Here is whare you can request help or files dealing with RM2K (or 2K3) or just discuss it in general. You can still make new topics for your games you ae making.

Hey, i neeed help on making my pkmn game...how can you make the ledges work? like when you push down you jump...like the real game!

DarkMage31
January 24th, 2004, 10:08 PM
Ah, ledges. I haven't actually attempted this yet, but I'd put an event right before the ledge on Hero Touch that has a fork condition for the Hero facing down (if you are facing down) then use a move event like Start Jump, Down, End Jump. That should do it.

UnrealPoke > a lot of the resources you will use are custom. I recommend using iDraw 3 for the drawing; it's made specifically for RM2K. I have some face sets I can PM you later, as well as some chipsets. As for story, just make sure it's unique. You may not want the obligatory "new region" and "two hundred more pkmn" that everyone has come to expect. How about, you're a kid who's too poor to buy any pokeballs to catch a pokemon and to embarassed to ask a prof. for one, so he steals one from Ash or somebody. Then you have to train the stolen pkmn, overcome its hate of you, become the best against all odds, and face justice and truth to find out what is right. That is a combination of action (running from authorities, etc) with ethics (in the conclusion).

battle systems aren't something you just "get" like a graphical resource. They require hard work and a lot of dedication. To learn to make these well, follow my hints below.

I have attatched most of my resources in a zip to this message... have fun. Just give me a spot in your game's credits even though I didn't make all of them.

Hints:
1) Visit www.gaminggroundzero.com. There, download Kindred Saga and look at the coding that makes the battle system work. Then, go to files and look up files made by Syxtem. He makes a lot of pkmn files.

2) Visit www.gamingw.net. There, download rm2kemon and Pokemon Galaxy
to see the coding they use in those games. For you n00bs, I recommend using the battle system in Galaxy and RM2KeMon because it creatively adapts the default battle system instead of doing it all from scratch.

Sorry! I didn't realize! Gaming World's downloads are unreliable. Also, the filesize is too big for me to attatch, so I guess you'll just have to find another place to download! Sorry once again.

Maybe. Since I haven't actually attempted this myself, I can't help you (yet.) I'll try to put a ledge in my next demo release.

Also, for rm2kemon, try this link: http://www.geocities.com/pokeclonerpg/games.html
it should work

Maybe you need to check the chipset or see if the even is done correctly. What I mean by that is see if the pages, if you have more than one for that event are set so that you don't repeat an old action.

Or maybe its part of an evil conspiracy to overthrow all up and rising game designers...nah... :paranoid:

Are you using the "official" style sprites or traditional RM2K style? You can rip your own sprites from a Rom if you want to - that insures that genuine pkmn feel to it. And of course, you can get such a rom right on this board, ironically enough.

Unless we know what the error is, we can't really help you. Try checking the game's folder for the file RPG_RT.exe. The game can't run without it. Also, check to make sure all your Map[insert number here].lmu files and RPG_RT.ini files are in their respectful locations. The following files are necessary for a game to play:

The folders for the resources of your game
RPG_RT.lmt
RPG_RT.ini
Map X.lmu (X for any number)
RPG_RT.exe

Make sure you have those files!

Possibly because I posted it stickied because we have quite a few RM2K fans (not the PS one) and people kept posting threads asking for the same chipsets and stuff so I made this. And as you see, people are getting help so.....

I'm making a Pokémon game in rm2k3 ^-^ and i want to make a system that you can use one Pokémon at the time. (You select one in the field and then when you battle, you fight only with one PoKémon in the party. A sort of party switch)

Berserk

Hope this helps, and hope you read it anyway.

February 7th, 2004, 01:37 PM
hey! It works! thanks eh! The only thing i hafta do is to make him only jump when hes facing down...

DarkMage31
February 7th, 2004, 01:56 PM
I'm glad you question was answered pichaque!

Sharpedo> There are many ways you can do a party switch. But it really depends on how you're doing your battle system (CBS, ABS, DBS, etc). One thing you might want to try is saving all your party members identities in a variable and then removing all of them but the first one. After battle you can have an event returning everyone else to your party that were saved in the variables. Do you understand how you may want to accomplish this or do you want me to explain myself a bit more? The key with RM2K is creatively using the resources and commands to do something totally different than the default.

Berserk
February 8th, 2004, 02:03 AM
If hero facing down: Start jump, down, end jump.
Else: Hero move down (Trying to recreate when you try
to go up a hill but it's too high and you slide down.)

And I had to start my game again.
Thanks for asking.

Sorry, don't have any. But, what you can do is take screen captures from the VBA rom and move things around in a chipset in a program like iDraw 3, a free drawing tool made specifically for RM2K, especially for drawing Charsets. It's good for everything though!

How bad would the lag be on a 500x500 map?

-Edit-

Sorry for double posting.

Depends on your events/common events, some of them can have alot of lag if you scripted them wrong.. but it shouldnt really lag on 500 x 500 map, i've tested it a few times, i got no lag from it.. but if it lags too much, cut your map up into regions (if your making a world map)

Berserk
February 17th, 2004, 11:05 PM
Thanks for the advice, but I keep getting the
feeling that if I cut my maps to much, it wont
feel natural. Anyway, thanks for trying to help.
(What I mean by lag is not about the speed.
When I walk around, there are these weird horizontal lines
coming out and disappearing.)

-Edit-

Could someone tell me the sizes and what colour map
I should save my charasets, chipsets, pictures, e.t.c.

I been only using the program for a couple of days and rite now ive just done 3 towns already but no events going on rite now. But first i wanna try doing the battle system before continuing on. So if anyone of you can help me how I could do the official battle system of pokemon or any programming codings can provide me it will be greatful. If you can help me you can email me at sp1d3rm3n@yahoo.com. Also here's some screenshots I hope you all like :D.

Why don't you just download Darkmage31's game
or some others on gamingw.net or something.
Anyway, if you start a thread on it or something,
it's more likely people are going to help.

There are plenty of other sites as well. By the way, those maps look GREAT! Real pokemon-looking!

If you want to download a game to observe, go to www.gaminggroundzero.com and download Kindred Saga by QHeretic. It has a great CBS and CMS. I'm helping a lot of people with their custom battle systems lately, so I'm making a tutorial (don't look for it any time soon-it's long). But until then, I'm sorry I can't help much- I'm a bit over my quota, if you know what I mean, not to mention drop-dead busy away from my computer. Those that have already established a PM correspondance, please continue, but I would appreciate it if the rest of you hold off for a few weeks until I have more time. Thanks, and sorry I can't do much yakapuka. You can learn the same way I did- experimenting, trial and error, as well as examining other games. That's the real way to learn-doing it yourself. Of course, tutorials and tutoring also works, but not as well. For those of you who are already recieving my Rm2k advice, keep this in mind. I may guide, but you will never reach your full potential if you don't experiment with the code.

I brought this here as someone said it's more appropriate.

Well pageparts.com are offering free
C++ courses. This is the first website that I learnt
C++ from and it will help you with making your own
games. Hey, I learned C++ when I was 13. It's hard
at first, but I'm glad that I've learned it. If you want
something else easier, I would recommend Sphere
or RM2K.

Difficulty Level:
C++>Sphere>RM2K

Progress Rate:
RM2K>Sphere>C++

Independance rate:
C++>=Sphere>RM2K (Depends on what you're
trying to do)

This is just something I've written for you people.
Choose the thing that fits you!

system? Or do you want to control both? You can make them kiss both ways.

DarkMage31
February 29th, 2004, 12:22 PM

Berserk

Hey, I'm lost hasn't even come into the forum
since the last time she posted that question.
Anyway, if you're still here,
for a catterpillar system it will be best to go to
gamingw.net and look at some tutorials (sometimes it's down,
and sometimes it isn't) and if you want to control both and make them kiss,
I suggest that you make a very thin sprite that looks like to people,
and for the kiss, use the player GFX change thingy.

Yakapuka> Start by making some variables: First Position, Second Position, and so on. Those will represent each pokemon's position in your party. Next step, we need to put pokemon into those variables. In your Hero Database, check the numbers for each hero. 0001 is who you play as and the others (0002, 0003, etch) are your pokemon. My database looks like this:
0001: Hiro
0002: Rival
0003 Bulbasaur
etc.
When you are adding pokemon to your party, have an event like as follows:
<>Message:Which position would you like to put this pokemon?
<>Show Choice: [1st],[2nd],[3rd],[4th]
:[1st] Handler:
Conditional Branch: Var:[Position 1] is, 0 > this just checks to see if this spot is open
Sucessfully placed!
:Else >If the spot is not vacant, do the following:
Message: Party position taken! Switch?
Show choice > You get the idea. Then just have a yes/no choice.
Now for the good stuff:
<>VAriable Oper: [Position 1]Set,X
X is equal to your party number. If you are setting your playable character to position one, it would read:
<>Variable Oper: [Position 1]Set,1
You would do the same for Position 2, 3, and four. Just do that when a Pokemon is captured and you'll be all set.
Now you have all your Pokemon assigned to variables. This makes things SOO much easier.

When it comes time to isolating just the first Pokemon, just create a Battle Event (database) that says the following:
<>Change Party Members: V[Position 2] Remove
<>Change Party Members: V[Position 3] Remove
<>Change Party Members: V[Position 4] Remove

That way you are left only with Position 1! When you want your other Pokemon back, just do
<>Change Party Members: V[Position 4] Add
etc.
Just make sure you don't set your Position Variables back to 0. Then you can't recover them.

If you want more help, just contact me again.

For enter hero name, all you need to do is install the patch correctly and then choose in your event "Enter Hero Name," select the hero you want to name, and click OK. The End.

As for changing your hero's sprite, all you need to do is in your event choose the command, "Change Hero Walk GFX," choose the hero you want to set, and then choose the new graphic. This can be combined with the command "Show Choice" that enables the player to make a decision in the game (Yes/No, True/False) with up to four choices. In field 1 you can enter "Male" and in the second field "Female." In the handler for each decision put the graphic change command. That way when they select "Male" the sprite of the character is male, and when they click "Female" they play as a female character. Capiche?

Here's sample code for the intro:
<>Message: Hello, I'm Oak and welcome to the world of Pokemon!
<>Message: Erm, what was your name again?
<>Enter Hero Name: [Choose initial name in database [F8])
<>What gender are you?
<>Show Choice: Male/Female
:[Male]Case
<>Change Hero's Walk Graphic : [Inital Name]->[file of new sprite]-1 Set
<>
:[Female]Case
<>Change Hero's Walk Graphic: [Initial Name]->[file of new female sprite]-1 Set
<>
:END Case
<>

That's it! Of course that's the basics and it can get more complecated. Just make sure you have the charaset (sprite) for Male and Female. Here's a start:

Just let me know if you don't understand something!

You don't need a chipset for Enter Hero Name. It's an event command if you have the patch (tab 2 under your event command listings, I think)

i have a problem... umm.. well its complicated.. i have a pokemon follow you around in my pokemon game.. and when you leave town it retreats into it's pokeball.. but i have some events for my CBS that teleport you to the battle.. anyway lets not get into that.. sometimes when you walk back into town the pokemon doesnt appear. it plays the sound but the pokemon isnt there.. i have checked whether it was one of the switches but it didnt seem to be.. the problem fixed itself when i went into the prof's lab (in town) and went back out.. he was following me again.. i have copied most of the things in the event but it still didnt work..

and one more thing.. i have used about 200 maps and i think the game just deteriates after a while... some of the switches dont seem to turn on even though i have turned them on.. (and i ended up having to do it mannually) and it doesnt change the character graphic correctly.. (fixed graphic doesnt work)but this is a long long way into the game.. i was wondering is this just rm2k or can i fix it? sorry this is such a long post.

March 19th, 2004, 07:54 AM
sorry for double posting but i have a reflection in my game.. it just requires so many processes running at one time that it lags.. you need a decent computer to view it properly..i have an idea to make it run a lot smoother and with pratically no processes.. but i need to know if i can make the walking graphic of the reflection walk UNDERNEATH the bridge (which the hero needs to walk on top of).. any ideas? uh maybe i should just convert the f*cking thing to rm2k3

DarkMage31
March 19th, 2004, 03:59 PM
Post 1> I'm not sure. It's hard to tell without having played it or seen it. 200 maps? Wow! Can't wait to play your game!

Post 2> I did my reflection with a catepillar system that is turned on and off depending on if you are on the water or not. How are you doing yours now? I tried the under-the-bridge thing, but that's hypothetically impossible because the reflection is on the level below hero, and so is the bridge. The engine can't compute two flat images on the same plane, so it can't be done unless you are riding your Airship, the bridge is set to "Same Level as Hero" and the reflection is "below hero."

sh*t!!! please excuse my language, i just did a big explanation on how i managed it then i tried to put in a screenshot and i dragged it into the text area and it just went to where i had the screenshot.. then when i clicked back, the text was gone. oh well.. i dont know how to attatch files and such.. ok let me start again..
DarkMage31, im sorry to prove you wrong but i figured it out. Anyone is welcome to use this but please give me credit. ok.. *takes a deep breath*
first of all, i got the chipset from your lunar game (hope you dont mind) "Masterset" i think it was.. and i copied the file (so i didnt ruin anything and could always start agin)
then i grabbed the bridge part of the chipset (both of them) and i moved them over to the upper layer editing mode you might have to shave off a few pixels, give or take.. (you will find out why soon) then i went to the empty spot and coloured it in the same colour as the shadow underneath the bridge (purely for effect, and also to seperate the reflection from the water) ok u guys still with me? ok after that i put some pink (seethrough colour, just use the one that everything else uses) tile onto the part of the bridge that showed the water (you know, the shadow bit). after this i went to my map, and placed water everywhere. then i placed the shadow tile where i wanted my bridge. the next step is obviously going into upper layer editing mode and placing down the bridge. ok, we all clear with that? now comes the tricky part ;) dont worry i will coach you through it. first i made a new event that had my character's graphic on it and put it where the start of my bridge was, (where you have just teleported to). have you done that part? good. now make the event ABOVE HERO that is very important!!ok.. phew.. What?? more to go??? *shock* now this gets a bit complicated now.. so please stay with me. create an event which it the same level as hero. now place this event all around your bridge, sort of like a barrier (except for at the place where you enter and exit you bridge, that would be just stupid). ok now we have that? now go into 1st or 2nd layer editing mode, doesnt really matter. and select the "Select Tool" it looks like an arrow pointing to a dotted-lined square. now select your whole map and move it up 1 square (dont place anything important at the top of the map graphic-wise because it will now magically disappear) and fix up the bottom of your map if necesary. sorry this isnt the way i moved the squares it but it is a lot easier to explain and less work involved. ok so now ur map should look a bit wierd, not a problem! it is very necesary! it should look like you can walk on one half of the bridge and part of the water (if your bridge is two squares wide like mine). ok thats most of the work out of the way now. *sigh* ok here we go i set my start party position to this map (for test purposes) then i made an event which changed my graphic to that of the reflection. hey whats goin on here, u may ask? well this is the only way to complete the reflection. and you know that event we did a long time ago with our character on it? you should be putting a caterpillar code on it about now.. use mine if you want, it's at the bottom. i tweaked it a bit to work with this specifically. ok, now we look like our reflection and we have a caterpillar following us.. the next step is to go into the database (if you dont know what that is, then you probly shouldnt try this) and go under the chipset tab (tileset if ur using rm2k3) select your chipset with the bridge and everything. and select the option "passing block" ("passability" if your with rm2k3) go to the bridge graphic and click it until it turns into a star, this means that it is above the hero. then go to your water and shadow graphic and click them until they turn into circles.. also click the grass one into a star and anything that you have put ontop of the grass (because if you dont, they will disappear underneath the grass) and thats about it. *yay* wow it didnt seem this long when i did it.ok what the ****, i will put up the caterpillar script. just because im feeling so good. this will be in rm2k style because i am too tired to translate it. im sure you will know what it means if you have used rm2k before rm2k3. *takes a big breath* <>CYCLE

Yo peeps! Im making my own game and i'd like to know how to set your own options on pause screen for example:

Item, Pokedex, Status, Pokemon, save, exit and quit game.

Plz help! By the way the name of my game is Pokemon Sunshine and if anyone could make or send me a good title screen that'll b great and i'll add you in the credits!

Cheers!

DarkMage31
March 21st, 2004, 03:53 PM
I should make a company for title screen making! It'll be called... DarkMage Titles Incorporated! I'd be happy to make one for you. For a sun in the background, would you like it to be a cartoony yellow circle with rays or a realy sun photograph?

And to customize your menue you have to make a CMS. I tutored some guy a while back via PM's and fortunately I saved them. Here's my little tutorial:
There are two ways to make a CMS. One way is less PKMNish: use Show Choice to navigate. The other is fully customizable to look and be whatever you want (this is the one you should use). It involves using pictures, one for the menue, and one for the pointer. For each method, you have to get the menue to pop up. So, here's what you do (I'm only teaching you the second way, the only one worth your time and that actually looks like pokemon)

1) First, go into the Database and click Common Events. Create a new event and call it "Wait for Call" and set it to Parallel Process with a switch called "Enable Menue"
Your first command will be <>Key Input Proc: [0001:Key Input]. Key Input Processing is on the third page in your Commands list. Make sure the "Store Key Code in part is a variable you call Key Input. Under Options, check Wait Until Key Pressed, but leave the next one blank. Under Keys to Process, just check Cancel Key (6)

2) Next, Memorize BGM if you want a different tune playing just for the menue. If you want the screen to take a gray tint or something, now's the time. Then I have <>Switch Operation: [0002:Menue Called] ON and Switch Operations: [0001: Enable Menue] OFF.
End of common event.
Sample code:

<>Key Input Proc: [0001:Key Input]
<>Memorize BGM
<>Tint ScreenR080,G080,B080,S000),0.3 Sec
<>Play BGM: GS_stadium
<>Switch Operation: [0002:Menue Called] ON
<>Switch Operation: [0001:Enable Menue] OFF

3) New common event called (guess what?) "Menue Called" on Auto Start with a Trigger Switch of [0002:Menue Called]

4) Show your picture of the menue (I'll send you mine for an example, drawn by myself )
<>Show Picture: 2,pkmnLUNAR,(300,120)
<>Move Picture: 2,(240,120),0.3 Sec (Wait)
<>Show Picture: 5,pointer,(243,47)

5) Now the menue will appear onscreen, but your arrow keys don't control the menue arrow. That's the next step. First, we set the variables.
<>Variable Oper: [0003ointer Position Y]Set, 47
<>Variable Oper: [0004:Menue Loop]Set,1
<>Variable Oper: [0005ointer Pos X]Set,243

6)Now, we do the processing.
<>Loop
<>Move Picture: 5,(V[0005],V[0003]),0.0Sec(Wait)
<>Label: 1
<>Key Input Proc: [0006: Map Movement]
<>Branch if Var [0006:Map Movement]is 1
<>Play Sound: cursor2
<>Variable Oper: [0004:Menue Loop]+ 1
<>Variable Oper: [0003ointer Position Y]+ 20
<>Branch if Var [0004:Menue Loop]is 9 or more
<>Variable Oper: [0004:Menue Loop]Set, 1
<>Variable Oper: [0003ointer Position Y]- 160
:End
<>
:End

That's all for just the down key! Now, when you press down, the pointer will move down one item. When it reaches the bottom, it will jump back up to the top in a loop. Here's the up button code:
<>Branch if Var [0006:Map Movement]is 4
<>Play Sound: cursor2
<>Variable Oper: [0004:Menue Loop]- 1
<>Variable Oper: [0003ointer Position Y]- 20
<>Branch if Var [0004:Menue Loop]is 0 Less/Equal
<>Variable Oper: [0004:Menue Loop]Set, 8
<>Variable Oper: [0003ointer Position Y]+ 160
:End
<>
:End

Now, just hold on unti CMS part II so you learn the spacebar input so you can select the item the pointer is on.

Just do all that and tell me if it works, and we'll move on from there. I know it may seem long and complex, but I'm sure you'll do just fine!

If you got all that, I'll post Part II. It's also important to understand HOW it works, not just blindly follow steps to get results.

I also dont know how to make a web page... yet I refuse to give up... mainly because if i cant make this game, i will never be able to work in game programing.
So I have a few questions to ask... every one who answers will be in the credits... so here goes!

2)I cannot do this by myself... I really do need help. I f it needs to be on a web page for you guy to help, I need to know how to create a web page, wherte to create a web page and what not.
3)i have no clue as to how you pm somebody... i would appreciate it if some one told me
4)I need Character sets, battle sets, sheesh, i need all the sets for a pokemon game!

To demonstrife: 1. I have absolutely no idea.
2. Go to www.tripod.com or www.freewebs.com .They will get you started.
3. Click on the person's name in one of their posts and click the "send a personal message" button.. Or go to the inbox and click "compose".
4. Grab chip and char sets out of someone's game. Or look around this topic and find the one Daegon Kimeron made. If you randomly browse this forum, you will find some randomly good(:D)psets and charsets.

Hope I helped! Oh, and for meoth456... I;ve been to the site, but forgot the address. ^.^''

UmbreonsShadow> Yeah, everyone can use that. I'm posting the second part here as well.
Demonstrife>
1. If that doesn't work, try going to Start>Run>Type in directory for RPG Maker>Paste file into Chipset folder. Also, make sure the dimensions and color scheme is right. You can find that in the Rm2K3 help file.
2. To create a website without paying or without experience, I recommend signing up with www.tripod.com or www.freewebs.com. The sites are free, easy to create and maintain, and really good. I use Tripod personally. It has more features.
3. Go to your control pannel (http://www.pokecommunity.com/usercp.php?) and click the "Send New Private Message" tab. If you want to view your inbox, I think there's a button for that too.
4. If you download my game (http://darkmage310.tripod.com) I have some included. You may want to check out that Meowth dude also.

And one more time, Does anyone have Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire pokemon charasets?? I need walking sprites of them... Anyone who helps will be included in the credits. I dont need all of them.. just treecko and the other 2 starters.. and (of course) their evolutions. Any others would be much appriciated

DarkMage31

www.clickteam.com has a program called Install creator. It helps you make custom install processes. And to make the game run without RTP currently installed you must include all the game files, open the file RPG_RT.ini or something like that and add the following line of code:FullPackageFlag=1
And then insert the file Harmony.dll into your game folder. Done.

Also, if you have them, Zigzagoon, Poochyena and wurmple characters would be great but not in as great demand.

THANKS!

DarkMage> Thanks!! XD
I was hoping to make a pokemon game called Pokemon Faerie ^.^
You help a Celebi and it takes you to different times where you can catch the different pokemon. (Idea from Pokemon 4ever ^^)
Though, I'm still making my chipsets (Morning, Daytime, Evening) so I don't have anything made in the game yet ^^;

More titlescreens, eh? I'm pretty backed up right now with titlescreens but when (if) I have time later on, I'd be happy to help.

For custom installs, you may want to use an RTP Dependency scanner. One of these comes packaged in an awesome little Rm2k utility package. It was made by Anomy and Rast or something like that. If you can't find it I may be able to post a link.

Try the Pokemon Resources thread, or try the resources on www.gamingw.net. They have a whole Pokemon section! Get to it here: http://gamingw.net/resource/5/?l=62
www.gaminggroundzero.com also has lots of pokemon charsets.

Maybe you already discussed this but when will a decent version of the new RPG Maker come out cause I downloaded one but it kind of sucked.

DarkMage31
March 28th, 2004, 09:06 PM
They are supposedly coming out with an RPG Maker XP that features the optional addition of coding.

Anyway, if you want to download now and not wait years and years, you can get the 2000 version which is good, or the upgraded 2003 which is better. Some translations are better than others, so you probably ended up with just a crappy translation. If you want 2000, get the one by Don Miguel. For 2003 make sure it's translated by RPG Advocate.

Berserk
March 29th, 2004, 02:44 AM
If you get RPG Advocate's version, remember to get the font patch.
Or the updated RPG_RT.exe.

DarkMage31
March 29th, 2004, 04:19 PM
I downloaded the font patch before hand, so I didn't need to worry about that. I don't think it applies only to RPG Advo's though. I needed it for Miguel's 2000 translation as well...

Okay, I've taken care of #2(making a web page), #3 you guys he;ped me out there...#4 on the other hand, I dont quite understand... you see, I have downloaded your game, DarkMage but I don't know where you find the Start>Run>Type in directory for RPG Maker>Paste file to chipset folder thingy.
Also, every time I try to use any Pokemon Chipsets I find, nothing happens. I'm still stuck with DragonWarrior Chipsets and stuff. I've also gat more questions...
1)Can somebody explain that Start>Run>Type in directory for RPG Maker>Paste file to chipset thing, tell me where to find it?
2)How do I put my game on my website in case anybody wants to help me out, and so that when I get done, people can download it? Like you did DarkMage (though not exactly, just to where it is on there, and I can open it from there to work on it, download it, whatever people would want and need to do that I would allow, in other words, sensible stuff.
3)What do you mean dimensions and color scheme? I mean I understand dimensions (I think) but color scheme? What is color scheme?
4)Also I'd like to know, if I get this to where it can be worked on online, would anybody like to work on it with me? (Especially if you're skilled at RM2K or RM2K3) I would really appreciate the help, because when it comes to RM2K and RM2K3, well, lets just say I'm not exactly that great.

MartynL>That "perfect running tutorial" is what I used in my game, except I changed it to work with the shift key.

For ripping facesets, charsets, chipsets, etc, get a rom of Ruby, an emulator to play it on, and a screenshot program (www.freewarehome.com I think). Take screens and crop them. Remember to place a solid color in the background for the transparancy!

UmbreonsShadow> "The perfect running tutorial" @ www.gamingw.net should work. I used it in my game also. When you hold down the key you run, and when you release it you revert to normal walking. It's great!

Demonstrife> Here's another method for importing chipsets, but it takes longer if you have a lot.

When you find a chipset on the web you like, right click it
Select "Save Picture As..."
Save it anywhere you want (ex: My Documents)
Open RPG Maker 2000/2003
Open your game
Go to the drop down menue "Tools"
Select "Resource Manager"
In the left column, select the folder "chipset" (They're alphabetical)
Hit the button that says "Import"
Go to My Documents or where ever you saved it. Open it.
Click the transparent color (usually pink)
It's imported! Now go to the database, create a new chipset, and open the file!

When I say color scheme, I mean the color depth. There are several:
-32 Bit (True Color)
-16 bit
-8 bit
etc.
One of the above (16-bit I think) consists of a total variety of 256 colors, whereas 32 bit has a virtually limitless range. All rm2k files must be in 256 colors. To save something already 32-bit as 256, open it as a bitmap, go to file>save as, and from the drop down menue select 256 Color Bitmap. Click save, and it's now 256 colors. However, the results may not be good. To avoid this use a program (ex: Microsoft PictureIt) can avoid this. Here's the quote from the help file:
When dithering pictures in a True Color (16.7 million colors/24 bit) environment, the colors shown after dithering may differ depending on the system environment, graphics card, etc. Using software that can adjust palettes with 15-bit precision can mitigate this problem.

What time are we on? Depends on your timezone.

Oh, I hope this isn't too much to ask or anything. But, I am still setting up the coding in my game and all, and I'm setting up each pokemon in Variables instead of Heros because you can't have as many Heros as Variables. But, it's taking alot of coding and all and I'm wondering if I'm doing it the hard way or not.
Seperate Variables: FirstPokemonType: (pokemonNumber)
FirstPokemonHP: (HPnumber)
etc etc.

So, is there an easier way then that without using the Heros/Character thingies?

Krazy_Meerkat

I want to ask a question.
Should I add a system where you're allowed to change into different players?
For example, I've added May to the game. But if you want to use her pokenav,
or enter a Pokecontest, you have to change into her to compete.
Or is this just too frustrating?

And by the way, I've encoded the official battle system into my game.
(But it only uses up to the first 150 pokemon)

Another one will be when i was doing the CMS whenever I moved the pointer or arrow the hero move as well... what will i do to make it not move only the pointer? I'm sorry i have another one i hope its not too much...how can i make the hero walk faster?

Krazy_Meerkat

Ok I can help you with a few of those, the enter hero name thing is probly because you have the wrong RPG_RT.exe, you can download my game and just copy the RPG_RT.exe file because I don't know where else to get it from... Anyway that's only if you are using RM2K, if your using 2K3 then I have no idea what's wrong..
To make your hero walk faster, use the command "Move" Then when the box thingie opens up, select "Increse Hero Speed" or somehting, this will make him move faster.

Ok umm.. I'm not sure how this next part goes because I've never done it... I think when you pop up the menu, one of the first commands should be to "Stop all movement" well that's what it's called in my version.. You should be able to find it.. Maybe someone else should explain it.......

Krazy_Meerkat
April 8th, 2004, 06:39 PM
go into event editing mode, then right click somewhere and select "Set hero start position" or something. Do a tutorial on events, I think there is one a www.gamingw.net

DarkMage31
April 8th, 2004, 09:18 PM
Events are pretty much what you tell the game to do, or commands. There are several way to trigger events, for example, you can trigger it if you press spacebar on it, if you step on it, if you come into collision with it, etc. There are also three levels, below hero(pass over), same level as hero (can't pass), and above hero (passes under). There are other, more advanced ways to start them (Switches/Variables/etc), but you should practice with the basics first.

To give a command, double click the <> in the white box. A list of stuff will come up. These are commands. If you want to show a dialogue, you'd hit "Show Message" and then type it in. Yay! If you want a door, hit the second tab and select "Teleport." Choose where you want to teleport to when the event is triggered and hit okay. Yay!

Get it?

hey everyone, I've started work on a duplicate battle system to ruby/sapphire. I know a lot of people say it can't be done but I have already done part of it, and I have got a picture i my head of what else I am going to do. Just because somebody says u can't do it doesn't stop you from doing it. I did the reflection thing didn't i? I am about 13% complete of the battle system now and I wish there was a few more options in rm2k3. something that would be REALLY handy would be the ability to split up variables into their single letters and compile them again. also another thing which really gets on my nerves is in the message box options, you can't get it to show text and just leave it there until you tell it otherwise. There should at least be an option! is ther something I don't know about rm2k3? I thought 2k3 was meant to be a big improvement on 2k!!! they added a few more options and a different battle system WOW BIG EFFORT (scarcasm) well please tell me if I missed something new in 2k3 guys. i have to get back to work :(

DarkMage31
April 9th, 2004, 04:37 PM
Erm, it would be pretty difficult to break variables up into their single letters because variables are numbers.

And there is a way to deal with messages. Haven't you ever read the help file?

Brief pauses are \., then there's the code for long pause, \|, then you can tell it to close the message by iteself, \^, and bunches more. If you want to the message box to stay open, just go \|\|\|\| or something.

Krazy_Meerkat
April 9th, 2004, 06:56 PM
no what i wanted was the ability to have the message box stay there untill you tell it not to, like a picture. then you can continue with other events and leave the text there.

Not entirely true Darkmage, Variables can be letters, even whole words. I have used this before. You realize that to show which pokemon we will be fighting and their levels etc, we will have to do our own coding for letters and words. We will have to program every letter in there and make coding for sentences etc. are you prepared to make that effort? There has to be something easier. By the way dark, I have a bit more of the battle done now, we will have to chose our attacks in a downwards selection because rm2k3 doesn't support any other kind of choice option. Or if you want, I could do some more coding and use a selection thing.. But then how would we know what attacks go where if they are pictures? I suppose variables could do something there.. Well we have a few options, tell me what you want to do

DarkMage31
April 9th, 2004, 07:28 PM
Message boxes can be pictures. Just make the picture and use the command "message style" and set it to "transparent." If you get the image placement right, the text will appear over the picture. Then you can do what you like. It's just a little cumbersome (sp?)

No way, not EVERY SINGLE LETTER! You're crazy! Just set every pokemon in the database and use the \n[x] tab to reference them. Then you can have variables referencing their abilities and stats. Simple.

But herein lies the problem: to perfectly replicate it, we'll need to do everything in pictures. That means we'll have hundreds of pictures for every scenario- one for pidgy used tackle, one for pikachu used tackle, etc etc etc. That can be handled with Fork Conditions though.

For selecting, it'll all have to be picture-CMS style. Anything RM2K native would break the "Pokemon Style." I can do all that- I'm pretty experienced in that field.

For selecting the move, the variable determining where the pointer is located can lead into fork conditions asking which move is located in that spot for that pokemon (lots of forks!) For example:
_____________
|Move 1|Move 3|
|---------------|
|Move 2|Move 4|
---------------
<>Fork Var[Pointer]is Position 1
<>Fork Switch [pokemon is pikachu]
<>Fork Switch[moveslot 1 Thunder]On
Show battle animation
Run damage calculations w/ variables

Krazy_Meerkat
April 9th, 2004, 08:07 PM
ok that last switch u used is completely crazy, you would have to have so many switches, Can't we do this a different way like variable [001:thunder position] set =1
or something like that? but anyway to do that, we would've had to learn thunder... so it would be
<>Fork Var[Pointer]is Position 1
<>Fork Switch[Learnt Thunder]On
<>Fork Variable[Thunder Position] set=1
<>Changeswitch[Thunder attack] ON
Else:
<>Fork Switch[Learnt Bite]On
<>Fork Variable[Bite Position] set=1
<>Changeswitch[Bite attack] ON
etc ect
or we could have it <>ChangeVariable[attack] set=1 instead of changing all those switches on, and have a list which we reference to see which attack numbers are actual which attacks eg
<>Note: 1 = thunder
<>Note: 2 = bite
<>Note: 3 = scratch
<>Note: 4 = tail whip
etc etc and we could just put it in a push key event which we won't use except for that. I got it now, theres no stopping me.

I already have the text appearing over a picture thing, That was the first thing I did, what i wanted was to show the text: what will \n[1] do?
but you have to press the decision key to continue.. I don't want this to happen. I just want it to stay. That way I can use variables to represent the other pokemon's level and just keep it there.

And by the way, I AM crazy

April 10th, 2004, 08:56 AM
Hey Darkmage, I have a propersition (dunno how to spell that) 4 ya, I am going to code most of the battle system, but i want you to do your part as well since this is both our games, I want you to add all the pokemon to the battle system. (well all the ones we'll be using.. I will do the graphics but you have to add their attacks and position etc, you will understand when I send you the test version. Now remember this is OUR project ok? so please don't share the coding with anyone else.. I'm just saying this in case you may not know and might show people (not saying you would). I wouldn't like anyone else to see it until it is finished. And all people who help (majorly) with this battle system will get a fully working copy of it to use in their games.. Is that ok DarkMage? Tell me If you don't like any of what I have said.

In case anyone wants to know how they can help I need battle animations of actual pokemon attacks (fully working attacks of course) (I will just copy the battle animation into the game). I don't just want the graphic in case anyone is wondering, I want the animation.

I also want the Backs of all R/S pokemon, I have pretty much all but some did not download properly.

I would also like decent rm2k(3) programmers to help on this. When I say decent I mean a few years experience. I need people who are good with variables etc. Like somebody who could program a CMS or something. I don't want a tutorial, I want actual PEOPLE who have experience. I will ask you to code me something and If I like it and it is good enough to go in the game then I will trust you enough to send you a un-edited un-complete version of the battle system. You have to be TRUSTED to help in this project. DarkMage and I will not tolerate people who steal coding and are not worthy enough to work on a new ground-breaking RM2K3 project.

Also if you think you could help us in any way then tell us what you can do and we will talk it over and consider letting you help.

All decisions must be made with DarkMage and My consent, We are the project leaders and we will talk EVERYTHING over with each other before reaching a final decision. You must get BOTH our permission to do something on this game.

lol, getting a whole team together? Here's a new idea (unless of course you disagree Meekat): How about we have all the rm2k members of PC working on this? Everyone has their own skills, and if we ALL combine, it'll be great! Like Daegon Kimeron can make sprites/chipsets, I can work on the navigation of the CBS, Meerkat can do the actual programming of it, someone maybe Dizzy or somebody can do the ripping, etc. Good?

Sure, I'll add the pokemon to the CBS

Good idea for the CBS. Why didn't I think about that? Variables would be much easier than switches.

\n[x] shows your hero's name in a message box. \n[1] is hero 1, your playable character. With the Enter Hero Name, it's impossible to have forks for every single letter, so you just use the tag \n[1].

Krazy_Meerkat
April 10th, 2004, 06:49 PM
I agree with you DarkMage, but I doubt the whole PC team will work on this, although anyone is welcome to join.. By the way, I have already ripped most of the stuff but if anyone thinks they can help their welcome. Umm DarkMage... I edited your system graphics and replaced them with the real graphics is this ok?
Actually I think your right DarkMage.. But do you want to give the whole of PC our battle system? I wouldn't disagree but I would want our game finished first. It's up to you.

I agree with your enter hero name thing.. But you do realize that we would have to have our own screen to enter the hero name for this to happen? We could have strings of variables to control which letter goes where for which name.... like the variable 191509200112 could represent he word LATIOS do variables have that many numbers? I **** well hope so! Reading from the right, the first number is 12 right? That equates to the letter L. Then go a bit left and the number is 01 that equates to the letter A and so on etc. This way we could spell out entire words with variables! And have the ability to split them in into their single letters so we could show the actual letter with a picture. I will brb I'm just gonna see how many numbers a variable can contain in it...
Ok we got sort of a problem.. Only 7 digits are allowed.. Do you think we could split up the name? Like into two variables? I think that is entirely possible..

DarkMage, can I ask you to do something? Can you work on that for me while I do the battle system? Or anyone that is willing ot take it on? We need a map with an event which asks your name then displays a whole picture system (like the one in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire) to enter in the name. After that, I want it to enter the letters into 2 variables, Maybe 3 if we want more letters than LATIOS which we do.. And I don't mean enter letters into variables I mean enter NUMBERS which represent letters, eg 01=A 02=B 26=Z And I want lowercase as well if that is possible.
After that is done, I want an event that says: [So your name is] just a picture of that will be fine, but I want it to then display the name you entered into the variables (with pictures of course).
Don't worry about which variables you use, I will just "re-wire" them so they aren't the same variables I'm using on the battle system.
Anyone who could do this is greatly appriciated, they would get a spot in he credits AND get a copy of the battle system to use for themselves.

Agreed DarkMage?

Jeez louise, Meerkat. You're crazy. Variable strings for each letter? Lowercase and capital? How about we just do the regular Enter Hero Name. I mean it works perfectly, and we won't have to do any wacky picture things for every possible letter combination. All we would have to do is type \n[1]. Besides, the regular Enter Hero Name looks like the one in Pokemon anyways.

And what do you mean you edited my system graphic with the real graphics? Did you make a system file from a rip from ruby or something???

We should make a new thread for this. But in the meantime:
WE ARE LOOKING FOR HELP ON THIS GAME. All you have to do is state what aspect of the game you would like to work on. Here's what we've got so far:

I'll also upload some of the common events that I've done.
By the way Darkmage, you posted the same message twice.

Well the reason I wanted all that crazy variable string stuff was so that I could display the pokemon's levels and HP and PP and name. The normal enter hero name thing can't do this. I will do it myself if you don't think you can do it. I just need it done because I can't advance much further in the battle system without it. Thanks anyway.

Yes I replaced your system graphics with the real Pokemon Ruby graphics, I ripped and used them. That's how I have been able to do most of the battle system so far. I have the intro done as well (where you see the pokemon and thro your pokeball) I have done coding for the bit where it asks what you want to do, and so far you can get into the "Fight" option. How is that for a progress report?

Yes we do need a new thread for this so we don't go too far of topic.
I like your little tree diagram thing there! I could work on other aspects of the game as well, but first we must finish the battle system.

EDIT: lol we also still need a title for the game so we can start a new thread, DarkMage what do u think? Anyone else think they have a good name for a title?

I'm sorry, I didn't see your question.. You can make an event teleport but not to another map. I sugest you use a switch and make an autostart event that completes your thing after you teleport outside.
to make a screenshot, press print screen while in your game, then save it to paint or something. If you don't have te print screen button then too bad.

>RM2KJunkie, I agree with Krazy Meerkat.

But, just off the top of my head what I would probably do is when Oak takes you to the door you teleport and turn on a switch (Like OakFollow or something) and a different event of Oak could be there that only turns on by the switch(OakFollow) and your event that started the whole thing could MoveEvent the second Oak and so on. ^.^

Bleh, I hope all that made sense... Lol ^^;

There isn't much but there's loads of useful common events.

Hope this is of use for everyone.

Hey everyone! Darkmage, no need to worry about that enter hero name thing, I am doing it all by myself :) I have figured out a way to split variables and re-assemble them as letters (a lot of complicated mathswork there). funny tho cuz I never did extremely well at maths.. just average... lol just goes to show you :P as soon as I get this done, i will finish my work on the first (unofficial) pokemon battle. Then I will show you how to add all the pokemon in and their attacks and stuff, because then it will be your turn to work on the system.
*Phew*
Daegon, proud to have you on the team!!!

EDIT: By the way daegon, your pokemon game doesn't work. something about not being a valid zip archive..

Hey everyone, Darkmage I have FULLY COMPLETED the name system I thought up. :D Now there is a system, Numbers represent letters in alphabetical order. A=1 etc etc, I have made it so it asks you name and you enter it (NOT with the default enter hero name system, but with MY system)
I have the coding done to show the letters(tested and everything), but I have not shown them yet. I will later I need sleep now.. Please do not blame me for not being on at my normal times tomorrow (maybe today for you.. I don't know the timezone your in) anyway my girlfriend is comming over and I really do need a rest from all this intense programming wink wink :P anyway I am ready to continue full plow into the battle system. I will just need a day off, is that ok boss? lol..
Please post something anyway Dark, I have posted about 5 things without you even knowing they were there.

well, I will probably see you tomorrow (well today now, it is 1:25 in the morning) i will come on later today.. need to relax with my girl first though
byebye all

For the HP, PP, and name all you have to do is refference the database stats with variables. You don't need complex strings of variables. You're making too much work for yourself. But if you did it without me, all the better I guess... Anyway, rm2k3 kid is helping with map design. There's also another guy around here (I forgot his name) that I'd like to get working on the maps. I'll contact him later.

BTW, don't erase all the variable/switch/common event names. I'm going to want to see how you made the system and make changes myself.

was corrupted? Because it really shouldn't be.
Anyway, welcome to the team!
And Darkmage, I don't know if I would be good on charasets.

Sure you can work on the CMS with us.. Well by us, I mean DarkMage lol...
Yes I will leave all the information there, I even left little comments to help people understand what I was doing.. But can you tell me what you changed? Are you talking about the battle system or the neter hero name thing?
Ok, I have already done the enter hero name thing, The main reason I wanted it was so I could display the name of the pokemon you entered as a picture, I am going to make the bar with the HP and everything (including name) move up and down like in the game. I did that just for effect, but I want to display the name of the pokemon you're using for so many different reasons. If you ask me, It was worth it. We can use that enter hero name thing for ANYTHING now, I even used the real graphics from Ruby/Sapphire so it does actually look prety authentic.

I will just quickly explain the other part of it in case anyone needs to use it for a part of our game, It works by entering the letters you selected as variables. I made a coder which puts all those variables together into two different variables (which I am going to call cookies) the first half and the second half of the name. Then later I made a decoder which reads those two cookies and splits them back up into their 6 variables and displays them as letters. This way we can enter lots of names by coding them into cookies. (saves me like 5000 variables if we were to enter all 382 or whatever amount of ever-changing pokemon there are now) Also the letters are displayed at the co-ordinates Var[Picture X co-ordinate] and Var[Picture Y co-rdinate] or something so we can fully customize where the letters will be displayed. also when it moves onto the next letter I made it add 10 to the Var[Picture X co-ordinate] so that all we really need to do is change those variables to whatever we want and it will display the leters by itself. (As you can tell I was always a fan of the computer doing most of the work, All I have to use is my brain)

I can't really do any work for a while because I just woke up and my gf is comin round soon.. But I will get some done later, It is the holidayz so I can stay up all night working on this.
Daegon, If you don't want to do charasets that is fine, I have charaset experience.. And I spose I could do it if nobody else will.

Yukapuka, you can be a beta tester if you want. :)

Ok here is the new team:

Oh and DarkMage, If it's not worth doing the hard work then it's not worth playing. That is why i work so intensly on this, I hope a few people learn some new things while I'm at it. Remember, I will still be finishing up pretty soon and making you add all the pokemon ok? It's the least you can do after I have built the engine. :)

If this one is corrupted again, try unzipping this and the other file
with Alzip.

I'm sorry daegon it just keeps saying not a valid zip archive. It's probly just me. I would really like those f/r sprites!!! They would be good to add in the game. Anyway I have completed an attack in the battle system (animation and all) now I'm wondering what to do for the enemy turn.. I will soon complete this basic system, and I would please ask Dark to add in pokemon and attacks. It's not hard, I will do a little tutorial to show how to do this.
Daegon, could you please find a way to send me those F/R sprites? I would really like them for our game.. actually maybe you should send them to DarkMage.. I don't know.. Anyway thanks for being on the team
