I have a question, as the title suggests: Say I have armed Dragon lvl 5 in my hand, but no Armed Dragon Lvl 3 on the field. Can I Tribute Summon AD Lvl 5 by tributing another monster, say Soul Tiger, instead?

No. You must meet the requirements in order to special summon the level 5 armed dragon (in this case). You cannot tribute summon it.

Ah, peanuts! So, another example: Mystic Swordsman lvl 4 in my hand, no Msytic Sowrdsman Lvl 2 on the field. So I am guessing I cannot normal Summon Mystic Swordsman Lvl 4 straight up.

No, only the lowest level of the level summons can be summoned normally.

False. Level five Armed dragon and level four mystic swordsman both can be summoned normally. Only their higher level counterparts, like 7 and 8, can only be special summoned. You may still tribute for armed dragon in a normal summon, or normal summon mystic swordsman. In fact, on Mystic swordsman level 4, he has specific requirements for his normal summoning, in which he has to be face down for a turn first.

Kenny needs to brush up on his Yugioh. :P

Just for a follow up thing, if I take my opponent's Armed Dragon LV 5 via Brain Control or something like that, and it destroys something, I can Tribute it away by its own effect to try to summon Armed Dragon LV 7 (even if you don't have Armed Dragon LV 7 in your deck).

Actually, if you tribute it, since it goes to your opponent's graveyard, I believe that THEY would get to be able to summon the next level (in this case, Armed Dragon LV. 7), considering the rulings on other search monsters like Witch and Sangan...However, if no one HAS the LV. 7, no one can sacrifice the LV. 5 anyway.

But the opponent did not tribute the monster, you did, so it stands to reason that you get the rest of the effect.

Yeah, it has been about three months. I've been busy lately.

Don't know the policy on the actual game itself, but if it's going by what should happen, the controller of the effect should get it, regardless of where the card goes into the graveyard (since the card DOES NOT have a graveyard effect such as sangan and witch).

You should get the effect. It's like if you take control of you opponets MoF, and flip it face up, you get it's effect.
