View Full Version : New Users Suggestion

This will probably make a few people angry, but I thought I'd suggest it anyways. ^_^
I suggest turning post counts off in Newbies, or enforce a "No copy/paste" rule, because that's what a lot of people do. It's the same welcoming for every newbie... barely anything personal. :X
So yeah, thought I'd suggest that, because it's kinda annoying... and more of a "Let's get post count up! Post in Newbies!" forum than anything else.
Proof!

I actually like this idea!!! This will prevent people from just posting in there for more posts.

I agree on the 2nd part, but when it's the same one that welcomed 20 other people... what good is it?
Edit: You took it out. o_o

Yes you are right.I know a member (whose name will not be said) who has posted the same welcomeing post everytime. So you are right Jkaizer. But i don't think the mods will like this thread.

January 19th, 2005, 11:16 PM
*shrugs* I thought I'd suggest it. And it's happened to some threads... so why not suggest it fro the full forum?

You do got a point there.Welcoming the person is the main point of the thread. But not a lot of people do it for post count.

Eh, I think quite a few people do actually.
If they wouldn't, why can't they post an original welcome message?

Eh..I like it.A good friend likes to post in welcome...and has gotton over 500 posts doing it.

Which shouldn't be the reason he's posting in there. --;

I think so too ,that's why I said not a lot but I meant some.

*confused* So do you agree with the idea or not...?

I do agree 100%. I just said I think few do post for the count, but most means to welcome.Sorry if you're confused.

Lets just put it this way.I don't care if posts count there or not.I think all posts should be turned off then no one would go crazy about losing posts or worried about racking them up.

I sort of agree about the post count idea, but not all so about the copy and paste rule. I mean, people should try to make their messages different every time, but does it really matter what people post to welcome a newbie (except if its flaming, spamming, .etc.)? Woof~

I like to have the basic count there, it's nice to see how much time I've spent here. :P
Edit: The Copy/Paste rule is an alternative to the Post Counts Off. Because copy/pasting = spamming in my mind. Moreso than the threads kicked from OC to Funtime.

I think there may be a poll on this.

Greg has a point there. From what ive seen, many people post there with same posts just to gain posts counts.

You can't actually go ahead and pre judge a person like that. I mean unless -every- post they have in that ever is the same, then there's no way of knowing if they are trying to be nice or not.
But I say it might be worth it actually.

Im all for the shutting off of posts in there.Once we get an admins view we'll know.

Meh...after looking closer I say we keep em'. If someone just post for post, so what? Like you people say it's only a number, so why is it a big deal? If they get spammy I'll correct them myself.

Nice to know we have an awesome Newbies mod ^^.Hey whatever floats your boat lol.

I'm just saying people will get really mad at it, and bring up the same argument I just did ^^; So I'll just keep a closer eye on the place.

Well -- What are we Going to Do with Post Counts. We dont Judge a member By His or Her Post Counts only the Quality of the Posts.BTW This IDea is good too.

Yes it is a good idea. It could be turned off. But its up to the admins.

Yeah, that way Alex and I dont have to look at our low post counts! XD

January 20th, 2005, 02:21 AM
Well switching to this meant losing all that rep and posts, but who cares I like my new name. Plus people can confuse us, me and David. lol
Anyways quality is always better over quantity. tahst what we all say :D
I think? But as Jorge said also, some members may get mad and all if it is truned off.

Alex, fix your sig. It's too big.

I think no posts would be a bad idea.
1: Is there a need to turn it off? Just because some one welcomes a member saying the same thing dosen't matter to the one getting the welcome. So what if they are only doing it for posts? Turn off the posts and they will stop, not as many new members gets welcomes and they won't feel more like a home forum.
2: That is 25,850 posts gone when the stats are recounted. Lots of questions will come up and stuff about them lost posts (just remember what happened to Piro). And lots of questions will come up when members post and they go "I posted but my post count didn't go any higher".
3: Turning off all the posts in the forum just because of a few members isn't such a good idea.
3: PC just isn't about posts. If it was then how come all the forums wasn't turned off on posts? Every time you turn off posts and stuff you take a little away from PC. We won't turn off every forum's post just because some one thinks it's "spammy".
I don't see any reason on why to turn them off, I see it doing more harm then good.
And if stuff gets spammy you can get Blue.

Big? Oh well *goes off to resize*
Anyways yeah people will get mad.

*would like an admin opinion before this is closed btw*
You'll never have the chance! *closes*
:P
Just kidding, I think turning off post count in that forum is a good idea though, but I don't think it should be the first attempt to fix the problem. I think putting a warning out first is better, and if the problem persists, then it should be turned off. Just my two cents though.

I really don't see any reason fort this, if you have a problem with people doing this...Then just PM me there names and where they made what seemed like a copy/paste post. Since that seems to be your only gripe about the whole thing, and so what either way? It's not really hurting anyone, and like -many- members say 'it's only a number'

Well, even though the final word has been said, I'll put this in. There's not much to say in New Users/Welcome other than welcoming the person, and naturally, most people are too lazy to make a different response each and every time. So... yeah. o.<
It's not only that forum where it occurs. People often say stuff such as, "This thread should be closed," rather than just reporting the thread and leaving. Seems like more postcount to me...

I'm pretty neutral. In my opinion, as long as there are people welcoming the new members and making them feel at home and as if people care that they are here then it's all good, even if they are (for crazy reasons) doing it for post count.
Unfortunately a lot of members do care a lot about post count, and i worry that if it is turned off that many will stop from welcoming the new members.
Personally, i do tend to write the same content in each of my welcomes since i have yet to get to know the new members on a personal level, and just for equal treatment in the welcomes.

I think this is a good idea actually, but I don't know if the implication would be good....
When I first came I use to welcome many members because I had nothing else to discuss (xD)
But now I go there rarely, even if I should go there and welcome more often *slaps himself*
I wouldn't really know what should be better.... Leaving the postcount on would incentive people to welcome, but it could not be a genuine welcome so there is no point on it.
However, taking it off might stop many people from welcoming new members, but at the same time the welcome messages would be genuine, and not to raise postcounts....
Meh... I am neutral on this o.O'

If you welcome a lot of members then it becomes real hard to come up with something new. I know because I used to welcome every member (and I mean every single new member that posted in that forum). I would have changed what I was saying a little each time and I had 3-5 different quote "Welcome to PC ..., I hope you like it here" "Welcome ... I hope you have fun here and like it around here". And mostly the only thing I could do is add their name. I didn't do it for post count, I did it to make the member feel welcome. Lots of members make the same posts over and over again. But at least they make the new member feel welcome to PC. And that's what we want (not to care about post counts left and right).

Sometimes I copy&paste when I am welcoming new members, but not for post count, there's just not really much to say unless you actually know the person

If people truly are just doing it for post count, why not just turn it off in that forum, like FTiP?

Welcoming every member? Wow! I dont even wleocme myself, well I only visit there around once every two weeks for like three posts or so, but when i posts I always change it and never say the same.
Turning it off... well... isn't that place also where most newbies gain their first posts?

If people care about there post count that much then let them have it.It's not hurting anyone.
I mean I welcome a member here and there.

Greg, post counts are not going anywhere. It's not hurting anyone, and no one has actually PMed me, the MOD of that area with any complaints. And I am there a lot, I don't see anyone getting mad or annoyed at people doing this. Like Andy said, you can only come up with some many ways to say 'hello' that after a while it -will- sound like copy/paste no matter what.
Honestly, do you see people besides yourself complaining? I've never seen a new user complain of a post that looks like another one, have you? No. So as I see it, there is no problem. You're turning what people do to try and be nice into something else, so just drop it already.

Geez. Is it just me, or are you guys taking this way too personally? I don't see why you're acting as if he truly offended you, since he was just making a suggestion.
Anyways, I wouldn't mind if post count was gone in the newbie lounge, but people might stop posting as much in that forum (even though you do have a point about FTiP). Also, if Blue says that it isn't really spammy in there, then I don't see what this will accomplish. It was nice of you to show concern for the forum, though. =)

This thread makes me ashamed to be on this staff. It was just a suggestion. Why we all couldn’t calmly discuss it, without pulling external matters in is beyond me. This thread is about new users, not ranks.
JK, why don’t you make a new thread about it, and we’ll just roll through it one idea at a time, no multiquotes? I think it kinda works best that way.
