ExtraOrdinary
July 17th, 2005, 06:49 PM
How are you all, dudes?

Here comes my second topic about POKéPC! It's a continuation of the topic I posted last year, but this one is more advanced and complicated!

1-What is POKéPC?
http://members.lycos.co.uk/pokepc/img/box.png
POKéPC is a POKéMON RPG engine made in a pure programming language, and a self-dependant programmed toolkit. Programming language used in POKéPC is Visual Basic. This is a DirectX enhanced engine.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT MADE USING RM2K OR ANY OTHER TOOLS!

2-What is current version of POKéPC?
It's version 1.5.0.0 and newer versions will be added later.

3-What are the new features in POKéPC?
->Added a custom fontset.
->Script-driven actions are now supported.
->Started in programming wild POKéMON battling system.
->In-game animations (non behaviours of tiles) are supported.
->Forelayer of tiles overlapping the sprites.
->Map border like trees or running waves is supported.

4-Screenshots from the engine :
http://pokepc.normmatt.com/images/pokepc15.png http://pokepc.normmatt.com/images/pokepc13.png
http://pokepc.normmatt.com/images/pokepc08.png http://pokepc.normmatt.com/images/pokepc16.png

What should I post in my reply?
->Your windows type (XP/ME).
->FPS you see while running the engine (i.e. the number you see up in the screen while you are running the engine).
->Your rating for the engine (0 to 10)
->Your personal opinion and suggestions for the engine (feel free! :classic: )
->If an error occured, DON'T POST IT! Instead PM me.

5-Where can I download the engine?
You can download current version from HERE (http://pokepc.normmatt.com/downloads/pokepc_1.5.zip) or HERE (http://members.lycos.co.uk/pokepc/pokepc/pokepc_1.5.zip).

Major Update (1.5.0.0):
1- Supported map connections finally!
2- Different walking modes like running mode.
3- Supported map wraps and gamma fading methods.
4- Fixed speed issues.
5- Wild POKéMON battle finally!
6- Main menu is now available.
7- Tile animation speed issue fixed.
8- New bonus map (LEGEND ISLANDS).

Waiting for your replies................... :rambo: :rambo:

I suggest you use a better host because Lycos is poor and unreliable. Sounds like you've made great progress though, I'd love to test it out.

Hmm... the demo ran smooth, although I couldn't move anywhere else besides the town. :D

Just some things...
1. The controls (with arrows) are a bit weird. If you are, say, moving up, and you hold the right key with moving up, then letting go of the up key, you can't move right. Instead, you'll have to press and hold one key at a time...
2. When you use the action key, the words just pop up, instead of doing the letter by letter effect.
3. You can stand on doors.

Otherwise, very neat. 7/10 :)

Please it's only version 0.4!!
These missing things you are talking about are still in make!
Remember that I offer extra programming not using RPG Makers!! :D
Maybe I was bit busy in programming the new tools for programming sphere, and adding new features to the map editor scripts! :classic:

I would like to post the steps, but I can't figure out how to download it. Your direct-link doesn't work because Lycos doesn't support direct-linking.

True, the site isn't in Chinese. It's in Arabic. I can still get a general idea where to go, by looking at the link targets, but that's it. In the programs section, it isn't listed. I'm at a loss.

Okay, as requested by you:

->Your windows type (XP/ME). XP
->FPS you see while running the engine (i.e. the number you see up in the screen while you are running the engine). 64 FPS
->Your rating for the engine (0 to 10) I think it's too early in development to give a fair rating.
->Your personal opinion and suggestions for the engine: There didn't seem to be much there, just talking to a few NPC's. I was expecting to see some kind of early battle system since you listed it as one of the things you'd been working on.

->Your personal opinion and suggestions for the engine: It was just 2 maps of talking to NPCS there werea few buildings that you couldn't go in. You should work on it more before you release another version

I think it's great that your doing this. Vb, while considered an easy language to learn, is ALOT harder to work with than the rpg maker series. Anyone who criticizes ExtraOrdinary's work needs to ask themselves "Could I do this ?" The majority of you will answer "NO I can't, I'm too useless and lazy to learn how to." Constructive criticizm, Im sure is appreciated but not blunt remarks like:

I really didn't like the movement system at all... its horrible
Anyways on a lighter note, ExtraOrdinary keep up the good work, I'll be following closely, this looks like a project thats actually going to be finished :classic: Good luck !

To be fair to Raccoon, ExtraOrdinary did ask for "personal opinions" of the engine. That's exactly what he gave, he didn't like a part of it so he said it.

Well, true, the movement does need to be fixed. Jeff explained the problem earlier in the thread so I wont just repeat what he said.

Totally true, I asked for personal opinion in the CURRENT VERSION but after you reply by the steps I put in the head of the topic!

ExtraOrdinary

Concerning editing maps and other stuff, I haven't made a decision yet!
I should first finish the basic functions in my engine, then I will decide what data can be edited and other data which are constant.

Any way, I won't make any release for the public before version 1.0 (Official first release)!!

Ditto, honestly I think people would like to see progress on the engine, you really haven't released that many features about your engine and your demo only consist of an example of a game but it dosen't allow you by any means to develop a game. If you do finish this engine, you could consider using the game as an example though to give a clearer idea on how the engine works. Well...good luck! :)

Ok, I have XP and I downloaded the latest version, the 0.7. The FPS was between 40 and 44. I played for a bit and I noticed some things:
- You don't have a menu,
- The movement was a bit slow even while running,
- You can't enter Birch's lab,
- Wild Pokémon didn't appear on the first route.

1- FPS 40<->44: FPS methods got better in winXP I see.
2- Menu: Added finally in version 0.9 (v0.9 not released yet).
3-Slow movement: Map buffering functions was fixed in v0.9.
4-BIRCH's lab: not a problem, as this is only an engine not a complete game, eh?
5-Wild POKéMON: Surprise ;) .

1-Purple background is just temporary and gonna be replaced soon. ;)
2-Booda's Call of Latios is the best game out there at the moment, I hope I can design a single adventure like he made.
3-Resolution here is 320x240, I see that this resolution is very optimum for all POKéMON games on PC.
4-There is also a fullscreen mode that will work if you don't have the buggy Windows XP Service Pack 2. :D
5-Windows ME is my favourite gaming OS. If you think that Windows XP is better than it in game speed, try yourself running a game on XP and ME and you will notice the gap in gfx performance. :\

(VI)Troubleshoot FAQ:

1- The program gives me a run-time error "Object doesn't support this action". Why?
A: This has probably occured because of running the fullscreen mode of the program under Windows
XP with Service Pack 2 installed. You should run the windowed mode instead as SP2 doesn't
support resolutions less than 800x600 pixels.

2- The game hanged in the middle of wild battle scene. What to do?
A: Right click on your Desktop -> Choose Properities -> "Settings" tab -> "Advanced" button ->
"Monitor" tab -> Set refresh rate to 70 Hz at least or higher if you have good VGA card.

3- The game is running slow on my PC. What to do?
A: You should set your VGA card refresh rate to its optimal value or at least 70 Hz following
the steps mentioned in the previous answer.

Well I said it wouldn't work because I thought I was missing some files but I found out why so nevermind that. Looks good. Still in great development though.

Edit: Nevermind about the map transition. It was something else, lol. So what do you use to code this? I mean, notepad won't open it.

Very Nice! There was a little problem with Zapdos and Articuno where if you press Z they cry but you wont ingage in battle until you press Z again. Other than that its great especially the cbs.

Where's the credit for my hero sprite? I specifically noted that you MUST give me credit when using in the readme file on my website.

I'd like to point out that he has every right to be annoyed. Technically you have stolen his work without asking. Basically its like you follow a guy around all day with a camera without letting him know, and then make a movie about it, which is ilegal because you didn't have their consent.

So technically he should be angry at you for stealing his work.

Not much to be proud of if you leave out the credit and people think you made it. That kinda defeats the purpose of my work.

Well, I asked you before to make some sprites and be member of the team, but you refused :(
That was probaly around the time I was extremely busy with my personal life. Hence why I refused.

I run XP, I get around 64 fps which is really smooth.

Rating: 9.
It's in an early version and I know everything will work perfect when you complete this engine. Otherwise in its current state for what it is supposed to be, I'd give it a 6. But I know it will be far better as this used to be last year terrible. Come a long way.

If I could figure out how to edit ppm files, that'd be great. Or like if you could explain how people use this to make their own full games.

Take a look at the resource thread, you should find what you need there.

That was your reply to a private message of mine, then I began to follow the resources. Well, I've only used one sprite of your work. I'll then replace it with another one if u still complain about the credits. :\

Making profit out of franchise you do not own the right to is illegal. No matter what you're making.

sphereslayer
September 14th, 2005, 10:35 PM
It wouldn't be illegal if you removed all nintendo graphics and trademarks. You could sell it and leave it up to the end user to find their own tile sets. In saying that I think you'd find one person MIGHT buy it then just post it for free on a site. I don't think anyone cares about your toolkit if your going to make them pay for it.

Alistair
September 14th, 2005, 10:41 PM
Actuallu, it still would be if he didn't remove the name PokéPC.

DarknessMonkey
September 14th, 2005, 10:56 PM
This is highly ILLEGAL becuase you are selling a name that is already registered (Ex. Pokémon). I really don't think you can say you made all those tilesets & characters.

mattgcn
September 15th, 2005, 12:18 AM
About all that copyright ****...See the other thread by ????? for that disclaimer.

No, wait, its my clipboard:

"The activities of this site fall under "fair use" as defined in 17 U.S.C. § 107, as they are transformative and noncommercial, do not copy a significant portion of the copyrighted work and have no detrimental effect on the marketability of the copyrighted work."

All of it is true to the Pokemon Online engine. It is all non-commercial, no profit is made, and though this slows need for development, it keeps us safe. The only money we get are sponsoring gifts to keep the site and server up, mainly righ now through google ads, which are perfectly legal. Part 2, though we use lots of Nintendo materials, most of it is our custom, except in names of anything and sprites of old Pokemon. We created new Pokemon, new regions and completely rehauled Johto to a new level. New items and types and such overshadow the old as the game's majority and most of the tiles and art we use are custom built by our own staff. Part 3, this will do nothing to deter the sales of Pokemon games. At all. We'll still buy every new game that comes out, as will anyone else, since it's always good to keep up on the best Nintendo projects. If anything we're advertising, and we're trying to put out a temporary solution for the fans before Nintendo stops being stubborn and does it themselves.

Also, if you're thinking "PO's run out of Canada, US Constituion doesn't apply!", well we can avert that, we're even more lenient up here! If not, we can simply say its "run" out of the country with the best law on it since we're so multicultural. US, Canada, Holland, Australia, NZ or the UK..

The only thing illegal we've done is use ROMs, but if you come searching, you'll find our computers quite devoid of them, and without evidence, no trial can be set up against us."

Fweheheh, so as long as PokePC is majoritarily their own, certain things, like chipsets and coding, ranking above names for importance, and not sold for cash, you all =safe

ExtraOrdinary

Silver Pearl, you could be a little more original than a couple of swear words.

Also, If anyone wants to know, I have AOL Dialup. There is no known way that I can switch on and off accounts in minutes.

Silver pearl, just to ask: how old is your cousin? I am lead to believe that she is 3 years old. Kinda like you, except actually that age. She's not acting like you are..A she? WTF? HE is 14. How about you?

What I can't understand is that you give extraordinary no credit for what hes' achieved. This whole thing is made from scratch, programed! 9/10 people on her can't understand rgss for f**k sake! You give it a go! Most people hear Vb n think "pft what a noob use a real language like C++" It's not as easy as you may think! Programe something worthwhile yourself, I bet after the months of time put in to it you'll be asking for some form of gratification before you give it to someone aswell! To be honest with you I'm not happy to hear it won't be free when it's finished but it's fair enough, I fully understand they want money for it. Keep up the good work EO, you've got my support

Listen!! I understand you are all angry at each other, but we can't have a flame war in this or any post!! Stop swearing at each other and be a little more mature. If ExtraOrdinary's team wants to sell it, then you can't flame him for doing so!! Stop flaming and being n00bs!! Please, the last thing we need is this wonderful program might never be released.

Actually, I am turning 15 this December Silver Pearl. And all of you people supporting ExtraOrdinary, read all of his posts. When I posted my topic, it was for his protection and the protection of the community. But no. Then ExtraOrdinary comes to my thread and completely destroys it with his flaming and immature behavior with his Teletubby friend Silver Pearl.

Lol thats rich a 14 year old telling me off. No offense... just keep in mind in if this was the real world you'd be on the ground crying now :) But it's not in the real world coz the sad thing is everyone on this forum (including me) are delusional little freaks who like pokemon. Time to grow up, I'm over it now, sure I'll play a game if a decent one gets released but untill then **** pokemon. I feel so much better :p

Who would be crying on the ground? You? Oh, I am terribly sorry. I was just correcting the sentence to make it a true statement.

I wasn't referring to you, idiot. Lol you honestly think I'd sink as low to argue with a little kid on a pokemon forum? GET A LIFE :dead:

Can everyone stop flaming and arguing here?If this continues, banning could be issued by the higher staff. Plus, E.O. would stop making this, which i'm looking forward to. The toolkit is what E.O. and his team is using to make the program, so the program is free. The toolkit isn't. Correct me if i'm wrong.

1-Thanx our moderators for stopping this disastre.
2- The toolkit arguement: My last word says that the toolkit is free of course but my team doesn't agree to offer it now.
3- Member like me shouldn't be banned so easily as others may think :chinese:

Thank you all anyway, and expect new and new from my hardworking team ;)

I didn't say you should be banned =D Sounds good. Can't wait to see the toolkit. I agree that it should wait anyway to be released as it's current form is probably in bad shape, since you havn't worked on it that long. Good luck to you.

Iwas thinking when u told me you're gonna sell pokepc+game......but, you must need nintendo's permission to use pokemon's trademark....and I really don't believe they give it to you :classic: so my point is....you CANT sell it

Naito

He is not going to sell it NeoBlade. He is going to make it free when the program is finished. His team doesn't want to offer it for free right now.

Yay! ExtraOrdinary is finally going to distribute the toolkit for free! ExtraOrdinary, you are back on my "good list." I can't wait to see what will be of it when you release it. Oh, and sorry for the entire argument. Just to let you know, it was for your protection that I started that topic. I was't intending for it to get that out of hand.
