This is more then likely the PS4! Last time something like this happened, we got the vita.

Is it? I remember them recently saying that they were going to wait for the Xbox for announcing the PS4. And more on that, if they were to announce it, wouldn't they do it at E3, so as not to piss investors off?

I'm not saying it's unlikely, but I'm not sure it's the PS4.

I'm not sure it is the PS4 too...no one really knows...maybe they're making an fusion between XBOX and Playstation? Sony and Windows? Working together...? Who knows...

Dear God, don't say that. Then we'd have to pay some subscription to do pretty much everything other than play games (but we'd have to pay for online), and they'd probably ax the Playstation Plus program, and that would be bad, bad, BAD. I'd much sooner want to see Wiistation 4U than Playbox (or Playstation X), and that'd never happen. Well, unless another company rose up, but I don't see that happening until one of the current companies dies out or is forced into a merger/out of the console biz.

Well investor's are invited as well besides the media, and its a few days before Destination Playstation, which is a basically a 3 day investor's meeting. And while they said that they prefer MS to go first, who knows what that could mean.

Hirai said that it would make it easy for them to one-up the others in terms of specs. It may not be completely true, but it makes sense.

Well, regardless of what they said, we'll see.

But it could happen...what if they work together for one console? A brand new console? Well...I saw this "trailer" and I can say they aren't working with Windows...guess it's gonna be another console Sony's releasing...a brand new console...yeah.

I doubt they'd do any sort of merger. Microsoft and Sony have very different ideals and different practices. That, and Sony and Microsoft are both part of larger companies: Sony and Microsoft; they always their other products (such as Microsoft selling Windows and Windows software, and Sony selling an assortment of items) to supplement them, so even if their gaming branches went under, they'd have no reason panic. That's why a MicroSony system would be so unbelievable: the Xbox and Playstation are just relatively small pieces of a much larger company.

Now, they could have some sort of business agreement, but that would show vulnerability in the companies at large, and that would be a VERY bad thing for those companies, as other companies would take the opportunity and announce new products, offer better deals, and steal investors, among other things. So it really wouldn't be in either of their best interests to do so.

It would be strange for Sony to announce the PS4 considering that, if I remember, they wanted Microsoft to make the first move. I'm kind of concerned that it's not the PS4.

Zet

Won't be the PS4. Sony has announced that they're waiting for Microsoft to make their move with the next xbox first.

I hope this announcement will be about that they're going to improve the OS for the PS3 and Vita.

Nintendo's already gotten their next generation console out, so it's a matter of time before Sony and Xbox does.

That being said, I've heard the rumors where Sony said they'd let Microsoft make the first move. So this most likely won't be it, but it'll probably be something big. And on the off chance that it is PS4, then I think it's a smart move. Imo, the person who makes the first move has the advantage. Strictly between Sony and Microsoft, by the way.

Why are you excluding Nintendo?

Evil Stud Muffin
February 1st, 2013, 03:23 PM
I dunno why Bloodex excluded them, but the situation with Nintendo is basically let them do their own thing, they're successful at it. Nintendo will never win the "core" as long as games "journalism, MS and Sony exist. They would need a more powerful console, a lot of moneyhatting, and some divine act of god. And for me I'm fine with it, the less hardware parity there is, the better.

machomuu
February 1st, 2013, 03:40 PM
Makes sense. Nintendo's never really been one to worry about what Microsoft and Sony are doing mainly because they have a handle on the Casual, Retro, Niche, and "Enthusiast" gamer markets...there's really no reason for them too compete; what they've been doing has been working so far.

Honest

Elendil said it for me, in regards to why I excluded Nintendo. They've always been more casual.

February 16th, 2013, 11:26 AM
So, seeing how this is getting closer and closer, lets review what's been said about the PS4, which is likely the reveal for next week! We know its gonna be super powerful, somewhere around 4 gigs of GDDR5 with .5gb allocated for the OS, and the GPU is based on the Southern Islands architecture, but the higher end. DX11+ features included, with an emphasis likely on particle effects and better physics, with the obvious boost in texture resolution. 4 core processor, running at 1.8 teraflops and 800 mhz. That combined with the GDDR5 is gonna make it quite a beast, possible even more then Durango if rumors are true.
Continuing on, recently the controller for the devkit has been revealed, which is looking like a near-final design, with obvious changes to come:
https://securecdn.disqus.com/uploads/mediaembed/images/434/1840/original.jpg
Bumped contrast for those to see it if its too dark:(thanks to a member called Punkster on NeoGaf)
http://i.imgur.com/m61ZDgV.jpg
For those that do not know, that's a touchpad in the middle, not a screen. Why its glass we have no idea. As for that bit on top, the controller likely has move like controls built in, for the new eyetoy to track. Pretty sweet design to boot as well, with a glossy finish to blend in with the glass touchpad, and the handles are probably wider then the DS3s.

So how do we know its the PS4 being revealed you might say. Well, we don't. However, many of the industry insiders have confirmed it, and even MS basically said flat out, Sony don't botch this or you're screwed. Also...
http://blog.us.playstation.com/
First post is a Playstation news story. They're likely gonna post an evolution video every two days, PS2 tomorrow, PS3 on the 18th, with the Ps4 unveil on the 20th.
Also, I know I said in the DCC I'm likely not going to get a future console as they do not appeal much, and they look to be going in a place where I don't want video games to go, but something tells me Sony's gonna do something right. It just feels like it, you know? We might be wrong and Microsoft might be the one in the end, but their focus on multimedia is not exactly the most promising outlooks on their future consoles. Lets get hyped!

Brendino
February 20th, 2013, 12:57 AM
Whatever it is that we're getting today, I'm looking forward to hearing about it (as long as it wasn't all some sort of marketing ploy to unveil the PS3 Ultra Slim or something). Honestly, though, I don't see how it could be anything but the PS4, especially with all signs pointing towards it.

On another interesting note, though, PSN decided to give away $10 vouchers to a number of customers starting today, including myself, my cousin and a few others that I know. I can't help but wonder why they would do this all of a sudden. Maybe it's another thank you for sticking around, or maybe it's something to soften the blow for a disappointing announcement. Either way, I guess we'll find out exactly what it is as the day goes on.

February 20th, 2013, 03:08 PM

Holy Balls, 2+ hours of what the PS4 can do, its a motherload splurge of info. 0_0
E3 this year is gonna be mad crazy, just games all over the place, no need for info on the console.

machomuu
February 20th, 2013, 03:19 PM
8 Gigs of memory, huh? That'll definitely last them the entire generation. I'm also glad their using a local HD

And the controller is rather pretty, and it's quite interesting. As well as the Stereobar. I'm glad they are trying to innovate in terms of unique hardware features, it gives us a reason to not just go "Wii U and PC".

Evil Stud Muffin
February 20th, 2013, 03:23 PM
Yep, Wii U, PS4, and PC is looking mighty tempting at this point, Sony is bringing the goods. MS better not be this good, cause that would mean I would be fussing over which current gen console to buy for the first time in ages. The controller being share and options is crazy though, its really shaking things up, and making Nintendo looking a bit outdated for having them. But hey, diversity is a cool thing, power to Sony for all I care.

Knack looks pretty cool, the artstyle is interesting to say the least. No jaggies is what's throwing me off though, I'm not sure if its a cutscene or real time.

WOW. All that extra ram? Game restore points, downloading games while you play others, and even playing games while your downloading. Multitasking up the wazoo and I love it. I am also an OS slave a dirty dirty os slave, and I would buy the console just for that OS. Good god is that clean and minimal.

Honest
February 20th, 2013, 03:30 PM
Interesting, I stand corrected. A good show, but I don't know if the PS4 has a key hook that'll make me get it. Maybe I'm annoyed that I barely had my PS3 for a month. Still, not a bad showing. How long is this thing, though?

8 GB of memory? I missed that, wow, that's pretty good.

machomuu
February 20th, 2013, 03:31 PM
Holy- ALADDIN? This may not be that related, but that game was a big part of my childhood! I used to play that game on my Gameboy all the time! It was a great way to spend a Sunday at Church.

So yeah, I like this guy.

EDIT: I'm not sure...but I think it's...2 hours?

Evil Stud Muffin
February 20th, 2013, 03:32 PM
Couple of hours, 2 if not more. They're going all out on details for it, so yeah. Perhaps the console itself would be fore E3, as we haven't seen it yet.

Gakai is super interesting, even if we knew it was coming. That controller though, man it looks like its half matte half shiny plastic. Love the look to it, its different enough but still a dualshock.

Honest
February 20th, 2013, 03:35 PM

Also, I'm interested in what they meant about PS1, 2, and 3. Specifically 2. I wonder if this means something in terms of backwards Compatability.

EDIT: Ah. Hm, I guess those buttons won't be a problem, then.

Evil Stud Muffin

Unfortunately I can't watch a live stream of the press conference right now, but I love what I've heard of it so far through live updates. You won't need to, the Wii U's graphics will be at least twice as good as they are now by the end of its life, especially games that run under the Unreal Engine.

EDIT:This is Killzone: Shadows...something.

Evil Stud Muffin
February 20th, 2013, 03:54 PM
Killzone, and those are the Helghast. Love their new look. I got to say, while the environment doesn't look too much of a leap as well as the character models being pretty good, the really noticeable bump is all the particle effects and physics going around. The jump from PS3 to PS4 will be visible in that department in the beginning, but I expect the environment to look amazing a couple of years in.

To be honest, what I meant was that the Wii U while it will turn out stunning will still be a bit outdated. I can see the console getting launch window PS4 graphics at the later stretches, but that's it.

What? The only indie game dev I know that has openly criticized Japanese games is that idiot Phil Fish. And screw him. Fez was just a ripoff of Super Paper Mario, some flash games, and Cave Story, he's really got no room to be calling other peoples' works stale.

Agreed, but the Braid creator said something about them as well. It wasn't meant as an insult, though, what he said; rather, he was often talking about how long Japanese games often are and how they "don't respect the player's time", what with their save spots and length, saying that Braid did what they didn't in that respect (which, really was a given, given that it is a modern platformer). The problem with this statement is that in past years (I'd say the last decade, maybe the last two) Japanese games have been a lot shorter and focused and have given the player a lot more leniency in how long they want the game to be.

I don't have the statement on hand, but it should be relatively easy to find. It was in the E3 issue of GI, though he said it a while before that.

Also, this Media Molecule game seems interesting, I'm interested to see what people do with it.

Destiny is the type of game that I've always hoped would revolutionize the FPS industry. I'd love to see more FPS try to integrate online play with a story or main game setting, or put more emphasis on the main/story mode. So I'm hoping this game does well.

Overall, it was a good presentation. While I won't be buying it day one, and I still won't be buying it until some exclusive comes a long that practically forces me to buy it (which'll probably be Persona 5), it was nice and actually gave me a reason to look at it as a viable console in the console race.

Knack and Drive Club.

...I think those were the only exclusives mentioned. Quantic Dreams talked about some games that may be exclusive, but I'm not completely sure about those. Also, I think the Braid creator is making a PS3-only game, but again, I'm not completely sure.

Well, while the rest of the Internet (or at least those of us who care about videogames) fanboyed/fangirled over the now-revealed PlayStation 4 yesterday, I was doing grueling, time-consuming homework... :P

........

T_T LOL; I got reminded about this big announcement earlier, and then when IGN was down/not working properly for a while yesterday, I was like, "Orite; that PlayStation thing is today...", which I'm guessing could've been a factor.

I anticipate what the cost will be; you'd think it would be more than what the original-model PlayStation 3 retailed for...but I guess Sony seems to be a bit more knowledgeable about the consumer crunch nowadays (http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/21/sony-flexible-on-playstation-4-cost)...

I'm glad that the "blocks used games" feature stayed a rumor, because I'm pretty sure such a lock-out would've been disastrous for Sony, seeing how many people depend on used games to engage in the videogame industry (I would definitely have been disappointed, as most of my first games ever were used). Time will tell what Microsoft will do for their next console, be it "XBox 720" or something else entirely...

The DualShock 4 controller for PS4 looks a little weird to me... I hope it's as ergonomic as the DualShock 3; even I have to admit that the DualShock 3 feels wonderful as a gaming controller. :3

It totally sucks that PS4 isn't natively compatible with PS3 (http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/21/playstation-4-not-backwards-compatible-with-retail-or-digital-games)...at least emulation and cloud services are options, but it doesn't feel right coming off the heels of what happened with PS3 and backwards compatibility... Yeah, they're moving to new technology with PS4, but no backwards compatibility is still a shame... I'm grateful that Nintendo has an excellent track record in that department regarding most of their consoles..

...Good Job Sony. *facepalm*

:cer_laugh: That picture had me laughing so much...

Oh god, wait, did they say you can play PS4 games on the Vita? That's gonna boost Vita sales triple fold if it's true.

That would be quite the intriguing feature... :o

I'm honestly not too keen on the PS4 from what we saw of it at the announcement. The whole social aspect doesn't appeal to me at all - I want a certain amount of privacy with my online gaming, and I don't want all my offline friends knowing every move I make when playing games either. And it's pretty clear that Vita has been relegated to PS4 accessory/Wii U knockoff...which is sad, since I love my Vita and wish Sony would give it some love. It has so much potential.

Other than that, the graphics only look marginally better than the PS3, and it looks like next gen is going to just be the same old crap from this gen - by-the-numbers sequels and 90% generic shooters.

Basically everything Morkula said.

I really don't understand the appeal of the social aspect. I like waking up early on a Saturday, turning on a game, and just zoning out. Why do I need to announce that to the world. ...ignoring that I just did.

Still looking forward to more details on the console itself, but a lot of the games that were showcased at the conference look really interesting, haha.

Going back and looking at some of the features that were revealed, I'm still excited about the live streaming of gameplay and being able to play games as their still downloading, but am disappointed at the lack of backwards compatibility, and like a few others have said, the whole social gaming aspect does seem a bit excessive. If the rumors are true that we have to be connected to the internet all the time when we play games, I think there'll be a lot of unhappy people (myself included). I'm also not quite sure how I feel about the touchpad on the controller, as I found it a little distracting when I accidentally pressed it when I tried the Vita.

All in all, I'll wait until we hear more info about the console (and actually see it), but I doubt it'll be something I pick up on day one. I have a feeling that it will slightly outperform the new XBox spec-wise, but I'd still rather wait until they're both out for a few months before I jump on either bandwagon.
