View Full Version : MOTM- Stay or Go

Frostweaver

*believes that PC as a whole should decide if MOTM should stay or not*

EDIT: *realizes that he forgot to mention "yes" is for MOTM to stay, while "no" is for MOTM to go*
*thinks of a list of pros and cons for MOTM...*

Pros/ideas supporting MOTM (voting "yes" for the poll):
-a fun monthly event to look forward to
-will not hurt the feelings of members who got no votes, as all members will eventually get votes provided that they are patient and decides to take baby steps to work his/her way up the PC voting ladder
-just because there's no votes for you, doesn't mean that you're not accepted

Cons/ideas against MOTM (voting "no" for the poll):
-may hurt the feelings of members who got no votes... the voting categories are all an indirect way of saying "all but these guys suck"
-a popularity contest, which is detestable
-MOTM has lost its meanings... members no longer truly vote from pure honesty but just stuff in name of friends for every category possible

*thinks that everyone should pitch in their idea about MOTM*

*thinks that if MOTM is to go, then MOTM will end by the end of February... since February MOTM is the 2nd anniversary for MOTM, it sounds like a good time to end if we're ending it*

I don't really care. I rarely get any votes but it doesn't bother me because I already know hardly anyone pays me any attention (except for a few people like Kairi, Moonlight, and Vito)

Miyu-chan
January 23rd, 2004, 4:16 PM
Well, I think it should stay, cause...like me, when I first joined, I hardly got any votes from the MotM. But it was part of the MotM that made me work harder to the top. ;p And I vote for people who I think really deserves it, regardless of friendship or whatever.

Kairyu
January 23rd, 2004, 4:21 PM
I thought MOTM is a interesting and fun way to interact with other members, but like you said frostweaver it does hint at it being one of those popularity contests. On top of that most members would just add their friends name to the list categories rather than carefully choose different members based on merit.
So, I'm sad to say it should go, or at least reform.

EDIT: Your poll question is very... vague. Should I say "yes" it should stay? Or "yes" it should go? :P

Arcanine
January 23rd, 2004, 6:06 PM
I edited the poll.
Any way it dont matter to me, some members will feel hurt that thay didnt win something, I dont think I win best Mod any more but I dont care. MOTM is just for fun nothing more then that. Just like the pair-up thread is just for fun.

I never vote in the MOTM so it really douesn't effect me in anyway, and Blaine is the only one who votes for me and that dosen't bother me in the least either XD, I'm not really here to be a "popular" person but to post and mod.

DragonTrainer
January 23rd, 2004, 6:52 PM
Well, you know, the members that never get voted for, or feel unwanted, hardly even post at all.So, if they made even just a small effort to post a bit more, then people would know them, and evcentually become popular. So, with that said, I vote yes, it should stay

Yeah! My situation exactly DragonTrainer! MOTM is fun! Hehe.... It's one way to let others know that they're wanted here on PC without them making those "maybe I should leave" threads......

Iveechan
January 23rd, 2004, 8:05 PM
But that's the thing, the MOTM makes others NOT feel "wanted".

Arwen
January 23rd, 2004, 8:07 PM
Nah, if they don't know the member yet, so they can't feel unwanted.

Cosmos

I think it should go because almost the same people win and it seem to have turned into a popularity contest

Popularity, smochularity. I say MOTM stays, if people are gonna be crybabies because they did not get votes, then let em cry.

MOTM is pretty fun, and yes, its VERY VERY VERY annoying when people vote for the same person in every category.. Gee, vote for someone else, people!!!! >_<;;;

*gets killed by crybabies*

I think it should stay! People shouldn't take these things so seriously; it's only for fun. ^_^ As long as someone is active, then I guarantee that they'll be voted sometime. It may not be soon, but you have to be patient and work your way up.

Purin
January 23rd, 2004, 10:11 PM
I'm somewhere between no and neutral.
I do agree that it is fun, but not everyone here on PC regularly visit Other Chat, so those people that I know who are more based in other forums are unlikely to get voted (eg Sandra's Chargon who was The Dragon Protector [I think] or Pika2) or be able to vote.
If it is to stay it should be extented to appear on all forums just like those announcements.

Frostweaver
January 23rd, 2004, 10:17 PM
.......

*believes that to Purin MOTM can stay if it's made as a PCnational annoucement so everyone will know about it...*
*predicts that then there will be people who complains about why he/she can't isn't getting voted*
*forsees that we can drag those people about OC, a part of the forum they are probably unfamiliar with*
*guess that through this way PC will grow? ^_^; *

Junichi
January 23rd, 2004, 10:23 PM
Get rid of it. Its just some stupid popularity contest.

Hiroshi Sotomura
January 24th, 2004, 1:30 AM
Although I don't quite support Junichi's comment, I do think it's gone unnecessary. It's falling down. People are not using it properly.

I may not be finished with the current ones, but the voting has been abash. We NEED MORE ACTIVITY if it's to stay on. People voted for those not known about of proven to be suitable for a position. One, (kept nameless for reasons that must remain obscure) has voted a person in categories not even proven to be really supported in it. It's more of the most consisting friend vote if you ask me.

Frostweaver

.......

*believes that the only problem is honesty problem...*
*doesn't mind one person sweeping all the votes from one person, but should also vote for other people, or if that one person is really capable of sweeping every single category (for having best avatar, signature, more knowledgable at _____ and all)*
*wonders why Masato-kun is keeping "that member" nameless as I can even recall who that member is without looking back... it's too darn obvious who that is =/ *
*wants to suggest that MOTM needs a cap of say 5 votes max for the same member to stop this from happening?*

Phantom Angel
January 24th, 2004, 4:43 AM
It's just MOTM.
I don't know, just leave it as it as.

DragonTrainer
January 24th, 2004, 7:08 AM
Well, so what if it's a popularity contest? It's fun

If you're not popular, then you probably don't post much.PM people, make lots of friends, and then you'll gte voted for

Arcanine
January 24th, 2004, 8:15 AM
*Puts hand up* MOTM is only a popularity contest. If any one knew that. I mean would you vote for some one that never posted or never gets around? You would have to know that member by PMs or some other way. Now you mite vote "best new member" but most of the time that new member gets around and posts. So if you look at it all the MOTM is a popularity contest.

^^NICK^^ v.2.0
January 24th, 2004, 9:59 AM
I think it should. There are too many new members joining all the time, and then you don't know them, and it's hard to know everyone's qualities. So then you vote for the wrong person, or vote for the same couple of people in every category. It's unneccesary. We're supposed to be a family, not a popularity contest.

Hanatori
January 24th, 2004, 10:05 AM
I voted to get rid of it. As Junichi, Cosmos, Arcanine, Nick, etc said, it's just a popularity contest. It's kind of ridiculous to let popularity determine who's above the rest. oO

[joking mood] That's my reasoning... flame at will. [/joking mood]

(well, it is my reasoning. =P)

Arwen
January 24th, 2004, 10:22 AM
Nah.... just do the Member of the Month every 2 months... so theres a timeframe for the new members to know each other.

*believes that this voting should end on Jan. 31 (GMT -6) 12:00 AM...*

*but regardless of what he still wants to do February in celebration of MOTM 2nd anniversary/last MOTM*

Blaine

Heh ^^ You're my buddy, Lance! Anyways, I think it should stay, cos even if like only one person votes for you, it makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. So, Blaine says it should stay.

Frostweaver
January 24th, 2004, 1:41 PM
.....

*thinks that this is so intense with the extra percentage on both to stay and to go*
*thinks that perhaps we shouldn't let MOTM go or stay unless there's a majority of people voting for yes stay/no go, meaning 50% and above voting for that category... either re-vote and force the neutral people to take one side, or add changes to MOTM first and see if anything improves within that month then vote again*
*still think of MOTM as neutral*

Exactly! I remember when I was doing the posting statistics, and even though PC was made of few members at the time, the few members posted A LOT. It made people post! Somewhat hard work but it was very doable. Kind of freaky when I looked back at it though. With it, came the huge Member Get-Togethers too.
Heh ^^ You're my buddy, Lance! Anyways, I think it should stay, cos even if like only one person votes for you, it makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. So, Blaine says it should stay.
Yup, heh, I've had that feeling before. :P

But I voted neutral, because I really don't know what kind of long-term effect MOTM has. It most likely didn't affect on October, when it was brought back by me, just as Keitaro's theory pointed out (But I forgot what it is ^_^).

When I first saw MOTM, I viewed the thread as a decent chance to shout out my support for fellow PC members (I like doing that :P), but not being a n00b anymore, after a while, I kind of lost that somewhere. :( So MOTM was fun and it did carry happiness from time to time undoubtfully. ^_^

i think u should keep it even though it seems that it is a popularity contest i think that it adds to the fun of the forum. And as for it hurting anyone for not being voted for - i have never gotten any votes and i really don't mind, so if most people are like me then it is fine....if not then i have no clue what u should do.

So what if MOTM is just a popularity contest! I think it should stay, i find it interesting to see who's chosen who for whichever category, i'm also grateful to the people that have voted for me in one category or another and it doesn't bother me so much when i'm not voted for either. The main reason i actually posted in this thread was because i've completely had it with all the "Should we get rid of The Pair Up and Romance Thread!? etc" posts and whatever! One of the main reasons i joined PC was because of these Threads, they really help to show PC's individuality, i think but meh....that's just my opinion..

Hmm I'm not sure if it's the way that MoTM is handled is the actually problem, not the event itself. At another site I mod at MoTM has proven to be a sucessful way of improving members commitment to be a good member of the site. The voting is done differently. What happens is that members can nominate other members (but no staff) to be the MoTM (so there's only one catergory, also only one nomination). Those nominated are then voted for by the staff, on all round commitment, help, friendliness etc to the site. They even have a MoTM gallery at the site for those who have won it. due to the sucess!

I'm not saying we should adopt this or anything close to this method, but I'm suggesting that maybe the mechanism of the event is adjusted. I myself find the many catergories overwhelming. It really would be a shame to lose such a popular event, especially considering the planning taken to give those wishing to host the event the oppertunity ( I believe it runs into late next year with the next oppertunity).

It's always the people that feel they are inferior that say "MOTM's suck they should go" Whereas if they got a ton of votes they'd love the MOTM's...if I didn't get any vote for one month, I'd be pretty sad, but I wouldn't lash out and say that MOTM's are dumb...erk

Aww don't say that Dakota:P.
I'm not basing my vote on the fact that I don't get voted in MOTM, although I think I did get voted in some areas (go figure.) I just think it does more harm than good for the community where it stands. I don't want to say just get rid of it, I mean look at the votes so far. It actually neck to neck. If anything, the community and or staff should find a way to streamline this contest.

Anyway, let the votes keep rolling in...

HAHA, you're sooo right. That's why I don't like MOTM anymore, I don't get any votes. The only way you know how it feels, is to experience not getting any votes. When that happens you start to think MOTM is pointless.

Back in the spring of '03 [my prime], i loved MOTM, and I would never want to vote it out. My opinions have changed now, and it hurts people's feelings when they get no votes. And plus, it's usually the same people getting voted for in the same category every month.

I think Member of the Month should go. Why? Because it makes people jealous and pitiful. Your not getting anything out of it anyways like money or your education. And the Burden of counting the votes when you don't really get anything out of it unless you have so extra time. Sure Member of the month can stay, but if people are going to be jealous (using it as an Example) then Away it should go...

Go Keitaro! :)

*shall anaylze this post bit by bit*

Your not getting anything out of it anyways like money or your education.

*don't think anyone gets anything out of that either... wants to know if he'll ever need to know how to calculate the matrix in a graph if he wants to buy stuff from supermarket, or calculate the velocity of objects when he's driving*
*wants to know if money can buy true friends, true happiness, true blessings*

And the Burden of counting the votes when you don't really get anything out of it unless you have so extra time

*thought that all MOTM hosts VOLUNTEERED*
*thinks that not everything needs a reward*
*thinks that best reward doesn't need to be physical or obvious, but the satisfactied feeling of accomplishment, or seeing others happy about it even if they didn't acknowledge you*
*famous, well known for what you did < happiness you gave to others from doing it*

Because it makes people jealous and pitiful.

*wonders who's the pitiful one to cry over popularity and informal, not to mention non-consequential contests... it's not like winner will be promoted mod or anything*
*wonders what's there to be jealous about... some of these members actually worked hard and dedicated themselves towards PC in order to achieve their stands on MOTM*
*thinks that there must be a reason for how "lame" it is certain members always get voted for the same categories... perhaps they did something or acted a certain way that impressed others? Continues to wonder...*

*has a sudden urge to change his votes from neutral to "keep MOTM!" But can't change because he voted too early... sigh*

One idea would be you can only vote for the same person twice or thrice in your entire ballot, that could force actually going to certain sections to decide who you find admirable about the category youre voting for. Im surprised no one mentioned this idea. It might be effective at preventing people like me from creating an illusion that winning some categories is impossible.

Anyone who knows me well knows I seldom say my opinion unless its necessary. Really, Ive never been in the down-shadow except for the first two months, so I doubt anyone wants the top-voted person of the MotMs opinion on this anyways.

I think maybe should only have it every three months. 'Cause every month it's the same thing [same winners and same categories **UGH**] and it's really mundane.
Yeah, I've thought about that idea. Even though most people will complain about having to wait even longer for their turn to host the MOTM event, I still would rather maybe do it every other month. Have MOTM one month, skip a month, etc. Just so it's not always stickied up there, and will give people a break sometimes. =\ I dunno.

And by the way, when are the December results going to be posted? O_o I haven't seen them yet!

What's wrong with MOMs? They bring us to life!!!
No not moms, MOTM. MOTM is Member of the Month.

*believes that Dizzy was suppose to do it but he's too busy*
*... speaking of Cookie, he has a cookie jar beside the computer right now ^_^; Can always give one to Kayleigh as well*

Arwen

Well, let me uhh host the next one... I might change it so it would be fair then.

...

*thinks that it's up to Dragontrainer to decide as he's the one who asked to do the next one 3 months ago*
*perhaps Alyssa/others can suggest to him through PM about possible changes, but he will be the one to host unless he's absent that is*

Lol, okay. I wouldn't mind doing it. ^_^; But it may have to be tommorow while everyone's gone so I'll get lots of computer time. =D Umm.. I hope I can count the votes right. I've never done this before. x_x;

Kayleigh

Oh, wait... It wasn't November. o_o; Miyu hosted November MOTM, lol. So I need to count the December results?

Kairi
January 30th, 2004, 12:41 PM
Thats right; the December results were never counted. ^_^;

Arwen
January 30th, 2004, 12:43 PM

Frostweaver
January 30th, 2004, 12:49 PM
...

*currently no one volunteered to count them, and PC is still just fine ^_^; *
*proves that MOTM is only for entertainment that every member can live with even if we don't get to see the results... no one really minds about how much vote s/he got in it*

Kayleigh
January 30th, 2004, 12:54 PM
I've got them counted now, well sort of. ^_^; They're all listed in categories, I'm just counting how many votes each member got all together. (If I'm making sense?) Also, I wasn't sure if it would offend Dakota if I went ahead and posted them when I was finished. =\ He might want me to PM the list to him for him to post, since he was the one hosting it, after all.

I guess you're right but that's really weird... for a MOTM to not be counted untill the end of the next Month. =/ =D I think I have an idea who won in Nov/Dec/Jan anyway though.

If you mean to vote for this thread, just scroll all the way up. If you mean to vote in the MOTM, it's in General Chat. Janurary MOTM? Erk! It's February now... so uh... anyway...

I believe it should stay... it really makes the members here at PC feel more special in my opinion. ^_^

I've noticed peoiple who don't want MOTM either don't vote, or are inactive....strange

Greed
January 31st, 2004, 11:29 AM
That's cus most inactive people just want everything their way. They think just cus they are newbies people will worship them so they can stay..

Things don't go that way, darn it, newbies..

Besides, MOTM is cool and makes ACTIVE people feel better.

If inactive people say MOTM should go, its mostly because they don't get votes cus they are not active and people don't know em. If inactive dweebs want votes, they should stay, be good, and votes will come...... Sometimes ^^; If I sound critical, I'm sorry, but people who are crybabies just tick me off..

A forum needs active members to survive but it also needs new members coming in... :\

Greed
February 5th, 2004, 7:41 PM
I know, but new members need to be more active and less time whinin'.

*drowns*

I dont see why MOTM should go..

22sa
February 5th, 2004, 7:56 PM
I think most of us are well use to it. They just made this thread because of some, or, a lot of negative thoughts about the MOTM have been produced over time. =P

Frostweaver
February 5th, 2004, 8:10 PM
*a lot of people are angry at motm... it's very very unfair for most members in PC that their 5 post over 12 days didn't earn them anything*

*like before... post often especially in OC and MVP will ALWAYS help... being nice will help too. That's how young (PC-age wise) Optic pretty much got best new member in the bag*

22sa
February 5th, 2004, 8:24 PM
Heh, for how to get votes you gotta ask the people who get the most votes I guess. =P Eg. Kairi

Haruka
February 5th, 2004, 8:29 PM
It should stay... the more MOTM stays, more PC popularity.

22sa
February 5th, 2004, 8:36 PM
But the exact opposite resulted in October...

Haruka
February 5th, 2004, 8:46 PM

Frostweaver
February 6th, 2004, 3:04 PM
*back then Dakota sweeps best fanfic for sure (it's set in stone like how Arcanine and Kairi usually share best s-mod and so on)... but new PC is almost all new members who are voting compare to Feb or March...*

<= is frustrated...

DragonTrainer
February 6th, 2004, 3:07 PM
Why are you frustrated frostman?Lol, I'm curious

Kairi
February 6th, 2004, 3:36 PM
I think I might know why, doesnt have to do with MotM though. ^_^;

Dakota never mentions how he got so many awards before, hes so humble. ;p

DragonTrainer
February 6th, 2004, 6:19 PM

Haruka

Kairi
February 6th, 2004, 8:48 PM
Yeah, but I guess the majority wants to stay. And I posted that plug in the wrong topic, whoops. ^_^; I had like 40 IM windows open. X_x;

Yeah, but I guess the majority wants to stay. And I posted that plug in the wrong topic, whoops. ^_^; I had like 40 IM windows open. X_x;
40??? O_O;;;
The most I have is 3 at one go, I can't take too many, so that I can pay equal attention to everyone =P
Since the majority wants it to stay I will go with the decision u_u

Frostweaver
February 7th, 2004, 5:46 PM
*guess it is quite obvious looking at the poll what the majority of PC wants... neglecting the "neutral" votes, then MOTM will stay with 61% of PC members supporting MOTM to stay. That is over 50% of PC members who wants MOTM to stay, and hence... it will.

MOTM is decided. It will stay in PC. If you're not pleased with MOTM still, you do not have to participate but it will live on for the joy of everyone else. And this is the conclusion of this poll. ^_^*

*this is no longer needed... close?*

All right, This was a good discussion. ^_^
