Most of you younger kids won't know any of what I'm talking about here, but we'll just see what kind of response this gets. Anyway, I was wondering how many old-school anime we can remember from our childhood. I'll start us off. Please feel free to comment on any of the ones listed as well as your own (in fact, I'm hoping that's what you'll do, because the more we talk about them, the more we're likely to remember). Chances are, we'll remember some old cartoons that some of us never even knew were anime!

Now, I'm not trying to sound ageist here, but please keep them at least ten years old. And that means you were actually WATCHING them ten years ago. That's really the sort of thing I'm talking about.

So here we go. Here are the ones I'd like to mention.

First of all, in it's earlier years, Nickelodeon was really good about airing anime. Of course, I didn't know what anime was back then, and I never did quite understand why the cartoon characters' mouths didn't quite match the voices, but oh well. Here are some of the ones I saw on Nickelodeon:

Maya the Bee: Not much I can say about this one. It was about a plucky little female bee and her bug buddies.

David the Gnome: I think that's what the title of this series was. It was the adventures of a tiny gnome called David, and his life in the forest with his village. Really cute.

Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics: My first introduction to the brothers Grimm. Really great storytelling in these, but of course, the fairy tales themselves were quite sugarcoated to make them suitable for children.

The Noozles: An incredibly well-thought-out kids series about a little girl whose father sends her a magical stuffed Koala doll that comes to life when she rubs noses with it. I actually remember quite a bit from this series, because I used to watch it religiously. It seems that these Koalas were from a magical dimension (Koallawalla land, lol), and it just so happened that the little girl's father - who had gone missing - had become trapped in the same dimension. There were some very sad scenes, but for the most part, it was a lighthearted series that focused on friendship and responsibility. I truly loved it.

Adventures of the Little Koala: Yay! Another Koala anime! :) This series was a pretty easygoing and lighthearted series about a Koala child named Roobear, and his exploits with his animal buddies and his family. Fun to watch, but kind of sugary-sweet.

The Adventures of the Little Prince: I'm pretty sure this was a take on the french children's story. Anyway, it was about a prince who lived on an asteroid, and caught rides on comets to visit Earth. Pretty fun to watch. I like those "fish out of water" stories, lol.

Littl' Bits: Can't remember a whole lot about it, except that I really hated the opening theme song, lol. The characters were really tiny. :D

Belle and Sebastian: An old anime that was actually created the same year I was born. :) I can remember being sooo hooked on this one... it was like a soap opera, lol. I never did get to find out if Sebastian found his mother, but I loved it just the same. I felt so bad for the nice dog that everyone called a monster, lol.

Other old Anime:

Voltron: Defender of the Universe: I can remember having one of the lions, lol.

Unico: God, I LOVED this show! I wish they'd bring it back so I could watch it again, and remember what it was about, lol.

Rainbow Brite: I've noticed that it's beginning to gain more popularity all of the sudden. I wonder why that is? Anyway, I must've watched "Rainbow Brite and the Starstealer" a million times when I was a kid, lol.

Whew. I guess that's enough. I hope a lot more people share their own old-school anime experiences! :)

Hey! I remember David the Knome and The Noozles. I used to watch those shows faithfully when I was a young kid. I remember I used to watch them during the summer months I was off from school. Man, those bring back memories. I loved the fox (or coyote, can't remember exactly) that David the Knome used to ride on.

Litl' Bits sounds familiar, but I can't remember it. Oh, and Volton... me and my two older brothers grew up with that show. They adored that show. I guess after a while, they outgrew it or something. I guess that explains why I liked Power Rangers when it first started... of course, after Power Rangers in Space, the show got horrendously stupid, so I stopped watching.

Lol... you're the same age as me! No wonder you remember some of these. ^_~ Yeah, I watched 'em at my aunt's house. My dad had a heart transplant when I was about six, and my parents had to have me and my brother stay at my great-aunt's place until they could save enough money to buy a new house. My aunt and uncle were a little weird, but I got to watch all the cartoons i wanted, lol. It's a wonder I never got fat, considering how much I sat in front of the TV. :P

Ohhh...I remember a lot of older shows, most of which could beat out half the stuff today. The older versions of Cyborg 009 and Mazinger are what pretty much got me into anime. It's all really dated of course, but that still doesn't mean it isn't some of the best stuff I've ever seen.

Go lion was okay too, I didn't like it that mucch...To campy. MSGundam seemed better, the art was crap...even for the 70s but the story was great and it was the first "realistic" robot show ever.

Last Exile isn't even five yreas old, I'm sure it wouldn't really be called "Old school". But meh...This thread made me want to go back through my old Cyborg 009 tapes...I forgot how good Ishinomori's first works were. Even if the animation is dated...Still good.

Although I don't know for sure, I don't think AstroBoy is considered an old school anime. I think it's pretty recent within the past four or five years.

Speed Racer... I think it's old... been around for a while... *thinks of the Speed Racer spoof on Family Guy and chuckles*

Actually Astro Boy was one of the very first anime and manga ever O.o The version that had been airing was just the latest remake, it's well over 50 years old.

The only one from the lists above that I remember is Voltron, and it rocked! Most of the others were probably never shown in Australia, with the exception of Astro Boy. Along the lines of old-school anime, who ever watched Teknoman, or Tekkaman as i think it was called? Teknoman was and still is, one of absolute favourite mecha-animes.

Teknoman...I remember that, it was one of the first "dark and gritty" anime that I watched, loved it.

Oh... my... dear... lord!

I actually remember seeing all these old shows on Nick when I was just 9 or 10 years old!!!

Even to this day, I still like Voltron and Speed Racer.

However since this is an old school anime thread... my most favorite is Robotech. Ever since I first saw that show, I've wanted to get into a Veritech or an Alpha Fighter and shoot down some Zentreadi and Invid scum.

Heck, I still watch Robotech to this day and I got myself some tranformable Veritech and Alpha fighters of my own! They set me back about $80 a pop. XD

Mwahahahah!!! OMG!! *Laughs herself hoarse* Heaaaouoouuh.... Uh... Sorry 'bout that. It was the irony. Just struck me so suddenly, you know? I'm talking about the Noozles. Y'see, Koallawalla land was a strange spin on Australia - or at least its animal kingdom. I can remember there being Kiwis and Platypus (or is it Platypii? 0_o) and Kangaroos all over the place (not to mention all the Koalas). In fact, Sandy's father, while he was held captive there, fixed a cracked egg that belonged to a Platypus family, and the father-to-be was so grateful, he snuck him out of the Kangaroo police's grasp. Whee! It's all coming back to me!

I never did get to see any of Astro Boy, but I've heard of it. I believe it was called "Tetsuwon Atom" in Japanese, and it was created by Ozamu Tezuka, the "God of Anime." Or at least, I believe that's what his unofficial title is, lol.

Speed Racer! Omg, I can't believe I forgot that one... O' course, I never really cared too much for it, tho... that might have been why, lol. About the only part of that series that I cared for was the theme song, lol.

Anything from Tezuka or Ishinomori is really good, most of it's all from before the 90s though. Still, it's some of the best stuff I've ever seen.

Any of those 'Brave' Mecha Anime... The ORIGINAL Gundam, Astroboy and VOltron I've seen... Don't know if Dragonball is considered old school. Yea, I'm that really weird person that likes digging deep into the very first 'thing' of that phenomenom.

I remember seeing a few episodes of David the Gnome, I'm certain...I remember some gnome dude, anyways. :P

Voltron...I absolutely loved Voltron when I was a kid. O_o I used to watch it even before it came on Cartoon Network, back when it was on the USA channel around here, about 1991 - '92...and I even had some recorded eps of it on tape, though I'm not sure if I still have them.

Rainbow Brite...is that even an anime? But I used to have some episodes on tape, and I saw the one movie...though the tape broke, and I don't have a copy of the movie...

The first anime that I watched that I realized was an anime, though, was Gatchaman (the G-Force dub version, anyways). Back in 1995 I was watching that show as much as I could on CN. @_@ "Obsessed" is almost too light of a word to use, shamefully enough. And for some reason, even though it's not the best of shows, it's still one of my favorites...

I watched Speed Racer around that time, too...though I wasn't as into it. :P
