View Full Version : Rate the Video Game Music Above You
March 15th, 2013, 03:15 PM
Inspired by the thread over in General Entertainment Rate the anime theme above you (http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=288586). In this thread you rate the video game music in the post above, depending on how you like it. Whether you rate it with a scale of 1 to 10 or just write a nice, lengthy impression or whatever is up to you, as long as it encourages discussion of the music from the medium.
You also have to post your own video game music after you're done rating the last one.
Note: Try to avoid posting Pokemon music if you can. Seeing as this is a Pokemon forum, there's a chance this thread might end up being dominated with Pokemon music (because they're fantastic, really), so I'd like to avoid that as much as I could. The whole point of this thread is to get introduced to music you never heard of before but might end up liking.
I'll start off with one remix of a classic music that I particularly like, and my favorite of the whole game:
March 15th, 2013, 03:50 PM
Not bad, it's pretty catchy.
Probably my most favorite song in the whole series.
March 15th, 2013, 04:25 PM
Greeeaaaat! I like it ;D
Phoenix Wright - Objection theme
March 16th, 2013, 03:11 AM
Ah yes, the objection theme. Man I love this one, the moments when it plays are usually one of the best. The feeling that you actually found out a hole in the witness's testimony is second to none, and with that music you feel unstoppable. There's just something about tht music that makes me think "I got you now!", and the other objection themes from the series just don't even come close, except Ace Attorney Investigation's.
By the way, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 remixed that theme. Check it out! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lbv5AJDh9o8) It's a lot better than the Cornered remix, imo.
For the theme I'm gonna post, it's actually a rather obscure one. I just love how, while the Minor Circuit theme was more triumphant to indicates Punch Out's return, the Major Circuit just screams "things got serious, and you will lose", coupled by the fact the Major Circuit's boxers being the craziest of the bunch, just helps this theme stand out. One of the many fantastic themes of this game. YOOOOOOSHAAAAA!
It also makes fights a lot more badass. Check out how fitting it is for this fight in particular. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPbOmyNTZZc)
March 16th, 2013, 10:14 AM
Hey yeah, I do agree on you about how the tone of the music does scream out to, "you should finally get serious, or else you're going to pay". Plus it is pretty catchy, and it does have a certain gesture that it's way different from the other themes of Punch Out I listened to! 9/10
Now, I've been listening to a lot of Persona tracks lately, but more specifically, Persona 3 and Persona 4 tracks. So, for the theme I'll post, I'll post this one:
It sort of as a feel that you're in a party, or just casually hanging about with friends~
March 16th, 2013, 11:24 AM
6/10. Catchy, but not quite what I like,.
KHBBS "Black Powder".
(I wish they put this in the game for more than just a boss and a half for Terra's story, and the Keyblade Graveyard cutscenes)
March 16th, 2013, 03:25 PM
I'll be honest, I was never big into Kingdom Heart's soundtrack. (Mind you, I never played the games.) But this one I actually like. The Disney side of Kingdom Hearts is what I like, and that sounds something I'd hear from a Disney movie. It has quite a magical feel. Certainly not as cliche as I expected. Thumbs up.
I figured I should post something from Rhythm Heaven, but the soundtrack is so phenomenal it's too hard to decide what I should post. I ended up going with this, because I remembered my little sister and cousins love it so much, and so do I! BA BUM BUM BUM! TWO, THREE, FOUR!
March 17th, 2013, 07:02 AM
VGMusic? Okay, I can get behind this. You also made this too easy, Spinosaurus. :P I don't even have to listen to it.
I give Air Rally an 7.5 or an 8 in relation to Rhythm Heaven itself. I dunno where I'd rank it considering all VG music in and of itself, I listen to a lot of soundtracks on a daily basis, so it's really hard for me to rate them as a collective.
Air Rally's definitely catchy and upbeat, but there's still some songs that top it, even from Tengoku. Examples? Well, I think Space Soccer is a bit more ambitious, and Love Lab or whatever that was called is a good example of setting a mood. I feel even Space Dance is more memorable. And now that I'm drawing the parallels, I also find Ping Pong more memorable as well (it's simplier for sure, but it's a lot more melodic, so I can recall and hum it easier). Same thematic idea, and it also had the Space Dancers. I guess everything they touch is pretty solid.
Here's a song I still can't get enough of today. Melodic all day long, but pretty powerful too. Manabu Namiki, I bow down to your awesome. orz
March 19th, 2013, 07:55 AM
I do like the beat of that myself! It certainly fits the mood of the game~! 8.5!
Hm, has anyone played Cave Story before? For the music that I'm going to show, this is it's theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-aitfK7jRE
March 19th, 2013, 10:17 AM
I've Cave Story before, but I got stuck on certain part (don't remember where) and I kind of gave up :l 8.5
As long as we are on the topic of Cave Story:
March 19th, 2013, 11:04 AM
I do own Cave Story+ on steam (don't know how and why) and I have only played for about 20 minutes. After listening to this track I shall endeavor to give it another try. 8/10
Dirge for Planet by Firelake from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
March 19th, 2013, 11:13 AM
That was a nice acoustic piece. Maybe I'll give the game a try, but I'm kinda sick of FPS's lately.
The main theme for Plane Scape: Torment
So far I'm liking what I'm playing. Wish I had gotten into this game way back when.
March 19th, 2013, 11:16 AM
That is addicting.. .u. I love it!
March 19th, 2013, 11:24 AM
Oh heeeey! Persona 4. <3 I do love the reincarnated versions; this one especially. <3 9.5!
Anywho, this piece of music is a faovurite of mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7fqllhtdHI
It's from Legend of Zelda, the Wind Waker. I think the music there is pretty underrated imo~
March 19th, 2013, 12:45 PM
The memories. :D
March 19th, 2013, 03:22 PM
Nice and relaxing...
Here's one of my favorites from Digimon Dawn/Dusk,
March 19th, 2013, 03:33 PM
March 19th, 2013, 07:48 PM
Oooooh, I like this thread! It'll expose me to some very cool video game soundtracks!
For the Persona song above me, I'd give it a 8/10. I didn't really like the riff and the timbre of the rhythm guitar in the beginning and verses, but it grew on me about 40 seconds in the song. But what I liked was the chorus and the buildup to it! I loved the tension between the verse and the chorus, the transition of the buildup, and the bridge of the song. Actually going to listen to it again right now!
How about we get that 8-bit flow? You probably know this one, and if you do, it would be cool to rate something familiar to you, ne?
March 20th, 2013, 02:57 AM
Ooh, a vg music thread. I see myself checking this out a fair bit. =)
I love GSC tunes, in part admittedly due to nostalgia. But they have really made a lot of good tunes in that game in their own right imo.
This one I like, but there's a good number I prefer over it. The beginning of the tune is not that catchy or that great, but the second half is pretty nice and does make up for it. It suits as a quiet town/towns theme as well, so it does its job there. I'll go with 7/10.
I might as well go with a tune of a recent game I've played a lot of, courtesy of a friend lending it to me.
One of my favourite tunes from the game, and it's one of many as well. Pity it doesn't sound like the highest quality version and I couldn't find better. Good enough?
March 22nd, 2013, 03:09 PM
7/10 I liked it more than expected.
Here's the battle theme for the Tarzan-based world in KH1.
March 22nd, 2013, 03:31 PM
10/10 Deep Jungle was my favorite place in KH.. Mostly because the music! It all fits together so well.
Here is a favourite, from Touhou series.
March 22nd, 2013, 03:59 PM
For the Touhou theme I'd give it a 8. It's really not a bad theme at all! I've always liked the style of this type of music; it always intrigues me, and the fast pace style of the music does make me want to prepare for, say, a boss or final boss of video games, y'know?
Anyways, this is pretty much my favourite castle theme from all of the Super Mario games:
I really wish that the Wii and the Wii U Super Mario versions had the same thing, but, oh well.
March 22nd, 2013, 04:10 PM
Me and you both, that theme was always my favorite castle theme. The Dracula-esque vibe it got helps add atmosphere to the castles, which I feel is sorely lacking in the later NSMB games, as fantastic as they are. For all the crap NSMB gets for its music, that castle theme is really great.
I want to post a soundtrack from my favorite game, which is Wario Land 4. Took a while to decide what to choose for the game because the soundtrack is phenomenal, but I ended up choosing this because I feel it represents the game and Wario the best, if that makes sense. Helps this particular level is the best one in my opinion!
March 23rd, 2013, 01:37 PM
I give that...an 8/10. I've never played this game before, but I'd say this song was pretty good. I'll give this game a try, yes?
Ugh, I'm so biased...
March 23rd, 2013, 02:08 PM
Ah, the nostalgia this track gives me. I'd rate it an 8/10 because I loved the instruments used but I actually hate rap which is conflicting for me because I loved Persona 3.
The first battle theme from Tales of Vesperia.
March 24th, 2013, 12:14 AM
Ahh, a video game music thread! ^-^ As for the Tales of Vesperia battle, I think itounds cool! I'd probably give it a 7/10, though a lot of it has to do with my personal taste (I felt it started great, but the melody got a bit too... "muddy" for my liking in the middle or something). [Also, "Down, sword hand!" is an awesome quote!]
How about this one: http://youtu.be/VXZbQ0ZI4E4
March 24th, 2013, 06:17 AM
Wheeee I love Paper Mario. 9/10 Really catchy, but it's a little repetitive. Love the instruments used.
More touhou for you.
March 26th, 2013, 12:58 PM
One of my faves and it still is
March 26th, 2013, 07:17 PM
YO, Stickerbrush. Yoooooooooo.
That's just a straight up 10/10 for me! I never played DKC2, but my exposure to this song was through Super Smash Bros Brawl, the track called "Bramble Blast" that was a MUCH more up-tempo, really remixed version of this song. And for a good amount of time, Bramble Blast was my favourite Brawl track. Then I heard that it was a remix of Stickerbrush Symphony, and naturally I went to listen. And I was nothing short of amazed. It had the same kind of melodic theme which I loved, but was SO different and so relaxing. I love when songs successfully do that: when they really remix it to have a completely different overall feel but the same theme conveyed by the melody. And I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the difference. Not to mention it's such a chill, awesome track on its own. Thank you for this, Jay!
March 27th, 2013, 04:01 PM
While certainly not horrible, it doesn't really stand out to me that much. It has a nice beat, but other than that, it's not the best I've heard.
How's about this one:
March 27th, 2013, 05:15 PM
I didn't mind that Monkey Ball track (hehe, track) personally. Not amazing but certainly alright and with a neat tune underneath it.
For the above track I'll go with 7/10, if only because the competition from other megaman tunes are quite intense as it is and it doesn't quite pip some of them. Still a nice tune in its own right - decent build up and seems fitting of the name as well.
Let's go with this as it came up on my playlist today!
March 27th, 2013, 05:46 PM
I LOVE mother 3, and earthbound. Great song and it bought back a load of nostalgia. Such great memories of simple times.
Yup, this thread suits me. I have a youtube playlist dedicated to great VG music with over 100 tracks on it.
Going to go ahead and link this classic.
Oh and a link to the playlist if anyone is interested; Playlist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOWUSsFar-s&list=PLBACD9438F15D381B)
edit: Shuffle it for best results, unless you want music from the same game/franchise grouped together.
Editedit: Here's a list of the top 1000 VGM tracks of all time. I highly recommend everyone checks out at least the top 25 or so. Feel free to stick it in the first post.
March 28th, 2013, 08:57 AM
8/10. It's as good as it can probably get with a 16 bit(I think, I'm not entirely sure) tune. Kinda reminds me of the awesome that's Balrog's theme in all its SF2 Turbo glory.
And to the guy who posted Scars of Time, Chrono Cross represent! One of the best opening theme songs I've ever heard. Brought back so much memories.
And to the guy who posted Joy, it's a freaking sweet tune. It's played throughout the entirety of the game until it became just background noise. Then Memories of You made it beautiful again.
Not sure if theme song counts, but here's one from Zone of the Enders 2, perhaps the most mecha game ever made. I recommend watching the trailer though.
March 28th, 2013, 08:56 PM
Zone of the Enders 2 - beyond bounds.
7/10. Zone of the enders was really great, and that's a particularly good track.
Now I was going to post Persona 3 - The Battle for Everyone's Souls, however there has already been a few Persona tracks listed so taking that into account;
If anyone missed out on playing Katamari, I highly suggest you do so. It's a sadly overlooked gem.
Having real trouble sticking to just one video per post, I simply have too much great music to post, expect tracks from the likes of 'parasite eve' and 'Secret of mana' in the future, not to mention some more obvious ones like LoZ and Castlevania.
March 29th, 2013, 12:57 AM
I don't know what my true feelings are for this piece. I guess I have to play the game to get a better idea on it. However, I like the 'upbeat' nature to the piece, sounds reminiscent to something I've heard in the past.
Man, this game is awesome in almost every aspect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_qXcOjI9oI
March 30th, 2013, 11:52 AM
8/10. I liked that game although it was hard.
Here is Terra's theme from KHBBS.
March 30th, 2013, 07:21 PM
8/10 I've never played the game, but the theme was highly enjoyable
It's sad that one of the coolest themes in the game goes to one of the weakest creatures.
March 31st, 2013, 06:08 AM
This theme was perfect for the situation you are in.Chopping up the boss to bits was epic! :D
April 1st, 2013, 11:43 AM
9/10 sounds pretty epic. Zelda always has great music.
This is from the first Doom game. It gets stuck in my head a lot.
April 1st, 2013, 12:28 PM
7/10 That is addicting <_>
April 2nd, 2013, 04:47 AM
8/10 It was... interesting. Not very high on the lyrics (Baby baby baby etc) but the tune itself is upbeat and I could see that working for a game battle theme.
I like this as a game title screen tune. It's very upbeat and promising, if that makes sense. Game is full of good tunes though. =D
April 2nd, 2013, 07:20 AM
8/10 Bouncy and Fun, It fits the game quite nicely.
It was never meant, to be, but it could of been something amazing.
April 6th, 2013, 03:35 PM
This sounds like it has a good vibe to it, would have worked pretty well. I'm gonna give it a 9/10.
April 6th, 2013, 06:41 PM
Sonic 3 has amazing music, but Ice Cap Zone act 2 takes the cake: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtQtbWifobQ
April 6th, 2013, 08:19 PM
8/10, have to love Sonic's soundtracks.
For the lulz, each and every one of them ~
April 13th, 2013, 04:42 PM
Nice to know that the victory fanfare's been a staple over the years! Maybe 8.5/10? Yeah, let's go with that.
Here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQA2gWYUrcY
This one made me pause for a while when I first heard it. ^-^
April 13th, 2013, 05:22 PM
8/10 certainly a very pleasant track, from a great game!
I think I'll go with one of my favorite NES games;
April 14th, 2013, 11:26 AM
I quite like the classic Castlevania games. I mean, they have great gameplay and overall good music.
How about something completely different? Here's the main theme of one of my favorite modern games:
EDIT: Sorry that it's just a link, embedding the video kept resulting in an error.
April 14th, 2013, 12:22 PM
9/10 I love it!
I should really go back and play bioshock again it was great.
also a guide on using the youtube embedding, in case that's why you got the error:
You only paste the part of the link after 'watch?v=' between tthe youtube tags.
If your full youtube link is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuA6ZjpEJys
Then you would but 'PuA6ZjpEJys' between the youtube tags.
Have one from bioshocks spiritual successor;
April 14th, 2013, 12:50 PM
8/10. It's got that fast-paced electronic riff throughout the track which sounds like it could go along nicely in a futuristic hover racer game, such as F-Zero GX.
April 14th, 2013, 01:44 PM
It has an interesting retro feel with the techno music.
Here is mine:
