning of the guitar, but only so slightly to make your guitar a little flat. Unless you're in an extremely high temp. I don't think it will cause your bridge to pop out. It could be the spring holding the bridge down. Does the bridge go down when you tune down your strings? If not, that'd be really weird.

LightningAlex
July 19th, 2012, 01:23 PM
Oh howd you learn then Alex? Are you self taught or do you have a teacher that helps you out?
Sorry I haven't replied earlier, I didn't see the post :\ Yeah, I had a teacher for the first 3 months, who just taught me the basics. The rest I learned by myself.

And I'm sorry, but I can't really help you with the bridge.

Also, I have a question for all of you - which scales do you usually use when improvising a solo? When I learn a song with a really hard solo, I usually improvise it while playing the song, before I practice the actual solo out in full speed. When improvising, I usually use the pentatonic scale, blues scale, natural minor scale (Also called aeolian) and arpeggios.

CarefulWetPaint
July 21st, 2012, 08:56 PM
Yeah its really weird, I didnt think humidity would change it as much as it was changed so that confused me even more! Ugh Ill just ignore it a put new strings on her and hope for the best.
The bridge went back down when the strings snapped and I loosened them. It was really weird, I should have checked the tuning before doing that to see if they had tightened heaps.

Oh I don't really improvise solo's that much, I'm not very good so I just play around the area that it sounds the actual solo is coming from with a rather unorthodox approach in an attempt to kinda mimic the sound I hear. Im such an awful player :'(

LightningAlex
July 22nd, 2012, 02:17 AM
Well I don't think you should say that about yourself. If you're, however, not satisfied yourself with your skills, how about you start learning a few easy solos? The Pirate of the Caribbean theme isn't hard at all (Tab of the month currently), so that's a good start.

CarefulWetPaint
August 2nd, 2012, 01:35 AM
Well I'll learn Pirates over the weekend and put up a cover but is anyone interested in doing it or should I change the tab now?

And I don't have trouble learning solo's I just have trouble improvising them :P If I have notes to follow its much much easier for me then making it up as I go. :S

New Topic time as well!

What is your most embarrassing moment relating to guitar playing? (Example would be perhaps messing up a live performance or a string snapping at a live performance etc.)

I think the only thing that was bad was when I was off beat during the chorus, I was singing at the same time as well, so it was a little weird and I had to end it early. But that was pretty much it.

LightningAlex
August 7th, 2012, 12:30 AM
I had a really embarrassing moment while playing the guitar:
I performed a song with the school band, and right before the performance, our vocalists tells us to play the second chorus twice. And I asked her a million times if she's sure about that, she'd always reply with "Yes, play the second chorus twice". There's a solo right after the second chorus. So we come to the second chorus, I played it once, and, of course, instead of playing the solo, I started playing the second chorus a second time... but our vocalist FORGOT that she wants to sing the second chorus twice. The drum and bass is same in the chorus and the solo that follows afterwards, so basically it looked like I forgot to play the solo...

Lol what? I dont understand.. Is he comparing dubstep to metal? Teh hell? Sure they are two of my favourite genres but they are not the same! I guess they are both heavier versions of the genre's but still..

Though I guess if you look at metal in comparison to rock and dubstep in comparison to say electro dance I guess I can kinda understand this..

What do you guys think of this?

pmarckoue
August 9th, 2012, 04:25 PM
I personally am not a fan of dubstep. I don't like how overrated it is, I'm sure I'd like it after the craze dies down. But until then, no dubstep for me. Now, with my thoughts on this article. There was an article earlier in the year, with koRn, and Davis had stated "We were dubstep before dubstep," which they were not. From that article his views on the genre was pretty much, "electronic music with a lot of bass," which it is not. Based on that article itself, I think that Davis is just jumping on the dubstep bandwagon. They were ok in the 90s, and I believe that they should just let it be that way and let it just be nostalgic. Since then, you don't hear about them that much, so (what I take from this whole thing) they want attention, so they just take what's popular and try to go with it.

With the comparison between dubstep and metal, there is no comparison. Metal has lyrics that having specific meanings (i.e. telling stories, showing emotion, artistic poetry, just for fun, etc.) where Dubstep does not contain lyrics, for the most part. Most metal riffs are based on classical and blues genres, where dubstep is just a bunch of LFOs clouding over a hip/hop beat.

Those are my opinions on this whole thing.

While we are on the topic I shall add a new discussion!

What do you think about guitarists exploring other genres with their guitars now, like some playing like electronic or dubstep or a genre where you wouldnt expect a guitar to be really used?
