This drawing was inspired by many people, and this is what the finished wolf looks like, though i'm still unsure whether to add a background, and if so what to do. Suggestions welcome.

Well, it looks really, really good!
But, yeah, you should add a background to it!
Also, I'd recommend possibly going in and adding a few detail brushstrokes to the fur, since the eyes, nose, and mouth are fairly sharp and crisp, while the fur appears blurry and a lot closer...
Overall, however, it looks very, very nice indeed. GJ!

The wolf really looks realistic; more so if the eyes and nose blends in with the picture. Good job!
As for background, I'm not sure, but you could try something like in the daylight (although I think wolves look better in nighttime ^_^;;)

'tis a nice wolf but a bit more of the golds they have round their muzzle and on the eyes would really help this along.

I can't actully draw them so to me this is cool x)

Kinda looks like you cut the eyes and nose out and the body from a pic and pasted them all together....(just from the outline, you should add hairs going out from the body)

TY all so much 4 ur lovely comments. Since then I've been messing around with fluffyness as i do was it to look fluffier, and have come up with this! lol I realise the eyes look more defined btw, but its weird on the actuall pic i used for a guide the eyes where even more defined, its such a hard thing to capture. Still trying b/g, not very succesful. not much seems to capture the esscence and allow you to see the detail easily. I think it's the white b/g which makes the eyes look more defined so i'll keep trying. TY all so much again though. I appreciate the comments :)

igtica, I've found a really nifty site with some professional-grade painting tutorials that are right up your alley... Granted, the artist uses Photoshop, but most of the concepts can be ported to other paining applications (like Paint Shop Pro, etc) without much trouble...

And here's a direct link to her fur tutorial:
